Our Southampton Saison is a faithful rendition of this classic "farmhouse" style ale. Originally brewed for consumption during the summer months, its slight tartness and intense fruitness make it a most refreshing drink anytime of year.

3.62009 GABF, Friday. One of the best Southamptons I’ve had. This one achieves complexity through the use of Brett and herbal, balanced hops. Palate stays smooth all the way through to a creamy and soft finish. Delicate, but not boring. Not sweet nor bitter, which I appreciate for the style.
3.9Two bottles recently. 03 and 05. Both consumed in 09. Similar profiles. Aroma is sweet with faint spice and yeast with a little twang to it. Flavor is bright and mellow spice and pepper with citrus and yeast. Really good.
4.02005 Bottle (Labeled on Cage):
Nice hazy orange coloured body with a dense white head that fades fast. Aroma of hay, grass, yeast ,wheat, coriander seed and some mild oranges. Medium-bodied; Assertive bready wheat and yeast in the taste with some fruit, alcohol and pungent acidic flavours coming out. Aftertaste has some nice refreshing flavours with citrus and coriander seed the most common. Overall, a good saison, definitely one to sample - if you can find it! I sampled this 75 cL bottle purchased from Beers of the World in Rochester, New York back in 2005/2006? , sampled on the Eastern Shore of Virginia on 06-September-2009 after plentiful amounts of resting time.
3.7Bottle from 03 that one of the SH guys was pouring from at their booth at BCTC. Pours a light gold with a thin white head. Light lemony fruit aromas. Crisp and light with some nice caramel and plum tones, finishing clean and dry.
3.9Pours a slightly darker hay color with white head. Spicy aftertaste mingled with a rose undertone and aroma. Great thirst quenching flavor. Prefer this to the Saison Dupont and wasn’t expecting to.
3.9Another old rating. Aroma was some belgian and yeastiness. Flavor was smooth but maybe a little oxidized. I like all southampton saisons.
4.2Golden-orange in colour with a long lasting white head, excellent lacing. The aroma is of apples, citrus, lots of yeast, brett, must with some light spice. The flavour is yeasty, some apples, some spice, lots of brett, quite musty. Dry mouthfeel, medium body, medium/high carbonation. Finishes lightly bitter, sweet, lingering.
Very good but I can see that the end is near for this one. Starting to thin out over the past 3 years but still holding up well.
750ml bottle from Beers Of The World in Rochester, New York.
Opened on July 5, 2008.
No date (Southampton Bottling).
3.1A golden ale woith a thick white head, effervescent. A pleasant fruity ester aroma, herbal, and nice. In mouth, a crisp malt, oxidized, a bit of herbs, thye. Shows its age. Bought at BOTW, one year old.
3.9750ml caged&corked bottle shared with ealdent. Pours a deep, hazy yellow/gold with a very thick white head. The aroma is excellent for a farmhouse: some malts, some yeast, some must, some grassiness. The flavor follows the aroma: a light amount of residual malt sweetness, breadiness, cry and crisp grassy bitterness, and some pleasant yeasty qualities. The finish is dry with a nice bit of spicy, peppery phenols and spicy, grassy hop bitterness. The mouthfeel is very well carbonated giving it a spritzy and light body. Overall, a fantastic saison - just as great as any authentic version from Belgium. Delicious.
4.2dede main en la casa del aleman
estilo belga pero con menos azucar y mas facil de beber.
rica y se puede repetir varias veces
4.0Bottle generously donated to our bathtub soiree, GABF 2007. 2005 vintage. Big foamy fluffy head is white and sits above a hazy orange beer. Smell is lively with light yeast effervescence; you can feel the carbon dioxide being released into your nose. White pepper at first and a little lambic-ish acidity from the yeast. Middle is citric melon with darker yeasty qualities, finishing into a light honeydew, dry white pepper, cardamom, and other dry spices. Very nice texture, and a nice balance of the citric fruity aspects and the yeasty, spicy ones: the yeastiness doesn’t swallow the freshness, but it isn’t full-juicy and has a nice sophistication. Nice beer.
4.1bottle. golden/orange pour with annoying white foamy head. lacing. nice aroma that puts a smile on the face. fruity, fig and apricot, great yeast and spice, sweet malts, earthy. medium body. dry peppery finish. lively palate up front a result of carbonation. solid malt backbone. mild earthiness. Excellent.
3.4Bottle. Pours a pale golden yellow with a huge white head and good lacing. Very carbonated. aroma of yeast, fruit, mustiness, and light spices. Flavor is grainy malts, fruit, bread notes, and has a slight tartness. Light bodied with a dry malty finish.
4.3750 ML Bottle at the SPH Brewpub. Drank in 2005. Pour was cloudy dark brown with an average head, white. Aroma is that of spices, and fruit, very reminiscent of autumn, but not quite that of a harvest ale. Taste is the same, and very smooth indeed!
4.3In short: A crisp and classic American take on the Saison style. Excellent.
How: (backlog) A few times at tasting sessions
The look: cloudy golden body with a medium white head.
