Sierra Nevada / Three Floyds Beer Camp Chico King

Sierra Nevada / Three Floyds Beer Camp Chico King

2014 Beer Camp Across America Release.

3 Floyds has a reputation as the Midwestern kings of alpha (hops), and it seems that one of our beers helped to lure them down the lupulin-paved path. Chico King is a mash-up of our mutual passion for hoppy pale ales and combines a uniquely robust malt body with intense citrusy and fruity new school hop varietals.

3 Floyds marches to the beat of their own (double kick) drum when it comes to collaboration, often partnering with comic book artists, tattoo parlors or heavy metal bands when inspiration strikes. These eclectic beers are coveted throughout the Midwest and some beers, like the legendary Dark Lord Imperial Stout, have spawned something akin to a beer-themed holiday in the brewery’s hometown of Munster, IN.

3.7 Tasted from bottle. Pours a hazy dark amber withe beige head. Aroma is earthy and herbal notes, caramel and a little citrus. Taste is a some grapefruit, orange peel, floral, caramel, toffee, grass. Very well balanced. Moderate bitterness with moderate sweet malt backbone. Medium bodied. Overall a very good pale ale.
4.1 One of the milder beers I’ve ever had from 3 floyds and for that reason, I appreciated it. Floral aroma, amber appearance, with a nice thick sweet finish. One of three I managed to try at Blind Tiger in 2014.
3.2 B 355 ml Aroma: funky and a bit chaotic blend of hops. Citrusy with lemon grass touch, slight herbal side with sweet bottom. Look: poured nice white cap. Textbook like lace. Clear amber base. Palate/Body/Taste: medium bodied with softer touch to it. Lighter carbonation. Slight nutty hints with crystal malts. Decent.
3.5 12 ounce bottle from Hayduke that we had together via facebook chat. This beer has a big creamy off white head that leaves thick sticky lacing. It has a lot of carbonation and is amber in color. Aroma is not huge but is nice. I got peaches and tangerines with yeast. The flavor also begins with that fruit and yeast. Very mild bitterness. Malts are pale and are big here. An interesting beer and one that I kept hoping would go to the next level.
3.7 Shared with Strykzone on Facebook Chat. Pours clear copper with an off-white head that lasts a long time and leaves excellent lacing. Nose is citrus. Some fruit. Strykzone suggests peach and tangerine. I sense Thompson’s Seedless grapes. Mixture of aromas.. Medium body Smooth mouth feel. Flavor starts with tasty malts and displays a lot of flavor with the hops playing second fiddle. There is a light bitter finish. The fruit kind of dominates here and I do not know if it comes from the malts or the hops. Guessing hops. But no matter what this is a tasty beer and quite enjoyable.
3.4 December 19, 2014. Bottle at home. Light hazy amber with a thick one-inch off.white head. Aroma is chocolate pudding, grass, pine and citrus. Taste is light to medium sweet with milky chocolate pudding notes with light to medium bitter grassy notes. Finish is soft bitter. Light to medium bodied, average carbonation. A bit surprised by the chocolate pudding notes but still good.
3.4 Bottle shared by Brian. Chico King 6.5% a nice orange-copper pour with a foamy white head. Mild hoppy bitterness, a bit dank + fruity/floral. A clean bitterness but fairly one dimensional.
3.5 Crisp copper and light amber coloured body with a nice, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of bright grassy and herbal hops with a pungent and present earthy malt showing a lot of caramel. Medium-bodied; Strong hop flavours at first with a definite pine and grassy flavour showing some good malt and a subdued sweetness of caramel at the end. Aftertaste shows a mellow malt with a complex hoppy flavour of grass, pine and flowers. Overall, a nice beer with a rich malt backbone and some good hops - but nothing overwhelmingly nice or great to sample - I’m sure a lot of these ratings are purely reputation alone. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle pulled from the sampler twelve pack, purchased at Harris Teeter in Arlington (Pentagon Row) on 30-July-2014 for US$22/12 pack, sampled at home in celebration of running a marathon in Maryland on 29-November-2014.
3.4 Pours a clear golden amber cikor. Aroma is of malts, hops, a little citrus and some grassy notes. Heavier palate with a slick feel. Flavor is of hops, malts, bark, a little sweetness and some harves. Good stuff.
3.3 Bottle thanks to sonnycheeba. Pours an amber with a layer of off white head. Aroma and taste of malts, hops, and some pine.
2.4 Large, light brown head with excellent lacing. Aromas of straw malt, with an earthly / musty clove. Average flavor. Not very exciting.
3.4 Draft from growler pours amber with a off white head. Aroma of caramel, grain, pine , citrus and floral. Taste is malts and citrus.
3.4 Bottle. Pours clear burnt orange with fine cream colored head, settles quickly Aroma is citrus, piney, mildly resinous, with a mild biscuit, grain background. Flavor is citrus, bitter, mildly piney and resinous, with a bitter, mildly fruity finish. More malt character as it warms, wish I had tasted it sooner. Soft carbonation, medium body, smooth texture.
3.4 Une base maltée fruitée et collante qui supporte les intempéries florales des houblons. Je la sens un peu défraîchie et poussiéreuse mais encore vigoureuse.
