Sierra Nevada Beer Camp 029: Ghidorah

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp 029: Ghidorah

DO NOT rate the 2014 Beer Camp Double IPA under this listing. If you have the 24 oz. silk screened bottle, that beer should be rated under Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Across America West Coast Double IPA.

Originally Beer Camp #29 from 06/2010. Brewed by Chris and Joe DeCicco, in conjunction with Sierra Nevada’s Beer Camp, an American Double IPA that is as formidable as its Sci-Fi monster namesake. Ghidorah is golden-amber in color, with a pronounced hop-forward presence. Grassy, resinous, and citrus peel dominate the aroma. It has significant malt body, which adds balance to the beer, but the malt quickly subsides toward a firm bitter finish.

3.6 12 ounce bottle from the Best of Beer Camp assortment ($17.99 for the 12-pack). Pours a cloudy honey-amber hue with two fingers of frothy off-white foam. Aroma is predominately sharp hops with notes of fruit (citrus and peach), soap, and pine-scented cleaner. Flavor of bitter hops with elements of grapefruit rind, tropical fruit (pineapple), and pine needles. A bit of caramel maltiness makes itself known near the end, but this is certainly hop-centric. Long bitter finish and unfortunately there is some alcohol burn as well. Decent DIPA from Sierra Nevada, but it falls quite a bit short of their Hoptimum. (352, 684)
4.0 Draft at Green Lion Inn, BSF Meeting. Malmö, October 2011. Aromas of soft american hops, lemon, grapefruit and grass. Quite dry in the aroma with some nice dry hops as well. Refreshing taste with a big richness. Loads of hops! Good!
3.2 Cloudy orange pour.... That could have been due to not keeping it from the unfiltered components form settling. The head is small and white. The aroma is sharp hoppy pine. the flavor is sharp and harsh pine hop. the finish is not was sloppier then I would have liked. A good beer, but not a session beer.
3.7 Hoppy smell, with citrus the obvious primary sniff. A good combination of grapefruit and pine with some lemon battling to make some noise. Citrus hops dominate the initial taste, with grapefruit and pine battling for supremacy. Fairly bitter aftertaste. The bitter taste kept coming back, but it was pleasantly bitter. Medium body with moderate carbonation.
3.7 Bottle: Poured a deep beige color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some good lacing. Aroma consists of clean citrus and pine hoppy notes. Taste is also a good mix between some pine and citrus notes with a solid non-descript malt backbone. Body is quite full with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. This beer was brewed very close to style with a good aroma and solid malt backbone. Not standing out from other DIPA but well enjoyable nonetheless.
4.1 A: pale in color, foamy 1/2" off white head. Reduces to lacing that clings all over the glass. S: strong caramel and citrus hop T: punch of citrus and pine molded well with plenty of sweet caramel and malt. Just what a dipa should be M: medium bodied, slightly dry mouthfeel
3.7 First off this is a good looking beer. It’s pretty much a clear light copper color. You can see a ton of bubbles shooting up from the bottom of the glass. Nice bright white two finger head is poured. Lacing throughout and decent retention. The aroma on this beer isn’t huge at all. Instead it’s a nice and clean malty aroma mixed in with citrus and some presence of other tropical fruits. Not mind blowing but decent. I was definitely more excited about the taste. The hops take a bit more of a front seat here. Citrus and grapefruit. Some piney hops. Nice bite to the hops. Good malty backbone presence. It’s hard to explain but it’s a nice clean and fresh IPA. Mouthfeel is slick, well carbonated, and medium bodied.
3.6 Thin but lasting white lace. Golden color. Intensly hop grape aroma. The taste is also intensly hoppy with a big bitterness. Very dry finnish.
3.7 12oz bottle from spinrsx. Hazy orange with an off creamy white head. Light citrus and pine, soapy, orange, bit sweet with an underlying malt. Smooth, moderately high carbonation, medium body, little prickly (alcohol), little bit of sweetness but quickly hidden by a balanced bitterness that does not overwhelm. Becomes very dry with a nice "soapy" layer on the palate, lots of pine and orange/grapefruit that lasts for quite a while.
3.6 2011 bottle, labeled Beer Camp #29. Pours hazy orange/amber with dead Sea Monkey-like suspended debris, with a 2-finger fluffy off-white head that leaves rings of lacing as it recedes. Aromas of tart citrus rind, spicy citrus, dough, and some funky fruit. The flavor is bitter citrus rind (grapefruit, orange), some funky citrus juice, sweet orange in the finish, and sugared fruit and earthy malt. Medium carbonation and medium/full body, with a dry finish. A nice citrus-forward IPA. [925]
3.9 12oz bottle - Part of the Beer Camp 12-pack. Tons of citrussy hops. Reminds me of citrus rind and the bitterness associated with that. The sweetness keeps things restrained and what should be a showcase of hops, winds up playing nicely.
3.6 Bottle, mix pack, ty Kelly!! Orange pour, big white head. Nice fruity citrus aroma. Taste is solid - big hops as expected, mostly citrus. Body is a bit thin and there is not much in the finish. But it is a very drinkable double IPA. Nice job - nothing cracy, just good,, and that is fine with me.
3.7 Name: BC Double IPA (29) Date: June 09, 2011 Mode: Bottle Source: Sherlocks, GA Appearance: hazy copper, frothy white head, sticky lace Aroma: sweet crystal malt aroma, lots of citrus hops, sweet sticky pine Flavor: big sweet crystal flavor, lots of hops, sweet pine, tongue scraping bitterness, hot peppery spicyness Aroma: 7/10; Appearance: 8/10; Flavor: 7/10; Palate: 6/10; Overall: 16/20 Rating: 3.7/5.0 Drinkability: 7/10 Score: *** /4
