4.3 750ml batch 74 bottle 592. Pours medium dark with little to no head. Amazing aroma of burnt sugars and some coffee/mocha. Pallet was spot on hints of citrus up front, smooth with chocolate roast through the mid and finishes creamy. Not bad considering its an 05, the body level has managed to stay mid to full. I’ll see where the other two bottles I have take me someday.
3.9 Oxidized dark malts on the nose. Soy, some dark smoke/burt notes. Dark chocolate cakey notes. Black pour tan head turns into a ring. Dark as fuck. Nice sweet roasty and smokey flavors. Dry and sweet but not full of over the top residual sugars, Oxidized, but flavorful. Mellowed to an awesomness. Really solid sweet/dry. Good shit.
4.1 thanks riversideak! clearing out the wales! creamy chocolate oatmeal nose, dense. black, sticky tan head. dry dark chocolate body, little dark fruit, growing in intensity and complexity. slick and sticky.
3.3 Thanks to Alex for pulling this bottle out at Mike’s bachelor-party tasting. Served in a Savor snifter. Pours dark brown with a fairly-massive mocha-colored head and a nice bit of light lacing as it goes down. The nose brings some chocolate and roast, bordering on Whoppers candy. Behind that, I got a bit of light cherry-skin character and red and black licorice. Also, a bit of light brown-paper character toward the end. The flavor brings a lot of malted chocolate as well as a faint roast character. The mouthfeel helps this one along--medium body that brings forward a creamy and smooth brew. The finish is somewhat dry and is definitely lacking in booziness. I seemed to be in the minority not really digging this one, but it had a lot of interesting components and was something I had wanted to try for quite awhile now. 3.6 Thanks to Alex for sharing one of his rare whale bif beers. Unlabled poured into a snifter...Light black pour with, a nice tan head pops up but it fades to fast to a half finger cap, light lacing...A light aroma that displays a slight sourness, is this a little infected? Lots of malt chocolate, cocoa, a little brine character...The taste is really roasty, surprised, where’d that come from? Bitter chocolate, caramel, a slight metallic finish...This is by no means bad, a couple faults to me, but I’d drink it again. I probably liked it the least of the group, but what do I know.
3.6 Sampled from the tap at EBF. Poured near black with a brown head that dissipated to the edges and remained there. Aroma was full of creamy chocolate, roasted malts and a bit of a nutty note as well as coffee. Flavor had a chocolate note with a growing nuttiness and some roasted malts. Nice and creamy on tongue.
4.3 A beer that begs to be remade, on tap at Extreme Beer Fest. Fudgy, fruity, roasty. Nose is good, taste is better, really wish I’d have gone back to the table for more. Roasty, chocolatey, very good and by-the-book.
4.0 This poured a black color with a beige head. The aroma contains some chocolate, coffee, and a hint of charcoal. The flavor is rather sweet with some chocolate, coffee, and cocoa powder. Some alcohol in the finish. Overall this was a bit on the extreme side but good. Happy trails my friend!
3.2 8/26/2008. 22oz bottle, Batch #74, bottle #79. Black body with a small tan head. Aroma of lots of roasted malts, light baker’s chocolate, old hops and wet paper. Flavor is chocolate and roasted malts again up front with some mint and alcohol notes, some light garbage juice. Bitterness peaked at a 3, way too oxidized. Moderate carbonation with a medium full body. Just a little bit better than OK.
4.0 Bomber, RBWG March 2010. Probably 4-5+ years old at this point I would guess. The much anticipated pour gives a dark, cloudy, fudgy looking chocolate brown to mahogany colored body. Just a small, swirly, khaki tinted film sits at the crown. Limited, splotchy lacing dots the glass. The consistency looks fairly dense. The composition of the nose is completely unexpected and totally unique, in a good way. Very fruity overall, notes of deep, rich caramel, fig jam, and candied walnuts receive a dash of chocolate covered raspberries and cake icing. Wow, that is some aroma! Flavors follow suit, again quite chocolaty and fruity, giving notes of dense, macerated raspberry compote, hinting also at dates and nuts, all wrapped in a dense shroud of roasted caramel and a little cocoa. Mmmmm...tasty stuff! Dense and creamy, the palate is appropriately light to moderate in carbonation, with a mouth coating consistency that is neither too sugary or too hot. Great brew. This bottle was excellently preserved. I’d love to have had the opportunity to try this stuff in a more youthful state, because it’s still tasty as hell after all this time.
