Smuttynose IPA

Smuttynose IPA

Smuttynose IPA is a physical salute to the glory of the American hop grower. The citrusy hop flavor coming from a mixture of Simcoe and Santiams is pleasantly balanced by a smooth bitterness from the Amarillo hops. The beer itself is light bodied and crisp with a golden color that will throw a slight haze, as we bottle it unfiltered. At 65 IBU’s, this is definitely not a training-wheels IPA, but is meant for hop lovers looking to satisfy their craving in a way that’s not easy to find. We think they’ll be quite pleased.

3.8 12-ounce bottle under the name of Finest Kind IPA. Pours bright, clear gold with a tiny spritz of white head and lacing. Aroma: citrus, tropical fruits, honey. Flavor: mango, passion fruit, papaya, macadamia nuts, pineapple, tangerine, honey, pine. Mouthfeel: medium-bodied.
3.3 Draft 0.5l at Samo Pivo Belgrade, Serbia. 08.05.2017. Pour it hazy yellow color with small white head. Aroma sourish and malty. Taste citrusy, crisp, orange, not so fresh again, light body, finish really thin feel, slick feel, average carbonation, bitter and odd.
3.5 Bottle enjoyed during at tilted kilt in Boston. Backlog rating from bottle collection and historic scoring.
3.0 12oz bottle. Pours gold with a small off-white head. Aroma is grass, citrus, pine, and a little malty sweetness. Taste is pine resin, orange/citrus, light caramel, a hint of grass, and a tiny bit of soap. Bitter finish. Light body. Average carbonation. Crisp. Highly drinkable. Nothing all that noteworthy about this one, but it is a very solidly executed IPA.
4.0 Simply put, this is the best IPA you're likely to find in the Northeast. When you want to have a crisp, hoppy beer after a long day, you be hard pressed to find anything better.
3.7 Taster pours at NH Brewfest and the source, can (7/22/22). Appearance is mostly clear yellow-brown, nice sparkle, finger-width foamy white head with good retention and fair lacing. Aroma is hoppy melon, tropical fruit, grass, orange-citrus, pine and cracker/biscuit. Taste is pine/grapefruit, bitter resin--not as fruity as the aroma--and late biscuit. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with thin frothy/foamy texture, average-to-lively carbonation and dry finish as taste, more bitter than sweet. Overall, this was a little milder than I expected but with decent complexity.
3.3 From Aug 2006 Poured from 12oz bottle a cloudy reddish gold with a fairly large head of foam that shrunk quickly leaving a solid layer for most of the session and then.. diminished some more until just a very fine layer remained. The smell is quite hoppy with notes of citrus like grapefruit and lemon and there's a bit of malty sweetness in the nose as well. The taste is actually a bit sweeter than I expected. The hops are definitely in control with grapefruit and lemon and a bit of grass but the malt presence kind of eases the bitter tones until the finish when it becomes quite bitter and very refreshing. Good stuff! Bottom line: A very good example of an American IPA. Thanks go out to jwc215 for including this one in our trade!
4.0 Pours a pale golden with strong white head. A floral hop aroma. Light bodied with a big flora and melon hop character. Notes: bottle at Vino Volo, Logan Airport Sep '17
3.8 Musty oat malts with a syrupy sweet hop profile. Like the shoals pale ale, but slightly stronger.
3.8 Dégustée au Mondial de la Bière de Montréal 2009 (De mes notes papiers). .
3.3 Can = pours a lightly hazed gold with a 1 finger white cap that reduces but lasts - aroma is grapefruit-floral-piney with a decent sweet malt underpinning flavor follows aroma - clean finish, not overly hoppy but a session IP decent but not distinct.
3.4 Pours a semi cloudy golden colour, with a decent sized foamy head. Aroma has notes of biscuits, citrus, and resin. Tasting notes include passionfruit, grapefruit, pine, and some biscuit. Slightly dry, bitter finish to this decent IPA.
4.1 Rich honeyed aromas layered wth tropical fruit and burnt sugar. Crisp and creamy with a touch of pine on the pallet.
3.4 12floz bottle purchased at the per unit equivalent price of $1.50, BBD 08.24.2017, pint glass. Appears pale gold body with a slight haze, and has small layer of head. Tropical fruit aroma with evergreen, translates to what is expected a medium-full bodied beer with hop bitterness. Fruity and metallic (not in a bad way) middle-of-the-road American IPA.
3.8 Golden and hazy pour. Smells of resin and forest. Taste is well balanced resin and hop bitterness, a lot of dry malts. Medium bodied, a big classic IPA, very enjoyable.
3.8 OK, this one was pretty damn, good. Tasty without over powering , hoppy without the yikes. Good decent beer, lots of taste and character can from LCBO need more of this
3.5 2017/04/05 - Pours a clear, medium gold colour with a soapy, white head slowly reduces and leaves moderate lacing. Aroma is citrus and tropical fruits, light caramel with lightly spicy and floral hops. Taste is caramel, resin, tropical and citrus fruits with floral and herbal hops. Mouthfeel is medium with moderate carbonation and a dry, lightly sweet, moderately bitter finish. A little more malt forward than I had expected, but good nonetheless.
