Smuttynose Rhye IPA

Smuttynose Rhye IPA

In craft beer, there are almost as many bad rye puns as there are bad hop puns; Smuttynose is happy to spare you from more of either. Instead, we’ll tell you about our new Big Beer, Rhye IPA. We brewed it because we like drinking hoppy American-style beers and we wanted a chance to brew with rye. The rest, as they say, is history. The result is a 7% hoppy IPA, with rye spiciness and big hop character. This beer will really get under your armor…
The image on the Rhye IPA label is a famous drawing of an Indian rhinoceros by 16th century German painter and printmaker, Albrecht Dürer. Dürer had never seen the creature before and created the drawing based on one deScription and a crudely scribbled sketch.

3.5 Pours with a light head but very nice nose. Hops topping the maltiness. Taste more malty than expected and still some hops present. A little bit short on the palate.
2.8 Pours a hazy, deep golden orange color with tangerine edges and a half finger off-white head that slowly settles into a thin, lasting ring. Decent retention with sporadic spots of soapy lacing left behind. Sweet and earthy aroma with grassy hops, spicy rye and a strong malt character. Lots of caramel sweet along with some bread, toffee and roasted nut. Slight floral hop presence with a bit of resinous pine but the malt profile and rye take away from the hops in the nose. On the fuller end of medium bodied with a crisp hop bite up front that lingers over the spice and sweet malt backbone into a slightly dry finish. The rye is very prominent with a nice spicy, zesty flavor that nicely compliments the dry, earthy bitterness of the hops. Hop profile is a bit one dimensional but still has nice flavor. The malt backbone is huge, much stronger than I prefer. Lots of caramel, biscuit and toffee. Good for balance and blends well with the rye but it takes away from the hop flavor a bit too much for my preference. Still, this beer is very dry and bitter with spicy, grassy hops and dank pine needle character. Overall a decent tasting beer but I don’t think I would seek it out again.
3.3 Part of a sampler at Jet Rock at PHL terminal B. Hazy copper with minimal head. Malt dominates the flavor and aroma.
4.2 bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Aroma of fruit and malt, along with citrus hops. Hazy dark orange amber color, frothy two-finger beige head, cobwebs of lace. Taste is toffee and malt that cruises through a lightly carbonated swallow to a finish that has plenty of citrus hops, albeit, not enough to damage the malt. I’m not getting any taste of rye,...but, it doesn’t matter. This is a terrific, well-balanced, complex brew. Highly recommended.
3.9 Keg at Ushers. Hazy orange. Nose is sticky sweet resin and caramel, orange marmalade. Taste is sticky and sweet caramel and fruits, resinous hoppy bitter, citrus marmalade, rye maltiness. Sweet but great.
4.0 (Bottle) Orange amber colour with frothy, off-white head, leaving traces of lacing. Malty, fruity nose with apricot marmalade, Seville orange, crisp-bread, a touch of honey and fresh citric/resiny hops. Malty, fruity taste with notes of apricot marmalade, orange, grapefruit, pineapple, mango, crisp-bread, honey and a generous citric, resiny bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Fresh and tasty with a generous hop profile. Excellent beer.
3.7 Bottle. Orangy amber beer with a very strong smooth white head. The aroma is hopped with medicinal qualities, and the flavour is extremely well hopped and dry with a herbal like quality and a touch of yeastiness. Overall a nice very strongly hopped IPA.
3.6 Pours brown orange with a fine off-white head. Smells sweet caramel malt, citrus and rye. Taste is spicy rye malt lemon-orange citrus to a bitter hop grapefruit finish. A well-crafted beer and a nice example of the style.
3.9 Bottle @ home. Amber colored. Aroma of tangerine, pine apple, Rye bread, caramel, citrus and flowers. Medium bodied smooth taste with a dry and assertive grapefruit bitterness. Bitter taste with tangerine pine apple black currants and grapefruit, toffee, caramel and bread.
3.6 Tap...floral hop aroma leads the way to a piney hoppiness over a slick rye malt backbone, Refreshing and easy drinking.
3.7 12 ounce bottle poured into a brandy snifted. The beer is a hazy copper color with a white head of foam. The aroma has rye spice, pine, and floral hops. Medium bitterness and moderate fruity sweetness. Dry finish. Medium body and medium to lower carbonation.
4.1 Aromas of rye, earth, pine and citrus. Taste is smooth but with a sharp rye presence and some spices. Pretty complex for being an IPA. I love it!
4.0 Love rye beers and this is a brilliant one. Slight spicy(herby?)ness from the rye, which balances well with the fairly punchy hops.
3.8 Bottle. A little malty. A bit of caramel. Toffee perhaps. Nice picture of a rhino on the label, pretty cool. Get one.
