Sierra Nevada / Mikkeller Beer Camp Thai-Style Iced Tea

Sierra Nevada / Mikkeller Beer Camp Thai-Style Iced Tea

Mikkeller has opened several world-class craft beer bars all over the world, most recently in Asia. We wanted to apply this globetrotting take to our collaboration brew. We found inspiration in a classic Thai iced tea: the spiced tea and condensed milk classic ubiquitous in Thai restaurants. The result is a spiced amber ale, brewed with black tea, sweet orange peel, tamarind, and star anise with lactose added for a full and creamy mouthfeel.

3.8 12 ounce bottle poured to tulip glass Sight: dark dull amber, small tan foam that lingers, some lacing Aroma: not a lot, malty aroma Taste: medium bitterness, some sweetness, bit sour almost not noticeable Mouth feel: good carbonation, sticky, good finish, good aftertaste Overall: Very good beer, very good fruit beer
3.2 12 ounce bottle. The beer is a clear copper with a white head of foam. The aroma has moderate spice notes and a strong sweet and fruity character. The more I drink, the sweeter it becomes. Some citrus peaks through occasionally. Medium body and medium carbonation.
3.2 Pours hazy orange with a white head. Aroma of orange, licorice, and black tea. Taste is heavy sweet, light bitter and light sour.
3.3 12oz bottle from the Beer Camp pack purchased at Brook Falls in Brookfield. Lightly tangy. Lightly citrusy. 12.6
3.3 Sample during the "Collaboration Beers On Deck 2!" event on 08/13/2017. Clear golden color with a thick white head that diminishes gradually to an outer ring. Partial rings of lace. Aroma of citrus, tea and malt. Medium body with flavors of herbal tea, orange and malt. The finish is spices and malt. Decent overall.
3.2 Bottle. This was interesting brew. Definitely had a super sweet taste with tons of spices especially anise added. It was kind of tasty, but still a good beer to try.
3.3 Bottle. Golden orange color with a modest white head. Aroma is mild, a little bready malt and spice. Tastes spicy and floral. Actually reminds me of Belgian yeast in a way, sort of fruity esters and spicy. Lively carbonation and a spicy end.
1.8 Crisp, clear copper and orange coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall just off-white head. Aroma of alcohol, sugar, grass, grain, pungent astringent notes and perhaps some tea? Medium-bodied; Assertive sweet and pungent astringent flavours with a lot of grain, alcohol and sugars throughout with a very mild flavour throughout and nothing at all cohesive in the slightest with no real style they had in mind at all. Aftertaste is just as scatter-brained with some sweetness, a ton of grain, even more alcohol and somehow even more astringent bitter notes that don't show anything worthwhile. Overall, this is a very wasteful beer and it could have been something decent at least, but this thing is a pure mess. Nice to sample as part of the twelve pack, and if for some reason this is the only beer you are missing from your twelve pack or can't find as a single, consider yourself lucky! I sampled this stubby twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 12-August-2017 for US$25,99/twelve pack, sampled at home in Washington on 09-September-2017. Sadly, the only reason this is even as high as it is rated is because it starts with MIK and people for some strange reason go crazy and think it has to be a good beer. It is not.
3.2 355ml bottle. Hazed light amber pour. ARoma is licoricey and furity. .Flavor is licoricey tea, some sweetness and bitterness.
3.0 Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma is interesting but doesn't really remind me of Thai Iced Tea. There are some tea notes along with red apple, citrus and tamarind. Fairly fruity and ester-forward aroma. Pours a somewhat hazy, copper color with some brown hues and a medium small, fairly thick, white head that exhibits good retention. Flavor is moderately sweet with some lactose, honey and light caramel. Moderate bitterness with the anise making an appearance in the finish. Light citrus notes with more tamarind and red apple notes. Light tea notes. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, this beer is odd and I'm not really sure the Brewers have ever had a proper Thai Iced Tea, because this doesn't taste like anything I have ever had. Really not great.
2.9 Pours the color of tea with the matching aromas to boot - small compact head. Spice on the nose with a acerbic palate. Strange and indeed tea like.
3.2 Copper gold with a beige head. Served in a snifter. The aroma is cream and black tea but I don't pick up much on the spices. Maybe I served it too cold. Medium bodied, raspy carbonation and the taste is big lactose sweetness then some spices. The chai character starts to open up as it warms. I choose to pair this with some ice cream. Which accentuated the spice and cut the lactose right down rendering the beer dry. Nice when paired, on it's own it's a bit much.
