3.6 Can from backlog. Black with a light brown head leaving lacing. Aroma: roasted, creamy, chocolate, fruit. Taste: fruity, licorice, soft roast, grape juice, purple grapes, wood. Medium-bodied, smooth.
3.5 Had from a can at The Green Eye in Chicago. Pours very dark brown with a mocha head. Aroma is chocolate malted milk. Slight fruitiness. Heavy bodied. Really nice. Sweet finish.
3.5 black with about a finger and a half of tan head that dissipates to the edges and leaves good lacing. aroma is roasted malt and ash. Flavor is roast, ash, dark fruit, and some chocolate. mouth feel is a little thin for a stout, with medium carbonation.
4.0 From Beer Temple. The oak isn’t as prominent as I would have thought, the malbec, give it an interesting tartness at the end. Weird or great, I’m going to give it the benefit of the doubt. Serving: Can
3.7 Can thanks to Ben, Cheers! Thick black pour, with a thin layer of chocolate head. Aroma is sour grapes, light roast, and tartness, interesting for sure. Taste is not nearly as tart as the aroma would suggest, up front there is some light roast, towards the middle there is some tartness , finishes with a bit of anise, aftertaste is lingering light tartness with roast. Really cool beer, I thought it would be a sour stout from the aroma but not so, there is still plenty of roast and richness, mixed in with the mild tartness from the grapes.
3.0 Tap somewhere in Asheville. Pretty neutral, inoffensive nose. Blueberry and cigarette ash. Moderate caramel. Smoked tea leaf flavor. Roasted malts, wood. Some pear and dark forest fruits. Medium body, average carbonation.
3.4 Pretty decent stout. Dark appearance, some strange dark fruit aromas accent the roasted coffee. A bit thin but with some good chocolate aftertaste.
3.8 Can, cheers Phil! interesting, very dry, burnt, cocoa, bit of vanilla sweetness, get the grapes a bit in the nose, but not so much in the taste. Bit of spice, liquorice maybe, lots of oats. Taste is good and smooth. I like this.
3.6 12oz can--foreign stout in a can, I’ll bite. Nice pour, tan head burns off to a collar, nice lacing. Aroma is pleasant, strong smell, quite good. Taste is pretty darn good, like a stout + some other stuff, the grape juice isn’t quite as evident as I feared it would be, win. Palate is long, long, long, but good.
3.3 Good dark pour w/ a tan head that leaves minimal lacing. The aroma good & sweet. The taste has good body & is roasty w/ some sweetness to offset it. Pretty well balanced & a decent brew overall!
3.6 (Can) Black colour with dense, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of coffee, treacle, black rye bread, dark chocolate and dried fruit. Malty, roasted taste with sweet black coffee, black rye bread, soy sauce, dark chocolate, brown sugar and a generous roasted bitterness in the finish. Can’t really detect much of the grapes, possibly a touch coming through towards the end. More than medium body, with a certain sweetness. Complex but still quite well balanced and tasty. Nice one.
3.5 On tap @ Radio Maria. Dark walnut brown. Sweet cola-ish nondescript aroma. Roasty palate with a fruity acidity that lends to drinkability.
3.5 Had this on tap at the Lake Flying Saucer. Pours a nice black color. Oak, cocoa, and dark fruit on the nose, followed onto the palate. Ends with a bit of roasty malt flavor.
3.4 On tap at Haymarket. Pour is deep black with a medium brown head. Aroma and flavor of light roast, cream, raspberry, oak chips, earth, and grapes. Finish is syrupy and sweet.
3.9 12 oz can. Poured a black with a thin khaki top. Taste of cocoa, roasted malt, vanallia, and sweet. Medium carbonation, thick body. Very complex brew!
3.5 Can. Pours an opaque brown-black with hints of red highlights and a high, tan, coarse-grained head. Nose is mostly smoke, cinnamon, vanilla and coffee; there might be a slight hint of dark fruit. On the tongue, it’s sweet with low carbonation; vanilla latte, nutmeg, and just a touch of wine. It has layers of spicy complexity that deepen the longer it stays in the mouth; an amazingly long, rich, and multifaceted finish that keeps changing. Very, very interesting.
3.5 Tap. Pours opaque black, small creamy brown head, nice lacing. Aroma is roasted malt, cocoa, red wine. Flavor is similar, perhaps a hint of oak, but not much, light sweet, light bitter. Medium body. Interesting.
3.8 This brew pours jet black with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily. Patchy lacing. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee and oak. Medium-bodied with flavors of roast coffee, charred malt, and chocolate. The finish is mocha and burnt malt. Pretty good overall.
3.9 Nice body. Dark roasted coffee bean, cacao, earth, wood. Hints of Malbec. Bit of the dark fruit and some plum. Balanced earthy hops on the finish. Medium/ long finish. Nice beer!
3.7 Looks like a stout. Aroma of loam, wood, chocolate and a bit of fruit. Grape/wine notes are stronger in the taste but still quite light.
3.3 Can. Clear reddish dark brown with a tan head that lasts on the sides and laces. Aromas of roasted malt, coffee, light fruit and dark chocolate. Flavor is roasted malt, dark chocolate, light coffee, and some fruit. Medium bodied, smooth with a slighty dry, roasty end.
3.7 Dark brown/black color; Medium slightly creamy body; Aroma of toasted malt, chocolate, caramel, & dark fruit; Flavor of roasted malt, caramel, dark fruit (notably grape), and chocolate; Pretty decent.
3.7 On tap at Avery Strong Ale Festival. Appearance: 2 fingers of brownish red head, dark brown color. AromaL oak, wine, coffee, chocolate. Palate: average carbonation, full body, creamy texture. Taste: sweet red wine to malty sweetness. Overall, top five beers of the festival for me. Unique and memorable
3.5 A black beer with a small tan head. The aroma is roasty sweet grains. The flavor is roasted malt and chocolate with the grape slightly perceptable in the finish.
3.8 On tap at wine 101 in wake forest. Not as sweet as I thought it would be and I was happy about that. Overall a great stout that does not overpower your tastebuds.
3.5 poured a very dark brown with a medium light brown head. Aroma of leather, meat, roasted malt, caramel, wood, with a lot of grape/fruit in the finish. Not sure what the grape addition and wood aging added, but the final product was solid. Fairly roasted and leathery up front, gives way to a more vinous note, slightly sugary finish. A solid beer.
3.7 Draft at Thirsty Monk during RBWG 2014 - Asheville. Pours red brown with a creamy, tan head. Tasty stuff with light smoked malts, burnt sugar, cocoa. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. Warming finish with burnt sugars, well toasted bread, chocolate. Nice.
3.5 Draft at The Thirsty Monk. Pours a deep coffee brown with a small beige head. Aroma of toasted malts, nuts, chocolate, earth, and dusty oak; not much of the grape juice is noticeable. Flvaor of chocolate, cola, toasted malts, earth, and burnt sugar. Medium-bodied, with a sweet, smooth mouthfeel and moderate carbonation. Smooth and a little dusty and earthy, but the grape juice is really subtle here.
4.2 Who knew that SKA Brewery that puts out mainly lagers and IPA’s would find the time to put out a stout, but they did. Dark hue. Foamy head and lace. Chocolaty taste. Hints of cocoa and sweetness. Full-bodied. I would have liked to have seen them take this one further with more booze but it works well. Definitely a winter or a cool springtime beer.
3.9 Brown black pour with tan head and lace. Aroma is chocolate and coffee. Chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt flavor. Thin and watery but ok
