Sierra Nevada / Saint Arnold Beer Camp Dry-Hopped Berliner-Style Weisse

Sierra Nevada / Saint Arnold Beer Camp Dry-Hopped Berliner-Style Weisse

We wanted to make a beer that was a bit outside of both breweries normal wheelhouses, so together we chose to create a twist on the classic, tart, Berliner Weisse. Were playing off the slightly sour twang of the base beer by adding heaps of dry-hopped flavor to complement the tartness with citrusy and fruit-forward hop notes. The primary yeast strain is Sierra Nevadas famous Kellerweis wheat beer yeast, which imparts notes of banana and clove, blending seamlessly with the hops to create a dry, white-wine-like flavor that is as crisp and refreshing as anything weve tried.

3.3 Lime and lots of bread yeast. Done well for style and not overly spur but still not hugely pleasant like massages. Pours golden with decent head and lacing. Tangy finish. Bottle from mixed pack.
3.7 Bottle in CO. Cheers to the Duke. Pours clear gold with a frothy, white head. Really good bal, nice citric bite, lemon and tart tangerine, melon. Light to medium bodied with massaging carbonation. Tart and citric finish, fairly acidic. Very good.

3.6 Sample during the "Collaboration Beers On Deck 2!" event on 08/13/2017. Hazy yellow color with a thin white head that dissipates quickly to a wispy film. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of tart citrus, yeast and malt. Light-bodied with a tart lemony character and flavors of herbal yeast and doughy malt. The finish is mildly sour with a citrus aftertaste. Decent overall.
2.5 Blind tasted with 2 other berliner weisses, beers were: 1. Boulevard Berliner Weisse 2. Sierra Nevada / Saint Arnold Beer Camp Dry-Hopped Berliner-Style Weisse 3. Samuel Adams Berliner Weisse. Rater 1 rated the beers 123, rater 2 (ME) rated the beers 123, rater 3 rated the beers 132. 355ml bottle. Light golden pour, Aroma is musty, refried bean, corn tortilla, fireworks. Flavor is tart and there is again an odd note. Post tasting thoughts: This had a destinct firework note, i don't know if it is stale mosaic hops or what but this is an odd one, and too old at this point.
3.8 Pale golden coloured body with a lot of haze and a smallish, but nice white head, only about a centimetre tall. Aroma of funky yeast, some brett and lactose notes and a good deal of dry bread and malt with some metal coming through as well. Light-bodied; Strong grassy and dry flavour at first with a dose of tart lemons, limes, salt and hay coming through that shows a hint of fruit near the end and a dose of grain as well. Aftertaste shows more of the dry characteristics than anything else with some mild sweetness and tart flavours, but hay, yeast, grass and a little basementy and yeastie funk is noticeable throughout. Overall, a very nice and slightly different Berliner Weisse with almost a Gose-like quality showing quite a bit of dryness, a little salt, but the tart and funky notes make this nice and complex. Overall, a nice beer, well worth trying or even seeing if you can find this single bottle from the pack, as it is worth searching for, especially if you like either Goses or Berliner Weisses, as this seems like a bridge between the two styles. I sampled this stubby twelve ounce bottle purchased from Whole Foods in Fair Lakes (Fairfax), Virginia on 12-August-2017 for US$25,99/twelve pack sampled at home in Washington on 13-September-2017.
3.3 Requisite sour aroma with some woody notes. Hazy light yellow with a small white head. Nice light sour bite that's not too over the top. Good light citrus/honey sweetness to balance. Lemon and light pineapple notes. Not much in the way of bitterness that I could detect. Finishes sour and lemony. Nice Berliner Weisse style beer.
3.8 Bottle from Hegedorn's. Hazy gold with lace. Nice fruity nose of hops, some pot, grasses, lemon, light tropiucl fruits. Very fruity hop flavor, tropical and citrus, grassy, grapefruit. Good tart balance with a crisp, light body.
3.4 Bottle from the Beer Camp mixed pack golden pour with a small head. Gentle grain. Mild wheat. Light citric funk. Flavor is clean. Fairly tart. Light bodied, easy drinking.
3.4 Bottle. It poured a clear yellow color with a white head. The aroma was of wheat, some sourness and citrus hops. The taste was similar to the aroma with more wheat, sourness, hops and bananas. It had a medium body with nice carbonation. Good stuff.
