3.6 Pours a cloudy dark brown with white head and nice lacing. A dark fruit aroma. Flavor of same: dark fruit (plum), sweet from candi sugar, caramel malt, a little coffee and spices. Medium body. Well done.
3.3 4 oz pour on draft as Spacebar. As Single Digit Dubbel. Dark brown with beige head. Aromas of caramel, toffee, light licorice. Tastes of dark fruit, caramel, light licorice. Medium body with a dry finish.
3.4 Pours a brown from a bottle. Aroma of fruity esters and banana. Similar flavor, no candi sugar but sweet caramel. Good beer.
3.1 12oz bottle at home - pours deep delicious brown color - low aroma - tastes malty with hints of dark fruit - a little harsh on the pallet in the aftertaste.
3.6 Pours a nice cola colored brown. Aromas of dark malts, fruit, and a touch of spice. Has flavors of chocolate, caramel, and a touch of wood.
3.9 Not sure I’m in tune with the Belgian dubbel style-ry, as that’s one of my favorites, and this bears little resemblance. However, it’s not bad, whatever it is. Pours a nice dark brown with thin tan head that eventually fades to a ring. Color is very nice, darker than any dubbel I’ve seen. Aroma is its weakest area - very flat, with just slight notes of dark fruit and malt sweetness. Nothing bad, just mild. Flavor is much better than the nose, with a medium-light body delivering some nice plums and raisins without ever being dry or astringent. Fairly smooth mouthfeel and decent finish make this okay. I’ll try again fresher, since I got this at end of season.
2.9 Deep brown/red, like an unfiltered apple cider. Sweet, yeasty, fruity nose...not too overpowering. Thick tan head that disappears with lacing after a few minutes. Spices, fruit, slight bittering hops dominate the taste. Nutmeg, weak cinnamon, banana, cloves. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy with mild carbonation.
3.8 17/II/16 - 12Fl. Oz. bottle @ home - BB: III/10/15 or 16 (smudged ink) (2016-163) Thanks to Tim DB for picking me up this bottle! Clear purple brown beer, creamy beige irregular head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: sweet malts, caramel, some banana, hint of mocha. MF: soft carbon, medium to full body. Taste: some alcohol, banana, lots of dried fruits, bit earthy, dark chocolate, soft bitterness. Aftertaste: lots of dried fruits, raisins, banana, caramel, soft sweetness, more chocolate.
2.9 Bottle pour into tulip pint glass. Aroma is strong dark fruit/apple smell with astringent alcohol like acetone or witch hazel. Appearance is deep red, almost like a sangria, with huge chunks of dark yeast floating about (forgot to withhold last bit in the bottle--d’oh!), no sparkle, quickly-fading 1/2 finger-width head to ring of off-white. No lacing. Taste is dark fruit moderate sweetness. Palate is medium bodied with sticky, thick texture, lively carbonation (stings a little) and dry finish. Overall, this certainly gets the fruity end of the taste scale but lack of complexity and deficits in aroma, appearance and palate drag it down.
3.4 on tap nut medium head goid malty note dry fruit fruity nocciola quasi scura bella schiuma media persistenza buona maltatura frutta secca nocciola fruttato
3.4 Bottle. Cloudy, dark amber with a very small off-white head. Aroma is spicy with hints of caramel. Taste is spicy and slightly sweet like brown sugar.
3.8 Interesting beer - parts of this are outstanding - armoa, color, and some of the taste... more of a winter warmer than dubbel...great aroma of dark fruits, toffee, brown sugar. dirty hazy dark brown sludgy pour. taste better as it warms and some great flavors - doesn’t all come together perfectly but worth a couple of bottles.
3.0 Definitely like a dubbel. Caramel, dried raisins/figs, sour yeast along with very mild hops bitterness. Fairly warming. Would be better with food as opposed to just on its own, as I tried it.
3.3 Copper pour from the bottle. Taste is grain, dough, mild citrus, malt and booze. Warm finish. Nice.
2.8 Bottle to pint glass. Brown in color with a tan head and little lacing. Aroma is toffee, caramel, and malts. Flavor is sour malts, toffee, and more rich caramel. Average mouthfeel and somewhat sticky. Ok beer.
3.1 Perfect vintage label! Great color and a nice flavor. A decent winter ale..smooth and no distinct flavor overpowers...nice blend.
3.4 Look is Dark dark brown. Off white head. Aroma is barley, cherry, plum. Doesn’t jump out at you. Taste is molasses, lots of malt,...aftertaste is burnt sugars. Feel is heavy, sticky. Good warming winter beer.
3.2 Bottle. Deep amber brownish pour, decent head retention, nose is malt, caramel, raisins. Mouth is bittersweet, medium-full, toffee, dried fruit, malt, yeasty spice, weird fuckin aftertaste. Meh.
3.0 Tap @ Jack Browns. Hazy brown with minimal head., not getting strong aroma- maybe some toffee and coriander. Sweet.
3.2 Bottle: Sweeter than I anticipated it being, nice full mouthfeel - was expecting more of the yeast character than I get from it.
3.2 Thick red pour, hardly any head. Nose is roasted malt. More sweet than bitter. Middle is strong toffee and faint dried fruit. Finish is still fairly sweet. Not bad, but also not an abbey ale.
3.2 On tap Unos. A full bodied brew with higher than average viscosity. Pours opaque ruby amber with a thin tan head. Sliky mouth feel with molassas under barley with bannana overtones and some spicy finish.
3.5 12 ounce bottle poured into a snifter. Pours a dark mahogany color with a grayish head of foam. The aroma has caramel, candi sugar, dates, cinnamon. The taste is mostly sweet, but does get dry and a little earthy upon the swallow. On the verge of ashy as well. Thicker mouthfeel. Moreso than I was expecting. Low to medium carbonation. Decent dubbel, but won’t knock anybody’s socks off.
3.1 Dark reddish-brown with a beige head. Aroma of dark fruits, caramel, toast, and peaches. Taste is sugary sweet; caramel with a tiny bit of fruit. On the thicker side of medium bodied with soft carbonation.
2.8 Nothing wrong with it but it’s a far cry from an actual Abbey Dubbel. Sweet and malty with just a touch of spice.
2.7 Smuttynose Winter Ale is good but not a standout. Dark reddish brown pour but only a light short-lived head. Aroma is light -- stone fruit notes. Taste is caramel and stone fruit with a slight alcohol burn on the back end. Not complex at all. Smuttynose Winter Ale isn’t bad but there are better choices in this category.
3.7 Aroma is malts, fruit/dark fruit and bread. The flavor is dark fruit, oak/funk, a hint of tobacco and a tart/acidic finish.
2.4 12 oz bottle, best by 5/11/15 Clear mahogany, thin tan head, no retention, no lace. Caramel malt and Belgian yeast aroma, Flavor is sweet, caramel malt, mild spicy hop bitterness.
3.6 Pours a dark mahogany color with a foamy taupe colored head. Notes of candi sugar, bubble gum, toffee, and dark fruits. Bit thin
3.4 Dark pour from draft at beer bistro. Off white head. Fruity and blackberry aroma. Taste is kind of sweet but not overly for this style. Liked it much more than expected
