Southern Tier 2XPRESSO

Southern Tier 2XPRESSO

Espresso is a drink that is not for the faint of heart. Pulling a perfect shot is as much a science as it is an art form. Come to think of it, the same can be said for brewing beer. Of course, both coffee and beer have certain, shall we say ‘uplifting’ qualities. Combine the two is a natural progression.

Our 2xStout is considered by many to be a perfect milk stout. We started with that in mind, and added espresso beans and lemon peels for a true Italian style pick-me-up. The result is a stout so black, so rich, so creamy, it’d be at home in a café along a cobblestone street in some neighborhood in Rome. Yet, it’s beer.

3.4 Bottled. Poured near black with a short-lived beige head. The aroma picked up sweeter cocoa and coffee notes with accents of charred biscuits and vanilla. The flavor found similar, with emphasis on the coffee (especially on the back-end).. touches of citrus around.. finished mostly sweet with some nice bitter coffee and bright citrus accents. Medium-bodied with a good feel and flow on the palate. a touch too sweet and heavy-handed, but aiight.
3.5 12 oz. bottle. If your stomach can’t handle lactose, be careful with this bad boy! I can smell the lactose sugar mixed with charred espresso bean. Milk chocolate noticeable. The body and mouthfeel are nice, creamy texture with medium body. It also shows some very mild bitterness to help with the over the top sweetness. I’m guessing the lemon peel is giving the bitter element. Good for sure but not really “Top Tier” Overall, still well worth a pint.
3.9 Black color . Thin , beige head. Aroma оf good coffee and roasted malt . I'd say it's everything but sweet . Coffee, chocolate and pleasant roasted bitterness in taste.
4.4 Aroma: coffee, roasty, chocolate Appearance: black with a brown head Taste: coffee, lightly sour, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, long finish, Delicious
3.8 Perhaps i’ve grown tired of the coffee/stout combo, as I enjoy both separately. This just bores me. ST 2x Milk Stout is fantastic stuff, but the additional coffee flavors detract in my opinion. Fortunately I cannot taste any lemon unless in the form of additional bitter rind. This brew pours near-black with minimal head that fades to nothing. Aroma is the best part by far, with the lactose sweet combining with the roasty malt and coffee bean aroma. Flavor is fairly strong with the roast of barley and the bitterness of the beans more than offsetting the lactose. Finish is somewhat dry with lingering bitter. Not awful, I’d just rather have a straight-up milk stout.
3.8 Poured from a tap. Dark brown color, medium tan head. Light sweet malt aroma. Medium body with a sweet malt and vanilla flavor and medium finish.
3.6 pours unclear light brown with a small off-white/burnt orange cap offering minimal retention and lacing. milk chocolate-plenty, powdery cacao, layers of burnt caramel, sweet coffee - demerara pinch; faintest grain acidity, slightly acrid though, hint of smokiness, sweetened cranberries, clean. moderate carbonation, medium body - oily; smooth, semi-sweet chocolatey-coffee finish. sweetish. well integrated coffee. pretty nice coffee-chocolate stout.
2.3 Bottled. Black body, small light brown head. The aroma is old coffee, quite weak. The taste is ridiculously overblown, almost doesn’t taste like a beer.
3.7 Bottled, dark brown color, thin foam, aroma is roast and chocolate, flavor is roasty bitter dark chocolates, nice creamy bitter finish
3.4 Bottle (12 oz) at home. Bought at Craft Beer Cellar Waterbury a few months ago already. Very dark brown - nearly black - with a medium beige head that quickly recess to a small bubbly beige head leaving little to no lacing. Aroma is of vegetal coffee, lactose sweetness, cocoa powder, vanilla notes and caramel. Taste is quite sweet which is a sweet stout from Southern Tier, there’s vegetal coffee presence, cocoa powder, lactose sweetness, vanilla notes, caramel and mild coffee bitterness. Medium body. Moderate to medium carbonation. Sweet finish. A bit better and less cloying than expected but still Southern Tier-esque and hard to drink in anything other than small portions. Ok.
4.5 Really great stout with the Expresso adds a nice flavor. It advertises a hint of orange, did not taste. Overall a fine stout.
3.4 Pored a dark brown with a beige head. Aroma was of green pepper and roast. Flavor similar, a bit more coffee shows up. A bit thin.
3.6 Draft. Small tan head atop dark brown body. Aroma is moderately sweet, coffee, cream, some bittersweet chocolate, earthy. Taste is moderately sweet, coffee, grapefruit/earthy, light cream. Medium body, some creaminess.