3.3 Sampled in a 6 pack. The hops were a little rough on this one. The alcohol is strong on this one as well. Overall, I had higher expectations for this one but it is still decent.
3.6 crisp gold/amber with a white head. nose is super fresh hops. light resin, and fruits. chewy palate, big malts up front, followed by pine and resin. bitter finish.
3.9 Pours a cloundy orange with small head. Aroma of grapefruit, orange, pine, lemon and hops. Taste follows the nose with some sweetness. The balance of hops and sweetness is very good. A nice semi sweet hops bitterness that lingers a light year in the finish. A very solid DIPA.
3.2 Pours a clear gold colour with an aroma similar to the hop wallop by victory. It does have a grassy resin flavour to it with a hint of something else i cant pin down. I guess its typical of the stuff coming out of the US today although im not a big fan.
3.3 Draft @ SBWF2011. Pours an amber color with an off-white head. Has a fruity malty earthy hoppy grapefruit aroma. Fruity malty hoppy bitter earthy flavor with hints of grapefruit. Has a fruity malty hoppy bitter finish.
3.9 Fine herbal DIPA! Bitter after-taste lasted as long as any beer that I have tried. Clear gold color, medium body and head.
3.8 Appearance: orange with honey hues. Pithy head is fluffy, clumpy, and patchy. Rests with a gentle haze. Swirls blotchy with sticky lace and a patchy blanket. Nose: grapefruit, lovely grapefruit – white mostly with some yellow. zest, skin, and lemon. Grapefruit pulp and juice – freshly squeezed. Pine and spearmint in the back. Key lime is a subtle suggestion. Seviche finish of fresh citrus juices amidst sea breeze essence. Palate: grapefruit, key lime, and lemon hits hard and fast, leading into pine needles and hop resins. Pith and rind – take above fruits and rind away. Deliciously simple. Final Thoughts: not overly complex but the flavors were bright, rambunctious, and eager to please.
4.0 Lightly carbonated, rusty cloudy golden appearance, smells of citrus and grass,. Full of flavor with hints of citrus especially grapefruit, nice amount of bitterness of course, but not astringent. Long finish after the swallow. If you weren’t bitter before you will be after this brew, but in a a very nice way. Party on I mean drink on Garth.
4.0 Good double IPA. Has a sweet hoppy taste, with hints of citrus, grass and grapefruit. A nice bitter finish for a crisp and refreshing brew that is very drinkable and enjoyable.
4.0 In short: A citrusy, grassy and citric bitter hop bomb. Superb How: Bottle 12oz, part of the 2011 Beer Camp Mix Pack. Consumed approximately 2.5 months after it hit the stores. The look: Partly cloudy golden-blonde body topped by a small off-white head leaving lots of lacings on the glass In long: The strong hoppy nose is grapefruits, overall citrusy but also piney. Nothing new under the sun here but the aroma was so fresh and vibrant, and my bottle was already more than two old (two months after the 2011 Camp Mix Pack was released). Taste is totally unbalanced and pleasantly so, this is a hop bomb. Basic neutral Premium, Plus™ crackers-like malts, some honey and caramel, but all that crushed by a truckload of sharp grapefruity, lemony and grassy resinous hops packing a ton of alpha acids. Bitterness is sharp and biting. This beer is bitter as hell but its extreme bitterness is a pleasant tasty and almost refreshing one. Another superb hoppy beer from Sierra Nevada. I find Ghidorah to be up there with the best Sierra Nevada hoppy beers (Torpedo, Harvest Wet Hop Ale, the retired Anniversary, etc.). Very nice Double IPA that is underrated because it is only $2 and widely available. Kind of cool that Sierra Nevada named a beer after a monster from the Godzilla movies we used to watched when we were kids. Good times. We were kids and we all wanted to grow up so we could do whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted... How’s that working out for you guys?
3.7 Bottle. High alcohol evident in nose. Hazy gold body. Strong hop flavor. Hmm, this was amazing last night when it was cold. Still really good at about 45 degrees. No lace. Loved the beer camp series.
3.7 Bottle. Grassy and floral hop assertive aroma. Sharp bitterness with lingering finish. Good strong IPA but with a few rough edges.
3.8 (Draught at Bishop’s Arms Folkungagatan, Stockholm) Amber colour with lasting, off-white head. Fruity, malty nose with orange peel, dried apricots, grainy malt and floral hops. Malty, hoppy taste with notes of grapefruit, orange peel and generous amounts of resiny, piney hops in a slightly vinous and quite bitter finish. More than medium body, with a solid malt foundation and a balanced sweetness. Very nice.
3.9 nose is very heavy quite fresh dry, bitter hops, heavy fruit, weak late hay, feel is broad, carb is mediumheavy, taste is dry bitter hops, bile, heavy lave leaves, alcohol, and menthol
3.2 Bottle. Amber with a big white head. Dry hop nose. Dry hop flavour. A little rough. Not a Torpedo.
3.8 Dark orange pour with a thick whitehead. Lots of good lacing on this beer. Aroma is sticky resin hops, citrus and grapefruit. Sticky sticky hops. Flavor is lightly malt and heavily hopped although the balance is working well. Tasty beer. Not a hint of alcohol, a good bitter burn on the back, but sweet enough to handle it. Tasty.
4.0 12oz bottle: Pours a clear orange amber with a clingy-lacing white head. Has a sweet light caramel nose with plenty of fresh resiny piny hops. Starts with good fullness and sweet light maltiness with good juicy citrus and piny hop flavor and bitter bite before a slightly drier bittersweet finish that hides the alcohol well. Very true to style, hoppy and yet quite drinkable.
