Southern Tier Cherry Saison

Southern Tier Cherry Saison

Cherry saison is concurrent with the best of summer weather. The days are long and warm, and the spring blossoms have gracefully turned to plump drupes. Much in the same way, our Imperial Cherry Saison undergoes subtle but noticable changes while cruising from kettle to bright tank. Like the sun ripening fruit, a pit stop makes this beer better. Cherry Saison is aged with French Oak staves, imparting overtones of spice and balancing the natural sweetness of the cherries. Cherry Saison is the first in this series to incorporate oak aging. Enjoy it as a dessert beer, or tilt it back while sitting under a shady tree on a warm summer afternoon.

1.5 sour saison that don´t go into ours taste. surely good for people that like saison and sour beer
1.6 28/07/2011 1pt 6 Fl. Oz. bottle @ Klaas’ place (2011-354) Thanks to Klaas for sharing the bottle! Clear orange beer, small creamy head, unstable and adhesive. Aroma: very dirty first impression, stale and musty, some alcohol. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: sour start, then rotten fruit, stale, like beer gone bad. Also bitter almonds (or the stone/pit of a peach if you want) are noticeable. Dry aftertaste with lots of sour notes and a chemical touch. An experiment gone bad, if you ask me.
3.0 Pale golden of colour with a weak white head. An aroma with weak notes of cherries and red berries. A dry flavour of cherries, weak sweets in the finish.
2.8 Bottle: Medium vast white head on top of a clear orange colored beer. Smell fruits, fine malts, hops, red fruits, Taste is an unbalanced mix of alcohol, malts, hints of spices, wood, yeast and light sour. A light dry alcoholic malty aftertaste. Medium carbo, tingling mouthfeel, low to medium body and a watery texture. An unbalanced cherry saison.
2.9 Clear golden with a white head. Aroma is sweet, malty, fruity - cherries in particular - and alcohol. Flavor is quite sweet. Dry finish. 070511
3.0 Aroma has candy, cherries, caramel, sweet yeast, oxidation, peppers. Taste is cherries, slightly peppery, a spicy and flowery yeast, slightly sour in the finish. Didn’t get any oak on this one at all.
3.1 Pours clear golden with a tiny white head. Aroma is cherry, candy (jelly gums) and notes of alcohol. Taste is acid, orange peel, sour berries, lime, spicey and maybe a bit of earth.
2.9 Bottle. Clear yellow. Small white head - almost fizzy. Aroma has a small nose of cherry and alcohol. Distinct taste of sour cherries, some bitterness, dry - full body.
2.9 Bottle. Creamy white good mostly lasting head. Yellow colour. Light malty and hoppy aroma. Short light bitter finish. Oily palate.
3.1 Botte. Clear dark golden with small off-white head. Flavour is malt, little cheery, fruit, yeast, bitter and little bitter.
2.7 Clear golden color with okay head. Spicey flavor - bitter cherry? No hobs weird beer.
3.3 Bottle from Voldby. Nice head with good duration. Color is golden. Aroma and taste are taste are berries, yeast, fruits, malt and hops.
3.5 Light hazy golden body, white head. Aroma of sour cherries, funky berries, malt, wheat. Flavour has some alcohol,, sourness, cherry. Lighter than aroma. Excellent brew.
3.2 Pours wheat golden with a slight amber tint. Huge, frothy white head which clears out rather quickly. Aroma of oak, hops, cherry, wheat, malts, and slight bready hints. Body is mild with a pleasingly crisp tartness, especially in the finish. The cherry is not too evident in the flavor; much more earthy and wood taste. Overall a bit of a disappointment, as I excpect a lot from Southern Tier, but still a very enjoyable, drinkable saison.
4.0 650 ml bottle. Finland. Cloudy amber colour with tiny white head. Caramel, fruit, malt, toffee, butterscotch, sour cherries and strawberries gone off in aroma. Sour flavour is cherries, strawberries and berries in general but all gone bad. Even though the berries are gone bad it works brilliantly here. Just perfect combination of sourness and sweet butterscotch. Just excellent Saison. Well, to be honest this ain’t that Saison-y after all.
3.3 (22oz bomber thanks to Exiled) clear bright orange-yellow with a few fine white bubbles. Nose of cherry, spices, candied fruit, Belgian yeast. Taste of candied oranges, bitter orange peel, light alcohol, wheat, and some lightly sweet cherry in the background. Oily medium body, well carbonated. Rhubarb and artificial cough syrup type linger on this one.
