Southern Tier Farmer's Tan Imperial Pale Lager

Southern Tier Farmer's Tan Imperial Pale Lager

Neolithic humans evolved from nomadic hunters into a more settled agricultural society, changing life forever. The ‘founder’ crops they raised included wheat and barley. It is little surprise that the first examples of brewing appeared during this age.

Brewers owe much to the epoch. Similarly, we thank our farmer friends of today for cultivating the ingredients the are responsible for the beers we now enjoy. Their laborious days spent ourdoors under the hot sun earn them respect, as well as a mark of distinction: the farmer’s tan. Yes, the inevitable red and white hallmark of hard work.

3.3 Bottled. Pours hazy golden in color with a small head. Fruity lemon in aroma, bit of dishwasher in aroma. Sweetish malty taste, some citrus and bit of booze in taste. It aint entirely bad.
3.4 6/17/2010: Southern Tier Farmer’s Tan Pale Lager... Aroma: Not much there... Hints of grassy hops and biscuit-like malts. Appearance: Golden color; mostly clear; off-white corwn; minimal carbonation; nice lacing. Flavor: Hints of everygreen/juniper; reserved pale malt and some biscuit; quite balanced. Palate: Medium to medium-full; smooth, but slightly thick. Overall: Not overly intense; very drinkable and dangerous considering its alcohol content! 650 ml bottle from Jungle Jim’s International Market in Fairfield, OH. Rating #289 for this beer.
2.2 Bottle from New Beer: Pours a clear golden with good clarity and a film of white head. Sweet aroma of corn syrup, honeyish pale malt, and a very off phenolic note. Very sweet and under attenuated. Slick body. Candy like flavor of sweet sticky sugary sweetness, It seems under attenuated, Corn syrup and off phenolics. I pick up on a hint of European noble hop spiciness, but the off flavors are too powerful. Perhaps this was a decent beer when it was fresh.
2.6 Old ass bottle @ home, courtesy of jcnielsen. Thanks Jetson!!!!!! Pours a hazy golden orange appearance with a decent sized, cream colored head that doesn’t have much retention. Lemony, papery, cardboard, quite sweet, boozy aroma. Very sweet and candy sugary, lemon citrusy, fairly boozy, syrupy malty flavor. Even when this was fresh, I don’t see how this could have been all that great. At this point, it’s a drain pour.
3.3 Old rating. Draught. Clear golden blond coloured beer with a medium white head. Stronger hoppy bitter touched aroma. Medium palate; FInish is bitter, stornger bitter fruity hopflavours. Not bad.
3.2 22 ounce bottle. Pours a mostly clear gold with a small white head. Aroma of citrus, grass, and spice. Taste is lemons, grass, oranges, cloves, pine, and malt. Lots of alcohol coming through. Pretty good.
3.3 22 oz Bomber-Clear yellow pour with a moderate white foamy head. Sweet, hoppy aroma. Flavors of floral hop, some grain/bread dough, & some citrus. Smooth & easy to drink, alcohol was well hidden. Enjoyable w/a hop bite on the finish.
3.3 Bottle, 22 oz, at Cardinal. It pours an unclear, golden body and a small, white head. The aroma is very piney and citrusy, leaving little room for the malts. Really pleasant, although a bit one dimensional. That goes for the flavour too. The ABV is well hidden, didn’t expect it to weigh in at 9 percent. It’s a bit too herbal in the flavour, slightly grassy, but mostly citrusy and piney. A nice bitterness chimes in, lasting for a while. Full body, with a faint warmth. Soft carbonation. A pleasant beer, but I’d rather choose a Belgian pale and strong one. 121022
3.4 Decent. The nose is grass and hay with some pine notes and little malt. The beer is golden with deep yellow highlights. Bitter with some sweetness. Smooth and fuller than the typical pale lager, but with some warming notes.
3.3 (bottle - 22 oz) Clear golden pour with a good amount of carbonation left for an older bottle. Mild bitter and malt aroma with a very light grassy note. Flavor is pretty decent, though a bit mild. Some light hop bitterness and alcohol at the front with a lightly bitter finish and aftertaste.
2.8 pours a clear plae yellow with a small egg shell head, and good lacing. smell is of citrus, some grain, and some floral. taste is crisp, corn, some citrus, malt in the back, and a few hops. ends a tiny bit bitter.
3.4 Bomber. Not sure how old this is but it seems OK. Light bitterness mixed with citrus and caramel. A heavy brew with a dry finish.
3.7 Bottle at Cardinal. Golden colour with a white head. Aroma is hop, malt, peaches. Flavour is fruit, hop, malt, grapefruit, alcohol, caramel. Medium to full body. Nice beer.
3.7 Keg at Cask Pub and Kitchen, Pimlico, London. A dark golden coloured pour with a medium white head on top. Rich hoppy aroma. Tastes hoppy, malty, slightly sweet and very rich. Really nice stuff, don’t think I’ve had an Imperial Lager before.
3.5 Clear golden in colour with a long lasting white head, excellent lacing. The aroma is herbal, sweet, some caramel, grassy with some citrus hops. The flavour is lightly sweet, rather hoppy, herbal and citrus, light alcohol. Lightly bitter mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, quite bitter and dry at the end. I like these imperial Southern Tier beers, well done here. 650ml bottle from the Premier Gourmet in Buffalo, New York. Opened on March 31, 2011. No date.
1.4 Guess I now know why i wasnt a huge fan off this, it was old and I didnt realize they stopped making it, Guess I found an old bottle, It was quite bitter and not smooth in anyway. It wasnt the most refreshing beer I have tasted
