Sierra Nevada / Garage Project Beer Camp Campout Porter

Sierra Nevada / Garage Project Beer Camp Campout Porter

We’re playing off the camping theme of Beer Camp with a beer we’re calling Campout Porter that evokes the flavors of marshmallows toasted over an open fire. The beer features special ingredients such as malt smoked over manuka wood (a tree native to New Zealand) and manuka honey. Additionally it contains beechwood honey from California and Tahitian vanilla beans to reflect the sweet and roasted notes we were looking for in this collaboration.

3.3 Bottle. Clear dark red with a beige head. Aroma suggests sweetness in a vague blanket, roast, some medicinal notes. And wow it is really sweet - but at least it's not so vague: there's honey and vanilla, sweet buns and quite firm woody notes crimp things a bit at the end. That finish - which is bitter, wood-smoky, slightly astringent and has some of the bush herbal notes of the manuka/ tea tree - really pulls the show together. Not much like a porter. Interesting, a promising draft of a better beer.
4.2 12 ounce bottle from a beer camp around the world variety box poured to tulip glass Sight: black, small foam, some lacing Smell: slight aroma of malt, nutty Taste: low-medium bitterness, some sweetness Mouth feel: good follow through, good finish, bitter aftertaste Overall: Very good beer, ok to repeat not to look for
3.2 From the mix pack. Bottle->pokal. Deep brown with moderate khaki head. A: vanilla, chocolate malt, lactose. Sweet. T: same, with some slight molasses. Too sweet and too much vanilla.

