Southern Tier 2XMAS

Southern Tier 2XMAS

Swedish flags are a fairly common sight in our part of the country. Holiday parties often have warm concoctions of spices and booze at the ready to knock the ice off of toes while raising spirits. We were inspired by a “Glögg” party, deciding on the spot to brew a beer that pays tribute to this Nordic tradition.

2XMAS ale combines traditional brewing ingredients with figs, orange peels, cardamom, cinnamon, clove and ginger root. It’s a holiday addition to the 2X line and another reason to toast to the season, but unlike Glögg, we recommend serving this one chilled.

3.8 (Tap) clear, very bright orange amber colour with a small white head; aroma of spice; balanced flavour with a long, light bitter finish
2.9 Bottle pour. Aroma of juniper, sugar cookies and orange peel. Tastes like gin because of the juniper. Not much sweetness which I was expecting from the fig. Only getting a little of the cardamom.
3.2 Bottle. Translucent dark coppery body, thin off-white head. Light nose, ginger and other spices. Interesting and surprising flavor profile, with a prominent bitter spiciness imparted by the cloves, cardamom, ginger, and cinnamon, anchored by a soft, sweet, velvety malt backdrop. I wouldn't sit down for more than one or two of these at a time, but it's pleasant for a change of pace.
3.5 Pours a deep copper color with a thin tan head. The aroma was a spicy cinnamon and the taste was kind of a clove. Not too bad.
2.7 bottle. Poured dark amber with a slim off-white head. Spicy aroma of cardamom and ginger. Medium bodied, prickly carbonation, dry astringent finish. Flavour is full of kitchen pantry spices, peppery and tart and herbal.
3.6 Poured from bottle caramel amber with a tan head. Aromas of spices caramel toffee and dark fruit. Taste is spices caramel malt toffee and brown sugar.
3.4 12 oz bottle. Huge spice scents with ginger dominating. Pours a pretty clear brown with tinges of red and an off-white head that is gone quickly. Slight lacing. Complex spice tastes with big ginger and sweet from the fig paste, cinnamon comes through as well very reminscent of a Gluhwien or mulled cider. Almost want to heat it up. Smooth moutfeel with some fizziness and a clear hops finish. Really holds a lot together well and gives strong memorable tastes of the season.
3.0 Decent all the way around!
3.9 12 oz. bottle. Pours a nice reddish hue. Aroma has some spice, some sweet and some alcohol. Medium body. Flavor is sweet from the malt at first, then the holiday spices come through. Finish is more of the same and a touch of the orange cones through especially as it warms. Well done!
3.4 Pours ruby amber with a thick, dense head. Aroma is cinnamon, orange and ginger. Taste is orange/citrus and cinnamon, warming to ginger and clove. Finish is smooth spice. A pretty good spiced ale.
3.8 ABV- 8.0 Double Spiced Ale. .Appearance: Deep red, frothy tan head. Some subtle carbonation visible. .Aroma: Heavy spice - cloves, cinnamon, ginger. Orange peel, fig. .Taste: Upfront clove, nutmeg, cinnamon. Ginger spice, malt sweetness. Powerful spice dominating most of the flavor. .Mouthfeel: Medium body, full, rich, slight creaminess. .Overall: B- .Bottom Line: This one is simple, it is exactly what it says on the bottle. A double ale brewed with an array of spices. You'll get the spice twice. Definitely on the noise and you certainly will taste it, add in a very good palate and you have yourself a solid beer. This beer does what it set out to do, put some Christmas spirit in a bottle. 2x.
4.6 Poured from the tap into a pint glass. The appearance is a murky brown color with a small white head. The aroma is cinnamon, all spice and sweet additionals. The taste mirrors the nose. an excellent winter warmer.
3.0 Bottle. It poured a murky brown color witha thin off-white head. The aroma was allspice with some dark fruit notes on the tongue. It has a thick mouthfeel and an overall warming sensation. Not bad, but I probably need to try this again when it is cooler.
