Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Across America West Coast Double IPA

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Across America West Coast Double IPA

The brewery says its new beer, which features five varieties of different hops, imparts hints of grapefruit, with a floral note that recalls orange blossom. At 8.5% alcohol-by-volume, a light malt body and dry finish complement West Coast Double IPA’s bold hop profile.

“This is an IPA that’s West Coast in style, which is fitting since the whole pilgrimage kicks of here in California in just a few weeks, said Ken Grossman, founder.”

3.9 This is a 24 oz bottle shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Pours a dark gold with a large long-lasting white head and excellent lacing. The nose is cap pee with citrus and pine. The body is medium plus and the mouth feel is resinous and with a touch of alcohol burn. The flavor is caramel malts and tropical fruits. The finish is not real bitter but shows the fruit and I get apricot at the end. The is not really a classic west coast IPA but is good drinking.
3.6 Bottle. Pours out a moderate golden color with a medium sized off white head. Aroma is of lots of pine, evergreen, sweet/lightly bitter citrus and some bready sweet malts. Taste is much the same, some of the complexities of the hops do not carry over into the flavor, pine, light citrus fruits, a solid amount of sweet bready malts, some strange herbal notes, mild spice and something that seems out of place in the hops, but I just can’t pin it.
3.7 From a 75 cl bottle shared at home. Pours a clear gold with a thick white head. Fresh lemony scent. Flavors of grapefruit and orange. Bitter finish.
3.4 Poured from a bottle it is a clear golden color with a slight head. The aroma is citrus and the taste is strong bitter flavor that ends with a white grapefruit sting
3.5 APPEARANCE - golden, turbid. NOSE - surprisingly underwhelming. The hops are in there, but no one added them to the end of the boil. FLAVOR - Good, but not great west coast style, but you can tell it’s higher alcohol (double IPA). NOTES - Overall it’s a bit underwhelming for it’s reputation, rating and pedigree (i.e. Beer Camp).
3.4 Light retention and light lacing. Smells of oranges, floral and malt. Tastes of caramel, citrus and pine. Medium bitter aftertaste.
3.6 Purchased at Binny’s in Chicago, IL; enjoyed at home on a cold November weeknight. Appearance is a cloudy gold with a thin white head. Aroma is light citrus and pine, light caramel. Taste goes down with a nice bitterness, light booze, grapefruit notes, citrus flavor. Overall it’s decent.
3.1 24oz bottle stamped, 062014 from Spirits Manahawkin. Poured a good looking light bronze with a fluffy bright white head. Aroma is just plain weak, notes of dry citrus, old orange slices, grassy hops, some wet grains and a touch of soapiness. Flavor has a slight touch of alcohol on the front followed by old hops cones, grass, straw, dry citrus and old fruit rind. Palate is pretty damn good, smooth medium to fuller body, slight touch of ABV, average tight bubbly carbonation and lingering dry bitterness. Meh, probably awesome fresh but surprised it dropped off so much.
3.6 Bottle cheers to Adza once again and shared with Jackson. Pours yellow with a sticky white head. Nose is very lychee driven with moderate resin, toffee and pine. Taste is very stone fruit forward with lychee, grass, earth and moderate spice. Almost comes out with a rye focus to it. Drinks well for the abv. Quite solid stuff
3.5 24oz bottle from Lacey Spirits. Poured a clear golden orange color with a finger of foamy white head. Aroma of bready malts, lemons, apricots, wet dog, and hints of pine.taste of bready malt, lemon pulp and zest, oranges, pine, and slightly medicinal.
4.4 24 oz bottle. Great hoppy nose. Hazy pale gold body. Flavor to die for. Really outstanding. Wish I'd been able to get my hands on more beer camp beer this year. Maybe will have to take a trip to Chico next year!
3.4 October 25, 2014 - bottle shared by Brian at Darkness Day. Yellow orangish pour with some head. Aroma and taste of hops and malt.
3.7 Bottle. Murky golden yellow pour with a pillowy white head. Lots of citrus. Floral. Some onion. Very nice.
3.3 Type: 24-oz. bottle Glass: Stone Ruination IPA From: Barons Market in Alpine, Calif. Price: $5.29 Purchased: Oct. 22, 2014 Consumed: Oct. 23, 2014 Misc.: N/A Poured a golden, honey, pale, hazy color with 2-to-3 fingers of khaki white rocky head. Haziness cleared up fairly quickly to a nice clear look. Various bubbles coming up from the bottom, but not overwhelming. Sporadic, uneven spots of foamy lacing on the sides of the glass. Very good-to-great retention on the top. (Sight - 4.25) Smelled lime, pine, wet Cascade hops, Citra hops, caramel, tangerine rind, mango, light pineapple, tropical hops, rye hops, iced tea and some floral hops. (Smell - 3.75) Taste wasn’t that great, to be frank. Got boozy rye hops, bitter tropical notes, wet Cascade hops, lime, pine, caramel, melon, mango, light grapefruit rind, spoiled tangerine rind, light onion and other cooked vegetables. (Taste - 3.50) Medium-to-light body. Oily texture. Lively carbonation. Bitter, abrupt finish. (Feel - 3.38) Was very disappointed. This beer was pretty average, maybe a bit better. I feel like I even overrated it a tad. (Overall - 3.50) 3.58 81 B
4.1 Poured from 24oz bottle at home. Perfect looking clear orange pour with white head. Citrus lemon and grapefruit aroma. Tropical candy fruity and even vanilla notes. Delicious beer - wasn't expecting this to be as good as it is