4.0 29th September 2010 Clear pale gold beer, little white head. Light palate, slightly soft. Lovely hops - minty with a hint of aniseed. Well integrated light orange and grapefruit. Finishes with a little creamy malt and a hop aniseed aftertaste. The best pale lager ever! Hugely drinkable!
3.4 650 ml bottle. Pours a golden colour with large lazy bubbles and a white lacy head. Aroma of sweet orange, sweet berries and alcohol. Flavour of sweet malts, floral notes, orange, lemon zest, berries, very strong hops, some bread and alcohol, of course. Medium bodied, dryish mouthfeel and a long, warming, malty and light floral finish. Surprisingly good drinkability but still an alcohol bomb.
2.6 Originally reviewed: 11/9/10. 22oz bottle poured into a pilsner glass. Pours a dark gold with a thick white head on top. Great sticky lace along with excellent retention. The nose is full of big citrus hops, with tones of floral and grass. This reminds me of an APA. The mouth is pretty heavy for a lager, albeit Imperial. Mellow finish. Admittedly, I’m not a huge fan of the style. This is very boozy, in my opinion. Faint citrus hops bitter this one up, but the booze overpowers. Mild grains noted as well. This beer is just too hot for me. I understand this is a weird hybrid/Imperial-ized version, but when I want a lager, I want something that is refreshing and easily drinkable. This was not.
4.5 On draft at Taco Mac into a small tulip glass. Medium straw/yellow with a 1/4 inch head which dissipated slowly. Called an imperial IPA - it’s got some Belgian going on there too nearly. Not as heavy as a typical imperial, and quite tastey.
4.1 22 ounce bottle into pilsener glass straight out of the fridge; bottled 6/22/2011. Pours slightly hazy golden straw color with a dense 1-2 finger white head with nice retention that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Some nice spotty lacing on the glass; with a decent amount of carbonation streaming up. Aromas of biscuit, lemon, pepper, herbal, grass, clove, and orange. Nice and well balanced aromas with decent strength and balance. Taste of big lemon, biscuit, pepper, orange, clove, grass, pine, and herbal hops. Nice bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, orange, clove, pine, grass, and biscuit on the finish for a good bit. A ton of flavor present here, with great balance of bitterness and malt sweetness. Medium carbonation and body; with a slightly creamy mouthfeel. Drinks dangerously smoothly for 8.6%; with only a slight alcohol warming after the finish. Overall this is a great imperial pilsener. Plenty of hoppiness and flavor; and very smooth to drink for such a big beer. It has definitely held up great since bottling last year; and I picked this bottle up for 3 bucks in the discount bin so it was a great choice.
3.8 Botella de 650ml. Vaso Lager. Saboreada en ene´12. Color dorado pálido. Algo velada. Sabrosa, refrescante y asimilable. 22fl. Oz. Bottle. Lager glass. Enjoyed on jan´12. Pale golden color. Chill haze. White color, close, dense froth. Lasting thin head. Floral fragancy, hints of licorice, subtle pine & cinnamon hues to the nose. Gentle malty upfront. Strong hop bitterness follows. Medium-full body, medium-high carbonation. Smooth lemon & fruity finish. Dry bitter aftertaste. Well balanced flavors with a nice mildy malt backbone. Flavorful, refreshing & drinkable.
3.4 Slightly sweet aroma....dark golden color...small off white head..sweet malt flavors and a delicate hop taste...well balanced
3.3 From Beerlicious iphone App: No aroma. Pale hazy color with frothy white head. Medium to heavy bitterness finish. Medium body with creamy texture. Average carbonation with a typical bitter finish.
4.2 Poured into a tall glass mug. It’s a beauty; dark straw color with a thick three fingers of white head. The tall glass shows off the bubbles floating up and the tall head. Quite fragrant for a lager. Strong malt/grain smell. A bit of ripe orange and pear. Well, the taste is strong for a lager too; not up to an ale strong. Sharp bitterness from the hops. The pilsner malt is evident in a larger, strong quantity too. It’s like a triple czech pils crammed into a normal glass. Lots of flavor. Crisp texture, medium body and moderate carbonation. A great job here. All the best of a normal pilsner brought out extra strong.
4.3 On tap at Craft Beer Co. Clear deep gold with lasting thin white head. Hoppy aroma. I think really drinkable. Lovely hop too. I really like it. Love imperial lager. Just so drinkable for the strength.
3.0 Bomber from Sam’s, Durham, even after strong cautionary advice. Fizzy deep gold pour, attractive enough I suppose. Heavy aroma of dank malts and harsh, grassy hops. Mouthfeel is a bit heavy too, with an oily feel that’s occasionally relieved by some aggressive carbonation. Grassy and sprucey notes combine not especially well with dense sweet malts. This may in fact be what ST was going for but it’s not for me.
3.2 Pale golden of color with a white head. An aroma of sweet malt, alcohol, weak sherry and hops. A flavor with malt, sweets, citrus and hops.
3.2 Bottle [22oz] shared with HogTownHarry & garthicus -- c/o HogTownHarry. Pours a slightly hazy gold with a small diminishing bubbly white head. Mild aroma of sweet malt, grain, light hops, alcohol and citrus. Pleasant enough flavour of citrus fruit, sweet malt, grain, leafy hops and a bit of alcohol. Average bodied. Better then I expected but it would be a bit tough to drink a whole bomber of this, the alcohol is pretty prominent for the style.
3.2 Thanks to HogTownHarry. Appearance: Dark yellow, almost orange, small white head. Aroma: Perfumish, hoppy, tangy, orange peel, strawberry. Flavour: Stong tangy alcohol, hops, sticky mouthfeel, strawberry, malt, long honey and alcohol finish. Big & boozy.