3.5 Have been lucky to have this beer 4-5 times, and twice in the last 6 months. I remember when it came out when I was in college and it just sat in the case we kept the special beers in ’cause nobody wanted to buy a $20 bomber of beer. That was 2005. So the times have changed a little, but I probably still wouldn’t buy this one. If it was aged in a french oak barrel with brett added, maybe. :) When fresh, this was a big imperial stourt, with strong chocolate and roasted malts, complemented by a nice hoppy fruitiness. Today, it has oxidized a ton, and thinned out, but still has some nice roasted malt and cocoa notes, though a bit more subdued. Always loved the bottle.
3.5 Thanks Sean Hill. Pours dark with some light. Head is one finger thick and tan. Nose is light and fruity, oxidized. Flavor shows lots age, some chocolate, sweet, oxidized.
3.8 Black in appearance with a nice brown head. Very hoppy aroma with lots of chocolate--mmmm. Full and creamy palate is very impressive. Very hoppy flavor with lots of chocolate and roasted malt tastes. This is like an incredible black and tan!
3.7 A: The pour is nearly black with a minimal tan head. S: An interesting nose, one that I’m not completely sold on. A certain sharpness to it, seemingly alcoholic, that sort of "ruins" the nice coffee and roasted aromas. T: Luckily, redemption occurs in the flavor portion of the beer. A very nice chocolate aspect that goes just great with the heavy roast that this beer features. As the glass warms up a bit, a mild dark fruit character comes through. M: Medium to full bodied with a smooth, low carbonation. D: Really a nice beer, and one that I’ve been wanting to try for a long time. I was a bit disappointed by the nose, but everything else is quite up to snuff.
4.1 Ratebeer Winter Gathering. A: Pours nice dark brown with an averaged sized tan head. Lite retention with some lace noted. S: Aromas of roasty malts, dark fruit, and chocolate. T: Nice and malty. Bitter chocolate and rich sweet dark fruits stand out. Mild anise type notes with hints of coffee, and green hops. M: On the fuller side of medium, rich, sweet with a touch of booze.
3.7 Bottle 74 of 244. Huge creamy head over a dense black body. Complex malt aroma and flavor.
4.1 bottle pours pitch black, medium tan head. Aroma is sweet soy and roasted barley. Flavor is straight marshmallow. Very roasty, sweet chocolate and a nice mellow sweet finish.
4.0 Bottle thanks to Springlicker. Black brown pour with tan head and lace. Roasted malt and chocolate dominate the nose. A good malt bitter. Full bodied with smooth carbonation.
3.8 Sampled at tasting at stevo’s, bottle 74/244. Pours very black with large, still tan head. The aroma is cocoa, soy sauce, and slight raisin. The flavor is hot cocoa, raisin, some vanilla, and a little bit of cherry cordial. There’s a slight tannic acid in the finish. Not bad.
4.0 decaturstevo’s stevofest part 2. Sample from a bottle thanks to SpringsLicker. 74/244. Basically black, light tan head. Aroma is light sherry, chocolate. Taste is cocoa, chocolate, light berry fruitiness.
3.8 Bottle thanks to Springslicker at stevofest. Looks like a typical Impy stout, black with a dense brown head. Nice winey, oaky aroma on top of the expected coffee and chocolate. The flavor has nice rich chocolate and coffee, and then a little blueberry or something like that. Definitely a sweeter interpretation of the style.
