Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Stout of the Union

2016 Beer Camp Across America Collaboration with Lost Abbey, Beachwood Brewing, Smog City Brewing, Societe Brewing Company, and Bagby Beer Company

This stout hails from the land of sun, sand, and surf and proves that beach beer doesn’t have to be light and delicate. Stout of the Union is rich, roasty, and full of deep malt flavor, creating a union of like-minded brewers together through beer.

3.7 Complex for a regular stout, much coffee and malt backbone. Certainly hit the style. Dark chocolate brown colour.
3.2 The smell is kinda strange to me, a dirty, bad coffee smell, almost like a hint of RC cola. Great brown color, light head. The taste is like the smell coffee, cocoa, little bit of RC cola to it, bitter on the swallow.
2.5 Black with small tan head and smells of roasted malt and slight alcohol. Taste is dark malts with an unexpected strong bitter bite. Bitterness hangs around for a while after. It’s OK but not great and for the big price tag on the sampler box overall not impressed.
3.7 New Beer Distributors, NYC bottle: pours black with a light brown head. Aroma is molasses, chocolate, light coffee, roasted malts. Taste is somewhat sweet. Taste is somewhat bitter. Pretty fat body. Nice complexity.
3.9 Shared with Stryklzone on Facebook Chat. Poured a very dark brown with a tanned head Noes of mostly chocolate. Medium plus body. Flavor is complex with chocolate, coffee, and burnt sugar. The finish is long and bitter. Dave mentions pineapple at the finish but while i never got the pineapple. Do get some tropical fruit. Overall a great beer.
4.0 12 ounce bottle shared with hayduke via facebook chat. A big tan 4 finger of foam. The beer under is very dark brown with amber hues. Aroma is chocolate with roast and earth. The flavor is burnt toffee with something like chicory. Like all others in this series this has interesting complexity. Figs that are somehow bright and then milk chocolate then burnt molasses. Flavors seem to come in waves of uniqueness. Walnuts, spices, fruit, dark bread, dry bakers chocolate, pineapple, etc, etc. I love this series more with every offering I try. This one is a delight!
3.5 At Tom’s place, Pours black with a beige head, aroma of cocoa, coffee, chocolate, flavor is bitter with, chocolate, coffee, malt, caramel, bitter, medium bodied
2.6 12 ounce bottle, 5/15/16. Dark brown, large foamy brown head, good retention. Aroma of chocolate and roasted malt. The taste is dry roasted malts, chocolate. Thin bodied. Kind of a disappointment.
3.8 12oz bottle. Pours dark brown to black with a slight tan head. Great stout with lots of flavors coming through including coffee and chocolate. Somewhat sweet but well balanced and delicious.
3.8 Bottle sample at Beer Camp tasting at Beer & Beyond shop. Pours brown black with a tan head. Aromaof espresso, cocoa, caramel and chocolate. Bitter-sweet, flavors of black coffee, ash, roasted grains, caramel, chocolate, prunes, a bit acidic and dry. Medium-full bodied, smooth. Well made stout.
3.7 Bottle sample at a Sierra Nevada Beer Camp tasting at Beer & Beyond, Tel Aviv. Opaque black with brown head. The aroma has lots of dark chocolate, notes of coffee, nuts and roast. Sweet and bitterish flavor with notes of coffee, dark chocolate, roasted malt, some herbs, a bit alcoholic. Full-bodied. Very nice.
3.6 Bottle sample at a Sierra Nevada Beer Camp tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Black with a tan head. Aroma of roast, coffee, chocolate, a bit of nuts. Flavor is a bit sweetish, roasty, with coffee, dark chocolate, and a bitter finish. Medium to full-bodied, rounded. Very nice, hearty.
3.6 Bottle. Packaged on: 04/06/16. A deep mahogany pour with a thick and creamy mocha head. Cocoa powder, dark chocolate, roasted coffee, caramel, pine, and grapefruits in the aroma. Relatively thin to medium-bodied on the way down. Dark chocolate, cocoa powder, and caramel feature prominently upfront in the taste. Burnt toast and chocolate cake qualities come through as things warm up a bit. Bitter coffee and grapefruits finish things off. Some alcohol is present from beginning to end. A long-lasting dry finish.
3.1 Decent and well made stout. Aroma was pretty weak. Dark roasted malt with notes of dark chocolate. Pretty weak though. Pour was a beautiful deep dark brown/near black with a half finger tan head sitting on top. Taste was better than the aroma. Rich dark chocolate and coffee flavors with a thin mouth feel. Roasty and slightly bitter finish. Good carbonation.
3.5 Roast and some caramel. Some chocolate. Good balance and quite easy drinking. Bittersweet finish. Black pour with good head and lacing. Bottle.