3.9 Beer Club bottle. Pours black with thin tan head. Roast coffee and hops to the nose. Sweet milk, coffee, and citrus to taste. Good beer.
3.9 Pours black into a snifter. Mocha head with medium retention recedes to hug rim. Soy and licorice aromas. Dark chocolate and soy upfront turning to charred licorice in the medium length finish.
3.4 12 oz bottle served in a Belgian snifter after some warming. Pours near black and nearly opaque with a skimpy, short-lived head that does manage to leave some spots of lacing. The seemingly odd addition of lemon peel makes this distinctive, particularly in the aroma where it is quite evident. In tasting, the lemon [eel is more subtle and blends surprisingly well with the traditional coffee milt stout flavors. Lightly sweet up front, turning into a mildly bitter aftertaste.
4.0 Pretty accurate decription. Gotta admit that i was a little offput by the idea of adding lemon peel to this, but it actually works quite nicely. And the esspresso notes are pretty much the best i’ve ever had in a beer. Milky sweetness up front with a slight lemon bitter twinge. Nicely done.
3.8 Bottle from Bert’s Solid dark brown decent sized mocha head. Big roasty coffee with a solid roasty earthy bitterness. Faint citrus that I’m not sure really adds much. Nice coffee stout though.
3.5 Dark brown. Some tan foam. Aroma coffee, caramel, toast, cocoa. Tastes slight citus mostly cocoa. Sorta takes on a bit of a black ipa flavor with the citrus.
3.6 Pours black with minimal khaki colored head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee and a mild sweetness. Taste follows the nose with a bitterness in the finish reminiscent of dark chocolate. Despite the brewing process I don’t detect any lemon. Creamy with a medium body.
4.1 Pours black a one finger tan head which fades to some lacing. Aroma is of espresso, roasted malts, coco, sweet malts, caramel, and lactose. Taste is pretty similar to the aroma with the addition of some light lemon notes. Has a medium-full body with a creamy mouthfeel and a mostly sweet, long finish. Overall, a pretty nice sweet stout that feature some nice espresso notes that are mellowed out by some light lemon notes.
3.8 Draft at chaps. Pours pitch black with a medium sized brown head. The aroma has a nice sweetness, cocoa, light roast. The taste has a smooth chocolate and coffee flavor, light roast on the finish. Beautiful.
3.3 Bottle, black beer, ream colored head, some lace. Aroma is coffee, toasted barley, chocolate, metal. Taste is coffee, sweet chocolate, burnt sugar, vanilla. This is a bit sweet. Palate is decent, carbonation moderate
3.5 Decent brew. Not the coffee pow I was expecting but definitely there. Very nice mouthfeel. Nose a little lacking but nice taste. Would order again but nothing crazy.
3.1 (tap) clear very dark brown colour with a small brown head; aroma of roast, stewed fruit; roasty, herbal flavour with a long, medium bitter finish
3.5 Bottle, pours dark black, aroma is coffee and roasty, flavour is actaul not as much coffee and espresso flavours as expecting. It was good and highly drinkable. Overall tasty stuff
3.9 This is good, and damn good. I don’t generally enjoy a sweet stout like so many others do, but this is lovely. The pour is thick, dark roasted coffee in color and capped with a thick, dense foam. The aroma wafting up from the glass is heavy espresso, chocolate and old leather. First tip of the glass makes me think I’m drinking cold coffee, but there’s so much more than that. The creaminess of the beer, the feel of the silky liquid on my tongue is amazing. The foam caresses my lip as I drink, and the aroma is intensified as I swallow and exhale. This isn’t some paltry, weak brew. This is rich, deep, and worthy of another deep quaff. The flavor is intense, the taste finding a balance between bitter and sweet. As I let the beer settle on my taste buds, it fades with a struggle; consistent and tasty, leaving a final bitter dryness on the back of my tongue. Not quite a session brew, but a drinkability that leaves me wanting more.
3.5 Appearance: pours with a large tan head, the beer is a very dark black color Aroma: chocolate, coffee, dark roasted grain, Taste: alcohol, coffee, chocolate, bitterness on the finish Palate: soft carbonation, medium mouthfeel, sweet and bitter aftertaste Overall: drinks like it has a higher abv than it does, lots of coffee and chocolate, I like it but not for a session beer
3.6 Tap @ BeerHive. Very dark with mocha head. Smells earthy with dark fru, some rustiness, and some astringency. Sweet, astringent, then roast y and bitter.
4.3 Bottle. Aroma of espresso and strong vanilla. Deep dark body with thin tan head. Chocolate and espresso taste, followed by burnt malts and a bitter finish.
