Sierra Nevada / Kiuchi Beer Camp White IPA With Yuzu

Sierra Nevada / Kiuchi Beer Camp White IPA With Yuzu

Hitachino Nests most popular beer is their White Ale, so it was a natural starting point for this collaboration. We opted to add hops (as we are known to do) and made a white IPA based on the flavor profile of the White Beer. Kiuchi suggested incorporating the use of yuzu (a small Asian citrus fruit) into the brew, and we found the bright lime-like tartness perfectly accentuated the flavors of hops and the spicy notes of the classic witbier yeast.

3.0 12oz bottle. Pours yellow with a moderate white head. Aroma is lemon, coriander, yuzu (I think that's what the spice I can't place is?), grass, some melon, and more spice. Taste is lemon, coriander, light orange, wheat, spice, light resin, and a light earthiness. Medium body. Moderate carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel.
3.4 Bottle. Pours out a slightly hazy golden color with a moderate white head. Aroma is of some spice, light citrus notes, fruity yeast, some grain and light earthy notes. Taste is much the same, some peppercorns, slightly tart citrus, some spices, lemon peel, bread crust, some light earthy notes.
3.5 12 oz. bottle from the Beer Camp 12 pack. Poured bright gold with a white head. Citrus and wheat aroma. Light sweetness with sharp citrus flavor. The yuzu I guess. I did enjoy the sharpness of the yuzu. Some biscuit malt in the back ground. Medium bodied with a dry finish. Pretty good.
3.3 Spicy citrus aroma in a golden pour. Unexpectedly sweet spicy body with strangely silky finish. Seems to be all over the place to my mind - and consequently, not something I'd be looking to have again.
3.4 Draft at Arnold's - nose is citrus. Sip adds a new fruit. Caribbean mint drink aromas. Drinks like a session ipa. Dangerous.
3.8 Tap @ Keyaki Beer Festival Autumn 2017. Pours golden-whitish, sticky white foam. Aroma has witbier funk, orange juice, quite clear Kiuchi house flavour profile there. Nice yuzu spice and bitterness come out in taste, hoppier than usual white ale - but has kept the juiciness and overall character. Good one, was enjoying this a lot.
3.4 Bottle from Beer Camp mixed pack. Slightly hazy golden pour with a small head. Some engaging, spicy aromatics. Gentle coriander, Belgian yeast. Drinks fairly dry. Peppered tea on the finish. Cracker-like graininess. Light body, bright carb.
3.5 On tap at Vultures Lane. Pours gold. Coriander, orange, wheat, bread, little pepper Decent body. Good.
3.5 Part of the sampler from bottle to pint glass. Clear pale yellow with full white head. Fruity throughout and a nice addition to the sampler pack.
3.4 Can sample at a tasting at troubles’ place. Thanks troubles. Clear gold with a white head. Chocolate and nutmeg, some grass and citrus hoppiness in the nose, bitter, nutty and spicy taste, citrus and a little bit of resin too. Medium-to-full body, fizzy, slightly dry and bitter finish.
3.6 12oz bottle pours with a clear gold body that supports a dirty white head of foam. The aroma offers up sweet pear flavored cotton candy, sugary malts, a thin banana note and then a mild tropical fruity hop sensation. The taste delivers smooth sweet malts and vaguely pear to apple like fruity sweetness. Toward the finish honey drizzled tart apple meets up with a mild juicy tropical fruitiness. Not bad. Too sweet though.
3.4 Yellow liquid with an moderate sized, off-white head. Scents of pale malt, wheat, light spice and fruit. Wit-esque. Much drier in the front than I expected. Dry malt and spices, with coriander, mace and hint of allspice. Just a little malt tailings in the finish. Dry linger. A quenching IPA.
3.6 Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma is citrus forward with quite a bit of bright yuzu character. Light grain notes. Light citrus and resin hop profile hiding behind the yuzu. Pours a fairly clear, golden color with a large, pillowy, white head that exhibits solid retention as it slowly recedes into itself. Rather high amount of lacing and small legs. Flavor has a faint acidity and medium light sweetness with a dry finish. Moderate yuzu notes with some light citrus, pine and resin hop notes. Moderate bitterness and a hint of alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low, but present alcohol warmth. Overall, an alright beer but its more like a random white beer with yuzu than an IPA. The hop profile is completely overshadowed and the beer is not that bitter.
3.7 Bottle: Fairly clear, bubbly, lighter yellow-gold with a white head. Aroma is tropical, pink grapefruit, orange-peel....a little melon-like note. Taste is just about sweet-bitter neutral..... Wheat malt, mixed citrus, a touch peppery..... Very pleasant, and light to drink. Really good.
4.0 Bright hazy yellow, medium head and lacing. Subtle nutmeg, hint of coriander, bright citrus, spices, cigar, sour cherry, woody. Another welcome surprise from Sierra Nevada, not a big spiced or flavored beer fan yet this one wins me over. $25.99/multi 12 pack, beer camp, 12oz bottle at Total Wine and More, Boca Raton, Florida