3.7 It’s a fine beer, as in it’s fine, not like fancy fine. Smells nice and almost flowery, pours golden. The taste is light and thin; slightly hoppy but not bitter. I wouldn’t say it satisfies a hop craving per say, but it’s more flavorful than some lesser beers. Good for your last night in town for the week before you abandon your sweet love for Florida sunshine.
3.8 A nicely balanced east coast IPA with a citrus zest nose and spicy hop bite. The light malt backbone stands up to the unusual hop bill, and this one is well thought out. An easy quaff that belies it’s stout 6.9%. I like the fact that this one eshews the resinous mj component of west coast IPAs while still showcasing it’s altogether different take on hops. Excellent.
3.4 Pours light gold with a decent white head that leaves plenty of lacing. Aroma is pine and tropical fruit. The taste is quite bitter with a hint of sweetness. There are notes of tropical fruit, pine, grass, grain and resin. It’s a pretty decent IPA with some distinct flavours and plenty of IBUs.
3.4 .33l bottle @Mallaskukko. Pours cloudy yellow with medium head. Aroma is hops, malts, leaves, herbs, pine notes, resin and grass. Flavor is mostly same with dry and earthy fresh mouth feel.
3.3 Can. Pours a hazy rusty golden color with a wispy large to white beige head. Nose is bittersweet citrus with appreciable pine and resin. Taste is bitter with softer citrus and harder pine and resin. Finishes on the same hard bitter notes with a long piney and resinous finish. Mild lacing . Quaff Score 6 / 10
3.4 Bottle as "Finestkind IPA". Clear golden color with white head. Aroma is grapefruit, piney. Taste is grapefruit, pale malts, nice residual sweetness. Oily mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Not bad.
3.4 "Finestkind" bottle from the Beer Store. Peachy honey pour, fairly clear and lustrous; faintly sandy head. Aroma is big toffee malt up front, with peach, plum, slightly overripe tropical fruit following. Taste is where this beer shines - toffee sweetness up front, but not cloying. Fresh, flowery and piney hops kick in fairly early on and stick around for most of the drink. Sticky palate works for the flavour profile. While I prefer my IPA’s a little less malt-heavy, this is a solid, easy-drinking brew.
3.5 Can from LCBO. Interesting to scroll through a few pages of the reviews & see the split in opinions. Even more interesting to read the reviews from 10 years ago. Maybe this was a hop bomb back in the day but now its more of a lawn mower ipa. Bit of a clunky old school ipa in my opinion: more emphasis on ham-fisted pine bitterness than hop expressiveness. You’ll recognize this interpretation of the style the minute you taste it of you’re an ipa aficionado. By no means is this bad. I like it. It just feels dated (which is ok).
3.4 35 cl. bottle @ Home. Aroma: not very intense aromas of grapefruit, tropical fruits, mango, passion fruit, fruit, tangerine, citrus. Appearance: light amber-golden yellow color with under average head thickness. Slightly off-white head with good retention and medium Brussels’ lacing. Quite hazy beer. Taste: low sweetness, medium-to-high bitterness, low sourness. Good and intense flavors of grapefruit, tropical fruits, passion fruit, fruits, citrus, maybe orange peel. Palate: light body, watery texture, average carbonation, very long, dry and bitter finish of grapefruit, tropical fruits, passion fruit and fruits. Overall: very good appearance, not very intense but good aromas. Quite intense and very lingering flavors of grapefruit, tropical fruits, passion fruit and fruits. Very drinkable and refreshing despite of its high bitterness. Good IPA.
3.5 Pours a slightly hazy caramel color with a thin lasting white head. A perfume like floral hop aroma with notes of minerals, resin and caramel. A taste of mineral hops and floral hops a light medium body. Dry mouth feel and a light mineral hops finish.
3.6 Slightly hazy yellow beer with smallish head on top. Aroma has grapefruit and some sweet fruits with also pines. Taste has pines and grapefruit, slight bitterness too in the end. Medium body and medium carbonation.
3.9 473ml tallboy from LCBO. Pours a huge frothy off-white head that sticks around for quite awhile and has a slightly hazy golden orangey appearance. Fairly excessive carbonation. Aromas are orangey, citrus hops, notes of floral and hints of bready malts. Flavours are fruity, mostly of the citrus variety. Some subtle hints of grapefruit in the finish, very light. Some bready malts as well as faint caramel malt. Medium bodied. Great retention. A little bit of bitterness on the palate, maybe expected a bit more. Pretty easy to drink, smooth and a bit creamy.
3.5 473ml can. Pours a hazy pale gold with an off-white head. On the nose, almost sugary icing-like notes, with resinous hops and some tropical fruit buried underneath. Taste wise, medium sweetness, orange peel, grapefruit, and mineral notes that head into soapy hops, floral notes, lots of citrus pithy bitterness, and lighter fruit notes that linger in the finish. It’s decent enough to buy again.