3.5 Bottle from Beermerchants, enjoyed at Åserød. Pours hazy deep golden/amber with a big creamy weak beige head. Aroma of caramel malts, rhye and resiny fruity hops, almost Barleywine like aroma. Taste is moderate sweet caramel and toffee, with a dry resiny and herbal finish. Moderate carbonated, clean light dry mouthfeel.
4.1 bottle from beeritz Leeds. Cloudy deep amber. lasting white head. Nose of toffee and cedar. A equal balance of pine, tangerine, pineapple and toffee malt but with a distinctive finish of caramel. A real complex ale a ding dang do!
3.6 Hazy deep amber and copper body and a nice, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of rye, deep resinous and piney hops, some oatmeal and other specialty grains and a deep sweet smell from tropical fruits. Medium-bodied; Assertive grain and rye flavours up front with a good dose of hops and bitterness right behind, all with a smooth texture and good balance of malt to hops. Aftertaste shows the rye coupled with the herbal bitterness with almost no sweetness at all. Overall, a well-balanced rye-based IPA with a good level of hoppiness and a nice balance, but without some of the other complexities of yeast and sweetness noticeable. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Total Wine in Alexandria, Virginia on 17-May-2015 for US$2,06 sampled at home in Washington on 04-August-2015.
3.6 In bottiglia. Colore ramato, schiuma fine e abb persistente.
3.3 It pours amber with aromas of rye, citrus, and plums, It has a citrus and rye flavors with floral accents and dark fruit flavors.
3.8 Dark copper pour with a medium white head. Standard IPA hop aromas , the peppery Rye malt works great with the hops.
3.4 bottle ambrata velata schiuma media grossolana non molto persistente buona nota maltata lieve caramello discreto nota luppolata agrumata buon amaro
3.4 12oz bottle from Beermerchants.com. Reddish amber brown, good head. Flowery grain resin malt aroma. Flowery boiled sweet vanilla rye hop and malt flavour. Bitter citrus aftertaste. Big complex flavours, I prefer my IPAs more bitter & simple.
3.3 A great beer made with rye. It’s mostly an IPA with not a huge hoppy ending, but what makes it really interesting is its wonderful aroma and its beautiful body.
3.8 Rye, when used in combination of the right hops, can be a nice additive to an IPA. It imparts spicy, bready flavor not even found in the Noble hops. So few breweries seem to get the combination of rye, malts and hops done well, but once in a while they do. Case in point: Smuttynose Rhye IPA which is flavorful, well-balanced and highly drinkable. I poured a 12oz bottle into a tulip glass. It had a best by date of 8/2/15 and cost $3.39 ($0.28 per ounce). Appearance: Dark rusty copper hue with an extremely cloudy body. Pours to an average sized, off-white, foamy head that retains and laces pretty well. Smell: Lemon lollipop and other citrusy scents, though rye is also present. A bit of an odd combination. Taste: You probably wouldn’t eat grapefruit with toasted rye bread, yet those are flavors that seem to work well in beer form. Lemony hop flavor is noticeable immediately (though it seems closer to yellow lollipop – usually a sign of oxidation). Quickly followed by caramel sweetness and a hint of toffee. Through the middle comes significant bitterness, though it’s remarkably tame even at 89 IBUs. The rye stands out on the finish with a light spicy sensation and a bit of a bready flavor. I even detect a bit of coffee in this palette (it’s the aromatic malt). Overall, everything works quite well to make for a fun and interesting drink. Drinkability: At 7.7% ABV, Smuttynose Rhye IPA is arguably a double version of the style, though it drinks like a traditional single edition. The mouthfeel is not too heavy; well carbonated so as to prevent it from being cloying, but still weighty enough so that it’s not exactly crushable. A bit of a dry lingering sensation on the tongue, but it’s tolerable. A good beer to pair with a savory dinner. Score: 8/10
3.6 Bottle, 650 ml from Svijet Piva, Zagreb. shared with JFK10000. Pours dark yellow to orange with huge white head. Caramel malts, fruity and sweet, yeasty as well. Very drinkable.
3.3 355ml bottle. Dark copper body with a medium white head. Tropical fruit, pine, caramel, rye bread. A bit too boozy finish.
3.1 Hazy amber color, big tan head. Malty nose, caramel, wort, peppery notes, hint of grapefruit. Sweet taste, malty, ripe fruit, light bitterness. Medium body, soft carbonation.
4.2 Pours dark amber with a thin tan head. Malty aroma. Smooth mouth feel. Starts very malty like cereal then finishes with a slight bitterness.
3.4 Pullo @ Systembolaget. Keksiäkin on hieman joukossa. Suutuntuma on yllättävän mieto katkeroiden ollessa jo kadoksissa (yli 0,5 v vanhaa), jälkimaku on vähän jopa tyhjä. Hyvä tuoksu, mutta yllättävän pliisu maku. Ruis tuntuu selvästi, mutta katkerot eivät enää tasapainota ja jälkimakukin on sitä kautta hieman tyhjä.
3.7 330 ml bottle, pours red tinged gold with a bubbly white head. Aroma is sweet and sticky rye and cereal, caramel, pine and citrus. Body is medium, texture is sticky, medium sweet malt balanced with a hoppy bitter finish. Soft carbonation.
