Smuttynose Durty

Smuttynose Durty

Now known as Smuttynose Durty Mud Season Hoppy Brown Ale

Smuttynose is proud to introduce our eighteenth Short Batch Beer, "Durty," a brown IPA!

There’s no denying that IPA is king of the craft beer world right now. The style is getting so popular that even the big brewers are attempting their own versions, while IPA sub-styles, like session IPA, double IPA, white IPA and black IPA, continue to be created and defined. Brown IPAs combine the caramel and nutty-biscuity flavors of a brown ale, with an American IPA-sized does of hops; it’s pretty straight-forward, but pretty delicious.

On to the beer...Durty is a big beer (8.4% abv, 55 IBU) packed full of big hops. We’ve used Polaris, a new German high alpha variety for bittering, followed by American hop icon, Nugget, for the flavor additions and finally, a boatload of Simcoe post-fermentation for dry-hopping. The malt selection isn’t too different from Old Brown Dog, but it’s a bit heavier on the nutty character and dark cocoa notes.

3.9 12 ounce bottle. Pours a reddish brown color with a moderate frothy beige head. Rich toasted malt flavor with herbal hop notes. Rich complex roasted malt flavor. Spicy hops and cocoa notes. Peppery hop notes in finish. Boozy coffee liqueur notes as well. Quite nice is this.
4.0 Most drinkable 8.4 ABV I ever tasted. Subtle coffe aroma, nice malt, not too bitter and not too fruity. Be careful with this one.
3.6 Bottle from Perfect Pour. Nice dark brown body with medium, mocha head. Nose is of malts, dark chocolate and coffee. Taste is hoppy with chocolate and spicy kick. Lots of fun and a lasting, warming finish. Nice one.
3.3 Poured a lighter brown with a beige head. Aroma was of herbal and citrusy hops and caramel. Flavor similar, not a huge fan of this style.
3.1 Drank from a pint glass poured from a twelve ounce bottle, purchased at Bourbon Street Liquors in Califon, Nj. Smells like a Smuttynose. Nice and tasty for a hoppy brown ale.
3.8 The beer pours dark brown with a deep tab head. The aroma has deep toasted malt, mild coffee, nuttiness and some earth hops. It has a big rich body that’s velvet with super soft carbonation. The taste has rich walnuts, toasty malt, cream and that touch of coffee from the aroma. The finish shows some hops that are woody/earthy. Really solid.
3.9 Dark, brown color. One-finger, off-white head. Aroma of roasted malt , nuts and tropical fruits. Balanced taste , where moderate, malty sweetness changes in hoppy bitterness.
4.2 Aroma: chocolate, roasty, caramel, bread, Appearance: amber with a beige head Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: medium body, sticky, average carbonation, long finish, Delicious
4.7 Nutty robust malt herb coffee citrus fruit smell. Nice dark shady brown color. Taste is out of bounds. Nice nutty malty taste up front with crazy citrus fruit hop flavor and bitterness on the second half. Full body on the palate. Just the right amount of carbonation. This beer what ever you classafie this one as is a game changer. Way to revelutionalize the industry.
3.6 355ml bottle. Clear, dark hazelnut colour with ruby red glimmer and late awakening, huge, thick, creamy, mostly to fully lasting, superbly lacing, beige head, building ’latte macchiato’ layers like strata appropriate to ecstasize every geologist. Malty aroma is rich in nutty and toffee notes, hoppy overtones span a broad area from fruity orange to herbal mint. Taste is minimally sweet nuttily malty, toffee notes, a touch of caramel, butter, nougat and cocoa, hoppy counterweight serves up orange, orange zest, mint - flavours fully compatible with the malt body, whereas the bitterness is not. Not that far from a Barleywine...
3.6 mohogany-brown color; roasted malt aroma with some hops; roastedmalt flavor with piney hops; bitter, piney finish; medium bodied
3.7 A brown IPA, eh? Interesting idea, Smuttynose. It does a pretty good job of delivering on that promise, with a good amount of roasted malt flavor and a strong (but not overpowering) hop taste. It could be a little more intense, especially at 8.4% ABV, but I still look forward to it every year.

