Sleeman Rousse / Dark

Rousse·Dark

A special combination of roasted barley malts and English Aroma hops gives Sleeman Rousse·Dark its balanced taste and clean finish. This medium-bodied brown has ruby hues and a dense tan foam. Its roasted malt flavours feature hints of caramel and toasted grains for a well-balanced, aromatic ale with an impressively clean finish.

2.2 Unfortunately other than its appearance and colour, I found this red to be somewhat disappointing. Expected more of an intense taste and aroma. Others do this better.
1.5 Wifes boss had a Christmas party. Yeah...... poured copper with 1 finger of head that disappeared before we could raise glasses for a toast. Sweet aroma, some malt, but little else. Tastes the same - nothing downright offensive but fairly boring. Sweet malt, that’s about it. Light body, not overly watery but very little character to it. I’d take it over most buck a beers, molbatt offerings or macro imports but it served to remind me why i switched to better beer.
1.8 Sweet aroma with some hints of roasted malt. The roasted malt doesn’t come through in the taste though; mostly just malty sweet and watery. Too flat.
3.9 311 ml bottle. Dark red color with a medium head. Nice aroma. Good taste with is own charactter. I was actually impressed. A good red ale.
3.1 341ml bottle. Pours reddish brown with a tan head. Aroma is dried fruits, with dark sugars, earthy, faint cinnamon. Taste is fruity malt, brown sugar, faint spice, black tea, with mild bitterness in the finish. Very British in style. A little thin on flavour, but MUCH better than I was expecting, and easily drinkable. I’ll buy it again.
3.3 Bouteille 341 ml. 5.5%.
2.0 pours dark golden-copper, not red, with an-ok head. some toastiness here, but no roastiness, some decent caramel matls. malt-lacking body. same herbal sleeman hops, no generous hopping.
1.8 Full disclosure - I’m picky about Rousses at the best of times, and given Sleeman’s track record, I’m not optimistic; but I am one with an open mind and do believe that even macro breweries can make a fine beer once in awhile. It pours with an antique white pillow of head of modest size and a clear brown-amber body with no carbonation. It has a very faint aroma of rice wine adjuncts and malt. The flavour is sweet malts with a cloying rice finish; almost drinkable, plenty of sweetness to create a decent mouthfeel. But those are only minor points for a beer that is still not very good at all.
3.0 Browned amber body with modest head. Easy mildly dunkel malted aroma and flavor. Pretty restrained hoppiness, with the hops most likely being of the English variety. Earthy malting. Wood seem to fall within the amber lager/dark lager domain
1.5 WTF! what is this? why is this callled a dark? it is like a mass produced micro-filtered red ale more than a dark ale. red is the colour it isnot dark. it smells like and adjucnt lager, something labatt’s would brew. i am not getting any roasted malted notes that one would expect from a dark beer. i get slight biscuit notes, which is more pislner in style than dark. it taste much better than it smells however, as i get a ever so slight malted note. i can’t beleive i spent so much time on this brew. sorry.
2.2 341ml bottle. Pours clear amber/brown with eggshell head that leaves a little lace. Smells like roasted corn meal and slightly rancid caramel. So very watery on the palate with a hint of spice and hops in the finish. Wouldn’t be as bad if the mid-palate had anything at all to say.
3.2 Called "Sleeman Rousse" in the province of Quebec. Pours a copper-amber colour with an off-white creamy head. Decent retention and lacing. Malty nose with some light sweetness, like caramel (also fruity), and well-balanced with some mild hop. Medium-bodied with the malt and hop present in the taste as well. Nothing too punchy, but a nice refreshing macro amber overall.
(Rating #3314)
1.9 Sleeman Rousse. Pours a reddish amber with a thin white head. Aroma is caramel and hop. Taste is caramel malt and some light hop. Overall not great but it’s better than most macro swill. Tasted in a parking lot after a ball game.
3.5 07/2007, Original Dark 50 Amber Ale: Pours a nice deep -- but clear -- red with visible carbonation. Leaves a full finger of pillowy head. NIce too look at, as well as a surprisingly good drizzle of lace. Contains a German malt smell, bitter and sharp, but also slightly roasted. It’s a bit dark, contains that bitter amber smell we love/hate so much. It’s a bit weak; not too heavy. Nice and pleasant roasted malt flavor. A little bitter, a little sweet. (Are those berries?) Not a sharp bitterness, but a dull one (a good thing). Sweeter as it warms. Really nice flavor. Some smoky flavor adds to the depth. Feel is medium bodied. A bit creamy too. It’s not too thick but not at all watery. All told, it’s a nice, cherry-sweet amber. Roated malt, smoky. Quite well done, actually.
