Smuttynose Baltic Porter

Smuttynose Baltic Porter

Native to northern Europe, Baltic porters evolved from British porters once exported to the Russian hinterland. Unlike their British cousins, Baltic porters are often brewed as lagers, the tradition we’ve followed. This beer is big, bold & smooth, with malty flavors reminiscent of coffee, dark fruit & raisins. 3.9 Pours black with medium beige head. Aroma is grainy, hay, dry, fresh, some oats, roast, bread, sharp. Taste is coffee, roast, hay, some sharpness, dry, cereals, some ash. Very nice beer!
3.8 12 fl oz bottle from Hopsession, Osnabrück. Pours out pitch black, oily consistence, Mighty dark beige frothy head. Smells malty but also parts like buttermilk. Häää? Tastes totaly different. Sweet malty, dark berriefruity, choco, coffee, also some sweetness. Nice complex stuff.
4.2 Piana niewielka drobna, beżowa. Kolor ciemny bez prześwitów. Aromat ciemne słody, czekolada, lekka słodycz suszone owoce. Smak :) się dzieje, piwo bardzo ładnie ułożone, gładkie pełne smaków, gorzka czekolada, kawa, lukrecja, suszone owoce, lekka palonośc, popiół, delikatnie szlachetnie likierowe-alkoholowe. Dość słodkie nie ulepkowate z wyraźną nie dominującą goryczką. Całość gra pije się bardzo przyjemnie. Porterowe WOW
4.5 As far as local beers go, this is about the best you will find. Just a gorgeous looking beer from the pour, which carries every bit the flavor anyone could hope for. Leaves you wanting more, like another 4 pack.
4.3 bottle at JK O'Donnell's - Pours near black with a lingering tan head. It smells of dark roast malt, coffee, and chocolate. The flavor is intense roasted malt, coffee, smoke, chocolate, and hops bitterness. It's full bodied and has a great balance, leading to a long, roasted malt finish. Superb beer.
4.0 From May 2008 I got this bottle from nutbrown in a trade. Thanks Alan! Cool looking label and I'm stoked to try another Baltic Porter. My experience to the style is very limited... It pours a pitch black with a 2 finger head of tan foam. Good lacing and very good head retention. Dark fruit dominates the nose for me but I also get notes of smoke and roasted malt. The taste...Roasted malt is nicely done here followed by notes of coffee, caramel, and dark fruit. The flavours are really big but I'm surprised how smooth the overall drinking experience is. Mind you, the abv is right up there where it belongs for the style but I still find it quite drinkable as the alcohol shows itself as just some warming after the swallow. It's pretty close to being full bodies and the carbonation, I'd say, is about medium. The finish has a nice bitter coffee finish that lasts for quite a while. I like sipping on this one and it will probably take me a while to finish the bottle. Not a negative comment regarding its drinkability, more of a I don't want to see the end of the contents of the bottle. That's always a good thing. ;^) I think Smuttynose did one hell of a job here.
4.6 Pours black and opaque with a nice dark tan head with an aroma of malt with a hint of caramel and coffee. Tastes exceptionally viscous and of rich malt, coffee and a hint of cocoa. Clearly it’s full bodied with moderate carbonation. The lager takes a back seat 💺 to the ample malt. The alcohol is well hidden in this big Baltic Porter. It finishes abruptly and clean. The very mildly bitter coffee lingers. The palate is viscous but not sticky. Wow, where is the alcohol? It’s choc full of ingredients but it’s easy on the palate. There is a hint of warming. It sure does compliment a cup of hot coffee. Perfect. Nothing like a strong Baltic Porter.
3.8 Flaska från SB. Soja- svart kulör med brun skumkrona. Doft av syrligt kaffe och mörk choklad. Söt och frisk munkänsla. Ganska tjock kropp.
Bez ochów i achów. Przyzwoity porter bałtycki i nic poza tym.
4.3 Aroma; roasted sweet malts, sweet nuts, berg almonds, old sweet leather coach, liquoriced chocolate - very inviting! Look; jet black love, reddish beige top. Taste; sweet roasted malts, sweet nut pudding, little-hill almond candies, fruity chocolate, smooth dark toffee, sweet baked sugarfilled plum, yummy yummy - lingering sweet soft finish. Feel; soft, smooth, good body, splendid. Overall; one of the very best baltporters ever! Got it all! [shared 35.5cl btl w Ronald at CafeSånn]
4.2 Appearance: Very dark brown, near black. Some very dark tan head. Aroma: Very dark fruits, dark malt, nicely roasted. Taste: Very dark fruits, ripe, dark malt, well roasted. Sweetness. Great balance. Bought: Vinmonopolet (Online), 355 ml, NOK 69.90 Info: 22/9-2017, BB: ??/??-????
4.5 Simply put, the best American Baltic Porter. The malt profile assaults your senses at first sip with a very light sweetness and a hint of chocolate. Then the flavor opens to a full-bodied crescendo of deep, flavorful raisin/plum taste. Wonderful aftertaste, with just a hint of a boozy finish. Not a beer that you would want to drink 5 bottles, but definitely one where you can savor one.
2.7 Aus der Flasche im Hopfenreich getrunken. Das ist keine 100 Punkte wert. Die Polen können es besser.
4.5 This was shared with Strykzone on Facebook chat. Dave has already had this one before. Pours black with a dark tan head. Great lacing .Nose is chocolate, dark ripe fruit, raisin. and coffee. Full body. A very creamy and smooth mouthfeel. The flavor is rich roasted malts with chocolate, coffee, dark ripe fruit and raisins. Finishes with some light bitterness. This beer is simply decadent. A real winner.
3.9 0.355 l bottle from 'BierPost.com', bottled in 2016. Pitch black with a thin, slightly creamy, stable, beige head. Sweetish-malty, slightly roasty and a bit fruity aroma of milk chocolate, nougat, licorice, some vanilla and a touch of dark fruits. Rather sweet, malty, minimally roasty taste of nougat, cream, licorice, vanilla, hazelnut and traces of dark fruits, followed by a medium long, moderately roasty-bitter, slightly earthy and a little warming finish. Medium to full body, slightly creamy mouthfeel, soft carbonation. Very pleasant and well-made, easily drinkable despite the abv, good!
4.3 Vintage 2015. Slight soy sauce, plums, raisins, lots od chocolate and some coffee, light roastiness. Sweet, smooth and mellow, very round

