Smuttynose Old Brown Dog

Smuttynose Old Brown Dog

Old Brown Dog has been cited as a classic example of the “American Brown Ale” style of beer. Compared to a typical English Brown Ale, Old Brown Dog is fuller-bodied and more strongly hopped.
Old Brown Dog has been around for many years. It was first brewed in 1988 at the Northampton Brewery. In 1989 it won a silver medal in its category (American Brown Ale) at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. It has since been retired from competition but enjoys love and respect from people all over the world.

3.5 Pour deep mahogany with one finger, dense head. Aroma is caramel and brown sugar. Taste is caramel, roast and a hint of clove. Finish is smooth malt. A very drinkable beer when looking to be sociable.
3.0 Taste sweetish, caramel malts, lightly fruity, somewhat hoppy. Faint but pleasant, lingering hoppy aftertaste. Nothing wrong with it, tastes just too thin.
4.0 Pours brown with a tan head with an aroma of earthy caramel malt. Tastes of sweet caramel malt with a bread and mildly bitter hop finish. It’s medium to light bodied with moderate to lively carbonation. It’s a bit nutty.
3.3 Well... It Is Brown. I was looking for more malt expression, and they talk of additional hippiness. Really? It Is brown. Don't know how old.
2.6 A misleading taste where you expect a smokey, earthy taste and instead you get an intense sweetness. Still welcoming but confusing. Reviewed - A Brew With You, Ep. 86
3.7 From old tasting notes. Deep reddish brown color. Small beige head. Roasted malt nose. Soft chocolate malt flavor. Long chewy malt finish.
3.8 12 oz bottle dated "best by" 3/2011 served in pint glass (from 2011 notes). Pours a dark amber with a very slight haze and a small amount of tan head. Head quickly dies to a bubbly partial coat with excellent duration. This is a rich and flavorful brown ale with a strong toasted malt base and a bit more hoppy bitterness (IBU = 15) than usual. A little earthy. Flavor is much stronger and more complex than the aroma. Some noticeable esters despite moderate ABV of 6.5%. Rather full body. Moderate carbonation.
4.7 Love this brown ale! It has a delicious, rich nutty flavor to it. It’s my new favorite!
3.0 Malt bomb city, caramel and toffee and sweet tea on top of mild, almost undetectable hops. Much more English than the description would lead you to believe, with apple esters and the teensiest bit of floral bitterness falling squarely in Brit territory. Looks...weird, lots of particulate swirling around amid the brown haze, and the nose is flat malt and sweet apple. Palate feels a bit off, too, undercarbonated, which might be why it seems so damn sweet. Still drinkable, though.
3.4 Bottle. Simple, standard brown. Malty. Not bitter at all. Good but not unique. Represents style well
3.4 Bottle. Dark Brown-Amber in colour. Malty; roasty malts, smoke, chocolate. Hoppy; spicy fruity hops. Tasty. Good. Very drinkable. (2010-11)
3.7 Pours hazy cream soda brown with little head. Aroma is sweet and malty. Taste follows with some nice sharpness. Molasses, brown sugar and real depth of flavor. Very mild backend bitterness. Touch of hop only. Excellent brown ale. I could drink a lot of these.
3.7 Another favorite I was disappointed to find I hadn’t yet rated. On tap. Clear brown. Fine white head. Nose is roast grain, tied right to the palate. Sweet honey roasted grains, maybe a syrup tease. Perfect early winter fireside slugger. This beer never disappoints.
3.4 Bottle 33cl. @ The Beer Garden Store, Madrid, Spain. A: Hazy brown. T: Malt, chocolate, nuts, slightly hoppy.
3.6 Roasted chocolate like malt aroma and flavor. Full flavored and balanced brown. I like it.
3.5 Flasche gekauft im Whole Food, Housten Street, New York. Braun-rötlich, klar, wenig Schaum. Aroma Malz, Karamell. Voller Antrunk.
3.1 Too much carbonation. Very malty. Slightly astringent with chocolate and grassy notes. Odd
3.2 Vom Fass im STRONGBOWs Kiel. 0,3/4,50€. Solide.
3.3 Marrón caoba, tinte rojizo y de escasa espuma. Aroma poco marcado, malteado. En boca tiene paso facil, buen punto de gas, punzante. Cuerpo moderado. Equilibrada, de predominio dulce malteado en la base y notable contrapunto lupulado, seco, especiado, y ligeramente ácido frutal, de frutas rojas.
3.5 Dark brown/cider color; Medium body; Aroma of malt, caramel, & some nuts; Flavor of slight roasted malt, caramel, chocolate, nuts, and some hops; Nicely balanced; Solid brown ale.
3.0 Tap poured at Portsmouth Brewpub with Crayola girl. Pint glass. Color is a cola brown with minimal head. Almost looks like it might be flat. Nose has roasted malt and caramel characteristics. Mild. Taste doesn’t surprise you bringing the same malty, caramel qualities and feels pretty subdued. Slight malty sweetness. No real hint of bitterness. This feels really average.
3.0 Bottle. Pours clear, dark brown, with a two-finger, creamy, beige, lasting head that leaves good lacing. Aroma of resin and pine. Light to medium body, lightly sour, leaves a sticky sweetness in my mouth, a bit too much carbo, a light caramel taste and a light bitter and sour finish.
3.5 C-. Pours a clear brown color with white head. Has an "interesting" aftertaste
3.3 On tap the beer pours a dark brown color with a medium head. The aroma is roasted malts, licorice and some caramel. Taste has more roasted malts, raisins and some herbs. Short finish.
3.3 Sample at hayseed. Pours brown with a khaki head. Leaves some lacing in the glass. Solid caramel on the nose. A bit sweet on the tongue normally but it does cut the spice of this jambalaya nicely. Finished clean. Solid beer though I like my brown ales to be nuttier
2.9 Strong caramel malt in the nose with slight hoppy fruit at the end. Pours dark golden with brief foam. Medium body and slightly slippery mouthfeel. Caramel dominates the taste with a little biscuit and slight hoppiness. Moderately sweet finish. A good, mild brown ale.
3.4 Not much to say about it. Quite good broan ber and easy to enjoy. Very malty and indeed sweet was too.
3.1 Pours golden orange with a small off-white head. Aroma is caramel malty and light fruity, biscuit and some hops. Taste is high sweet.
3.2 Fad. Fantastisk at får to amerikanske ratings i Seoul på en tilfældig pub i Itaewon. Bedste kvarter i Seoul for øl by far. Man kan tydeligt mærke den amerikanske indflydelse. Brun lys let brændt og sødlig. Fin øl.