3.5 Bottle from Otay: Holy phucc is the aroma FUNKY. Strong aroma of boiled vegetables such as broccoli or cauliflower while a whiff of onion like hops and even perhaps cheese like esters? The beer is initially soapy in taste but then delivers some of the very same flavors as I picked up with my nose because a heavy dosage of onion flavoring still comes through in the flavor of the beer. The stronger point is that the quality bread like malts signature to SN support the venture into the hop wild side and the beer balances out for the heaping overload of hop with so many different breweries involved.
3.4 Pours a golden color with a white head leaving moderate lacing. Citrus and hoppy nose. Hoppy flavor up front with citrus notes, but of fruity sweetness in the middle. Mild for a west coast ipa, but good.
3.6 24 oz. bottle. Packaged on: 06/20/14 (I think). A hazy amber pour with TONS of little floaties and a thick and creamy beige head that leaves chunks of lacing behind. The aroma features lots of oranges, grapefruits, zesty citrus rinds, pine, and a bit of caramel. Floral. Lemons and wheat are really apparent with some warmth. Goes down fairly medium-bodied. Mildly sweet upfront in the taste with some caramel and a crisp graininess. Tangy citrus fruits and zesty rinds are present at the end. Tropical. A touch of warming alcohol and vanilla here and there. A unique spiciness throughout. As solid a beer as I expected.
3.7 Bottle. Orange gold. Tropical and floral with a nice malt balance. Better than I expected. Medium body carb and finish
3.5 24 oz bottle from Biggie Wine & Liquor. Golden-orange and pretty clear appearance with a fluffy, lingering white head and active carbonation. Citrus, grapefruit, pine, resinous hops and light floral notes in the nose. Similar flavor, medium plus hop bitterness, light malty sweetness and a touch of alcohol. Medium body with a crisp feel and a smooth finish.
3.7 Bottle. Hazy gold and white head. Aroma is floral, almond and tropical fruit. Taste adds a bit of peach and booze. Medium mouthfeel and carb. Really solid.
3.5 Enjoyed this double IPA, I would have loved to get more aroma but overall it's enjoyable.
3.8 Bottle via the Bozeman Co-op. Shimmering golden pour is very attractive, nice clarity, topped with a finger of sticky beige head and followed by heavy sheet lacing. Nose is herbal and floral, lightly sweet. Mellow, but rich hop flavors… if that makes sense. Probably not the freshest bottle on the block, but this is drinking well right now. Herbal and tea notes to go along with the floral hop. Lingering bitters in the tail. This isn’t overpowering or off the beaten path by any means, but a solid and dangerously drinkable DIPA.
3.6 Tallahassee, Fl - ABC Fine Wine & Spirits - 24 oz bottle. Slightly murky dark gold pour, frothy snow white head with a sticky white head. Aroma has a slight perfumey bent to it, a nice dollop of hoppy spruce notes. Solid IPA flavor with some juicy fruit hum notes, some solid citrus bitter notes, some pepper-like vegetable notes, just a hint of mint. Nice thick mouthfeel.
3.1 24oz bottle. Medium off-white head atop crystal clear light amber body. Aroma is moderately sweet, pine, some bread, orange/grapefruit, light alcohol. Taste is moderately sweet, orange, pine, some grapefruit, light caramel, alcohol. Medium body, some resin, light stickiness.
3.9 24 oz bottle. Pours light golden with small amount of off white foam. Strong pine and citrus aroma. Very pronounced hop bitterness on the center and back of the tongue that match the aroma. Clean finish that doesn't linger quite long enough. Very good beer.
3.7 Pours a light copper with a good head. Malty-resinous nose. Rich bitterness, but with some coarseness from high-alpha hops. A bit sweet for an IPA. Satisfying brew, but not an all-time great
3.8 24 oz bottle from Premier Gourmet. Pours a nearly clear golden colour with modest-sized white head. Aroma is catty, with some citrus and floral notes, as well as some caramel and grain character. Flavour also has lots of catty and dank character with some grapefuit, flowers and grass as well as a solid caramel and crackery grain backbone. Medium plus body. Carbonation on the ligher side. Nice beer.
4.1 Smells very bitter , by that I mean you get this hit of cat-piss and pine. Great name for a band. The taste follows the nose. A very bitter beer and I mean that in the best way possible. grassy piney cat-piss and a bit of alcohol. not bad. Not getting the floral hops but this thing has the right moves towards the bitter and badder hoop. Doesn’t hide the 8.5 at all. I’d suspect it was upwards of 10. Kinda of his a malt liquorish after taste not that thats a bad thing. pretty solid double. If you like bitter and a nice easy price? this is a no-brainer. Well definity re-visit.
4.3 I didn’t know what to expect with this beer since it seemed like a "Welcome to Beer Camp" beer and not part of the Beer Camp 12 pack. Wow, what an excellent DIPA this is! The first hit of aroma is that classic scent of a strong, bitter Sierra Nevada beer (Hoptimum, Celebration). Grassy, and slightly floral at the same time with a big wiff of caramel malt. Those follow right into the taste with a definite nod to Hoptimum but with a really catty, tongue piercing bitterness that seems to go even beyond that. It feels like it’s really high ABV (I would have guessed 10%), but I think it’s the hops giving it the extra bite. The sweet, bready caramel malt kicks in to mellow this somewhat and add balance, but the bitterness keeps boring through your tongue. There’s a bit of vanilla and pineapple in there too. Finishes with a delicious, long-lasting bitterness and sweetness that lasts for a long time. Damn I wish I’d bought a few more of these. This is my 700th rating and it’s fitting that it’s Sierra and something special like Beer Camp which was awesome! Cheers to Ken Grossman and Sierra Nevada for all they’ve done and continue to do for craft beer!