3.5 Sampled at RBWG 2010. Spicy old ale aroma. The flavor is surprisingly bitter with lots going on.
4.2 Thanks to SpringsLicker for this!! Deep, dark brown pour with a thin beige head. Looks ’classic’ in the glass ... very nice. Nose swirls with complex malts; showing a bit of cocoa, molasses, and caramel. The hops have mellowed beautifully to produce a gorgeously amalgamated earthy quality that I find wonderfully interesting. The mouthfeel is mildly viscous, and the ample, soft carbonation carries these flavors with great effect. I think many would say this is past its prime at this point; but I would disagree, and say that superb craftsmanship has resulted in an amazingly well balanced beauty. Not a brash beauty; but one of unique subtlety, nuance, and exquisite balance. I have given an extra point for the bottle/label design (yes, I think these things sometimes matter). If a beer is good ... it is good ... regardless of what it ’looks’ like; but I cannot help but take notice and give appreciation for a classy or unique design when I see one. The bottle has definitely made its way into my collection. This was really wonderful, and I am truly grateful for the opportunity. Thanks so much, Jay.
3.5 06 RBWG@RLRL-thanks to Fata2683/Keith-22oz bottle– pours a light brown head and black color. Aroma is sweet dark malt, some pine hops. Taste is sweet dark malt, some pine hops, some oxidation.
3.6 RBWG’10 pours dark brown, tan head. aroma is fruity, malty with notable dark fruits. flavor, med-high carb, found this ne to have lost of lot of the Imp aspect. Some bitter chocolate, light caramel finish, keep a tart like dark berry finish.
3.8 Can’t remember who shared this at Pre-Sex but you’re a rocker. Surprisingly fizzy pour, with a good amount of sediment cruising around and a thick prickly foamberg. A lot of the darker notes seem to have faded here. Some chocolate and certainly some sharp hops (improbably) remain. But there was an overwhelming cola quality to the stout which, while it wasn’t unenjoyable, seemed to take this one below the top rank just a bit.
3.6 Bottle shared by some nice dude at Sexual Chocolate release. Pours dark brown, almost black, with thinnish beige head. Nose showing a good bit of oxidation by now, but there was nice vanilla, chocolate, and some roast underneath. Definitely past its prime.
4.5 Rating #1000!!!!! First I have to thank everyone that helped me get here. Thanks to the great guys in the DC crew who bring top notch beers to every tasting. Thanks to the amazingly generous traders out there who helped me get my hands on my own world class beers. Thanks to all of the great beer spots in Washington DC that make DC a great place for a beer lover to live. I bought this bottle back in October 2005 from Shoreline Beverage in Huntington NY. It was the first time I ever paid $20 for a single bottle of beer. Had I known what this would taste like in 2010 I would have bought a case. I took this beer out of my cellar at halftime of the 2008 Superbowl when my team, the New England Patriots, had a slim lead. I put this beer back in my cellar an hour or so later after the Plaxico Burress touchdown. I decided that the right time to drink this would be nearly two years to the day later at the 2010 Sexual Chocolate release. I was thankful to share this with a great crew of friends who came to the release with me as well as a few other Ratebeerians present. The 22oz bottle pours a opaque, oily, viscous black with a creamy, clumpy tan head. Aroma is dark bread, grains, brown sugar, lightly toast, light coffee. The nose is extremely approachable. Flavor is really nice and easy: chocolate, nuts, grains, booze, raisins, oatmeal, sweet, cookie dough. The finish is super smooth with a lasting sweetness. Totally drinkable. Despite a hint of oxidation on the end, this has aged extremely well. It’s almost a textbook example of how good beer can come together with some age. I definitely thing this is peaking now. Kudos to Sixpoint for crafting such an excellent, approachable imperial stout.
4.5 Bottle. Aroma of sweet chocolate, molasses, roasted malt with light coffee tones, earthy/roasted cereals, a sort of evergreen outdoors-y quality (not piny hops or anything, a different, deeply earthy character that sort of blends with the molasses that I’m otherwise inept to describe). In any case, flavor very rich, richer than expected from the aroma, lovely chocolate and molasses notes, sweet but not sugary sweet, balanced sweet, and overall lots of depth and complexity. Didn’t notice any negative age impact, only what was apparently very nice maturing and conditioning. Really, really nice, much more than I was expecting.
4.3 Bottle enjoyed at DBGB. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of booze, vanilla, molasses, and roasted malt. Sweet and decadent. Flavor of sweet roasted malt, bitter chocolate, and molasses. Very smooth palate and very delicious. Age has done this beer well. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. 8/4/9/5/17 [4.3/5]
