Sierra Nevada / Ninkasi Beer Camp Double Latte

Sierra Nevada / Ninkasi Beer Camp Double Latte

2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

Inspired by the perennial café favorite, Double Latte combines two of the greatest things in life: good coffee and great beer. Oregon’s Ninkasi Brewing knows their way around a good cup of joe. Featuring cold-press coffee from the legendary Stumptown Coffee Roasters and a dose of milk sugar, this coffee milk stout is a rich and roasty treat.

This young-gun brewery has a locomotive charge. A rich conversation at a local bottle shop in 2005 has morphed into a Pacific Northwest staple. Named after the Sumerian goddess of fermentation, Ninkasi’s first batch of beer was Total Domination IPA and it remains a must for those with a lupulin itch.

3.9 355ml bottle from Saveur-Biere PKGD 05/30/14 - Pours pitch black with a smooth head. Aroma of roasty malts, coffee, dark chocolate, milky lactose notes and cocoa. Taste is smooth, slick and slightly roasty with loads of coffee, mocha, hints of milky lactose notes and dark chocolate. Finish is roasty, slick and smooth with notes of coffee, mocha and dark chocolate. Pretty good.
3.7 Pours cola brown with aroma of coffee, roasted malt, and lactose. Coffee flavor with roasted malt, milk. and touch of bitterness. Very nice beer.
3.6 Black pour with a brown head. Aroma is coffee and some bitterness. Taste is coffee, sweetness from lactose. Tasty beer. Nice balance of the coffee bitterness and the lactose. The hops are kept in check with lactose and coffee.
3.6 Last of the beer camp series for me! Pours a deep black/brown, espresso head. Aroma is big coffee, caramel, roasted malt, cocoa, some sugary fruits. Flavor is espresso, bitter cocoa, cream, dark fruits, sugar. Med/full body, well carbonated.
4.0 Really enjoyed this. Dark brown to near black appearance with coffee colored creamy head. Light milk chocolate coffee and toasted malts on the nose. Taste is medium sweet rich and roasty with a creamy soft palate. Well made and great.
3.9 Bottle. Black, light tan top. Very pleasant soft milky coffee on nose, roasty malts, some sweet milky licorice. Isn’t aggressive at all, just lingering there, without being weak watery. Smooth mouthfeel. Excellently balanced. Super drinkable, leaving a long clean light milky coffee finish. Really nice beer.
4.3 Bottle. Rich chocolatety aroma. Opaque black body with thick tan head. Excellent lace. Basically tastes like it smells. Rich sweet dark toasty flavor with more chocolate than coffee. It’s been years since I had a latte, let alone a double latte, so don’t recall if, like this beer, a latte tastes more like a dessert than coffee. Excellent for the style; just not my favorite style.
3.9 This was shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Poured dark brown almost black with a tan head. Nose starts out as coffee and then coffee arrives. Medium plus body. Smooth creamy mouthfeel .Flavor is lactic sith a lot of coffee and chocolate in good balance, and a long bitter coffee based finish. Really good and enjoyable.
3.9 12 ounce bottle from Hayduke that we had over facebook chat. This pours very dark and has a smallish tan head. Not a big aroma but it offers lactic and roasted notes. A little cocoa, too. The flavor begins with coffee. It has a very authentic aspect to it. Some interesting lactic notes. Later the chocolate emerges more. Just a little fruit from hops. Later the coffee returns to prominence. The brewers did a nice job with this one. Well done!
3.9 January 10, 2015. Bottle at home, bottled may 30, 2014. Black with medium sized brown head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, milk and caramel. Taste is sweet caramel and lactose, light bitter roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Medium bodied, soft carbonation.
4.4 Tasted from bottle. Pours black with a thick tan head with excellent lacing. Incredible aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, milk and caramel. Taste is also excellent. Perfectly balanced. Coffee espresso, chocolate, toffee, caramel, biscuits and roasted nut flavors. Probably the best sweet stout I've had.
4.0 12fl oz bottle bottled 5/30/14. Pours black with a half finger, creamy tan head that sticks to the glass. Aroma has great notes of dark chocolate milk, coffee, a hint of nuttiness, caramel, and bread. Really great. Taste is fricking awesome. Creamy dark chocolate, coffee, caramel, bread, and an espresso bitter finish. Perfectly balanced. Full body with a medium carbonation. Creamy in the mouth with a dry finish. Overall probably the best coffee beer I?ve had. Perfectly balanced with a great, creamy mouth feel.
3.8 Bottle, pours black with tan head. Aroma is roasted coffee and chocolate. Taste is sweet up front with a bitter coffee finish, tasty
3.8 Aroma is strong espresso, chocolate, black patent. Black with a tall, medium density tan head. Taste is roasty, with a solid coffee background, mild chocolate, and cream.
3.6 Bottle. Dark brown beer with a brown head. Chocolate and coffee aroma with light sweetness. Coffee and light chocolate flavor with lactose. Medium bodied. Lactose and coffee linger with chocolate.
4.0 12 oz bottle with a packaged date of 30 May 2014. This dark brown ale looks essentially black and opaque in th glass and is topped by a durable and very creamy tan head. Aroma: fine mix of coffee and dark roasted grains in nearly equal measure. Taste: Excellent bitter-sweet balance: mildly bitter in keeping with the coffee and dark roasted grains, but clearly too bitter to be considered a sweet stout. Lingering aftertaste of black coffee and black bread. Feel: medium body is creamy smooth despite near medium carbonation. Carbonation is higher than average for style but nicely soft. O: excellent and certainly one of the best, if not the best, of the dozen 2014 special SN Beer Camp releases.
