A “Big Bird” by any measure! This years Trumpeter is a huge beer with rich layers of smoke, chocolate, roast, caramel, jet fuel, motor oil and hops. Blowing above 10% abv, this bird should walk not fly.

3.3No bottle date, assume this is 2013.
It’s thick and black, presents with good quilt of tan head. Smells nice and toasty with some graham, some earthy and sharp hops; some coffee and dark hershey’s chocolate on the nose. Flavor is roasty and toasty, some nice bready character, some nice prune flavor, a little leather. Thin bodied with low carb and a slightly sticky finish. It’s an okay beer for $7.
3.6Bomber from trade with michaelinwa. Niiice aroma roast chocolate smoke. Black pour no head. Taste when cold was great and less so as it warmed. Definite roast and chocolate in taste. Some burnt flavor and some bitter and alcohol. Good brew
3.9From a 22 oz bottle shared at home. Pours black with a thick tan head. Aroma of coffee and chocolate. Roasted malt and dark fruits round of the flavor. Bitter burnt finish. Nice.
3.9Bomber from trade with michaelinwa. Pours pitch black with a small head that fades quickly. Decent lacing. Aroma lacks complexity but is still pretty nice. Mostly chocolate and roast, touch of smoke. Taste is a bit on the sweet side for me. Not enough bitterness to counter. Good flavors though, rich chocolate, roast, smoke, and some caramel too. Love the mouthfeel, thick and oily. As the beer warms it turns into sticky tobacco, which I love. This was an excellent extra to receive in a trade. Thanks Mike.
3.5Deep black pour, thick, dense, resilient head. Aroma is light roasted malt. Flavor Taste is roasted malt, dark chocolate, and significant bitterness in the middle. Mouthfeel is slight thick and velvety. Finishes with lingering bitterness. Pretty nice stout that pushes the limits of intensity for me, but stays out of "overdone" territory. If I wanted a big, intense stout, this would be a good choice. Definite aging potential here, although not sure whether this is bottle conditioned/filtered.
4.422oz bomber poured into a snifter. Pours black with a half finger of dark brown head. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and dark fruits. Taste is light bitter. Mostly coffee and dark chocolate with some fermented dark fruit. Full bodied with a thick texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, great. I would love to try an aged version.
4.122 once bottle from LetsPour, poured a dark brown, almost black color. Aromas of coffee, dark chocolate, a touch of vanilla, and somme lactose. Flavor is big and balanced coffee and chocolate, blended nicely, solid beer that I am glad I got to try.
3.922oz bomber ordered from LetsPour. Pours a stout brown with an off-white head. Nose is roast, dark fruit, coffee, and dark chocolate. Flavor is similar with coffee, dark fruit, and dark chocolate. Medium in body and finishing with lingering coffee and dark chocolate. This one was kind of a dark horse. I was very nicely surprised by this one.
4.122oz bottle. Pours solid black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, light coffee, caramel, molasses, and dark fruits. Flavour of roasted malts, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, light smoke, wood and nuts. Roasted, full bodied, really dark.
3.3Black, frothy brown head. Aroma of dark fruit, malty sweetness, alcohol, not as roasty as expected. Taste is decent, pretty sweet, light roast bitter, alcohol is noticeable.
3.8Good Stout. Pitch black with a fluffy tan head. Toasted espresso bean on the nose. Thick and full bodied with mocha and some dark chocolate. It doesn’t have the expression or length of top Imperial Stout on the finish compared to better versions.
3.8Bomber. Pours black as motor oil with a solid layer of light brown head. The aroma is surprisingly devoid of the standard Imperial Stout notes of chocolate and coffee. Instead there’s a fair amount of cherry, molasses, roasted malt, licorice and caramelized sugars. The flavor opens up with a heavy dose of caramel, roast malt and espresso as well as some black cherry, date, licorice and alcohol notes. Just a little bit of an herbal hops presence in the background. The body is slightly syrupy with some creaminess and adequate carbonation. The finish is predominately chocolate, roasted malt and dark fruit. The overall flavor is sweet, rich and smoky with just enough complexity to make it worth seeking out.
3.5Poured into a tulip at bottleworks.
Pours black with a small tan head.
Gives off a rich espresso aroma.
Lots of coffee, chocolate, and dark fruits in the taste, very rich.
Powerful mouthfeel, smooth and creamy with a slight bitter finish.
Overall, it’s a very drinkable imperial stout. Sure there are betters out there, but it’s a nice local brew.
3.9pours a creamy rich dark black. aroma strong of smokey coffee, chocolate and caramel. first sip was strong of all aromas and thick creamy taste. overall was a great pour from a local brew
3.922 oz. bottle shared by Keir at the STL RB Gathering- thanks again, Keir! 2006 vintage. Pours an almost opaque brown with a small tan head. Aroma of big chocolate notes, dark fruits, roasted malts, and nuts. Just a ton of chocolate in there. Flavor of roasted malts, chocolate, oaky, earthy notes, and coffee roast. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a smooth, rich mouthfeel. Has held up great for 5 years, particularly in the nose and appearance. Very nice.