3.7 Very roasted. Dark black. Smooth. A lot of coffee. Cocoa nibs. Tasted at Deliverance trip.
3.4 Poured into a shaker glass. Nearly black with a thick, creamy tan head. Aroma is mild but sweet and chocolatey. Flavor starts quite roasty and transitions into chocolate malt. Medium bodied and there seems to be some hop flavor present too but it's hard to tell with the roasted malt notes. Not very complex but tasty.
3.5 Pours a pitch black color with a mocha Java head . Nose is burnt malt with a little smoke. Taste is also burnt malt with bitterness and smoke . Finishes in the same tasting notes with a long burnt malt ending! Quaff Score 7 / 10
3.5 Dark brew with small tan head, little lacing. Aroma of roasted grain, burnt toast, cocoa, notes of burnt coffee and nutty overtones. Taste is moderate clean sweet malt up front with burnt toast and coffee overtones. A bit of chocolate and nuttiness emerges and ends with a bitter burnt grain and diminishing sweetness. Very energetic on the tongue.
3.6 Nice stout but a little heavy. Tj brought it over in the Beer Camp 12 pack which is amazing! It reminds me if Guinness in a bottle in that you can skip actual dinner and just drink it yo be full.
3.8 Draft at Sierra Nevada Mills River. Nearly impenetrable black. Thick and persistent khaki head. Sappy and complexly malty aromas of pen ink, caramelized raisins, burnt toffee, malted milk balls, espresso, maple sugar and light smoke (roasted barley). Fluffy and creamy mouthfeel. Captivatingly rich waves of fudge-soaked black plums and an inky vibrancy wash over the sappy richness with tremendous grace. Tremendous malt decadence is met with an undercurrent of drying, cocoa-tinged roast and the springiness of chocolate-covered espresso beans. Stiff notes of cookie extend from the pale malt, echoing the crunchy char accents and reinforcing the beautiful malt structure. Adequate dose of residual sugars, which recall molasses as they cause the lips smack, gel with a nice measure of vibrant dark fruity esters to contrast with the complex maltiness. Smattering of roasted barley acidity cuts the viscous sugars and builds on the bright ester medley. Deep java notes resurface and pillar the pervasive sappiness with their oily succulence. Skillfully integrated, yet sturdily hopped, finish reveals sticky sap notes clinging to smoky roast and vivid cocoa-kissed char. Prunes, espresso and chocolate fudge flavors linger in perpetuity. A supremely luscious, quintessential American-style stout that pushes the envelope on both the malt and hop front. Hopefully this isn’t a one-and-done offering and will make a return to the SN lineup someday, because it’s truly excellent!
3.3 Pours a very nice dark brown with ample tan head. Aroma of hops and malt. Taste is a bit complex, slightly sweet up front, with notes of chocolate, malts, and mostly hops in the back. This is not my favorite stout, but is certainly worth a try.
3.6 Bottle from the sampler. Deep black color. Malty nutty chocolate taste. Very tasty desert style beer
4.7 12 oz bottle from the sampler case. All of these are really good and quite a surprise from the mostly average Sierra Nevada company. Try one before they’re off the market. One of the best stouts ever!
4.1 Bottle from mix pack. Pours black dark tan head. Nice rich cocoa aroma. Roasty profile, dry with malt presence to support. Hops also have a nice role here.
3.7 Pours opaque cola-brown with a tight, 2-finger tan head. Aromas of coffee and chocolate. Maybe some celery too. Body is medium and a touch oily. Mild astringency to the finish. Flavor of coffee with a touch of char. Some celery too. Chocolate notes appear as it warms.
3.7 Nice stout, plenty of rich roasted malts, dried dark fruit with licorice, oats and decent hoppiness on the backside. Overall a nice filling stout.
3.6 Poured into a tulip glass, dark brown with a rich tan head. Roasted malt aroma, creamy with full body. Bitter chocolate and roasted grain flavor, bitter hops and roasted malt finish .
3.5 NICe too. Had the six Beer Camps in a box. Thick but still quite easy to distinguish in all its elements.
3.5 Bottle from DQ beer station, Houston. It pours black with a thick tan head. The aroma is rich roasted malt, big coffee character, cacao, charred wood, umami, toasted sesame and soy sauce. The taste is rich roasted malt upfront, charred wood, liquorice, umami, soy sauce, chocolate, cacao nibs, earthy, quite spice, warming alcohol with a dry, roasty finish. Medium + body and high, foamy carbonation. Pretty decent overall, although the soy sauce aspect detracts from the overall experience.
