Southern Star Buried Hatchet Stout

Southern Star Buried Hatchet Stout

You hold in your hand a stout for stout lovers. Buried Hatchet is brewed with a large quantity of brown malt reminiscent of a traditional pre-Industrial Revolution malt profile. This stout is full of robust, roasted flavors which intermingle with a bittersweet creaminess that concludes to a perfect, warming finish. [Moving from stout to RIS given the high abv above 8% -GT2]

3.6 APPEARANCE- Pours very black with a great head with fine foam. NOSE- Incan smell the deep roasty notes right away. FLAVOR- great touch of bitter flavor immediately followed with a strong roasty finish that stays on my palate for quite a while. Extremely nice balance.
3.1 Can thanks to Zinister. Poured brown with min off white head. Aroma choco malt. Light carb med body. Light roast malt taste.
3.3 Pours a cloudy dark caramel color with a short-lived khaki head. Dark malt and cream on the nose. Nice balance among the creaminess, the the dark fruit, the dark malt, and the coffee. Extraordinarily drinkable impy stout.
3.0 Can. Head is initially small, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is dark brown to black. Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate syrup, caramel, roasted nuts), with notes of vanilla, candy sugar, and marshmallow. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, watery/syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, moderately alcoholic. A very candyish example...lots of caramel and chocolate syrup, very little roast. Not unpleasant but definitely geared towards folks with a sweet tooth.
4.0 12 oz can at Brick House Tavern and Tap with Patty. Dark brown pour, thick khaki colored head, nice lacing. Aroma of chocolate, coffee and roasted malts. Bold rich flavor with some of the same coffee and chocolate shining through and a nice roasty essence at the back end. Mouthfeel has a nice chalkiness to it. ABV hidden well.
3.3 Stout in a can @ 8.5%. A little boozy up front with a harsh finish. Lingering bitter and dark chocolate flavors.
3.6 Anctient can shared by Morten in the line for Blåbær Release 2015. Pours a dark brown with a small, tan head. Aroma has toast, roast, caramel, chocolate, coffee, popcorn. Taste is roasty bitter and sweet. Roasted hazelnuts and almonds. High carbonation and a light body.
4.0 Nice Roasty aroma. Black color w/slight red color. Little head & lacing. Nice roasty flavor, w/pleasant bitterness. Full bodied. Overall, a very tasty stout!
3.5 Can in line for blåbær. Pours brown with a beige head. Aroma of coffee, nuts, toffee, hazelnuts, roasted almonds, caramel and a bit thin smelling overall. The taste has those same notes and is rather roasted and sweet. Thin mouthfeel but still ok.
3.4 Can in line for Blåbær ’15. Brownish pour with a tiny head. Toasted nuts, sweet malts, caramel and some savory notes.
3.0 12oz can (courtesy of Headbanger) poured into a Snifter at 41°. It’s a deep near black brown with good carbonation and a tight tan head. Aroma is roasted malts with a hint of smoke. Body is full with a lightly sharp mouth feel. Flavor is deeply roasted malts, coffee and dark chocolate. After taste is dry with a mild bitterness. Overall its a good stout but it seems a little light for an Imperial.
3.5 pours brown with a thin off white head. cold coffee, molasses and nutmeg aroma. taste is quite toasty and has notes of bitter chocolate, cold coffee, and some wet leaves. finish is bitter but with some desserty richness.
3.5 Clear dark ruby, brown lacing foam head. Strong coffee aroma, coffee taste, chocolate tones. Nice beer. (Houston 201505)

3.8 12oz can 4/2/15 (Courtesy of TerryR)-38° in Trappist Glass-Pours black with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, and chocolate. Taste of the same with more coffee and chocolate on the back end. This full bodied brew is well balanced and quite tasty.
3.9 Pours very dark with a thin, dissipating head. Roasty, roasty, roasty. Just enough bitter. One of my go to beers.
3.2 Sampled on draught at Moses Rose’s Bar in San Antonio. Very dark brown/black colour with a tan head. Aromas of roasted malt and coffee. The taste is rather sweet and creamy and has a very strong hint of coffee. Not particularly bitter. A little thin and watery (surprisingly, given the ABV), but fairly drinkable.
3.8 Pours dark, thick creamy with a small head. The beer has a sweet, malty aroma. Taste is a blend of sweet and creamy with a full body and a satisfying finish.
3.7 It’s dark like motor oil. The chocolate aroma hits you immediately. This brew has a smooth rich chocolatey flavor with a good roasted taste.
2.9 Poured feom can, veey dark, small head, weaker aroma with bitter smell, strin coffee wirh bitter chocolate, taste better after multiple beera, but still little to bitter
3.9 Can picked up from total wine jax, dark motor oil pour, slim khaki head. Strong espresso, bittered chocolate, light black licorice. Full body, high viscosity, major boost.
3.8 Can pour opaque dark brown with purple hue. Nose coffee and roast mild dark fruit. Taste nice roast, light chocolate and sweet malt. Mild roasted finish.
3.4 Poured from a can. Thick, dark brown body with a light foamy brown head. The aroma is...stouty, I suppose. The flavor is bittersweet, and leaves something to be desired. There's something off I can't quite put my finger on. Not bad, but not a work of genius either.
3.6 Draft. Dark brown color, beige head. Aroma has coffee, cocoa, vanilla. Taste is bittersweet cocoa, burnt toast. Decent.
3.7 Pours black into a mason jar from can with a cloudy white thin head. Aroma is heavily roasted malts. Taste is very sweet with some hints of roasted flavors like coffee. Tiny bit or chocolate . Mouthfeel is a bit thick with gentle carbonation
3.7 Canned. Pours a pitch black color with a small tan head. Aroma is lots of roasted malts and chocolate. Little bit of coffee. Flavor is similar. Roasted malts and chocolate dominate. Coffee bitterness in the finish. Body is a LITTLE weak for such a strong Stout. But overall very nice. No booziness at all for such a strong Stout.
3.3 Road beer - can straight to the dome. I would imagine this would look deep brown, hopefully it would have a good head too. Roasty, somewhat earthy, some caramel, lightly grassy, light cocoa and doughy aroma. Taste is light chocolate, some coffee, heavy brown sugar, earthy, kind of twangy and a weird toasted bread note that seems to linger. Medium body with high carboantion. Run of the mill.
4.1 Jet black pour with a tan head. Malty, roasted notes, dark chocolate, coffee, burnt sugar. Good on nitro. Update from can: mouthfeel is really creamy, head is white (I prefer dark tan with stouts) but the aroma and taste is amazing.
5.0 We’ve been buying half barrels of this fabulous stout (at the same price I might add) every 3 months for 4 years now! No ... we’re not a commercial enterprise, it’s just us 2, at home with our friends, loving the smooth bready satisfying completeness of this outstanding stout. It’s a terrific end of the workday treat and a weekend "get relaxed" brew! We’ve tried so many stouts over the years I can’t count them and BH outshines them all!! Our opinion of course. If you like stouts, give this a try, you’ll undoubtedly fall in love like we did! Thank you SS!!!!
3.3 Can from a trade split 2 ways. Fridge is 44F in stemware. here. dark chocolate, 2 finger head, light and easy to see through in the light. Nose is bursting with chocolate and some cedar chips / mulch. Taste is roasty, creamy mouthfeel, some pistachio and walnuts and wood with a chocolatey finish. not terrible.
