Sierra Nevada Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale

Sierra Nevada Tumbler Autumn Brown Ale

Sierra Nevada uses malt within days of roasting at the peak of its flavor to give Tumbler a gracefully smooth malt character. Two-row pale, crystal 40, chocolate and smoked malts give it a malty complexity. Challenger hops in the boil add balancing bitterness, while more Challengers and some Goldings give just enough hop flavor in the finish to balance all that malt.

3.6 En mere tyk og fyldig brown ale end de fleste. Har en nøddeagtig eftersmag..
3.9 Pours a brown colour. Taste is malty with some yeast. Overall quite a nice beer
3.7 It pours brown with a full tan head that does produce some lacing. There are aromas of nuts, roast, a slight bit of smoke, and slight fruit. It has flavors that feature a bit of smoke, nuts, roast, and a bit of plum. It has a fairly light body with a somewhat smooth finish. Overall, a nutty, smoky brew that is complimented by the roast and plums.
3.7 A delicious brown ale from Sierra Nevada's Fall sampler box, now I want to find a six pack of this before the season is over! Pours a rich mohagony brown, clear but dense, with a full white foamy head that maintains itself through the pint. Aroma is roasty caramel malt, with a bit of fresh earthy hoppiness, well balanced. Flavor is a wide range of malty notes, ranging from caramel to dry chocolate to mild toasty smokiness, apparently from a touch of smoked malt in the brew. Earthy hops in the finish. Overall quite enjoyable!
3.6 Pours a rich black with an off-white head from a bottle. Aroma of rich malts, mostly chocolate, with some faint cola. Flavor similar, rich and malty but not overly sweet, well-balanced. Pretty good beer.
3.2 Sehr dunkles rotbraun, leicht hellbrauner Schaum, malzig süßlich in der Nase, knackig im antrunk, Relativ bitter, leichte röstnoten im Abgang, leicht süßlich, schwierig zu beschreiben
3.0 I bought the fall sample pack from Sierra Nevada, and this was the best beer they had. The aroma was of malt and bread. The taste was about the same but with a bit of a char or burnt aftertaste. Not a bad beer, but wasn’t one i will go running back to.
3.0 Bottle. Thick, tan head. Bready malt and caramel flavors. Some roasted malt in the finish.
3.1 12 oz. bottle at wife’s work party. Poured dark brown, tan foamy head. Aroma was roasted malts, toast, nutty. Taste was mild bittersweet, nutty, roasted malt.
4.4 2015 BJCP Category: 19C American Brown Ale AROMA: Malty-rich aroma with notes of caramel, toffee, and some toasted bread. Slight earthy hops. No esters. 11/12 APPEARANCE: A chestnut/mahogany shade of brown. Clear. Large tan froth laces and retains well. 3/3 FLAVOR: Moderately-high malt palette with caramel/toffee flavors up front and a dark chocolate on the second half. Sweet, but not cloying. Transitions to a fairly strong bitterness that lingers. Hops are spicy/earthy but do not upstage the malts. Faint smoke character. Well-balanced. 18/20 MOUTHFEEL: Medium+ body with medium-low carbonation. Soft, smooth texture. A medium-dry aftertaste of both malts and hops. No alcohol presence. 5/5 OVERALL IMPRESSION: Definitely a California-style brown ale with plenty of hops, but still well-balanced. The use of smoked malt (though probably a trivial amount) is not to style, though. Otherwise it’d be perfect. 9/10 TOTAL SCORE: 44/50 NOTE: I am a rank-pending BJCP judge. I am reviewing commercial beer to BJCP specs to hone my judging skills.
3.0 12 ounce bottle, drunk straight from the bottle. Some sugar in the initial taste. A bit of burnt candy in the finish. Not great
3.6 Brown sugar aroma with a maple favored malt with a bit of caramel finish has a slight hop tinge.
3.6 12 oz. bottle, part of a mixed 12 pack, picked up on sale at a local grocery store. That’s one of the things I like about Sierra Nevada, it’s always decent beer and you can always find it on sale. Anyway, beer pours a clear cola brown with some red highlights and a one finger fluffy beige head. Toffee, caramel aroma. Flavor is sweet. Malt forward with a full, smooth body. Easy drinking.
3.5 Brown pour with a beige head. Malty aroma, nutty roasted malt flavor with low hop bitterness.
3.7 Bottle from LaBodega, clear brown beer, nice cream colored head. Aroma malt, coffee, fresh bread. Taste is malt, coffee, roasted barley. Super clean, palate is not heavy, carbonation moderate. Classic brown ale.
