3.2 Pours red with amber hues, pig off white head, lacing and foamy. Fruity notes with bread and malt in the nose. Tart cherries and some malt. Very little bitter to go along with it. I like me some Smuttynose, but just not my style.
2.5 Dark red body with a thick white head. Fair lacing. Bitter taste and aroma of cherries. Very tart. Too fruity of a beer for my taste. it was ok, but I won’t but it again.
1.9 Blah. Terrible beer! Aroma was metal and a hint of dark cherry. Pour was a nice enough deep dark crimson with a one finger off white head. Taste was very thin, watery and uneventful. Sour dark cherry is present but barely comes over the water. If this beer had less water flavor it would be in the 4s as the flavor hits on lambic territory- it’s just too faint to enjoy. Nice carbonation and no aftertaste. All in all a sloppy boring beer.
3.1 12oz bottle from Market Square. Murky brown pour with thin dull tan head. Aroma is yeasty light cherry. Taste is a juicy malt and cherry mix. Slight sourness comes through late. Grainy mash vibe mixed in. Finishes up a tacky sticky sweet. Long pucker vibe. Strange. Not as horrific as the rates would suggest, but a bit muddled.
3.8 Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark red-orange color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma was caramel, nut, yeast and light notes of berry and pecan. The flavor was tart sour cherries, caramel, pecan, cream and yeast. The finish was short with tart berries prominent. Medium body. Interesting.
2.9 bottle pours pink with a medium white head. Aroma is floral with tart cherry. Flavor is grassy with pale malt and a fruity finish of tart pear and cherry.
3.1 From bottle. Light sweet-tangy cherry aroma, not overpowering and kind of acidic. Mild hops, light malt sweetness. Fruity but dull. Medium amber-brown clear with a bit of reddish tint to it and some chill haze, topped with thin off-white lacing head. Medium bodied with medium carbonation and light carbonic acidity. Starts medium sweet with lots of tart cherry fruity flavor, light malt sweetness and some acidic carbonation tang. Finish is fruity with a bit of muted bitterness, but not hoppy. After is smooth with cherry notes and a bit of sweetness on the tongue. Not a bad ale.
2.5 (Bottle) So much more potential from a great brewer. Presented as frivolous ale, I expected a lighter, fruitier style. I wanted more fruit and deeper cherry flavor. Not bad...pleasant cherry finish. Not a chick beer.
3.3 Interesting ale. Cidery orange pour. Very strong tart cherry juice taste. Rated 8/14/08
3.4 tap at Blind Tiger: unusual beer. musty and tart arouma. Citrus is puckering, cherries and berries. Bubbly carbonation and finishes dry. A bit overattenuated, I think, I’d like more sweetness.
2.4 sampled at dark lord day 2010. clear copper color, small tan head. nose of malt and cherries. flavor is pretty much the same. not very interesting or complex. probably a good drink if you have a raspy throat. my 1234th rating, accompanied by a sesame street counting video....
3.4 Tap at Blind Tiger. A bit underrated I would say. Pours a dark amber with a creamy, off-white head. Lots of lacing. A light aroma with notes of sweet malt and bread. More sweeness in the flavor. A nice fruit character: Some cherry and strawberry, along with mild tartness in the finish and whip cream. Medium bodied, a little tart and with mild bite. Mild malt caramel and fruity aftertaste. Nice. Refreshing. Crisp.
4.0 I had this on-tap at Bocktown tonight. It was the only one I had not sampled (actually I had never heard of it). The waiter told me it was a sour ale so I ordered it. It was served in a snifter and had a beautiful appearance. Translucent and foggy red body with nice 1 finger white head. Retention was excellent and plenty of lacing was left behind in the glass. Nose and Taste were very similar. They were strong on sour cherries-but not overpowering. There wasn’t much else to the taste other than the medium tartness. It was sour cherries the whole way through. Very consistent. Mouthfeel was medium to low carbonation and medium weight body (not thick as most lambics are...which helped the drinkability.) Overall this was a pretty darn good fruit beer. The best cherry flavored one I have had as of yet. Yes, I will have this again. Serving type: on-tap Reviewed on: 09-28-2007 04:52:12
3.0 Bottle. Poured orange and reddish with a small white head. Aroma is sour fruit, sweet, with little hop presence. Flavor is mostly tart, a bit sweet, with light cherry notes and perhaps some other fruit as well. Moderate carbonation and a bit thin. It’s alright.
3.1 Had this in bottle, had a ncie head, cherries were very subtile, and the ale behind was nice but not all that malty. Some lacing and a clean finish
4.5 yo this beer is best very cold very refreshing its gonna get girls drunk if they dont hate it since its sour
3.0 This poured a cloudy medium brown color with an off white head. Aroma was mild artificial cherries and some brown malts. Flavor was alot more malty and sweet than i expected. Artificial cherries mainly, not tartness like i was hoping for.
