Sierra Nevada / Surly Beer Camp Ginger Lager

Sierra Nevada / Surly Beer Camp Ginger Lager

Together, we’re brewing a lager infused with hot ginger and a touch of cayenne (which emphasizes the ginger heat) before fermenting on a blend of oak honeycombs and hops. This may seem like an odd concept—and let’s be honest, it IS an odd concept—but the finished beer more than makes up for the seemingly strange combination of flavors. The ginger is bright and crisp, the cayenne falls just below the heat threshold, and the oak adds a delicate roundness to the finish. This ultra-crisp lager is very balanced and incredibly drinkable and will be one of the sleeper hits of the Beer Camp pack.

3.5 16 oz can from the mix pack. Clear gold pour with a smaller white head. Lots of ginger on the nose. Mild pepper heat on taste. This is pretty good, nice surprise from the pack.
3.3 Can. About 8C, colder still would have worked too. Hazy gold with a very loose white head. 3- Smells like ginger beer - nice fiery ginger, doesn't smell too sweet. Maybe some lime and pepper. Beer? Much beerier than it smells with quite smooth and fairly clean pale malt before the ginger and some pepper take more of a hold towards the end. I would have liked a little more carbonation. And a bit more bitterness. Certainly very much ginger focused but not bad at all. As so many of these American beers are, pretty spendy on the alcohol for what it is. 6373 14
3.5 0473l can@: pours almost brilliant golden with foamy dissipating foamy white head. Aroma: crisp, biscuity malt backbone, intense ingver, vanillin, cayenne peppers...flavor follows arima. Overall: a powerful gingerbread blow, supported by baking cayenne pepper. Medium bodied, smooth texture, moderate carbonation.
3.8 1 pint(16 ounce) can poured to tulip glass Sight: light amber, orange, big off white foam that quickly disappears, some lacing Smell: aroma of ginger on drinking, yeast aroma on the smell Taste: Spicy, medium bitterness Mouth feel: good carbonation, sticky, long spicy mildly hot aftertaste Overall: Very good beer
3.5 16oz can from the Beer Camp set. Pours hazy dark gold with a thin but persistent white cap and good lacing. Ginger comes out right away in the aroma. Flavors are Zesty ginger, lemon citrus, grassy hops, some pale ,alt to round out. Medium carbonation with a warming, spicy ginger finish. Tasty.
3.4 Pours clear yellow with a white head. Aroma of ginger, wood and lemon. Taste is light sweet and medium bitter.
3.5 Sample during the "Collaboration Beers On Deck 2!" event on 08/13/2017. Hazy golden color with a medium thin white head that burns away gradually to an outer ring. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of ginger, fruit and cayenne pepper. Medium body with flavors of spicy ginger, citrus and cayenne. The finish is peppery with a ginger aftertaste. Decent overall.
2.9 Refrigerated 16 oz. aluminum can poured into a cup. Clear golden with little white head. Aroma is ginger, medium body, low carbonation, and little laci g. Taste is ginger and some heat.
3.1 Can. Strong ginger, biscuit malt, and straw aroma with hint of cayenne. Golden yellow with moderate head. Lightly sweet ginger, biscuit malt, and mildly bitter herbal hay flavor. Okay body - light cayenne pepper burn in the finish.
3.3 Pours a pretty gold with a big white frothy head; ginger and spice on the nose; off dry palate with a ginger induced burn on the way down. I like it.
3.8 Can from the box set. Pretty deep golden color, hazy. Nose is ginger, nice biscuit malts, lager quality clear. Balanced ginger flavor is pronounced but not overwhelming, lager character is pleasant, peppery finish burns along with the ginger. Great lager base. Works well. Enjoyable.
3.5 Can from Maruho. A Surly collaboration in cans. This lager gives big ginger and mild lime notes up front wafting from the deep yellow gold topped with a thick white head. Medium bodied you get hit by the cayenne pepper with the first sip then you get the ginger and lime, nothing from the malts or oak. I'd say it is better than many other ginger beers I've tried.
2.9 Hazy deep dark yellow, average head quickly disappeared. Brewers description of "hot ginger and a touch of cayenne (which emphasizes the ginger heat) " nearly chased me away because I'm not a fan of Jamaican style ginger beer which carries quite a bit of heat. However, this brew has more subtle ginger and heat notes, merely emphasizing the quality of the IPA that's behind it. I do enjoy hot stuff and if I rated the heat on a 1 to 10 scale, I'd give it only a '2'. Low heat, mild IPA bitterness, candied ginger, plenty of flavor left behind on the wash. 16oz can from 12 pack Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Across America Variety Pack $24.99 at Total Wine and More, Boca Raton, Florida