3.7 Found some old ratings on paper that I never posted. pour is a hazy dark orange with little head and no sediment. Aroma is mild cherry, less than expected, and some hints of wheat. flavor is mild cherry and bitter hops. Some oats too. smooth and sweet.
2.6 Nice & clear, gold with little to no head. Cherry aroma is there in the background and in not dominant (good thing). Some sweetness with some spicy tastes but flavours over-ridden by to much alcohol. Sour, thin finish.
3.2 bottle, thanks to exiled,.golden color with sudsy foam, grainy cherrylike aroma, flavor of oaky cherry, leathery caramel
2.9 Appearance: shimmering gold with little to no head. A thin collar does linger but she doesn’t exactly demand my attention. Swirls with a temporary thick white head…then poof! Gone. Nose: subtle cherry notes, mostly of frozen cherries beginning their defrost process. Did I mention subtle? Back cherries and bready underneath, almost doughy as in pie crust. Very subtle spice character; cinnamon sticks and brown sugar. Palate: much more spice than the nose with cinnamon sticks, wood, and faint nutmeg. Black cherries of the canned variety but thankfully lacking the syrupy sweet nectar they are usually swimming in. sweetness continues underneath and into the back. Bread crust and crusty at the same time; subtle dryness. I did mention subtle, right? Overall very mild and subdued to a fault; lacks saison punch and cherry punch. Dry spice and dry wood in the back and breath. Cherry sweetness remains on top. Final Thoughts: of all the Southern Tier beers I have supped over the years this one has been the least impressive. Rather weak on all fronts, I’d recommend a revisit to the brewing drawing board if it were me.
3.5 Bottle@Schouskjelleren Mikrobryggeri. Hazy, bright pale amber. Beige top. Spicy and woody aroma. Sour notes and tart cherry. More cherries in the flavor. Both sweet and tart. Restrained malts. Lots of spicyness and herbs. Medium full. Finishes dry fruity and spicy. An exciting fruit beer/saison hybrid.
3.1 It’s warm golden with an aroma of cherries and cherry pits. The flavour is moderately sweet and has berry-acidity, notes of cherries, but IMO just as much other kinds of berries. The finish is sourish and slightly dry.
3.3 Thanks to Exiled for sharing this bottle. The beer pours a yellow color with a white head. The aroma is a mix of Belgian yeast, lighter malts, cherries and a lot of oaked notes. There are a lot of oaked notes in the flavor as well. I get cherries, yeast and caramel malt as well as the dry, oak. The beer is very dry. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Pretty good, but not one of the better beers I have had from Southern Tier.
3.5 Bottle courtesy exiled. Clear light golden pour. Aroma is heavy fruit, cherry with a bit of woody tart. Flavor is big wood and dark fruit. Dry flavor with a cherry pie finish.
3.9 floral, citrus, alcohol, cherry, orange peel, amber, hazy, minimal head, medium sweetness, lightly sour, tart, light body, thin feel, lively, astringent, wine grape, cider This is a very drinkable summer/autumn beer. A good suggestion for someone who may like the lighter lambics and wants something with no bitterness.
2.8 (Bottle 75cl) Pours orangey pink with a small head. Flavour of cherry stones, almond (marzipan). Overall flavour is closer to a sparkling rose wine than a saison. I don’t think the various flavour elements cooperate.
3.0 22oz bottle. Hazy golden orange. Aroma of a cherry wood pile. Some fruit juice, some dried oak. Soft creamy texture. Flavor of dry cherry fruit, bread, distant tartness. Not my favorite Southern Tier, still better than most.
2.8 Pours a hazy straw yellow, nose is cherry’s with a hint of saison esters, taste is just too sweet with cherry, mild saison character, midly tannic. not very good at all.
3.5 A: snifter. pours an opaque peach color with a great off-white head. good/medium retention, spot lacing. S: wonderful malty aroma, with hints of cherries, bittersweet cherries. light hint of oak. T: great flavor, very unique saison. mild cherry flavors, masked by the wheat. light sour tones. mild oak hues. tastes more like a belgian golden ale. M: medium to heavy body. mild carbonation level. slightly creamy. D: very good brew, but not an outstanding saison. very unique idea.
3.4 Poured nice light straw yelloe smelled of cider and yeast tasted slightly sour but not as good as I thought