3.1 Bottle from the box set. Nose is lemon, chai, light caramel, iced tea. Hazy orange amber with a low lacy head. Very spicy flavor, peppery, tingly, cinnamon, cardamom. Also orange, tea, cream. I actually quite like this, but not as beer--it isn't the least bit beery, but a nice Thai style iced tea cocktail. Tasty, but too sweet.
3.2 Bottle shared by Jack, thanks! Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of lemon and tea with grains underlying. Flavor has grains and tea with a bit of a lemon bite and a hint of anise.
3.1 Bottle from the Beer Camp mixed pack. Golden pour with a huge white head. Fairly faint nose. Citrusy nose. Light, earthy spiciness. Some lactose. Fairly tart but easy drinking. Fuller mouthfeel than expected. Bright carb.
3.3 Deep golden color with a taller ecru colored head. Surprisingly little in the aroma department. Some dry malt and grain scents along with a hint (I am really searching for something here) dry spice. Light sweet start. They obviously did not want to blow anyone away with the spices. Full, smooth feel. As it warms a little more spice comes out, with mild anise and citric zest. Very smooth for the ABV, yet I want a bit more in my tea
3.6 Bottle. Orange citrus aroma with notes of black tea, lactose sugar, tamarind and star anise. Pours cloudy amber colored with one finger of off white head that has excellent retention and lacing. Starts with orange citrus, black tea and lactose sugar flavors. Finishes smooth and refreshing with spicy notes of tamarind and star anise. Tastes a lot like a Thai iced tea, good, interesting and different.
3.2 Clear, amber color. Aroma of malt , spices, citrus and tea. Sweet taste with lot of spices and moderate bitterness at the end. Interesting beer.
2.9 It pours golden and clear with an off white head that had good head retention. It has a highly spiced aroma with low caramel and moderate tea like qualities. The spice is most prominent in the flavor with a tea like flavoring in the background. As the beer warms the orange begins to blend in more with the other spices. It has a moderately heavy, but creamy feel to it. It finishes semi dry with a spicy tea like aftertaste. Overall, this is certainly a spicy beer with some background notes and slight malt to it.
2.6 Can sample at a tasting at troubles’ place. Thanks troubles. Clear gold, white head. Indeed aroma of tea - verbana, licorice and some white miso and hibiscus. Tea taste - sweet, spicy, some fennel. Medium body, fairly fizzed, abrupt spicy finish.
3.6 Dark chocolate, black raspberry nose. Clear amber, thin head. Licorice, orange. Medium body, easy carbonation. Very unique, pretty neat.
3.2 bottle. deep amber with one finger head. there’s a lot going on here and it doesn’t all work, but it is creative and interesting. tea, citrus, spice, licorice. a little bit hot booze-wise. wouldn’t seek this one out again, but glad i tried it.
3.2 Bottle from Facebook in Menlo Park, CA. Aroma is Thai tea, licorice, tamarind, maybe some galanga. Taste is muddled tea, some spices. Unfortunately the flavors are muddled and don’t blend well together.
4.2 Poured from a 12 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a mildly cloudy dark gold color with a small white head. The aroma is tea and licorice. The taste follows the nose. A unique flavor, very good.
4.0 Aroma: tea, malt, hints of citrus Taste: malt, grain, strong tea flavor. Hints of citrus and honey. Lite spicy aftertaste
3.0 Bottle poured a hazy orange amber with a lasting creamy amber head. Aromas of tea, licorice, fruitiness and light lemongrass. Palate was light bodied and smooth. Flavors of tea, licorice, orange and fruitiness with a smooth lingering fruity licorice finish.
3.4 From a bottle. Pours clear amber with a fizzy off white head. Tastes like herbs, vegetable, straw, mint, and tea leaves. Love guy body and low carbonation. Smells like tea leaves, mint, herbs, vegetable, and straw.
3.1 Looks good...a murky amber color, frothy, small bubbled ivory colored head. Aroma is apple, woody spice. Sort of falls flat on the tongue, decent feel with the lactose, subdued citrus, earthiness, weak spice.
3.2 Bottle. Amber beer with a cream head. Light lactose and light spice aroma. Lactose and tea flavor. Medium bodied. Lactose and tea linger with light spice.
3.2 Bottle: Cloudy, brownish-yellow with a thin, off-white head. Tea, mild caramel scent. Taste is tea, a spot of milk, grain malt. Just a little peppery in the aftertaste. Pleasant.