2.3 Bouteille 341ml.
2.7 Nice dark amber colour with better than average tan cap that has pretty good retention and leaves decent lacing on occasion. Ample fine effervesance. Smell isn’t really a downer because I didn’t expect anything from this brew. Lightly roasted malts, some sweetness, but there is a stink that I would not define as skunky - it’s a step up from skunky. Either way, it takes a while for any solid aroma to arise and by then your beer is gone. Needs more aroma early on to make this more enjoyable. Beer seems watered down, but the flavour is still decent. Nice malts, typical hops, icky cold coffee and some weak candy flavour - a candy that could only be given to you by your grandmother. Mouthfeel is alright but not great - one has to accept this bitter aftertaste that arises. A bit too fizzy and light bodied. Very Sleemans - if your not a fan, this beer won’t change your mind.
1.2 Very similar to Upper Canada Dark A slight malt aroma with some metallic, and ink aromas also. Flavor is harsh, and bitter, with some odd cardboard notes. yuck.
2.6 12 oz bottle. Poured a clear amber color with a one finger off white head. The aroma was sweet malt and some earthy notes. The flavor was metallic with some sweet malt. Mainly metallic.
1.0 12-2-08. Gift box shared with my brother. Pretty bad stuff. Smelled of tea and a very thin molasses. Tasted like bad honey, nut, and tea leaves. I couldnt finish it because it hurt my stomach.
2.8 Bottle. I’m not going to waste a true rating on this. . . But if you are between drinking this and any other light beer, or any other american style lager, Take this.. . it hasa nice malty character.
2.6 Pours an off-white head that descends quickly but leaves some lacing. Amber brownish body... but htat should be obvious simply by looking at the bottle. Yeast and malts in the aroma... not too bad aroma overall. Ok malty taste. Mediocre metallic finish... which is probably the worst thing about this beer. Slightly sweet though. Drinkable, but there are plenty of better beers out there, so there is really no reason to buy this exccept as another notch in your belt.
3.1 Pours a dark, warm, almost opaque mahogany with a decent head. Aroma is malty with hints of spice and yeast. Flavor is well-rounded, mainly malty with some hops and touches of spice and smoke. Mouthfeel is nice and edgy so it goes down rough.
3.0 11.5 oz bottle Dark 50 version. Pours a medium amber color with a lasting off white head that left good lacing. Aromas of malt and white bread. Malt dominates the flavor, but has an interesting light and smooth hop finish. Light to medium body with a slightly dry texture and nice soft carbonation. A good beer that I will drink again and very cool bottle (even though it’s a half ounce shy).
2.5 It’s been a while since I have had this one, purchased in a 12 pack variety of Sleeman beers: it pours an almost translucent copper colour with a small off white head. Plenty of caramel and semi-sweet malted notes, flavor is mildly acidic with soft biscuity malts.
2.5 Pretty average. A god beer but nothing that stands out. Slightly malty, not to sweet. overall good taste.
3.2 THOUGHTS: Sort of British with a North American Twist. The flavor was nice up font but the finish flavor was not so nice. Not a great beer, but a lot better than I thought it would be. It was full of malty goodness. Not the greatest flavor, but a very distinctive flavor. Bought it mostly for the bottle, so this was a nice surprise. Bonus point for bottle. TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a clear, medium to dark amber with a small to average head that kept a slight sheet. The aroma was moderate caramel and grain malt, light herbal hops and slight fruit and a little citrus too. The initial flavor was moderately sweet and lightly to moderately acidic; while the finish was heavily sweet, moderately acidic, very lightly bitter and sour with a short duration. The flavor was caramel malt with some citrus and a little sour fruit with just a touch of hops that increased as it warmed. The medium body was a little dry and somewhat syrupy with sort of soft carbonation that later seemed fizzy and a light astringent finish with just a touch of metallic also.
2.6 Light amber with a medium white head. Aroma of citrus and caramel. Light tasting of caramel and sugar. Pretty bland, mildly astringent, not much going on here.
2.0 pours amber, thin white head, sweet malt nose.sweet malt with slight hop notes on the finish.Ok beer nothing great.
