Sierra Nevada / Firestone Walker Beer Camp Torpedo Pilsner

Sierra Nevada / Firestone Walker Beer Camp Torpedo Pilsner

2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

Torpedo Pilsner is a hop-forward take on the crisp classic lager. We and the folks at Firestone Walker share a passion for New Zealand hop varietals, so we loaded our legendary Hop Torpedo with southern hemisphere hops for a fruity, floral twist on the pilsner style.

Just down the road from us in California’s Central Coast wine country, this rock star brewery has earned “Mid-size Brewery of the Year” at the World Beer Cup four times. Like us, Firestone is passionate about hops. Their skill with the ingredient shines in their Pale Series and elsewhere in a long beer lineup driven by a premier brewing team.

3.9 Poured from bottle into glass. Pours a pale gold with 2 finger white head. Aroma - some mild tropical fruit hops, touch of citrus, little biscuit. Taste - lots of tropical fruit and citrus on palate, some biscuit. Really nice.
3.5 Yellow pour with a white head. Aroma is malty, floral hops. Taste is a malty base with a crisp finish. Floral hops. Little fruity, more floral. So-so lacing.
3.5 12 ounce bottle from the Beer Camp Across America variety 12-pack. A little late opening this, I suppose. Pours a slightly hazed light yellow hue with one finger of white foam. AROMA of wet grains, tart lemon, with some floral an grassy hops. FLAVOR has mouthfuls of fruit (some tropical, lemon rind, other citrus), honeysuckle, a wet graininess, and mild honey malts. Actually finishes with some notable bitterness. Dry and clean finish with a thin mouthfeel. Not really much a fan of the style, but Sierra and Firestone have done a good job with this one. (396, 943)
3.4 Bottle. Pale yellow, some haze. Pale malty, light grains, some exotic tropicals on nose. Med bodied, real nice smooth soft feel. Some citrus, pineapple. And a lot of other fruits I cant put my finger on right now. Tasty, smooth nice clean. -- bb
2.7 Gold with a loose white had, and active carbonation. Aroma is a honey and malty front, followed by a pleasant hoppiness in that background. Taste is mildly sweet, with a pine and floral hoppiness lingering.
3.7 Grainy aroma with straw and subtle grassy hops. Pale straw color and hay with a thin white head. The flavor is light up front, has some Puls and biscuit malt in the middle and finishes very crisp, clean, and dry with a nice grassy hop bitterness. Light to Medium-light bod6, crisp and smooth. Overall, this is avery impressive hoppy Pils. It’s drinks like an authenic Pils with just a touch more (not too much more) hoppiness than expected.
3.5 355ml bottle from Saveur-Biere PKGD: 05/29/14 - Pours hazy pale yellowish with a small white head. Aroma of earthy notes, crisp malts, hay, citrus and grassy notes. Taste is earthy, grassy and crisp with notes of bready malts, hay, citrus, butter, fruits and floral notes. Finish is crisp, earthy and bitter with some hay, butter and grassy notes. Interesting hop profile, feels almost like a kellerbier. Quite good despite it’s not very fresh anymore.
3.3 35,5 cl bottle @ tiong, bottled 29.05.2014 Kellerbier-like aroma with peaches, some fruity malt and hayish notes. Also orange. Flavour has orange, hayish notes and some mint. Finishes with grassy and herbal hops. Generously hopped kellerbier, I was surprised by how german this was.
3.3 Pours light yellow with a nice white head. Aroma of light grain, hay, grass, light lemony citrus. Taste is lemon Pez, dusty, doughy malt, and cracker. Light body and light bitterness. Nice crisp pils with a good hop component.
3.4 Tasted from bottle. Pours a clear gold with soapy white head. Good lacing. Aroma is lemon, grass, grains and some herbal spiciness. Taste is lemony with some floral notes and grass. Light to medium bodied. Crisp mouthfeel. Excellent pilsner.
3.6 Quite a hoppy pils. Pine, cereal, grass in the aroma and taste with hop bitterness at the forefront. Gold pour, decent sized head. Wouldnt mind this being a regular seasonal release
3.6 December 19, 2014. Bottle at home. Light hazy golden with a medium sized dense white head. Aroma is floral honey notes, apricots, grain and pine. Taste is light sweet grain notes, light bitter citrusy pine, crisp. Finish is crisp cereal with floral honey notes, light bitter. Light bodied, average carbonation.
3.8 Very nice. It’s beers like this that are changing the face of the style. Nice pale malt and pine hop aroma. Nice clear golden color with a good white head. Average palate with strong cabonation. Bold flavor that was refreshing with a strong hop presence but not too harsh to take away from the style’s subtleties.
3.8 12 ounce bottle from Hayduke that we had over facebook chat. This beer pours with some haze and is white golden. A nice frothy white head. A pleasant aroma of bright citrus and apricots. The flavor begins quite bitter but that fades. A lot of the same flavor the aroma brings. Citrus and apricots but with some grapefruit and lemon, too. A bit of honey appears later. This is really nice. It is another example of this series blowing away styles and making very tasty beers.