3.4 A steady pour produces a two-finger thick, pale tan colored head. The beer is a golden color with a hint of copper to it, and shows a brilliantly clear, yellow golden hue when held up to the light. The aroma smells of bright ginger, floral, candied, spicy and inviting, but not overwhelming, though clearly the dominant note here. Clean malt character up front yields to spicy ginger flavors that bloom on the palate as the beer flows across the tongue. The finish is bitter and spicy from the ginger character and this reminds me of a dry ginger-ale soda. If you like gingerale then you will likely enjoy this beer; simplistic in its focus, but it is well done.
3.4 Can from the Beer Camp mixed pack. Golden pour with a huge head. Plenty of ginger on the nose. Earthy spice. Gentle cereal. Drinks very clean. Pleasingly dry finish. Spicy ginger. Light pepper. Medium body, assertive carb.
3.2 Bottle shared by Jack, thanks! Pours a clear orange gold with a white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of straw and earthy grains with ginger supporting. Flavor is grain and straw forward with a good amount of ginger backing.
3.9 Bright, clear light golden color with a fluffy white head. Aromas of pale malt, grass, ginger, and hint of heat. Initial light malt sweetness is slowly overcome by the ginger and the heat at the back of the tongue. Nice in the ginger is there and mingles rather than overpowering (a trick many have not mastered). Mild spicy finish which begs for another swig.
3.7 16 ounce can. Medium gold with a large rocky white head. Ginger dominates the nose. Flavor is ginger, lemon and subtle heat. A bit like a cough drop. A hint of zesty fruit and earthy, herbal hops. More heat, presumably from the cayenne, comes through in finish. Certainly is unique. Crisp dry aftertaste.
3.5 Draft at Khyber Pass. Hazy gold pour. Slight fizzy foam. Syrupy honey malts with a big ginger bite. Additional notes of mango, hot peppers, cardamon, and orange peel. Faint vanilla. Lingering spicy finish. Crisp and refreshing.
3.8 From can. Pours golden. Big ginger hit and nice afterburn. Makes for a creative take on an otherwise standard lager. A worthwhile collaborative effort.
3.5 Poured from a 16 oz can. Aroma is moderately ginger forward with a light spiciness to it. Medium light grain notes and hints of floral esters. Pours a somewhat clear, golden color with a medium sized, thick, pillowy, white head that recedes steadily to the edges where a small film lingers. Light lacing and small legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with a bit more sweetness towards the finish and a medium light grain note. Moderately strong ginger and pepper notes with a bit of a spiciness. Hints of oak and floral esters. Mouthfeel is medium light bodied and crisp with moderate carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, an odd beer. I like the spice notes in the beer, but the ginger is a bit overpowering.
3.1 Can sample at a tasting at troubles’ place. Thanks troubles. Clear gold with a white head. Lots of ginger and lemon and some pineapple syrup in the nose. Lots of ginger, some malt and faint bitterness in the mouth. Fizzy, medium body, slightly hoppy finish.
3.7 On tap at Beervana. Pours gold. Ginger, fiery ginger, lemon, little perfumed. Really pleasant.
3.7 Poured from a 16 OZ can into a pint glass. The appearance is a clear golden amber color with a medium sized head. The aroma is spicy ginger. The taste is ginger with some cayenne pepper. A very mild flavored beer.
3.2 can. pale golden with one finger head. ginger forward, over a fairly light lagery body. the hot pepper is subtle, but cumulative. interesting, but i’m not crazy about it.
3.9 16 oz can poured a clear gold with a small lasting off white head. Aromas of straw, ginger, light fruitiness and a hint of cayenne. Palate was light bodied and crisp with a dry warming finish. Flavors of straw, ginger, cayenne, light vanilla and light fruitiness with a crisp dry warming lingering ginger finish.
3.2 16oz can from the Beer Camp pack. Mostly ginger-y. Light cayenne in the back of the throat. Decent change from a traditional lager, although the ginger is too much by the end. 12.6
3.5 Aroma: ginger, citrus and malt. Taste: sweet malty background with lemon. Strong and spicy ginger aftertaste. Long lasting and warming. Great brew for ginger beer fans
3.3 Pours a clear gold, elusive, effervescent head. Nose of ginger, grain and spice. Love the lemon pepper on the tongue, not overdone with the ginger. Not spectacular but very pleasant.
3.0 It pours golden and is fairly clear. It has a large off white pillow head. Head retention is moderate. The aroma is controlled by the ginger with the cayenne in the background. There are low oak elements in the aroma. The flavors are upfront with the ginger and cayenne which puts a bit a heat on the palate. There are some woody undertones. It has a moderate body towards the light side with a somewhat spicy, hot finish on the palate. Overall, this beer is decent, but the ginger and cayenne masks most of the other flavors in the beer.