1.6 sour. not sweet, hardly any noticeable cherry, except maybe black cherry. again very sour. headless, light on the fizz. very disappointing. bottle from Stop and Shop, Miami
3.4 Bottle. Pours a nice dark amber red/brown with a frothy white head. Smell is definitely earthy, some gay and "barnyard funk" to it. Some fruit, but not overwhelming. Taste is a bit of a letdown. Sharp taste and very crisp mouthfeel. Tastes like a pilsner but with a lot more lemon than usual. I was disappointed with the lack of cherry that I was promised. Overall: meh.
3.2 On tap at Bacchus. Pours a lightly hazy ruby orange brown with a medium sized almost pink hued beige head. Fruit, sweet pear candy, little tangy, caramel. Medium bodied, almost tangy floral sweetness. Some sort of esters going on here that I can’t quite place. Definitely perplexing. Finishes up with more fresh plum sweetness and tartness.
3.1 Tallahassee, Fl - Market Square Liquors - 12 oz bottle. Pours a dark orange to crimson with a sticky off white head. Label reminds me of a Pokemon - but Smuttynose always has off the wall labels - I kinda like them. Aroma has some spiciness to it with some hints of ginger if I have to pin it down - hint of caramel as well. Flavor has a bit of an odd fruity twang to it - pick up some honey, some fruit roll-up kind of flavor, some green tea. A bit odd to say the least - kind of reminds me of something that Dogfish head would put out. Mouthfeel is nice and sticky.
4.0 2007: Hazy, deep cherry red look. Impressive pink head. Clear but with a slight haze. Almost looks like wine. Some thin lace that quickly goes away. Nice estery ale smell with a hint of a deep cherry. Only a slight sweetness. There is a hint of bitter pine hops. Normal ale with a little more. Flowery. Excellent ale flavor with a sour/pungent cherry flavor. The sour instead of sweet is perfect for this brew. Delicious. Like a sour cherry wine. Bubbly like champagne, and yet it’s quite dry. Dances on the tongue. Excellent summery drink that actually has some body. Dynamite. I was sad to finish it. Not so much a beer as closer to a lambic or something, but hit my taste buds just right. I don’t like fruity beers but this one is outstanding.
3.1 draft @ redlight redlight. Hints of cherries on the nose with some cereal malts. Pours a reddish amber with a thick white head. Somewhat of a tartness upfront. Tart cherries upfront with some malty sweetness and bread-like malt flavors. Not bad for a fruit beer but I’d like it to be a little more tart.
2.7 Draft at redlight redlight. Pours a pinkish amber with a very lacy off-white head. The nose is not so good. Pretty pungent with a lot of basement mildew and some wet dog. Behind that is a funk I like but the unpleasant odors overwhelm it. The flavor, on the other hand, is a vast improvement. Mildly sweet cherry notes upfront with a dry, tart finish that is quite nice. I definitely can enjoy this, though it is rare to find such a drinkable beer with such an unpleasant nose. I would love to try the bourbon barrel and brett versions.
3.4 Bottle sampled during the fall 07-am i the only one that likes this thing? copper hue with a soapy white head. fruity and slightly oxidized nose with cherries, raspberries, and light carmel malt. wow, flavors show more toasted malt than i was expecting-almost belgian-esque. berries come into the finish that lasts quite a long time. pretty decent palate like all smutty beers. This thing is better than it rates, at least for me, somebody that likes little beers. I must try this fresh and see how much better it is.
2.7 Bottle. Pours a clear copper/amber, small beige head. Cherry and some malt in the aroma. A sweet and rich cherry, a little syrupy, is front and center in the flavor profile, a touch of wood at the end. Cherry was a bit cloying by the time I finished this one. Good, but wouldn’t drink two in a row.
4.1 I really enjoyed the cherry in this beer, the cherry flavor is very strong and overwhelming. I am a big fan of strong cherry beers like Krieks so this was right up my alley. The first beer I tried from Smuttynose, and the reason why I came back the their brews.
2.1 12oz bottle. Pours a clearer fairly dark orangish red with a frothy thicker slightly pink head. Aroma of rice, sour malts, chalky yeast and a syrupy bright cherry juice tartness. Woa, flavor is moldy cherries, very bitter, chalky, I can’t believe there isn’t rice in this, sharp maraschino cherry juice, macro like malt grainy sourness, very medicinal overall. Medium bodied, corse fluffy sharp carbonation.
3.6 Pours a nice coppery brown with a fairly thick if not persistent head. Aroma is malty, yeasty, slightly fruity and a bit sweet, typical for an ale. Flavor is quite fruity, rather like a cider, a little fruity-sweet with a firm tone of cherry and some malt. Texture is quite smooth and a little fizzy, leaving a sour cherry finish.
2.8 this one just doesnt work, the cherry taste doesnt jive with the ale flavor and creates a really sour, annoying taste that doesnt make you want to have another sip, let alone another beer.
