Southern Tier Heavy Weizen

Southern Tier Heavy Weizen

Heavy Weizen explores the inner depths of creativity and craftsmanship, taking a style of ale that is delicate and quaffable and shaping it into something exuberant and sturdy.

The foundation of Heavy Weizen begins with prodigious quantities of North American malted barley and wheat. Next, the finest European hops are added to complement this ale’s unique disposition by giving spicy aromas. Its spirit is forged during fermentation where our Bavarian weizen yeast consumes sugars and creates divine flavors reminiscent of bananas and cloves. Then, by aging this ale, we allow the divergent characteristics to blend together, becoming one. To capture Heavy Weizen’s spirit, this wheat ale remains unfiltered to leave some of the yeast in the bottle. Serving this ale with a wedge of lemon is recommended, but optional.
18 plato, 38 IBUs, 2-row pale malt, malted white wheat, hallertau magnum, saaz.

3.5 Hazy orange of color with a small white head. An aroma of wheat, hops, orange, sweets and citrus. A flavor of wheat, citrus, sweets, hops and orange.
3.1 22oz bottle in a tasting glass. Pours light opaque golden with an off-white head. Aroma of the weizen component, but very strong on the bananas and spices. Average texture. Not bad for a wheat ale.
3.7 No lemon -- don’t fruit the beer! Bomber pours hazy pale gold with a moderate, compact bright white head that leaves a light, spotty lacing on the glass. Aroma is subtle but gives hints at the taste, with bits of banana, clove, and sweet (almost cinnamony) bread. Flavor comes through with mild cloves, banana -- but not quite natural banana, more like banana pudding, and a nice wheat-filled pale malt body. Hop bitterness is nearly absent, despite having nearly 40 IBUs, and the 8% ABV is also hidden well. Simple and smooth, great for today’s warm weather!
2.8 Bottle @ home. Hazy, yellow-orange appearance with a white head. Quite yeasty, slightly sour, wheat ale nose. Very yeasty, somewhat strong, somewhat fruity, medium hoppy, wheat ale flavor. Yeasty, slightly sour, fairly hoppy finish. Overrated in my opinion.
3.5 i was pretty impressed with this one. the malts are nicely balanced with the wheat taste to make this a really interesting wheat beer.
3.5 This beer is alright, it pours light head and has a heavy taste all the way through. its quite dark, has a hint of the typical southern tier yeast in the finish, overall not too bad
3.1 Bottle. Dark golden, hazy, small and fully diminishing head. Moderate malty – wheaty sweetish aroma, lots of banana, yeasty. Body is medium, malty –wheaty and sweetish flavor, light banana and alcohol. Finish is average, dryish, quite a lot of alcohol. Nice aroma but otherwise too much alcohol in the flavor/finish.
4.2 Presentation: It was poured from a brown 650ml bottle into a tall Weizen glass. The bottle has a nice description of the beer along with a list of ingredients and its abv (8%). There is however no freshness date listed on the bottle. Appearance: This beer raises a very tall white head which slowly settles as I drink. A nice cap of foam hangs till the last sip and makes for some slick lacy finger patterns on the glass. Its body has a somewhat tan, sandy amber color which is quite murky. Smell: The aroma is yeasty and estery with tons of wheat and some hints of its 8% abv. I also pick also pick up on some hops in the background that add a light earthy/spicy/floral character. Taste/Palate: Its medium to full body has a big yeasty and malty character with notes of banana baby food, unripe peach, pear, mellow phenolic clove and sweet wheat. Towards the finish there is more grainy wheat and light hints of hops and mildly spicy alcohol. The palate feels heavy, smooth and slick with mild carbonation. Notes: This is an interesting beer that walks the line between Hefeweizen and Wheatwine. The heavier feel and abv seems to take away from the bright refreshing nature and drinkability of an average Hefeweizen but the favor is interesting and complex.
3.6 A very interesting wheat beer. Lots of citrus and wheat along with some spice and hop notes. Medium bodied, a bit on the fuller side considering the style, full flavored. Very good, I’m looking forward to trying this one again.
3.3 Location: 22 oz bottle from Buy Rite - Jersey City, 12/12/10 Aroma: The nose is quite citrusy, with some wheat, banana, and a touch of peach as well Appearance: It pours a mostly clear golden-orange color with a small white head and light lace Flavor: Tastes of citrus sweetness, wheaty malts, a little German yeast spice, and a touch of hops Palate: This one has a medium body, average carbonation, and a fairly long and dry finish to it Overall Impression: This is one of those "How the heck haven’t I rated this one?" beers. Anyway, this is a solid Wheat Ale, but nothing spectacular. I’ve come to expect a little more then this from Southern Tier, but it’s certainly plenty drinkable.
