3.9 Talk about pretty random. Sampled this at DLD2010. Dark rich amber/red pour with an off white head. Sweet, malty aroma, caramel, toffee, wood. Big, sweet fruit flavor, caramel, toffee, sherry. Oak, vanilla. Slick mouthfeel. Pretty bad ass brew to get to try.
3.9 Clear red-brown pour with lots of bubbles and a tan head. A bit of haze throughout the glass. I did manage to pour without getting too much yeast into the glass. Very aromatic with nutty caramel malts. Cherry and fruit hints. Slightly sour fruity cherry flavor. Nice caramel and chcolate malt backbone. Hints of roast and coffee. Bitter hop finish.
3.9 Courtesy of Puzzl bottle from braketz place haul. Whiskey alcohol aroma hits the nose like you sprayed it with a nasal spray device. Also some dark fruit aroma along with caramel malt. Dark red body with with beige/mustard colored head. Flavor was thick blend of fruits, toffee, and alcohol. Smooth on the palate and enjoyable beer.
3.8 A bottle I got from Immy a while back. Poured a nice amber color with a foamy, off-white head. The aroma had a surprising bit of hops left in it along with mountains of sweet malts. The flavor is citrus hops with light spice and is dominated by malt. A welcome bit of warming alcohol noted towards the end. Wish I had some more.
4.1 Pours an attractive murky reddish brown, persistent tan head. The aroma is gorgeous, fruit, plums, malts, slight booziness (like bourbon or whiskey), toffee. The flavor is fruity, bready, cinnamon, booze again. Very nice. the palate is a slight warming from booze, and a sweet fruit taste left behind. Beautiful. The mouthfeel is medium to slightly thick, oily. This style is not available often enough. This is a great representation of a great style.
4.0 Corked and caged 750 mL bottle from Whole Foods Market Arlington, VA. Pours a deep strawberry red color with a large head. Good head retention and lacing. Malty aroma with toffee and caramel as well as spicy and bready notes. Taste is bread, toffee, big spicy notes and a hoppy finish. A little bit of chocolate as well and very, very faint port-like oxidation notes. Full bodied. Very nice.
3.7 I must have had this 3 times now. Pours a brown amber body with a tan head. Spicy notes, cinnamon and woody malty dark fruit. Chewy and full with a mild warming. Damp woody fruit and a sweet tea note. Nice.
3.6 Bottle at the Cuvee de Castleton release at Captain Lawrence. Pours a light hazy brow with a thin beige head. Malt, plums, and caramel on the nose. Medium bodied and chock full of plum and prune flavors.
3.9 Another awesome beer shared by footbalm. 750 ml bottle. Pours a murky brown color with a big tan head. The aroma is very rich; cinnamon and apples, yeast, something woody almost bourbon like. The flavor is similar; rich dry fruity malts, woody bourbon, yeast, dark fruit and nutty flavors. A very nice Old Ale. Not super sweet, more of a musty flavor. Excellent.
3.5 If I’m not mistaken, I have moejuck to thank for this one. Received in a trade well over a year ago, and kept it hidden for awhile. Decided to crack it open tonight and after drinking the 750ml bottle, I’ve become fairly intimate with Southampton. The beer pours out medium amber color (more orange than brown though) with a medium sized 2", creamy off-white head. The staying power of the head was nice, and although it took me a good while to finish the bottle, the head stayed with me like a good friend throughout. Aroma is incredibly flowery, with notes of star jasmine, wet dirt, caramel, rum raisins and a touch woody. Some oxidation seems to benefit this beer, as it somehow keeps everything together. Notes of caramel, tobacco, woody hops, cherry, cognac and figs all show up in one form or another during my stay with Southampton. Mouthfeel was really small. Just no real presence. Finish was nice, as it reminded me of a small barleywine.
3.7 750 ml corked and caged...Pours a deep ruddy ruby hue. Steady carbonation, mostly lasting, creamy beige head, sticky lacing. Earthy, dark fruit, rusty nose. Solid malts, toffee, dark dried fruit, leather, floral notes. Light to medium bodied, silky smooth, earthy through the finish. Nice...