3.2 A steady pour produces a one-finger thick, pale, off-white colored head. The beer is a bright golden color that shows a brilliantly clear, soft yellow / golden hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of lemon zest, light herbal notes and a backdrop of lactic tartness. Nicely effervescent, a bit fizzy, and quite light bodied, this beer is clearly meant for quaffing. The lactic tartness is fairly light, it helps to accentuate a lemon-zest hop character, and a lightly herbal character that leans towards a light woody-herbal note and a touch of something not quite basil, or not quite lemon-thyme. A light, easy drinking beer that is not as interesting as I was hoping. It is certainly quite appropriate for mass consuming on a blazing hot, summer's day.
3.2 On tap at Vultures Lane. Pours straw. Lemon, straw, peach, little funk, bread. Decent, nice hopping but the underlying beer could be better.
2.7 Pours a pale gold with a flimsy sudsy head; aromas of horse blanket and lime; tart palate with a tart finish.
3.3 Part of the sampler pack. Slightly hazy yellow with moderate white head. Spicy esters follow through to slight fruit.
3.2 Pours a hazy golden yellow color with a nice medium sized off white head. The aroma is bubblegum, lemon, pepper. The flavor is similar to the aroma with some lemon tart in there. There is some grassy notes in there as well with some minimal hops.
3.4 Can sample at a tasting at troubles’ place. Thanks troubles. Cloudy blond. Fruity, lime and tarty aroma, tarty-sour-citrus taste. Dry mouthfeel, astringent, full body and tarty finish.
3.6 Poured from a 12 oz bottle. Aroma is acidic with some light citrus and yogurt notes. Medium grain notes with some moderate earthy and herbal hop notes. Light fruity notes. Pours a hazy, dull, golden straw color with a medium large, fairly thick and frothy, white head that recedes quickly to a thin film that lingers for a bit. No lacing or legs. Flavor is moderately acidic with a medium grain note and a faint of sweetness. Light bitterness with moderate hop notes, earthy and herbal with hints of citrus and tropical fruit. Light citrus and yogurt notes. Mouthfeel is light bodied with medium high carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a pretty nice Berliner. The hop profile has started to fade though and the base beer is a bit bland.
3.5 It pours light golden with a white head. Head retention is low. There are aromas of wheat and white wine. There is a low herbal element that blends in as well. The flavors feature a strong sour white wine flavor. There are moderate wheat flavors and hints of lemon. It has a dry finish with moderate tartness. Overall, it is a tart white wine like beer with some lemon and moderate wheat.
3.3 12oz bottle. Pours a fairly standard clear gold with a barely there white head - which dissipates to nothing almost immediately. Aroma is lightly tart; grape, floral hops, light passionfruit, some wheat, faint lemony citrus, light minerals, and a touch of biscuit. Taste is tart and acidic; white wine grapes, passionfruit, minerals, a little musk, and some light yeast in the finish. [Taste is more 6.5/10 than 7/10] Medium body. Moderate but slightly prickly carbonation. Crisp mouthfeel. Like a lot of Sierra Nevada beers, there is a faint metallic character lurking in the back of the beer. The Sierra Nevada character also dominates Saint Arnold, as a lot of their Beer Camp beers do with their respective collaborators.

3.6 Bottle. Tart lemony citrus aroma with notes of wheat malt, banana, clove and white wine. Pours cloudy pale golden colored with a thin white head that has some retention but little lacing. Starts with lemon citrus tartness with some banana and wheat malt flavors to with the lively mouthfeeel. Finishes dry and crisp with some clove spice and vinous white wine flavors with more tart lemon at the end that coats the palate. Pretty nice Berliner.
3.7 12 ounce bottle. Pale yellow gold color. Small creamy ghost white head. Tart, sulphury, chalky aroma. Intense, tangy, yeasty wheat malt flavor. Notes of lemon juice, apple cider vinegar and sourdough bread. Bitter dry hops in finish are subdued. Certainly unique. " Ich bin ein Berliner ".
