2.6 Cask at CK. Pours a clear, deep maroon with a dwindling beige head. Nose is twizzlers and white grape juice. Taste is watery, sharper nutty bitterness, cloying white grape juice and heavy cherry juice box. Sugary, bland, odd bitterness.
2.7 Black/red pour with short white head. Sweet malty aroma. Great medium malt feel. malty, nutty flavor, a little sour with a sour but robust aftertaste.
3.6 Served on draft at Capital Alehouse Downtown. Pours a clear brown color with a medium sized tan head. Decent head retention. Aroma of chocolate, nuts and faint hops. The taste is fruity with herbal hops, chocolate and nutty malts. Medium bodied.
4.1 Medium bodied, dark, mocha flavored with a little hoppy kick. Very flavorful with a nice head. One of my favorite beers. A shame they stopped bottling it.
3.6 On tap at Beer Revolution. Pours a dark brown with a small light tan head that has good retention and leaves some light lacing on the glass. The nutty toffee, earthy hops, and a bit of caramel. The taste has a light sweetness with a bit of nuttiness and toffee. There is also some caramel and a bit of earthiness. The finish has a hint of bitterness and a little sweetness. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Descent brown ale. I think I like this one a little more than Tumbler.
3.0 Bottled, 355ml from Bellingers Garage, Grove, Oxon. Light chestnut with off white short head. Sweet caramel flavours straight off, sucrose with a hint of maple syrup. Thin on the palate though. A bit of a strange one.
3.4 On tap. Light red/brown with off white head. Barley, nutty, malts. Well carbonated, sweet, malty, somewhat dry and nutty on the end.
3.6 on tap-pours a tight light tan head and copper/brown color. Aroma is roasty medium malt-some toffee. Taste is sweet roasty medium malt-toffee, some earthy hops. Easy.
3.7 Draft at Fountainhead. Pours a deep reddish brown with an off-tan head. Nose is toasty and nutty, some faint cocoa and faint EKG. Pretty clean nose, mild esters. On taste, a really nice sweetness that is balanced by the bitterness from both the hops and roasted malts. Pretty soft and clean, never roasty. A bit nutty. Pretty nice and imminently drinkable pint for sure.
3.1 Hmm difficult to score. It has a nice mahogany pour with a mild hoppy aroma. The taste was hop, grass and sweet malts, but it was a little thin for me. Still good.
3.3 Amber pour with an off white head. The aroma is toasted pumpernickel and mild hints of earthy hops. The flavor is toasted and slightly spicy with hints of caramel and a mild bitter finish. Prickly mouthfeel.
3.3 Fairly clear red/brown beer, with a thick tan head. Aroma is sweet malts and caramel. Taste is similar sweet malty flavors, caramel, and then a nice bitter finish.
3.7 A really good representation of the style, it has a hearty brown color and a full head. It has a nice toasted nutty flavor and a bit of a wood y finish.
3.1 12 ounce bottle. Label date of 2010. Pours a medium brown with a small tan head. Aroma of malt, grain and spice. Taste is caramel malt, spices and some hops. Thought well balanced. Nice session beer.
3.4 On tap @ Rattle N Hum. Brown and clear with very little head. Aroma of toasty malts, nutty. Medium to light body with a light bitterness on the finish and good carbonation.
3.2 Bottle/12oz - Pours a dark brown in color which has a nice ruby coloring if held to the light. Small white head that produced some minor lacing on the glass. Aroma is malty with some roasted malts and very minor hints of some hops. Flavor is mellow with roasted malts, caramel and very little of the hops detected earlier. An OK brown...
3.3 At the Cockney Pub, Aarhus, DK. Tap, 040910. Brown with beige head. Aroma of malt and spices. Flavor with caramel and a dry roasted note.
2.6 Stuff isn’t bad at all. Had on cask at pizzeria paradiso. Huge creamy head with light drankable flavor and slight roastedness. Very easy drinking and smooth. Is it possible Sierra made a light beer?!?
3.7 Tap at Standings, NYC. Pours a semi-clear brown with a medium, white head. Lightly roasted malt aroma with some brown sugar. Nicely sweet flavor, malty, some caramel. Light to medium in body with average carbonation. Finishes with modest roast and bitters. Very good.
3.5 Cask at Birreria Paradiso in Georgetown. Chestnut color, thick small head. Aroma of nuts and caramel. Taste of butterscotch with a bitter finish. Nice enough.
2.7 another old entry from old notes .. . brown, murky .. light head, sturdy wispy lacing .. . are germans resilient? .. . an average brown but not impressive, even for Sierra Nevada ..
3.5 Draught at the Red. Medium brown color, good clarity, with a small white head. Toasty grain and a touch of chocolate malt in the aroma, with a light fruity roundness and background suggestion of hops, though not like they put significant late hops in this. Nutty and toasty malt flavors with medium sweetness and a somewhat ample bitterness for the style, though not at all over the top. There is a caramel quality to the sweetness that gives a nice body impression, though gives way to a lingering bitterness in the finish. Medium in body with soft carbonation. Pretty solid brown that is light in roast, but has a nice rich malt character.
3.5 On tap for growler fills at Half Time. Pours a clear orange hued brown with a thin beige head. Nutty malt and sweet caramel on the nose. More nutty malt with a light bitterness. Crisp, malty, nice gentle balancing bitterness on the finish. Good middle of the road brown.
3.5 Tap at BT. Pours a nice medium brown with a slight fluffy off white head. Aroma is clean yet some fruity esters come through, nutty, light toast hints of chocolate and earth. Flavor is nutty and moderate sweet, light fruity esters, mostly clean crisp and a bit on the light side, but well done for a brown.
3.4 Sierra Nevada Brewing Company--Brown Ale Seasonal Release 2006--12 oz. Bottle--5.50% ABV--45 IBU’s? (3.75 / 5.0) Brown Ale--Tight creamy lacy head. Clear brown red hint color. Bottle Conditioned sediment hint. Mild toasted hoppy front. Crisp mild sweet tangy mild bisquit toffee weak Brown Ale flavored hoppy body. Crisp hop spice end. Odd Brown. Sampled 10/2/2006.
3.1 Cask @ The White Horse: Very easy and malty on the nose. Totally English in its way, something of horse food about it. In the mouth there is some UK style straw-like hoppage playing off of malty richness. It is as smooth as anything, very sessionable. Balanced with maybe a little more weight behind the malts.
3.5 Draft @ Sierra Tap House. Pours a clear, medium-brown color; off-white head with good retention and fine-bubbled lacing; nice pour. Decent aroma of cola and light chocolate; nicely dry but somewhat relaxed. Medium mouthfeel: nicely juicy, citrus bitterness coupled to a cola- and chocolate-centric core; very drinkable, nice hop character; a very hoppy, lively brown. Medium finish: nicely toasty, mineral bitterness and quite dry. Solid stuff here.
3.5 Pours brown with a thin tan head. Smelly of caramel, some spicy hints, nutty. Taste has some resiny hints, some roasty hints and some fruity hints. Not a typical brown ale, but good.
3.2 Tap at Blind Tiger. It’s hard to believe I haven’t had this before, but there you go. A lightly herbal/spicy brown malt nose initially with a little bit of crackery character. Fairly toasty with a little bit of roasted malt astringency on the back. It’s a decent, lean-bodied brown ale, but it’s nothing crazy either.
3.1 Found this 2006 bottle in the back of my beer fridge! Pours a medium brown with a thin tan head. Toasted malt and nuts on the nose with a slight smokiness. Nice nutty flavor with a creamy finish. A decent brown ale.
