Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Pat-Rye-Ot Revolutionary Pale Ale

Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Pat-Rye-Ot Revolutionary Pale Ale

2016 Beer Camp Across America Collaboration with Devil’s Backbone, Dogfish Head, Lawson’s Finest Liquids, Stoudts, and Trillium.

Pat-Rye-Ot is an “old-meets-new” take on a pale ale by brewers all located in the original 13 colonies. It features rye and apples, which were among the first ingredients used by American brewers in the colonies, alongside bold American hops—hallmarks of our modern craft beer “revolution.”

Brewed with Cluster and Experimental hops.

3.6 Bottle. Pours a cloudy golden with an off white head and aroma of honey, light spice, and hops. Taste is spicy up front, rye apparent with honey and hops leading to a crisp finish.
3.6 12 ounce bottle, 5/15/16. Hazy yellow, large fizzy white head, decent retention. Aroma of dank rye, honey, apples. The taste is rye, herbal and dank hops, pale malt, hints of apple. Medium bodied, lingering bitterness.
3.6 A good hoppy pale ale. On tap at Dove & Olive for SCBW. Listed as an apple pale ale here - was curious. Must have been a mistake. Nice clear gold with a simmering white head. Passion fruit and stone fruits. Pine resin. Bitter without sweetness. I like it a lot.
3.3 Bottle sample at Beer Camp tasting at Beer&Beyond shop. Hazy yellow-orange with a creamy head. Aroma is fruity and spicy, notes of bread and apples. Sweetish, fruity, malty, spicy, apples, nice hops touches, dry bitter finish. Medium-boded, smooth. Quite interesting.
2.6 Bottle sample at a Sierra Nevada Beer Camp tasting at Beer & Beyond, Tel Aviv. Hazy yellow-orange with off-white head. The aroma is grainy with notes of flowers and citrus, lactic. Grainy flavor, light hoppy bitterness, notes of citrus, hint of apple, rye spiciness, dry. Light to medium-bodied. Not so fresh.
3.4 Poured from a 12 oz. bottle it is a clear golden color with an off white head. The aroma is of citrus and the taste is peppery with hints of orange with a bitter finish.
3.4 From a 12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear gold with an off white head. Aroma of grain and citrus. Flavors of apple and orange. Bitter finish.
2.9 Bottle sample at a Sierra Nevada Beer Camp tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Hazy yellow with a white head. Aroma of stale hops, graininess, an apples note. Grainy flavor with a bit of rye, rather dry, with bitter stale hops, slightly citric, and a light apples note. Medium-bodied. OK, not fresh enough.
3.5 There are clever beer puns and then there is pat-rye-ot. Corny name, tasty beer. Spicy rye, crisp finish. I would not have guessed "apples" but it fits.
3.0 Pours hazy straw color with a tight, 3-finger white head. Mild citrus aroma mixed with a grassy note from the rye. Body is a lighter than medium and lightly oily. Pine and resin hops notes mixed with some grassy rye.
3.1 Pours light golden with a good head. Smells like bitter citrus.. Cool and refreshing, but a bit vaporous.
2.3 Not a fan of this. Aroma was weak and not good. Stale light beer smell with a slight green apple smell. Pour was a very light hazy gold with a one finger white head. Taste was very light and almost stale tasting. Not much flavor other than dusty hops and a slight green apple tartness. Couldn’t pick up any rye here. As it warmed more bitterness from the hops came out. Medium carbonation. All in all a boring beer
3.7 Bottle. Packaged on: 04/05/16. An amber pour with tons of little floaties and a thick beige head. Lots of grapefruits, oranges, zesty citrus rinds, Golden Delicious apples, caramel, and wheaty grains dominate the aroma. Medium to full-bodied for the style. Caramel apples and wheaty grains start things off taste-wise. Pears and tangerines in the middle. Rye bread, bitter grapefruits, zesty citrus rinds, and a fair amount of spiciness at the end. Plenty of warming alcohol throughout. Good stuff.
3.7 12 oz. bottle from a 2016 Beer Camp pack purchased at Stop ’n Go. Pours a cloudy pale gold with a lot of yeast floaters and a small white head that settles into a ring and patchy film while lacing the glass. Notes of citrus peel, apple, pear, mild rye spice, bright florals, pale malts - everything starts to pop after a few minutes after a light but muddled initial impression. Light-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a clean but bitter and fruity mouthfeel. Really grew on me as I drank it. Good, interesting APA.