3.8 750 mL cork and cage. pours hazy brown with big bubbly head. aroma is sweet caramel with roasted tones and fig. mouthful is robust with a hint of some bourbon and dried fruit. held up well.
3.2 Bottle thanks to Drewbeerme. Cloudy, ruby color with large, off-white head. Aroma is cardboard, caramel, a little mollases, nuttiness, dark fruit. Flavor is quite similar with a little less cardboard but more port oxidation, nuttiness is quite prominent past that with caramel. Medium body with light carbonation. I could see where this used to be but it is past its prime.
4.2 [Bottle] Pours dark ruby with a huge lingering, rocky, light tan head. The aroma has dark fruits, brown sugar, walnut, and a good deal of yeast. The taste is very bready, with some dark fruits, a little alcohol, light bitterness, plums, prunes, walnut again, and a little grape. Medium-thick mouthfeel, smooth. Good finish that contains yeast, malt, dark fruits and some walnut. Overall there is nothing over-the-top here. It is just an outstanding, balanced beer that does a great job with the dark fruit and yeast. Subtle, but great.
3.3 Bottle shared by Hophead22. Pours a cloudy reddish brown with no head. This was the last taste of the day so my notes suck and I don’t remember much, but it did have a lightly sweet aroma with a mellow caramel malt character, medium to full bodied, and moderate carbonation. Maybe I’m not being fair to this one, but it just seemed average.
3.6 750ml bottle from goryshkewych. Hazy copper color. Not much of an aroma. Slight sweetness, but not much else. Pretty good brew, but not great.
3.6 i remember being excited about this, southampton is a cool little brewery ... lots of caramel and brown sugars... in nose and mouth .. goes down like a champ but maybe not the most complex of old ales..
4.0 Bottle, at LCRBM 2008, ’s Hertogenbosch, Netherlands Brown to amber, quite clear body. Off-white head. Intense, sweet aroma of flowers, wine, malts and some smoke. Lightly malty (caramel) intense flavour: moderately sweet, moderately bitter. Nice floral hints.

3.7 Pours dark red brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of caramel malt, a bit hidden. Flavor starts out fruity and moves to malty, then finishes very roasty. Clean, smooth, and well made.
3.9 Pours a dark copper with a decent beige head. Mildly sweet caramel aroma with a little grassiness. Strong sweet grape flavor initially that turns plumish with a heavy, sweet, malt and a more roasted earthy character later on. Very smooth and dignified. Very deep palate with a little dry feeling on the finish.
3.7 Been saving this but finally lost my will power. Hazy dark brown with large beige head and malty nut aroma. Medium bodied but solid bitter flavor followed by sweet malty notes and an a substantial alcohol burn.
3.8 750ml bottle-pours a foamy tan head and cloudy brown color. Aroma is sweet medium malt-brown sugar, dark fruit-raisin, some earthy (English) hops. Taste is sweet medium malt-brown sugar, dark fruit-raisin, offset by an herbal/spicy hops. Medium body. Good effervescence. Full of taste, like an Imperial Old Ale. Although not my taste, enjoyable. Thanks to jwc215 for sharing. 120318-tks dmac
3.9 [Bottle] shared by Guerde. Pours a hazy caramel with ruby highlights and a medium tan head. Aroma is mainly figs with some raisins and brown sugar. Quite sweet on the nose. Flavor is pretty much the same as the aroma, and a little bit coarse from too much carbonation. A touch chalky and dry on the finish.
3.7 Copper in color with a medium tan head. Aroma is of sweet malts, caramel, and brown suger. Flavor is of toffee, caramel, and raisins with a slight alcohol warmth.
3.8 Pours hazy amber brown, dark fruits, caramel, malty, molasses, little spices.
3.8 Pours ruddy brown with decent tan head. Nose is full of toffee, dried fruit and caramel. Same in the flavor with a very nice finish and smooth mouthfeel.