3.2 Brown to umber in color. Taller tan head. Pale to toasted malt with a toasted marshmallow background. Lightly sweet start Simple toasted malt along with a growing bitterness. A touch nutty. I don’t get much depth out off this one. A decent brown ale, but not much more. Interesting that of the two brown ales tonight, I enjoyed the Brass Ass much more, my expectations were tilted the other way. 4/10
3.4 Pours a nice dark brown color. Aromas of chocolate/mild tobacco/coffee. Slightly bitter with hints of nuts/chocolate and maybe a touch of smoke. Excellent beer.
3.1 (bottle) clear, bright reddish amber colour with a small beige head; aroma of grain, cake; balanced, subdued flavour with a long, light bitter finish
3.9 Brown pour, head leaves a nice lace. Smells liek some rank hops and a bit of chocolate. Flavour is nice and palate is medium and super smooth. Mild and flavourful at the same time, toasty, well balanced, thirst quenching. Great beer, awesome example of brown ale.
2.2 A subdued aroma of malt, pours a clear brown color, a dry feel with a taste of malt and a chalky malt finish.
3.1 Dark brown color, thin lace. Rich malt flavor, light flavor, with subtle backend. Ok, but not too exciting.
3.6 Draft. Faint coffee grounds aroma. Flavors of rich roasted cocoa, some vegetable stock and more chocolate on the finish. Wonderful!
3.0 355 ml bottle, in Nevada City. Reddish brown colour, off-white head. Malty and nutty aroma and flavour, with notes of burnt caramel. Moderate hops in the finish. I’m sorry, but brown ales like this one rarely make me ecstatic. This one is no exception, even though it is made by the capable brewers of Sierra Nevada. Nothing wrong with it, just not my favourite style.
3.5 Poured from a bottle. Delicious choice! Small head and little lacing, but creamy texture nonetheless. Terrific clear amber color. Nutty and sweet, interesting.
4.6 After a string of downright boring Brown Ales, Tumbler gave me just the kind of upper I needed to keeping seeking out the style. And this truly is a beautiful representation of the Brown Ale’s potential. With elements of chocolate, smoke, nuts, toasted barley, subtle coffee, and some citrusy, mildly bitter hops, Tumbler is far from the watered-down levels that Brown Ales sometimes succumb to. This is a fall classic that’ll stick around for years to come.
3.5 Deep dark brown. Thin beige head. Cocoa. Nutty. Toasty. Dry. Light roast. Good drinkability. Solid.
3.4 Pours hazy dark chestnut brown with a fat and foamy tan head. Aroma is bready malt with a touch of toast and yeast. Taste is roasted malts, a bit of cocoa and some mild backing bitterness that lasts into the aftertaste. A bit smoky. A nice brown ale with a touch of sourness.
3.4 Pours clear but dark brown with chestnut highlights, a rocky off white head and good lacing. Aroma of dark bread and cola with light floral smell. Taste has a bit of malt sweetness, toasted and roasted malt character, a bit of graininess, some herbal and citrus notes and mild bitterness. Finishes dry with mild bitterness. Light/medium body with moderate carbonation. Clean and well made.
3.2 Burly aroma of caramel and roasted malts are noticeable immediately. Pours a dark brown mahogany body with half inch of tan head. Bold flavors of molasses, charred wood, and nutty malts. Mild bitters through the finish. Nice medium bodied beer for the fall season.
3.8 DATE TASTED: October 3, 2015 ... GLASSWARE: Hop Devil nonick... OCCASION: a whole day in due to a cold rain--it calls for a brown ale... APPEARANCE: frothy, thick, two-finger off-white head that clings to the glass, producing attractive cloud-like lacing; body is dark amber and autumnal in color... AROMA: robust toasted malts mingle with soft cocoa to invite the first sip; definite caramel in strength; butter, lactic hints are present as well; some odd yeastiness... PALATE: lively and expressive--for a brown, audacious--and medium-bodied, making the beer sippable but significant; flavorful, lingering aftertaste... TASTE: surprisingly chocolaty at the start; smoky malts and earthy peat build a sweet, robust profile; the label suggests hops, but a blanketing maltiness allows only a faint window of that trademark West Coast spruce and citrus... OVERALL: as I remembered it from last year--formidable on its own, suitable pairing for the autumn weather --and a great part of the fall mix pack (though no Oktoberfest is disputable)... as browns go, demanding of attention and distinguished in it chocolate character...
