Sierra Nevada Flipside Red IPA

Sierra Nevada Flipside Red IPA

Citrusy and fruit-forward hops soar over a smooth malt body.
Flipside finds the perfect balance between hops and malt in this easy-drinking red IPA. It features just enough smooth and slightly sweet malt body to support huge citrusy and tropical fruit-forward hop flavors from the use of Simcoe, Citra, and Centennial hops.

3.3 Found in bottle at Ingles in Franklin, NC. The malt sort of overpowers the fruity hops a bit but is a good fall red IPA option.
3.9 I love this beer. Pours an attractive reddish copper color with a big, thick retained off white head. Aroma is hoppy, piney and grapefruit. Taste is pleasingly bitter and sweet. This to me is a wonderful example of the Red IPA style. Another, among many winners from Sierra Nevada.
3.5 Very reddish, lives up to its name as a red IPA. Floral taste thats reminiscent of a typical IPA. I liked the hops in this particular beer, well crafted beverage.
4.0 From the IPA variety 12 pack. Pours a deep red color. Good bitterness, not overwhelming.
3.9 12 oz bottle from 4-way IPA variety 12-pack Appearance: pours deep reddish amber with a thick frothy tan head about an inch thick. head retention is good and some decent lacing is observed. Aroma: darker caramelly malts and citrusy, and herbal hop aromas. a hint of toffee. Taste: follows aroma with a malt forward theme but its combined with a bold, almost intense bitterness that smashes the palate. Palate: medium bodied, with an oily and rich texture. pronounced astringency and lively carbonation. Finish is long with lingering bitterness and mild sweetness. Overall: if you like either amber/red ales or IPAs you will enjoy this one. the malt combination is flavorful and the IBUs are such that there's no denying this is a full-on iPA. I like it.
3.8 A great looking pour, a vivid amber red, thick messy ivory colored head. Nice uniform effervescence throughout. Nose is toasted pine nuts and caramel. Caramel, cooked oranges, mild citrus, traces of dark fruit in the tongue, good feel. Good take on the style
3.1 pours a medium copper with a thick off white head. Not much aroma to speak of. Light pine I guess. The taste is quite decent. Moderate bitter hops with light citrus. A rather quick watery finish. Not bad, but was expecting more. I'm normally a big SN fan.
4.0 Bottle. Hoppy aroma. Medium bitterness, dry. Part of IPA box. Foamy head.
3.4 Bottle. Citrus aroma. Malty bread grains and citrus hop. Full head. Creamy texture. Smooth and drinkable. Medium bitterness.
3.5 12 oz. bottle. Amber and clear with a creamy beige head. Aroma is fruity and earthy. The flavor begins with the malts and they bring the earth and sweetness. An interesting mix of hops are interesting and nice. They are fruity and spicy. The tropical and citrus are surprisingly muted, though.
3.9 Pours a clear red with on off white head leaving sheet lacing. Nose is resinous hops.Body is light. Taste is sweet malt with earthy hops. Bitter aftertaste. 12 oz bottle in the 4-Way IPA 12 pack Bottled: 12/14/17
3.7 Pretty special little pint from Sierra Nevada, a big, piney, resinous hop bomb with a massive biscuit-n-caramel sweet spot at its center. Lemon, grapefruit, dank, earth, and pine all make their presence known immediately, but it's the gentle, subtly decadent malt base that steals the show, allowing the hops to do their thing before easy into a bittersweet, soothing fade. Pours a sultry red with a brief off-white head and modest lace. Pine and biscuit on the nose. Perky texture prevents the malts from growing cloy. Drinkable as hell. If Sierra Nevada'd only ditch the Tropical Torpedo that 4-Way IPA Mix Pack would be amazing.
3.8 Bottle (Dec 18, 2017 bottling). Head is initially average sized, creamy/frothy, light brown, fully lasting. Body is hazy dark amber. Aroma is moderately malty (toasted nuts/grain, cookie), lightly to moderately hoppy (apricot, grapefruit, orange), with notes of earth, autumn leaves, black tea. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic. One of SN's better IPAs, so it's a shame this is only available occasionally (and also a shame the 4-Way IPA mixer pack is 25% drain pour thanks to the gimmicky coffee IPA, because the rest is quite solid). Similar to their Northern Hemisphere in that it's more malty than a typical IPA...rich and nutty/cookie-ish, as well as earthy and autumnal. The hops themselves are not especially interesting, aromatically, but support the malt and other aromas just fine. Very nicely balanced in the mouth, with a luscious initial sweetness that is very quickly cleaned up with bracing bitterness in the finish. Very velvety mouthfeel, but not too thick, so it's really quite a joy to drink. Both quaffable and sippable depending on your mood, which is a rare thing.