Aroma: malts, smoked malts, vanilla..flavor: gentle honey, intense vanilla, malt profile with notes of smoked, caramel, toffee, hint of coffee, chocolate...dry, bitter finish. 3.7 12oz bottle from the Beer Camp set. Pours clear dark mahogany with a creamy tan head and good lacing. Cocoa, roasted malt, light coffee notes, floral hops, sweet caramel. I don't pick up the honey, but vanilla is prominent and Medium bodied with a long lasting drying finish. Excellent.
3.0 12oz bottle. Pours black with a moderate, quickly-dissipating beige head. Aroma is roast, honey, some vanilla, and light smoke. Taste is honey, roast, vanilla, some bittersweet dark chocolate, and toast. Relatively dry. Some lacto-ish creaminess - where the advertised 'marshmallow' presumably comes from. Bitter finish. Medium body. Medium carbonation. Chewy mouthfeel.
3.7 Pours dark brown with a tan head. Aroma of smoke, chocolate, vanilla and spice. Taste is medium sweet and medium bitter.
3.7 It pours brown with a iight brown head and has moderate head retention. There are roasted aromas with a low smoked flavor, honey, and spice. There are blended flavors or roast and smoke with some spices. There is a light level of wood, vanilla, and hints of honey. It has a moderate feel with a moderately light bitter aftertaste. Overall, this is a well blended roast and smoke beer with flavors that provide a good balance and support.
3.3 BOTTLE. Cola black in colour, thick fluffy head.. Bitter aroma with some light fruitiness.. I didn't agree with description, sweet dark malt (honey?) with a bit of a chilli bite.. Sourced RW
3.8 Sample during the "Collaboration Beers On Deck 2!" event on 08/13/2017. Dark brown color with a medium thick tan head that diminishes gradually to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of smoked malt, coffee and chocolate. Medium body with flavors of charred malt, vanilla, bittersweet chocolate and coffee. The finish is oaky and smokey with a malty aftertaste. Pretty good overall.
4.2 Bottle. Sweet honey aroma with notes of vanilla, smoke and roasted malt. Pours dark brown with one finger of light brown head that has excellent retention and good lacing. Starts with rich roasted malt flavors with sweet honey flavors to go with a nice full body. Finishes smooth with great vanilla and smoke flavors. Wonderful porter.
3.8 Bottle from Beers of the World. Aroma of malt, smoke, marshmallows and honey.
3.5 Bottle. A- Smoky, honey, subtle vanilla. A- Dark brown color, dark liquid, beige head. T- Toasted marshmallow, subtle honey, smoke, vanilla, dry, mild bitterness. P- Full body, average texture, average carbonation, roasty finish. O- Interesting beer. At first I thought this might be another take on a Smores beer which seems to be popular now. This was definitely more "campfire" like. At first you get that toasted marshmallow aroma and taste from the vanilla and honey with mild char notes. That quickly fades into a slightly bitter and dry roasted malt finish on the palate. Pretty solid.
3.6 Bottle. Dark amber pour with a huge frothy head. Smoke, vanilla, honey. Dry finish. Not bad.
3.0 Pours black with a frothy head; tobacco and dark chocolate on the nose; smoke evident in the palate. I'm sure I'm tasting a good porter but I am not a fan of smoke laden brews.
3.6 Bottle from the box set. Dark brown with orange tints and a low head. Smoky nose, chocolate, vanilla. A bit of honey in the flavor, smoky vanilla, tasty but a bit thin.
3.8 Bottle shared by Jack, thanks! Pours a clear deep amber with a brown hue and a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has roasted malts and dark grains with some smoke and a bit of honey underlying. Flavor smoke and roasted malts supported by dark grains and a bit of honey.
3.5 Bottle from the Beer Camp mixed pack. Deep brown with a small head. Lightly smoky malt. Some dark chocolate. Light leather. General Unami flavor. Dried smoked grass. General toast. Medium/full body. Solid.
3.6 Bottle from SN Asheville- Pours pitch with a tan head. Sweet burnt caramel, roasty, some vanilla, not getting any chocolate. Nice!
3.6 Bottle from Wegman's Malvern. Pours black with a khaki head. Leaves trace lacing in the glass. Big smoked malt notes on the nose and tongue. Also getting some honey notes but not so much the vanilla. Finished clean. Solid.
3.8 Bottle, Ann Arbor, MI. Light Cola appearance. Bright aroma followed by deep oak resin. Raisin and Bourbon flavour. Somewhat boozy finish.
4.0 Pours a clear reddish brown with a fluffy beige head. Substantial cling. Aromas of smoked chocolate malt, coffee, dark fruit and licorice. Flavors are cocoa, coffee, plum, licorice, cola, toasted bread and honey. Finishes with a smokey flavor. Clean mouthfeel. Overall, this is extremely good. Very complex. One of the better porters I've had.
3.6 Bottle: Deep, rubied-brown with a smooth beige head. Chocolate, charred wood scent. Taste is slightly bitter chocolate malt, some ash.....almost a bitter-sweet berry note, or maybe that's what the honey and smoke combo does for my taste buds.... Nicely different, nicely bodied.....very good.
3.8 On tap at Vultures Lane. Pours orange black. Chocolate, toffee, vanilla, honey, toast. Nice big body. Sweet and tasty.
3.6 Poured from bottle dated 4/19/17 light brown with a nice off white head. Aromas of vanilla, cinnamon honey and dark fruit. Taste is good and has a light mouth feel notes of smoke vanilla and roasted malt.
3.7 Part of the sampler pack. Pours dark brown with tan head. Taste is smoke with a sweetness in the background. Rich malt prevails as it warms.
3.5 12 oz. bottle shared by Chalumeaux. Dated 4-19-2017. Color is a medium brown with light carbonation. Aroma is honey, vanilla, mild smoke, and maybe chocolate. Flavor is light smoke, light coffee, and light oak. The body is decent for a porter and ends with a vanilla bean sweetness. I feel like the few months in the fridge helped the ingredients marry well together. Based off of some of the awful beers in this years release, this was surprisingly decent.
3.9 Can sample at a tasting at troubles’ place. Thanks troubles. Clear brown with a beige head. Honey and vanilla with some dried fig aroma, slightly woodsy. Slightly smoky, honey and woodsy taste. Medium body, maple, some vanilla and some wood finish, mildly carbonated.
3.7 Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma has a medium light smoke note with moderate roast and light chocolate. Some toasted bread and dark caramel notes as well. Light vanilla and honey notes. Pours a dark brown that is almost black with a medium sized, thick, creamy, tan head that exhibits really nice retention. Moderate lacing and small legs. Flavor is somewhat sweet with some moderately strong malt notes and a dry finish. Moderate roast and toasted bread notes with some lighter cracker, caramel and chocolate notes. Medium smoke that lingers a bit in the finish. Moderate bitterness that also lingers and seems to get stronger in the finish. Medium light honey notes and light vanilla. Mouthfeel is medium to medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Medium low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an interesting beer. I’m not sure it reminds me of smores, but it has some nice smoke notes to it. I wish the vanilla were a touch more prevalent but its still a nice smoked porter. The smoke seems to impart some sweetness upfront, but finishes dry and a bit astringent.
