Southern Tier Blackwater Series: Mokah

Southern Tier Blackwater Series: Mokah

When empirical and creative impulses collide, the result is often timeless. The classic utility-art aesthetic of the coffee maker is an example of design and engineering working in concert. It is through similar cooperation that the simple bitter cocoa bean is transformed into a sweet treat. As scientists, our brewers utilize their materials to exacting standards. As artists, they couldn’t resist the temptation to combine the best flavors of two of our highly acclaimed Blackwater Series Imperial Stouts, Jahva and Choklat. Alone each is perfect, but together as Mokah, they are an inimitable expression of two of the world’s most sought after flavors. Enjoy Mokah stout with - or as - your favorite dessert! Cheers!

4.0 i have liked with Southern Tier and especially so with the Blackwater Series. black with a tan head; fantastic aroma - mainly chocolate with notes of coffee and roasted malts. great, smooth, chocolaty flavor with coffee notes; Great after taste.
3.9 650 ml bottle shared with czar and company. Pours a ruby reddish black with a short lived beige head. Aroma is chocolate, vanilla, coffee and sugar. Flavor is chocolate, vanilla, dark coffee, hazelnut. Finish is coffee, dark chocolate, nice bitterness. Lingering ash, warming alcohol. Medium body, velvety mouthfeel and weak carbonation.
4.2 Thanks Jon for the bottle share! Pours a deep black with a small tan head that lingers for a bit. Light pepper aromas with milk chocolate, cacao nibs and dark roasted coffee. Taste is fairly well balanced between roasted espresso and dark chocolate. Dry coffee forward finish that lingers.
3.8 Poured into a wine glass showing light coffee rims with half a finger of latte colored foam. The nose shows a lot of green pepper and vegetal notes. Upon warming up, a lot of generous chocolate notes appear. The palate is lightly carbonated and medium bodied. Flavors of very light sweet chocolate, light flavors of dark roasted malts and a dark cacao bitterness on the finish.
3.9 Pours a brown with slight amber hue. Nose of dark chocolate and roasted malts. Taste of dark chocolate, bitterness on the finish. Very chewy - lingers on the palate. Excellent and delicious beer.
4.0 Black rimming beige head; aroma is rich chocolate whipped cream coffee blend; flava is rich complex blend of chocolate tangy malt coffee hops(subtle); feels thick soft foamy fizz; finishes tangy sweet malty roasty notes of coffee and cocoa
3.9 Pours cola brown with thin head and minimal lacing. Aroma is very faint and muted, but thin notes of chocolate and coffee. Taste is dark cocoa and coffee, pleasant hints of caramel and malt.
3.7 A fine stout lacking only in appearance and viscosity in my opinion. It looks thin and is a bit thin on the tongue. I’ve been overall impressed with Southern Tier and especially so with the Blackwater Series.
4.1 black with a tan head; fantastic aroma - mainly chocolate with notes of coffee and roasted malts and whisps of alcohol; great, smooth, chocolaty flavor with coffee notes; dark roasted malt and light alcohol notes; malt is just slighty sweet; bitter chocolate finish with light, warm alocohol notes
3.8 Great chocolate and coffee aromas, light stopping thick appearance. Great sweet flavors of chocolate with hints of coffee and almost a coriander or some sweet herb. Great after taste.
2.9 Thinner in appearance than many big RIS but thicker and gloopy mouthfeel. Oily. Like a melted vanilla/chocolate milkshake. So sweet. Blueberry/raspberry yogurt aftertaste. Caramelised Starbucks frappuccino. Way too sweet for me, gets fatiguing quite quickly.
3.5 Dark black. Light white head. Aroma is chocolate vanilla. Taste is chocolate more than coffee. A bit syrupy like all the Blackwater. Ok.
3.8 Very deep chocolate aroma and flavor. Almost tootsie roll like. Malty but not super malty for a dark imperial. Full flavored smooth and balanced. Get a bit of an odd bitter finish that is a bit off, but is a solid imperial stout. A notch or two below the top imperials though. NOTE: last night had 8oz of this and 8oz of a 5%abv saison. Have a slight headache, after way little beer last night. Feel like some of the off flavors and lighter palate for how malty this is may be some adjuncts or residual "tails" from a high gravity beer. Not sure if they are trying to make a "top" beer cheaply? But should not feel any impacts from how little I had. Just a note to my future self. Keeping my rating at 3.8, but would be reluctant to have again.
4.2 Bottle. Milk chocolate, coffee, malt, and straw aroma. Dark brown with nice tan head. Sweet chocolate milk, malt, and bitter herbal coffee and hay flavor. Nice body. Sweet but not a sugar bomb like the Creme Brulee - excellent.