4.0 Dark amber color with absolute clarity. A dense, soapy offwhite head rests on top. Some toasted grain with a caramel touch are the backdrop for a very dry and dank pine forrest that leaves the pallet dried out and wanting more.
3.5 Bottle @home (rating backlog). Pours amber almost brown, white head. Nose is citrus fruits, toffee, slight pine. Taste is oranges, toffee, again slight resinous pine, bitter finish.
3.6 (Bottle) Reddish amber colour with frothy, beige head. Fruity, hoppy nose with notes of orange marmalade, apricots, toast, treacle-toffee, honey, pink grapefruit, caramel and floral hops. Fruity, malty taste with orange marmalade, apricots, grapefruit, honey, caramel, toast, toffee and a generous citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, fairly dry. Tasty and well balanced. Nice one.
3.8 2014 vuoden versio.
3.7 Pours a deep dark orangish amber color. Aromas of big hop action, sweet malts, and more hops. Flavor has some bready maltsy tastes with nice grapefruit and floral hop taste.
4.1 Közepes, nagyon tartós hab, rézvörösbe hajló barna szín. Illata citrusos, határozott narancs és mandarin héjas dominanciával. Íze ipás, gyanta nélkül. Markáns, határozott keserűvel indít, ami mellé végig édes-savanyú, intenzív gyümölcsösség társul, mandarinos, narancsos vezetéssel. Utóíze hosszú, markáns keserűvel, határozott gyümölcsösséggel. Nagyszerű, közepesen testes, kiválóan csúszó, kifejezetten frissítő nedű.
3.2 Poured a slightly hazy, dark chestnut brown with nice orange highlights. There was initially about a 2 finger slightly creamy tan head. The aroma was mild with floral, citrus and some earthy peat scents. The flavor was mild was well. Initially there was some light citrus followed by an earthiness. The finish was slightly on the hoppy side with just a hint of a bite along with more of the earthy taste
3.2 Dark brown pour, puffy tan head. Smells caramel, some earthy hops. Palate is sparkling, medium bodied. Tastes sweet at the start with some maltiness, finishes slightly dry... It’s alright.
3.2 Dark caramel color with reddish edges, small beige head. Mostly grapefruit peel has some light sweetness similar to golden brown sugar. Citrus hops up front with a bitter middle, some residual sweetness and a bitter aftertaste. Not bad at all!
2.3 Bottle at csakajo. Light brown-copper colour with a stiff white head. Nose is slight citrus(?). Taste is slightly nutty. This is the same what i also think about black ipas/saisons etc. Mediocre beer sold by its colour. As it get warmer gets slightly better but still meh...
3.3 2015 bottle. Dark amber color with thick off-white head. Nice hoppy aroma with malty notes. Citrus hoppy taste with caramel, pines. Light hoppy bitter finish.
3.1 Mild aroma of dried leaves, clay, and vinegar. Clear tea, thick sticky yellow head. Astringent lemon zest, clay, and dried leaves. Soapy tea finish. Medium body, soft carbonation.
3.4 Bottle at home. Deep amber pour. Off white head that leaves some lacing. The aroma is toasty malt and pine. Tastes of piney hops, orange zest, a christmasy spice palate with hints of cinnamon, and a resinous, sticky finish.
3.0 Pours a slightly hazy, dark copper color with golden amber edges and a half finger off-white head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Spotty lacing left behind. Sweet, slightly spicy malt aroma with a subtle resinous hop character. Some earthy, grassy hops with a touch of citrus but the nose is dominated by caramel malt, rye, bread and toffee. Really weak hop presence. Disappointing for an IPA. Thankfully there’s much more of a hop presence in the flavor. On the fuller end of medium bodied with a blast of dry, bitter hops that linger over the sweet and spicy malt notes into a sticky, dry finish. Dank and resinous with grass and pine needle flavor as well as some subtle grapefruit and citrus rind. This is countered by a sweet malt backbone that has a strong caramel flavor. There’s also some toffee, bread, faint dark fruit sweetness and. a spicy rye component that nicely compliments the hop profile. Well balanced and easy to drink. A nice hoppy beer for the fall season.
3.9 355 ml bottle, in Nevada City. Reddish brown colour. Has the typical West Coast hop aroma and flavour, with notes of citrus and pine, but also some nice nutty notes from the malts, which contributes to a lovely balance. Another good beer from Sierra Nevada!
3.3 Beautiful beer, dark red and foamy big head. Smell is great hops, fruit and some grain? Taste is not as great as expected...it’s a balance of malt and hops that comes off more neutral than anything