3.6 Nice easy drinking rye pale ale. Citrus and tangerine. Some mash rye malt. Light bitter finish. Bottle from mixed pack.
3.5 On the sweeter side for an APA....rye and apples. Has a medium yellow hazy appearance. Some tropical and floral hop notes, but not quite an IPA in flavor. Brewers from the 13 colonies...leans more towards an American Pale Ale vs. English Pale Ale.
3.8 Tap at Bamboo. Big citrusy, hoppy nose with a bit of apple as it warms. Clean and crisp on the palate with some citrus and light dank, weed notes. Bitter finish with some light peppery character, although not enough to really say there is definitely rye in this beer. Still, a tasty brew.
3.5 12 oz bottle, dark yellow cloudy beer with strong carbonation. Rye aroma and taste, with apple flavor cutting the harshness a bit. Mild hops finish. Inoffensive.
3.4 Bottle: Poured golden with fluffy white head. Aroma is piney hops. Taste is light bitter hops with some spicy.
3.7 Bottle. Pours a golden crisp color with a light body and lots of flavor. Taste is hoppy but not too much. Well balanced
4.0 Pours a hazy golden yellow pour with a nice white ’ fluffy ’ head. Nose is upfront sweet hops with some malt backbone. Taste is full of flavor with a nice confluence of hops and well balanced rye....nice sweetness with some subtle fruit . Ends on the same tasting notes with a sweet dry finish . Nice APA ! Thirst quencher ! Quaff Score 8 / 10
3.4 12 ounce bottle shared with hayduke over facebook chat. Yellow gold and hazy. A thick white head leaves a lot of cool looking lacing. Aroma is of a shandy with lemon and grapefruit aromas. It tastes like one, too. It also has rye spice and earth. The rye is not that big. Malts are soft and pale. Finish is quite dry. This drank a lot like a spicy grapefruit / lemon shandy. Interesting beer.
3.7 Shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Thanks Dave for sending me this one. Pours gold with a white head. Nose of rye and fruit. Medium body. Flavor is big on fruit and rye and earthy hops. Very earthy. Finishes with spice and rye and bit dry. Oh yea and light bitterness. Very interesting take on a pale ale.
2.8 Thanks to altonbrownd for the bottle! Poured into a snifter showing well filtered dry dark orange peel with no head and foam around the rims. The nose shows basically nothing but upon warming up, shows grainy malts. The palate is fully carbonated and medium bodied. Light rye spiciness with light bready malts on the middle palate and the finish shows a light bitterness.
3.5 Good too although, probably the least complicated of all. NCIe to drink and aroma of good malts.
3.6 12 oz bottle. This one is probably overrated - I still found it to be quite nice and above average. So goes the rating world.
2.7 This is another one of those sticky rye pale ales that just isn’t much fun to drink. It’s pale and cloudy w/ a big head of mixed bubbles--rye beers do look nice. It’s got a strong savory hoppy sort of aroma, kind of borderline marijuana and cat pee territory if I’m being honest. I think I might detect a hint of floral softness from the apples used but, really, I don’t think I actually taste the apples and I don’t care. This is full bodied and bit sweet and resinous w/ the bitterness. Really, I don’t think there is anything wrong w/ how they brewed this. It’s just not a good recipe. I will try to pawn off the other one of these in the mixed twelve to a dinner guest.
3.4 12 ounce bottle A couple of singles made these latest Beer Camps worth trying. If this one provides the benchmark then I liked them better when they partnered with only a single brewery. It has hints of promise here or there but ultimately the results are average at best. I won’t be rushing to grab a whole box next year to be sure. Aroma / Appearance - The golden cloudy liquid bubbles under a fresh white head. Lemons, honey, and wheat break from a heart of rye. Hop forward and fresh it sends a clear message - this beer means business. Flavor / Palate - The lemon custard and bitterness that start each sip opens the door for a dry yeasty transition. Refreshing and low key textures disappoint ever so slightly; given the brands on the label I expected a bit more. Perhaps sometimes you can have too many chefs in the kitchen.
2.8 Bottle. Hazy gold, white icing. Citrus in the nose? There is a dryness here, hop bite is present but rye still invades to my disliking.
3.6 Bottle: Lightly hazed golden-yellow with a thick white head. Grapefruit, rye, grain aroma. Taste is rye malt, grapefruit-peel bittering.... Nice juicy-ness....