3.2 Appearance: Pours a near clear, yellow-toned body with a medium-sized, diminishing, white head. Smell: Floral, spicy notes (a tad perfumy) from the nutmeg and coriander with a citrus accent from the yuzu as well as the hops in addition to some soft wheatiness. Taste: An opening of wheat with minimal sweetness turning to peppery, earthy spiciness and some underlying bitterness. Citrusy tastes come forward, again, it’s part hops, part yuzu. Coriander is present, but overshadowed with the bloom of nutmeg, a spice I welcome in many culinary applications, but I’m just not so sure I’m appreciating it in this beer. There’s a blending of the spice and citrus, floral tones as you head towards the dry finish. Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Overall: The spiciness was a bit more punchy than I’d care for and I wasn’t altogether thrilled with the nutmeg. Still, I’m all for a twelve different beers variety pack.
3.5 12 ounce bottle. Large foamy white head. Mild sweet, citrus aroma. Bitter, tart citrus malt flavor. Peppery hops in middle. Crisp, dry hoppy finish. Notes of lime peel and black pepper.
3.7 Pine and pineapple aromas from a very slightly hazy pale yellow body with a foamy white head. More pine and pineapple in the flavor along with lemon and lime juice and a bit of kiwi. Nice spicy, peppery hop bite that makes it hard to believe this is only 20 IBUs. Almost seems to have a light Belgian yeast flavor. Just a bit of clover honey sweetness balances this out nicely. Body is light and a bit watery which lets the delicate flavors shine here. Finishes light and dry with wheat/hay aftertaste and a lasting earthy bitterness on the tongue. Another excellent beer from the 2017 Beer Camp series.
3.5 Bottle. Belgian yeast aroma with notes of yuzu, coriander, nutmeg and some floral hops. Pours clear golden colored with a large off white head that has excellent retention and some lacing. Starts with yuzu citrus and Belgian yeast flavors with a little bit of wheat malt. Finishes dry and spicy with coriander and nutmeg flavors as well as some floral hoppiness. Interesting and different, not bad.
3.3 Bottle. Golden beer with an off-white head. Citrus aroma. Citrus and spice flavor. Medium bodied. Good bitterness. Citrus and malt linger with light spice.
3.7 A steady pour produces a two-finger thick, pale, white colored head that leaves a nice lacing pattern on the sides of my glass. The beer is a light golden color that shows a clear, pale yellow hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells strongly of citrus zest, definitely Yuzu, lime, some kumquat, and Meyer Lemon zest. There is a hint of dried-straw / pale grain cracker notes in the finish of the aroma. Nicely crisp, with a smooth bite of citrus zest and hop bitterness towards the finish, the beer is light bodied, though not thin, and has a prickly carbonation to it. Lingering flavors of Yuzu, lime zest, a touch of kumquat, and some sour tangerine zest notes dominate. A touch of grassy, sort of herbal, astringent, and bitter notes add some balance to the dominant citrus character. This is quite nice, and I am really enjoying this. The Yuzu and Witbier yeast make for an easy drinking (too easy at 7% ABV), hot weather beer that is cool and refreshing
3.7 Bottle from Facebook in Menlo Park, CA. Aroma is lemon, bright floral, grassy Japanese meadows. Taste is crispy, slightly tart and mild citrus peels. Refreshing and bright.
3.8 Aroma: mix of citrus, grape. sweet candies and pine. Interesting and tender. Taste: citrus and floral nortes from the start, sweet background with grape flavor. Good white ipa, without annoying yeast domination
4.0 Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a slightly cloudy golden yellow with a medium sized white head. The aroma is spices, wheat and banana. The taste is wheat and citrus with some spices in the background.
3.4 White grape, lemon, coriander aroma. Clear amber, thin head. Orange and lemon, white grape, spearmint. Grass finish. Light body, moderate carbonation, slightly dry. Plenty of Belgian character.
3.7 Bottle, Ann Arbor, MI. Pale yellow, slight haze. Intense aroma. Honey and passion fruit. Sweet, more honey and slight spiciness. Really nice.
3.4 Pours gold with a white head. Aromas of pine and citrus. Flavors of pine, citrus, stone fruit and floral hops. Pretty nice.
3.6 Bottle from the mixed pack picked up at Beach Liquor FWB. Enjoyed by the pool on a sweltering hot day. Aroma and flavor were citrus, wheat, and something like sweet tea. Very refreshing, enjoyable and quickly gone!
3.7 [My bottle (12oz) shared w/ HogTownHarry & GregClow] Pours a deep pale gold with an average size semi-lasting frothy white head. Interesting aroma of citrus and coriander along with wheat, yeast and light hops. Citrusy and herbal flavour. Light bitter finish. Medium bodied. Enjoyable.
3.5 12oz bottle light gold pour with white head aroma and taste was a bit of spice and tea with some bitter hops had an almost acrid asprin aftertaste