3.7Sampled at the Saint Louis Ratebeer Gathering into tulip glass. 2006 vintage. Thanks, kier! Poured an opaque dark brown color with weak tan head but fine lace and alcohol legs. True-to-style Imperial Stout aromas and flavors. Dry, fruity, nutty, toasty, very roasty. Hints of black coffee, dark chocolate, plums and wild cherries. Somewhat oxidized in an interesting way, like port, not a flaw. Held up very well to 5 year aging. Recommended.
3.3Sampled at the St. Louis RB gathering. It poured a dark brown/black color with a brown head. The aroma was dry roasty chocolate. The flavor was roasty, charred chocolate and light fruit. A very good Imperial Stout.
3.8Sampled at the st. Louis rarebeer gathering. An ’06 vintage. I smell chocolate and tobacco. Powdery chocolate flavor with ash. This is smooth and good. It aged very well.
3.8Thanks to 5000 for sending me this bottle.
The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a tan head. The aroma is full of roasted malt and chocolate, with the added bonus of having some dark fruit and a little bit of anise mixed in. All of the components go well together.
The flavor is full of milk chocolate and heavily roasted malts. I also get a little bit of alcohol which accentuates the big, bold flavors present in this beer.
Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.9(22oz bomber thanks to Mora2000) espresso brown pour with very dark tan head and excellent lacing. Nose of fudge, rich chocolate, mildly roasty, milk chocolate, nearly decadent in the nose. Taste is very roasty, nice bittering herbal hops, fudge, well balanced and delicious.
4.0Very dark pour. Small beige head. Aroma has light smoke, prune, molasses, mocha and roast. Flavor is lightly sweet, toasty, hint of smoke, charred oak. Nice brew.
3.6Bottle from mora2000. Dark pour with a brown head. Aroma is coffee, dry cocoa, and alight alcohol. Taste is lots of chocolate, roasted, a little coffee, and licorice.
3.8Bottle courtesy mora2000. Pours a dark brown color with a tan head. Aroma is sweet chocolate and dark heavy malts. Flavor is sweet malts and milk chocolate with roasted notes that fade into a bit of roastyness. Cool.
3.5This poured a darker brown color with a light tan head. Aroma was lots of dark roasted malts, light coffee, and some raw dank hops. Flavor was very roasted and bitter, with bitter raw hops in a swallow a bit different than most impys
4.1Lots going on in this surprisingly tasty impy stout. Plenty of roast with a nice creamed-espresso note. Also some dark chocolate, toffee and a nip of smoke in its edgy finish. Milkshake-like texture was silky and smooth. Weighty on the tongue, too. Not overly sweet (aside from some lactic-like sweetness), thankfully, and it even has a curiously dry aftertaste. Overall, it was a pleasure to drink.
3.8On Tap at Brewery. Pours athick, rich dark brown/black with a thin light brown head. You can taste the strong alcohol content, but it is not a bad taste. Focus is all on the rich roasted malts, I don’t remember anything about hops on this one.
3.722 oz bottle. 12.14.10.
Pours dark black with a creamy soapy espresso colored head. The lacing is excellent as well as the legs. The nose is light roasted dark malts, slight espresso, oats, anise, citrus hops, smoke, and darker fruits. Taste is light roast, light espresso, bitter hops, slight smoke, anise, clove, dark fruits, slightly sweet chocolate, and almost a very slightly sour red wine finish. Mouthfeel is a little thinner (but barely noticeable) than most Impy Stouts I’ve had but it is very creamy which is a plus. Great beer, especially for only $3.99. I’ve heard it cellars really well so I’ll find out in a few years.
3.922 oz. bottle, pours black with a tan head. Aroma of oats, molasses, vanilla and light espresso. Flavour is a bit fruity, but it could be the combo of vanilla and molasses; there is a noticeable hop profile on the finish. Excellent.
3.722 oz. bottle from a local beer store. This beer has a thin, nice tan-colored head. The beer is opaque and has a nice black body. Lots of roast and a subtle chocolate aroma. More roast than anything else in the aroma. A touch of smoke rounds the aroma off quite well. Lovely sweet chocolate and roast flavor. The smoke adds a nice touch to the flavor. This has a nice balance to it. Not extraordinarily thick, but it has a the right texture to it. There is a lasting bitterness to this beer. This is a very solid Imperial Stout with some great flavors and aromas.
3.9Bottle at Papsø’s - Thanks. Black - brown head. Burned malts, high smokey, licorice, ashtray, fruity, chocolate, light oiley, high malty, medium hoppy, light bitterness. Nice.