3.9 This was shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Pours a lemon gold with a long lasting white head. Nose of grains, some apricot and white grapes and flowers. Medium body. A very smooth and clean mouth feel. The flavor is rich and greets you with a blast of fruit, lemon citrus, and an earthy bitterness. The finish is a lemony bitter and dry. This is a really nice beer and wonderfully drinkable. .
3.0 Bottle. Shared by Brian. A very clear light gold with a minimal fizzy head. A grainy crackery with lots of very mild fruity NZ hops but the hoppiness has really dropped off May 2014. Bitter & boring with just a fleeting hop fruitiness. Mostly crackery graininess. Past it’s prime.
3.5 Des notes herbacées astringente, de la citronnelle et des céréales miellés. L’amertume est tenace et un brin démesurée mais c’est un baume sur la soif adéquat.
3.8 Bottle. Pours a hazed gold with a medium sized white head. Spicy citrus hops on the nose over a background of bright grain and crackers. Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel, crisp bright hops and snappy grain. Smooth clean finish with some dusty yeast and smooth bitterness.
3.5 Light golden color color with one-finger head. Some tiny suspended particles really light up the beer. Bread and biscuit malt aroma. Dusty, floral, tropical fruit aromas, too. Light bodied with average co2. Taste is mildly sweet with a touch of fruit and slightly grainy malt flavor. Quite bitter. Finish is a little harsh at cold temps. Hop bitterness is accentuated by the dry finish. I think the beer succeeds in what it is trying to do. However, it comes off slightly harsh to my palate.
3.5 Bottle thanks to sonnycheeba. Pours a transparent golden with thin off white head. Aroma and taste of crisp malts with some citrus flavors.
3.4 Bottle poured into a shaker. Pours a clear, pale gold with a half finger of white head. Aroma is crisp with light herbal hops. Taste follows aroma, light bitter with a hint of honey. Light bodied with a thin texture. Lively carbonation and a very long finish. Great brew, light and refreshing - my perfect pilsner.
3.9 Clear golden with a thin white head. Aroma is light hops. Flavor is crisp with light hops. Finishes clean with mild dry bitterness. Wife: 3.8
3.6 Straw yellow with soap bubble head. Found mine to be very floral, light toast and biscuit, malt. Bitter finish. In addition to floral is a good amount of fruity flavor.
3.3 Bottle - big foamy head, very pale straw color, moderate herbal hop aroma and flavor, mild malt backbone, mild yeasty spice, not bad overall
3.5 Pours a clear golden with a frothy ivory head that sticks around for a while. Crisp, malty aroma has a strong and somewhat sweet fruity overtone. Flavor is crisp and malty like a proper pilsner, with a fruity undertone and hoppy and vegetable hints. Firm, smooth texture leaves a subtle but lasting fizz. Vive les collaborations!
3.5 bottle. Golden with one finger head. Solid hoppy pilsner. Light body with a big hoppy bitter kick in the finish. Crisp and clean, just like you want from a good pils.
3.7 Pours two fingers of head on a clear golden colored body. The aroma is biscuits, grains, toasted malt and lemon. The taste is moderately bitter with a touch of honey sweetness and a dry bitter finish. Great balance and flavor. The texture is light and crisp. Enjoyable.
3.8 This is a really tasty pilsner with a bit more hop flavor. Aroma is a bit hoppy with a lagerish touch. The taste is faintly fruity hops with really light malt note and a very crisp finish that is refreshing. My only wish is that a little more toasty malt flavor was paired with the hops. Overall, good for a pilsner.
4.1 12-ounce bottle. Pours a deep gold color with white frothy head and constant bubbles. Nice floral hoppy aroma. Medium body, mellow hoppy flavor balance. Even sweet/dry balance. Mellow maltiness. Hoppy crisp finish. Very pleasant.
3.4 Type: 12-oz.bottle Glass: Pint mug From: Albertsons in Alpine, Calif. Price: $25.99 for the variety Beer Camp Across America 12-pack Purchased: Oct. 17, 2014 Consumed: Oct. 19, 2014 Misc.: Collaboration with Firestone Walker Brewing Company; Packaged May 29, 2014 at 9:46 a.m. Poured yellow, golden, straw, hazy color with three fingers of creamy white rocky head. Cleared up as it went down. Saw some bubbles coming up at different parts of the glass, but nothing crazy. Good sporadic foamy lacing along the sides of the glass. Very good retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 3.88) Smelled boozy corn malts up front, immediately followed by hoppy pilsner notes. Grassy hops, Kix cereal or Corn Pops, sourdough bread, honey, peppery spices, herbal hops, New Zealand spices and light floral hops. More pilsner than hoppy, but pretty nice on the nose. (Smell - 4.00) Tasted a lot like the nose. Still more pilsner than anything else, but more bitter than the smell. Sharp corn cereal (Kix and Corn Pops), grassy hops, sourdough bread, hay, honey wheat, New Zealand hops, faint floral hops, herbal notes and slight citrus zest. (Taste - 3.75) Light body. Thin-to-oily texture. Lively carbonation. Bitter, abrupt finish. Got better as it went down as the beginning was a bit rough. (Feel - 3.63) I was all over the place on this one. Initially I wasn’t a fan, but it grew on me a bit as it went down. Definitely more pilsner than hoppy. (Overall - 3.75) 3.79 85 B+