In long: Spices and dried citrus fruits on the nose. Rather yeasty, crisp and a bit citric with some dry grass, orange zest and a little spicy touch. Pleasant tartness/acidity, just light enough to be refreshing without being aggressive. Lively carbonation. Skimpy notes but twice I had the opportunity to have this regular Saison and its Deluxe replacement in the same tasting session and both times I found the regular Saison far superior and truer to the style. Why Southampton replaced this excellent Saison with the very good but inferior Deluxe is to me as much as a mystery as why don’t sheeps shrink when it rains.
3.12005 bottle corked and caged poured a very hazy caramel brown in color with a two finger head on the initial pour melting back to become a thin layer of white foam. aroma is light with yeast, fruit, light spice, and apple peels. mouth feel is medium light with decent carbination. flavor has yeasty bread notes, spice, some straw, and does have a mineral like taste. not sure if this aged so well, has some funky bitterness at the end. the style of beer that is usually in my book better fresh and crisp but i came across it and thought i would give it a try.
3.2Bright yellow. White airy head. Nice fruity aroma. Medium body. Stinging taste on the tongue. Not smooth, harsh. Creamy and fills the mouth.
4.1750 ml bottle thanks to boboski. Nice earthy aromas. Some spice in there when you take a nice long sniff. Similar flavor with some citrus-like fruit in between. Excellent
3.9Tap @ Blind Tiger. Pours a straw-gold color with a quickly-dissipating head. Aroma is light fruit, yeast, grassy hops. Taste is heavy Belgian yeast up front, dissolving into fruit and a sharp pepper aftertaste. The beer was very smooth, though it might be nearing the end of the line (especially considering it wasn’t aged in a bottle). Overall, I liked.
3.5Bottle pours a lightly hazy golden. Soft light malt aroma. Very light spiciness. Warm malty pale flavor. Butttery and smooth. Subtle and pleasant. Terrific example of a style that is not my fav.
Thanks Chad.
3.7i guess i liked this one a lot, but can’t tell you why exactly. tasted very smooth with wild tones, easy drinker but not a top beer. only thing of note is the crazy carbonation which foams very quicky.
3.5Bottle sampled. Pours hazy copper with a large white head. Aroma of spices, belgian yeast, slight fruit, sweetness, and grassy hops. The flavor is sweet, spicey, fruit, citrus, and finishes bitter. Good brew.
4.0Cloudy yellow pour, large head, eathy aroma, wheat, funk, slight tartness, very, very nice example, especially for an american brew. This style is becoming my favorite I think.
4.02005 vintage shared by Chuck. The beer pours to a very hazy golden straw colored body with a nice white head. The aroma is nice lemons, lemongrass, and doughy bread. The flavor is minerals, lemons, grassy hops, and is slightly yeasty. Refreshing. The palate is refreshing and mineral laden. Medium-light body.
3.705 vintage
Off yellowish colored pour lots of visable carbonation and a monster white thick head w/ some great lacing. Heavily fruity aroma lots of orange peel, lemon grass, some sweet sugars, and breads. Num Num aroma. Palate is well coated, fairly avg. Flavor is sweet breads, yeasts, some corriander, orange peel, hints of grass. Nice.
4.3Bottle. Cloudy, fire-smoke golden color. 1" foam, evaporating quickly. Faintly yeasty, bark-like scent. Dry initial taste with throaty kick of bread, grain. Exquisite. Provided suprise and much joy to my mouth and body.
3.92005 Bottle; Nose of some tartness, yeast,,and light spices; hazy urine colored with a small white head; flavor has a light horse blanket, cloves, nutmeg, and corriander, and some grainy breadiness. Very good saison, I should have shared it with Odeed, this is one he might have tolerated!
3.9From a caged corked 750 ml. bottle with a short blurb on the back label, no bottling/freshness date I could find, sampled at cellar temperature in a chalice.
Poured a hazy orangey golden with a tight, creamy, foamy white head, good retention, a fair amount of laced sticking.
Aromas of earthy, bready yeast, herbal spices, lemons and oranges, and sweet grainy malts.
Good, airy carbonation to keep things light and a crisp, dryish, smooth light bodied mouthfeel.
Nice, pleasant saison taste, earthy, spicy yeast, softly tart lemons and orange zest, dry herbs and a little dirty leafiness, sweet, grainy malts in the background that mixes with the alcohol, a slow warmth in the palate and a dry, spicy, herbal, malty finish.
Good, easy lingering drinkability, another nice ale in the 750 series.
4.0PA bottling. Medium to deep gold, very nice head. Aroma is floral perfume, orange blossom, and a hint of spice and bread, very nice. Bready malts are the start, moving slowly into a floral hop finish with some orange undertones. A bit of a perfume note as well. This is a very nicely made saison, and one of the better brews in my opinon from their contract brewed series.
3.7(750ml bottle, 2005 vintage) Pours a cloudy golden body with a large white head. Aroma of lemon, mustiness, and light florals. Flavor of yeast, citrus, hops, and some sourness.