3.2 Bottle to ipa glass. The pour is mildly clear Amber with a big off white head. The aroma is piney and vaguely citrusy with a good deal of malt sweetness backing it up. The taste is very citrusy and juicy with a nice hop kick. There's a good malt balance as well. The finish is similar to apple juice. Less aggressive than I was expecting given the Three Floyds input but really nice overall.
3.7 Bottle - good size foamy head, nice medium copper color, good shot of citrus hop aroma and flavor, well balanced by biscuity malts - very good overall
3.6 Pours a finger of head on a clear dark straw colored body. The aroma has a pine smell with lots of caramel malt. Great depth. The taste has great pine and lemon bitterness beginning to end with some malt sweetness in the middle to break it up nicely. The texture is crisp. Nice and enjoyable.
3.3 Type: 12-oz.bottle Glass: Stone Ruination IPA pint glass From: Albertsons in Alpine, Calif. Price: $25.99 for the variety Beer Camp Across America 12-pack Purchased: Oct. 17, 2014 Consumed: Oct. 27, 2014 Misc.: Collaboration with 3 Floyds Brewing Company; Packaged May 15, 2014 at 6:54 p.m. Poured a caramel, amber clear color with three fingers of khaki white rocky head. A good deal of bubbles coming up from the bottom of the glass, reminding me slightly of a snow globe. Below average, sporadic foamy lacing along the sides of the glass. Thick, foamy retention on the top all the way down. (Sight - 4.13) Smelled caramel, toffee, slightly roasty malts, purple grape, plum, dark peach and apricot, rye hops, light mango and passion fruit, Citra hops, light menthol, honey and candied floral hops. (Smell - 3.63) Tasted similar to the nose with more bitterness. Got earthy rye hops, lemon sweetened iced tea, purple grape, plum, bitter roasted caramel, toffee, passion fruit, herbal hops and mango rind. (Taste - 3.63) Light body. Oily-to-creamy texture. Average-to-lively carbonation. Bitter, malty finish. (Feel - 3.63) Nothing too exceptional. I think I even overrated it a tad. (Overall - 3.63) 3.66 83 B
3.4 bottle. golden with one finger head. this is a solid pale ale, but given the makers of it, I was hoping for a bit more. just slightly aboverage.
3.5 Golden amber appearance with a thin white head. Aroma is slight floral hops. Flavor is sharp, slightly piney hops with a bit of toffee in the finish. Could use just a touch more body, finishes a little watery. Otherwise, fairly tasty. Wife: 3.7
3.4 I had hoped for a little more on this one, and was semi let down. It’s an OK beer, just not as good as I expected. Nothing really stand out. Some citrus and resinous notes on the nose. Earthy and citrusy notes for flavor with a Medium-High carbonation and semi dry finish.
3.6 Pours dark copper with a finger frothy head that laces glass. Smell hops, resin, citrus and roasted malt. Taste earthy malt, hops, grass and citrus. Complex. Heavy body, heavy carbonation.
3.9 Pours clear golden amber with a thick and persistent buff head. Hoppy aroma has a firm fruity underpinning. Flavor is quite hoppy, more woody than evergreen, with a sweet fruity underpinning. Texture is lively and rather firm. Budweiser shmudweiser - here is a better choice for "King of beers"!
3.4 Poured from bottle to glass. Golden copper hue with creamy off white head that dissipated to a thin ring. Aroma is caramel, bread, cereal, spice, grapefruit. Mouthfeel is nice with a medium body and crisp carbonation. Taste is dry sweetness followed by a spicy hop bitterness that extends through the finish. Overall this is a decent brew.
3.0 Poured a hazy orange yellow with a off head. It had a very subtle hop aroma with light malt notes. Very hoppy up front almost borderline ipa. It also had a bread malty taste. Finish with hot from the alcohol.
3.2 Bottle: Hazy orange with off white head. Aroma is very light fruit. Nice citrus and fruit hops as advertised almost IPA amounts, weird malt with burnt and biscuit flavors coming through.
3.6 Flavors exhibit the yeast and lite woody hops. Seems muttled and not very punchy however, that could be from the bottle date of 15 may. Almost 2 month old beer here....however i dont think this beer was very hoppy when it was fresh. i dunno but it just doesnt do much for me as a three floyds beer but for sierra nevada, its solid. very dry finish with toasted malt and lite woody hops.
3.9 Really good pale- wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I did. Pours a beautiful burnt copper color - deep and rich for a pale. Nose and taste is tons of caramel and dark-ish malts with nice tropical, citrus and earthy notes for balance. Some bitter notes at play, but not overly so. About right for the roast level of the malt. Bit of resin in there- somewhat slick in the mouth. Really enjoyable.
2.8 12 ounce bottle. Pours a cloudy brown with a one inch tan head that lasts. Taste is of roasted malt, hops, resin and caramel. Similar aroma. Has a medium body with a slight dry finish. Not bad.
3.7 Caramel in color. Toasty malt aroma with a hint of more caramel. Clean toasty malt flavor followed by... wait for it... more caramel. Finishes dry. Overall, I really get a ton of caramel notes. Its like drinking a beer that was fermented with real caramel... nice.