4.3 Black in color with a thick, frothy head that hugs the side of the glass making great lacing. Definetly can smell the chocolate and coffee. Aroma also has some licorice and bready notes. Slick on the palate that leaves a long drawn out finish. A tad bit salty. I like that the coffee is well balanced with the chocolate. There is a faint taste of alcohol which should be expected for a 10% beer. This is warming me up inside on a chilly day . Perfect combanation with the weather.
4.3 I guess I should have tried the singleton Jahva and Choklat first. Alas, this one is all-in on aroma and flavor. Almost too much richness. Pours dark, almost black, with thin, tan head. Heavy in both chocolate and coffee aromas, it’s delightful. The flavor is where there’s almost too much going on. I like things simple, so a good imperial stout is my favorite. Adding both choc and java puts this into some kind of different realm, where it’s tasty and all, but getting away from why I love beer. no doubt this one’s for dessert!
3.5 Slightly metallic, chocolatey aromas, subtle coffee. Dark brown-black with a mostly fading tan head. Sweet and chocolatey, creamy. Full bodied, very smooth, alcohol is well hidden.
4.3 Aroma coffee, roasty, caramel, licorice, Appearance black, tan foam, Tastemedium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate full body, Overall an amazing imperial stout that hides the alcohol very well. More chocolate than coffee but delicious. I would suggest this beer to a friend
3.9 Originally rated on 9/12/14. Deep black body with a brown one-finger head. Really great chocolate and marshmallow aroma. Initial taste has a really strong dark chocolate and cocoa flavor. Full bodied that drinks relatively easy. Coffee flavor is very mild and there’s just a slight bitterness around mid taste. Finishes sweet with a lingering chocolate flavor.
3.9 650ml bottle. Black color with brown head. Roasted malty aroma, chocolate, coffee, caramel, cocoa, vanilla. SWeet and biter taste. Full almost creamy body with soft carbonation
3.5 Chocolate, roasted malty aroma. Bitter aftertaste. Espresso sensibility. The booze is faint. Full bodied. Actually rather good, meant for Winter. Definitely for worshippers of dark chocolate.
4.0 Bomber from Roth’s. Black in color. Sweet nose of chocolate and vanilla. Almost a chocolate milk or cocoa aroma. Super rich chocolate up front with some really roasty sweet coffee. Very rich and decadent with a pretty good hop kick as well. A touch of alcohol. Huge beer with huge flavors. Very nice.
3.1 bottle at home thanks to bruce, cheers! pours unctuous tan tinged black with rich earthy/ashy coffee and chocolate on nose. Quite roasty, ashy, dark cocoa, low vanilla, full bodied a touch undercarbonated. alcohol level makes this a bit tough going and acrid finish offputing. disappointng given calibre of brewery
4.0 Bottle. Thought I rated this a long time ago but I guess not. Big sugary aroma of chocolate syrup, coffee beans, light roast, almond milk, and some dark fruit. Tastes like a dessert beer. Like drinking ultra chocolaty milk with espresso poured in. Almond, vanilla, and a hint of cherry too. Medium to full body. This is delicious but I kinda wish I didn’t open this bottle alone.
5.0 This beer is extraordinary. Great flavor profile and mouth feel. Perfect compliment to a desert or just on its own after an excellent meal.
4.5 Had this from the bottle. Poured very dark. Smelled very strong of chocolate, very sweet, espresso. The taste was great, very milk chocolaty, mocha stands out very nicely, fruity, sweet, very smooth. Awesome stout.
4.4 Bomber. Black with a light brown head. Milk chocolate bordering on tootsie roll, light roasted coffee, dry roasted almond, light earthiness and malt powder. Dessert like sweetness with a light coffee bitterness. Body is heavier with a sticky feel. Beer version of tiramisu. Another excellent sweet imperial stout from Southern Tier.
5.0 Another great tasting brew. Aroma of dark bitter chocolate and French roast coffee. Not to harsh bitterness as it was balance out by some milk chocolate finish. More coffe that some of their others which was A+++.
3.8 Bomber. Clear dark reddish brown with a thick, tan head that lasts and laces. Aromas of big chocolate syrup, coffee, roasted malt, and some light dark fruit. Flavor is the same. Full bodied, creamy, syrupy and smooth. Lingering chocolate and coffee.
4.3 Pours opaque, near black, with small tan head. Great aroma of coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla. Palate is darker, bitter chocolate, espresso, burnt toast, black cherry, peppery spice. It’s harder than the nose, but manages to avoid the chalkiness that affects some coffee brews. Medium body, with the 10 percent ABV well controlled until a nice dab of heat on the finish. Nice accompaniment for dessert, or dessert itself.