3.4 Rated on 9-13-2015. This bottled beer, best by 06/17/15, forms a small beige head with a lengthy retention, copper transparent body, lively, fast rising carbonation observed, and a fair amount of lacing. This beer’s aroma is roasted malt, light hops and some chocolate. The flavor is semi-sweet, roasted malt and chocolate. This beer is light-medium bodied. A quaffable easy drinking beer that has a light roasted aftertaste.
3.2 Pours a very cloudy and very dark brown color that’s almost black with a 2.5 finger frothy beige head. Great retention, only slowly fading into a lasting cap. Chunks of soapy lacing left behind. Surprisingly hop forward aoma with grassy resins and hop oils. Floral with pine needle, grass and spruce tips. This aggressive hop presence overpowers the brown ale notes a bit too much but there is some caramel malt sweetness along with hints of chocolate and subtle roast underneath. On the lighter end of medium bodied and tastes very similar to the aroma. Very hop forward with resinous hop bitterness dominating the flavor. Dry and floral with grassy hop and sticky pine needle flavor lingering over a slightly roasted malt backbone into a dry finish. Hop profile is kind of one dimensional and the malts are impossible to pick up until it warms up considerably. After a while there is subtle toffee, caramel and chocolate malt sweetness along with burnt toast and coffee bean.
4.0 Donker rood met een goede beige schuim kraag. Ruikt fruitig, zoet, autodrop, snoepjes. Smaakt drop, fruitig, zoet. Nice.
3.6 Keg at the beer temple. Pours deep brown, nose is crystal malt, toffee, roasted, taste is sweet toffee, dry, chewy.
3.2 Keg at the beer temple... Dark red brown... Small white head... Soft sweet toffee fruit malt nose... Soft sweet toffee malts... Sweet red malts
3.4 Draft at Beer Temple. Pours hazy brown with a medium tan head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, fruity hops and overripe dark fruits. Flavour is light heavy sweet and moderate bitter. Over medium bodied with a fairly thick mouthfeel and soft carbonation.
3.8 This bottled brew from a bottle shop poured a head of foamy with a frothy top light brown colored bubbles that were long lasting and left behind a no visible carbonation opaque except at the edges black brown colored body and a spiderweb lacing. The mild aroma was medicinal musty and mild vinous. The crisp mouth feel was tingly at the start and at the finish with a lingering vinous aftertaste. The tasty flavor contained notes of pumpkin vinous burnt malt and dark malt. A decent one that I would consider drinking again.
3.9 Dark chestnut color with thin frothy head. Deep nutty aroma. Sweet brown ale nuttiness with some toasted caramel malt. This one strikes me more as a hoppy brown ale than a black IPA...and I like it that way. Some pine hoppiness gives a nice balance to the malty/nutty sweetness. Rich mouthfeel, coating but not cloying. I like this one.
4.0 Pours a dark brown mahogany color, with a thick frothy tan head. Aroma is maple syrup, malt, and a slight note of pine hops. Taste is very malty with a nutty cherry wood flavor coming through. Sticky syrup like feel. Slight hop presence. Very well balanced. Good easy drinking beer.
4.1 An awesome amalgam of dry spicy IPA and malty barley wine flavors. Malty but not caramelly, this one is far more earthy, like an amped up brown ale with an aggressive dose of English high alpha hops. Very nutty finish. This redhead leaves her sticky lace draped cross the glass and has a long sassy hop spice fade.
3.7 From bottle. Pours dark reddish brown with big foamy beige head. Medium bodied. Very sweet aroma with hints of raisins, liquorice, toffee. Strong alcohol taste, a bit sweet but mostly bitter. First impression was very good, mostly because of the strong aroma
3.9 Bottle camping in France. Brown pour, thin off-white head. Aroma of nuts, toffee, fruits, some spices and a bit of bread. Flavor is quite bitter fruity hops and nice thick nutty malts. Great balance, unique brew.
3.6 Pours a brown color with off-white head. Caramel malt, some pine, and roast on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with malt and hop notes, a little brown sugar sweetness too.
4.1 On tap at beertemple, amsterdam. Body is hazy brown, head is big, brownish, rocky, fully lasting, excellent lacing. Nose is malty brown sugar, flavor is caramel, brown sugar, vegetables, light spices, leather, earth, cocoa. Medium to heavy sweet, medium roasty bitter. Finish is medium lasting roasty medium bittersweet. Full body, dry sticky texture, average carbonation. Easy dessert beer, quite easy, tasty, great one.
4.2 Bottle: Dark reddish brown with a thin head that quickly dissipated. The aroma is malt, floral and citrus. The flavor is hoppy and roasted malts. Very enjoyable.