4.1 Aromas of peat, berries, charred roasted malt, and balsamic vinegar. Taste is charred malts, smoked peat, light star anise, balsamic vinegar, berries, dates, chocolate, and grassy hops.
5.0 Bottle from the LCBO. Pours inky black with a thin tan head. Extremely smooth mouth feel. Lovely mildly sweet chocolate, roasty malt, coffee aromas, some raspberry and cherry. Similar flavours. Delightful.
4.1 Beautiful notes of coca, roasted and blueberries, black with a good brown head, medium/full body, not too carbonated, again strong notes of cocoa, blueberries with a light and pleasant warming final...simple and cheap but not everyday you can drink a beer like this.
3.9 Bottle - decants jet black, defies light getting through the glass - smallish tan cap forms surface lace. Aroma of dried fig-dates, roasted grain char and whispers of sweet burnt treacle. Medium- heavy bodied, slick mouthfeel. Flavor has firm Baltic Porter characteristics - roasty, plenty of roast grain body, dried dark fruit tones, some smoke, licorice notes, burnt treacle...long wet finish dries up a bit with some bittering and roast astringency - a very decent American dry Baltic - nice for sipping or pairing up with some shell fish.
3.8 355ml bottle. Jet black colour with average, thick, creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, tan head. Chocolately, minimally roasty, dark malty aroma, hints of plum, raisin, a touch of coffee, some liquorice. Taste is roasty dark malty, chocolately, sweet-ish hints of caramel, burnt caramel, some coffee, liquorice, alcohol-soaked dark fruit; full body, oily texture, sticky palate.
3.8 Aus der Flasche 2015-09 getrunken. Ein wunderbares kräftiges Porter. Überraschen süffig für seine 9%!
3.8 Bottle 33 cl. Black with a small light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate, coffee and licorice. Sweet tasteight bitterness, with a warm chocolate and coffee end