3.3 Deep reddish brown, thin tan head. Cardamom, allspice, clove, ginger, molasses, orange, dark roasted malt. Medium heavy sweet and bitter, medium tart. Spicy and fruity - they did a pretty good job of imitating glogg.
2.1 Cloudy amber gold pour with one to two fingers of sandy white head. Nose and flavor are an absolute spice-affront to the sense. Bitter and astringent dry spices with warming alcohol and some malt sweetness. You know EXACTLY what this tastes like...
3.6 Chestnut color with a light tan colored, small and slowly diminishing head. Spicy aromas, with nutmeg, cinnamon, allspice, juniper, and orange zest. Hints of toasted malt in the backdrop. Initial pale and toasted malt sweetness is quickly overpowered by the spices. Some toffee and caramel work their way back in near the finish. Nearly burning linger from what seems to be ginger. I like it as a holiday sipping sort of brew. 12/12
3.1 Aroma citrus, alcohol, clove, spices, Appearance amber, hazy, cloudy, minimal head, tan foam, Taste medium sweetness, Palate medium body, Overall they nailed the holiday spirit in this beer. Lots of spice with hints of orange peel. Not my type of beer so my raiting is low for that reason. It’s still a good beer from a good brewery. I would not suggest this beer to a friend.
3.8 Somewhat muted holiday spice brew. Not great, but not bad. Hint of solvent. Good body. Good finish.
4.4 Bottle from Whole Foods Market Fair Lakes Aroma: citrus, spices, caramel Appearance: clear amber with a tan head Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: medium body, creamy, average carbonation, long finish, Tasty
3.7 Pours reddish amber with a quick off white head. Nose is bread and nutmeg with a little rosemary. Flavor is a blast of sweet fruit against a very festive and strong blend of spices. Very potent and unique. Finish is semi spicy and sticky. Just wow, what a one of a kind beer.
3.0 Bottle from Beer Trappe. Pours a deep copper. Aroma of spice and malt. Well balanced.
4.0 Unique sweet smell...very good...festive..taste is like light dark malts and orange peel, figs are definitely present...decent complexity and flavor...bold...cinnamon finish...in Syracuse for 15th high school reunion
3.9 Cinnamon and cherry aroma, reddish brown color, clear. Low head retention. Full body with chewy malt texture. Clove overpowers flavor, with dried fruit, cinnamon, and toffee malt. Slow supper in a cold afternoon.
3.6 A solid seasonal beer, lightly spiced and really smooth for the high alcohol content.
3.2 Pours a semi clear medium caramel with a thin tan ring. Strong aroma of fall spices and sweet cinnamon. Medium body with some lacing. Tastes of dark fruits with a variety of spices. Not harsh or bitter but the spice mixture isn?t that enjoyable. Too much of a nutmeg or allspice flavoring. I?ve had worse but I?ve also had better.
4.1 Bottle. Colour...mostly clear amber with a thin ecru head. Nose...big spice and fruit, especially dates and dark raisins, with carrot cake and allspice. Palate... quite the sweet spice assault up front and then a big hit of pepper ( white pepper). The mid palate has cola galore and loads of sailor jack. The finish is long and peppery.
3.6 Draft at Grapevine. Hazy amber brown color. Aroma of light spice on a burnt caramel background with a bit of boozed. Taste is lightly spiced herbal caramel. Nice.
3.5 BB Backlog, Bottle. Pours an orange red shade. Aroma is spice, toast, gingerbread. All kind of christmas cookie notes in this one, some dough, cinnamon, and other nutmeg type spicing. Body is medium. Interesting beer from ST.
3.9 Aromas of cranberries, baking spices, and banana bread. Taste is light toffee and caramel, banana bread, and cinnamon and sugar spices. Some cranberry is in there too.
3.8 Brown pour, thin white head. Aroma of cinnamon, clove, spice. Flavor is more clove, it’s a good winter beer. Very solid and it captures the season.