4.1 Bottle. Pours out almost pitch black with a moderate tan head. Aroma is of deep roasty/earthy coffee, lots of chocolate, light sugary sweetness and some mild lingering bitterness. Smells like a really good coffee was used. Taste is complex, mouthfeel is silky and smooth. Complex roasty/earthy coffee notes go with a touch of creamy sweetness, burnt malt, mocha, some light notes of hop bitterness and a smooth finish. This is a really good beer, perhaps the best of the beer camp this year.
4.2 Btl pours opaque black color with a khaki billowing head, looks like a memory foam pillow. Tons of lace on glass. Aromas of milk chocolate, espresso, caramel and a faint whiff of alcohol. Tastes of mocha latte, toffee, cereal and earthy hops. Full body, velvety mouthfeel, nice carbonation and a smooth slightly dry finish. Damn this beer is smooth! Extremely easy to drink stout that is perfectly balanced. It coats the tongue well, like a big wool blanket on a cold winter night.I would have to say "this might be my favorite in the beer camp line up". Home run!
4.1 [Bottle (12oz)] Pours a very dark brown with a large lasting frothy light-brown head. Some lacing on the glass. Aroma of lots of coffee followed by roasted malt, some light hops, chocolate and lactic notes. Flavour’s the same, lots of coffee along with chocolate, light hops, lactic notes and a big coffee finish. Medium bodied. A good balance between coffee and hop bittering. I really enjoyed it.
3.9 Bottle: Poured black with loads of carbonated bubbles, head was frothy light brown about finger and half high. Aroma is sweet milk chocolate with light coffee. Taste is strong coffee bean with alcohol burn and soothing malt chocolate finish. Dry palate remains.
4.0 On tap @ Chuck’s CD. Pours creamy dark brown with thin lacy off-white head. Aroma is milk chocolate, light espresso, and some dark roasty malt on the back. Taste is huge creamy milk chocolate, sharply bitter hops, dark espresso, dark roasty chocolate malt on the finish. They did nail the milky latte flavor here, although with all the chocolate it is more of a mocha. Not too sweet which is impressive. Between the milk and the chocolate, this beer is not too complex but it nails those flavors well.
4.0 12oz bottle picked up at BevMo Pours clear dark brown with a small tan head, some lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee and chocolate. Taste is roasted dark coffee, ashy, milk chocolate with a nice bitterness in the finish Very good Coffee Stout.
4.0 Bottle. Pours dark brown with pillowy, fine tan head. Good retention and lots of lacing. Aroma is heavily roasted malt, nutty, caramel, sweet coffee, lightly burnt, and dark chocolate. Flavor is roasted malt, lightly burnt, dark chocolate, with a heavily roasted, lightly bitter, black coffee and dark chocolate finish. Good balance of lactose sweetness and coffee bitterness. Fairly one-dimensional but quite rich and tasty. Soft carbonation, medium body, and very smooth texture.
4.4 Last beer from the Beer Camp 12 pack. Deep brown almost black with a beautiful finely textured dark tan head. Coffee, chocolate, and roasted wood notes and the aroma. Milk and dark chocolate flavors along with a nice bittter yet rounded coffee flavor. Creamy texture with a milky component but not thick like a milk shake. Excellent roasted coffee and charred wood notes come out of this and the bitterness balances the creaminess perfectly. There is a decent alcohol warmness to this but it does not intrude on the creamy chocolate flavor but rather balances it perfectly. This walks the fine line between a very drinkable Porter and a chocolaty dessert beer. It can be either one equally well and transcends both types. I’m actually enjoying this with a chocolate truffle from Schubert’s also from Chico CA which is a great combination. I?m glad I saved this one for last because it typifies the excellence of the beers in the Beer Camp series. Goodbye Beer Camp, you were awesome and I hope we?ll see you again someday.
4.5 Growler. Pours a rich, warm coffee brown with a fairly thick tan head. Quality coffee dominates the aroma while roast malt and subtle chocolate and licorice notes peep through. Sublime flavor has rich quality coffee, chocolate, roast malt, caramel, and subtle licorice tones. Very lip-smacking! Firm texture is fairly fizzy and leaves a nice quality mocha finish. Now that’s my kind of double latte!
3.3 Dark pour and heavy/thick lacing. Chocolate, coffee, burnt bread on the nose. Taste of coffee, milk chocolate, cream, and a touch of black pepper. I would like a little more body and cream. The flavors are a little lacking for a "double latte"
3.6 On tap at Sideways in Fayetteville. Pours a rich dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma is chocolate and roast with a good dose of coffee. Lots of coffee on the flavor, but this beer is too sweet. Overall good, but not great.
4.0 This meets its expectation as the best beer in the recent beer camp. Nicely balanced big flavour. Creamy thick mouthfeel.
3.9 Bottle to beer stein. Great dark pour. Aroma is coffee and roast and sweetness. Taste is sweet coffee and milk. Awesome!
4.0 Dark espresso brown body topped by tan head and great lace. Roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate and sweet milk notes. Delicious.
