Sly Fox Grisette Working Class Ale

Sly Fox Grisette Working Class Ale

Grisette is a Belgian style ale which was originally brewed in the Hainaut province to be the beer of the miners in the area, just as Saison was the beer of the farmers. It was lighter than Saison and frequently contained wheat as well as barley malt (as does the Sly Fox version). The name is derived from the French word for "gray," referring to both the drab factory frocks worn by the young women (the grisettes) who doled out pints as the men exited from the mines, and also the color of the cobblestone rock being mined.

3.6 Can from BottleDog, Edinburgh. Milky golden body with a thin white head. Lively carbonation. Light lacing. Aroma of lemon, wheat and orange pith. Flavour of chalky malts, zingy orange and coriander seed. Dry finish. Medium body with a creamy texture. Soft fizz. Grossly overpriced at £7 - how much of that is BrewDog mark-up?
3.1 Can from Stirchley Wines at Brum Beer Fest; hazy straw yellow pour with a frothy white head, aroma has yeast and citrus action, taste has yeast, lemon, some spice, ok.
3.8 12 ounce can. Pours a pale gold with a massive frothy white head. Subtle yeasty wheat malt nose has a lemony accent. Flavor mirrors the aroma. Tangy wheat and lemon with a slightly sour funkiness. Some dryness in the finish, with a hint of white pepper. Refreshing and flavorful.
3.3 Can from the Rugby Tap. Aromas of spice, Brett funkiness, ripe strawberry, citrus. Taste is tart fruit, slightly citric, spice. Slightly funky finish. Refreshing.
3.6 FULL FLAVOR AND POWERFUL spice with nice full body that is not gritty. aromatic and airy. satisfying even if you dont like or want the style. light pale yellow kind of lemony with white head.
2.2 Draft kop f&h. Big foamy head leaving fish rings in my glass on a clear yellow pour. Much more hops bitterness than I would expect from the wheat, malt, and farmhouse yeasts. Love a great saison , this was Not really my style.
3.3 Can. Foamy pure white head, hazy lemon golden yellow. Banana, light spice, hay, citrus, and slightly sour grass in the aroma. Again, banana, slight vanilla, spicy yeastiness, sour hay, and citrus flavor a in the finish. Lighter chalky soft body. Kinda comes across like a Hefeweizen, but still decent tasting if I ignore the style listed.
3.4 Crystal clear light yellow in color with a big but quickly dissipating head. Looks like a flat cider. Smells of wheat, yeast, rotting lemons (not as bad as it sounds). A little bit sour on the tongue. Not bad but not really my style.
3.4 Pours a hazy pale yellow with thin white head which doesn’t last. Aroma of wheat, bready yeast, lemon, straw and herbal. Taste reminds me a lot of a decent wheat beer, noticably sweet before becoming quite tart and bitter/sour. Pretty nice stuff although not a style I usually go for.
3.8 Pours a hazy golden orange with a thick white head. Aroma of grainy wheat and peppery Belgian yeast. Taste is bready wheat, spicy black pepper, slight hop bitterness with a creamy wheat finish. Really nice everyday beer.
3.6 Can from Rehills, Newcastle. This is a cloudy yellow-straw coloured beer that pours with a thin white head. It has a spicy lemon and tart floral fruity flavour, a creamy mouthfeel and a herbal, very dry finish. Very full flavoured for a mid-range ABV.
3.3 Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a murky peach color with a medium sized creamy white head that lingered and left good lacing. The aroma was musty and bready with notes of bubblegum and phenol. The flavor was musty and dryish with a strong bready note a slight medicinal presence and bubblegum. Medium length finish. Medium body. Decent.
3.7 Can from Rehills Newcastle. Delicious. Flavours of spices, banana, sourness, bread. A very complex beer, bursting with flavour
3.4 A light spice, not heavy. Light yellow and cloudy. Best to let it warm a little. Tap.
3.4 A bit sour, some fruity notes, a mild straw background, and some yeasty spiciness. Pretty good.
3.4 On tap at NOVA Summer Brewfest in Bull Run Regional Park in Centreville, VA. Cloudy , pastel yellow with a near-white head and good lacing. Aroma of spice, pepper and light lemon. Taste of spice, pepper and light lemon. Medium/light body and medium/low carbonization. Finally, a "refreshing beer" that does make me want to pour it out and grab a lemonade. It's similar to a saison, but lighter and brighter tasting.
3.5 Nice light and refreshing beer. It has a light spice aroma with some lemon. The flavor is slightly sour and nicely balanced. Very good for the hot weather.
3.5 Light and refreshing. Has characteristics of a Hefeweizen too. Spicey at the finish. Crisp
3.2 Can at Craig’s. Pours hazy yellow, nose is yeasty, citrus, taste is light, yeasty, fruity.
3.5 Can shared at chriso’s Post-GBBF Shindig 2014 - London. Pours lightly hazy pale yellow with a creamy white head. The nose holds crispy wheat and lemon, with some accents of soft dough. Light sweet flavor with notes of yeast, sweet lemon. Light bodied with average carbonation and airy texture. Lightly tangy to finish with more sweet lemon, light dough and wheat. Nice.
3.3 can. Hazy pale golden with one finger head. Pretty average take on a saison. Light body and rather mild spicing. Would like a bit more flavor.
3.3 Honey golden color. Great head. Aftertaste peppery bitter. Aroma is spicy, pepper.
5.0 I would sleep with this beer, Aroma is malt, hop, citrus, wheat. Taste is the same. Good flavor which isn’t too sweet; well balanced. Spice kicks in as well as it gets malty on the finish. Sticky on the back end. Sessionable beyond belief.
3.8 Cloudy, flat golden yellow. Massive puffy head. Belgian yeast funk in the nose, grains of paradise. Pretty standard Belgian ale aroma: pleasant. Just a bit doughy, and a bit horsey. Flavor is mildly sweet citrus, with a spicy finish. The funk is less pronounced, as it manifests as more of a sweetness. Touch of charcoal? Ashy, dry finish. This is a very solid beer, and I’d have to say that although I’m not super crazy about most Sly Fox beers, this one is very fine.
3.7 355ml can @ Hoppy Loft.
3.4 Can shared at Christ’s post GBBF minidig 16/08/2014. Picked up at Cotteridge wine. Aroma is nice saison yeast, orange and wheat cereal. Hazed yellow/ straw coloured pour with a lasting white head. Flavour is crisp, straw, orange peel, nice saison yeast character. Palate is light palate, high chalky carbonation. Nice drinkable beer.
3.0 4 oz draft pour at ChurchKey. Hazy yellow with off-white head. Aromas of lemons, floral and grassy notes. Tastes of lemon, floral and grassy notes, subtle tartness. Medium-light body with a dry finish. Decent attempt but doesn’t really stand out for me.
3.7 Draft at Churchkey. Cloudy yellow color, white edge head. Aroma of herbal, dusty haystacks. Taste is herbal, spiced, peppery, earthy. Decent.
3.4 Six cans. Given the associations we have about Belgian beer here in the States, it seems strange to see it labeled as working class. Apparently, the style does have proletarian roots. Light straw color, spicy aroma, flimsy white head, but it leaves good lacing. Fairly standard Belgian blonde, with good amount of spicy flavor. Could pass for a saison, given the looseness of that style. No funk.
3.7 This poured a hazy yellow color with a white head. Aroma was earthy, cracked wheat, lemon Peel and.vanilla sweetness. Flavor was very well balanced, light tartness, wheat grain, some.marshmellow and yeast. Tasty stuff.