4.1 22 oz. bottle poured into a hefe glass. Sweet citrus aromas with a hazy golden pour. Exactly what I thought this would be. A full flavored wheat beer with a lot of character.
3.6 pours hazy orange with a thick white head and nice lacing. Aroma is citrus, banana and yeast with some sour fruit notes as well as roasted vegetables. medium body with a bitter citric taste. finish is spices and some metal.
2.8 Initially it poured with a clear yellow body and did not get cloudy until the end of the bottle. I did easily swirl the bottle hoping to mix the wheat, but it really did not help. Aroma had a nice banana aroma to it and some wheat notes. Flavor had a good fruity malt note and there was some hops. I couldn’t;t really get any wheat or bread notes. Palate was moderate.
3.5 22oz bottle. Cloudy golden color. White head. Wonderful aroma of wheat malt and lots of banana. Nice aroma of earth. Lots of bananas and other fruity esters. Lots of wheat malt, a very nice grain profile. Whole grain liquid bread. Finishes with a yeasty and earthy bitterness. Lots of clove as well. Heavy bodied. Very thick and creamy textured. A bit higher in ABV than most other Wheat Ales. Another nice beer from Southern Tier!! The only down fall is I can taste the alcohol in the finish.
3.3 Picked this bottle up cause it had an anvil on the label which is quite similar to one of mine. Weak nose of malts. Semi cloudy yellow in the glass. Thin head. Body is surprisingly light for an "imperial" anything. Some cloves in the forefront but they are taken over by a pleasant yeasty tone. Some bigger heat appears in the center for a brief show and is escorted off your palate by Bubba and Tiny. Alcohol is well hidden. Hops are genteel and soft. No bananas for me at all. A big wheat brew no doubt, Certainly quaffable, but not a standout.
3.7 Lots of clove on the nose. Pours a hazy Orange with a smallish head even with an aggressive pour. Lots of Clove and cinnamon on the palate, with an orange finish. Very nicely Crafted Wheat Beer, but not as good as some of the German Hefe-Weisszens.
3.5 A-pours a glowing golden amber color with a dense creamy white head that lingers for some time leaving a thick lace behind. S-earthy malt aroma, strong notes of wheat, hints of banana and lemon zest, light yeast and peppery spice in back. T-thick sticky malt up front, notes of wheat with a light banana and lemon flavor coming in. sticky pine resign, light yeast, with notes of spice but faint. moderate bitterness in the finish showing a hint of dry herbal hops. M-relatively full bodied and chewy, creamy on the tongue with a moderate carbonation slightly less than I’d like to see in the style. very syrupy sticky feel to it. D-interesting brew, relatively simple and lacks a little of the spicy balance and big yeast flavors I’d prefer to see. Very unique malt body and flavor to it, different. Still tasty and done well enough to hide the alcohol.
3.6 22oz bottle from Brewery Creek in Vancouver. Golden straw body with a notable viscous pour and modest carbonation. Very estery nose with banana and floral esters, plus a very nutty wheat backbone. Relatively full body with flavours of honey syrup and firm herbal bitterness. Well crafted but not mind blowing.
3.5 itresting but too sweet for me, looks like a very nice weisse.... head is billowy, nose is spice and banana. flavor is all thouse things but a touch over sweet. aftertaste is nice but again a lingering sweet. booze is hidden well.
3.0 [August 30, 2010] On tap into a 22 oz. hand-bottle from Laura Albert’s. Ah, Southern Tier. Nary do you care for subtlety. This appears to be a pretty straight forward weizen just on looks alone but the story soon changes upon a sniff and a sip. This is a sweet one with very blunt and heavy esters leaning towards notes of honey, banana and cloves. The palate is sticky and sweet with cloves weighing down my tastebuds. Some styles don’t work as well when beefed up like this. IMHO, a traditional hefeweizen is appealing given its light fruity and grainy flavors. Take that sweetness and yeastiness and amplify it too much and we have a very sticky and more challenging to drink beer. Just doesn’t work for me. That being said, I can’t say I truly disliked it.
2.7 Refrigerated bottle poured into a refrigerated weizen glass. Pours a hazy light orange with medium density white head. Light wheat aroma with good lacing, and extremely high carbonation. Taste is in between a bavarian hefeweizen and american wheat ale.
3.7 22 oz. bottle, pours hazy orange with a medium white head. Aroma of banana, orange and citrus. Flavour is quite sweet for a wheat ale, with flavours of sweet malt, bananas, orange and citrus. Not as special as many of Southern Tier’s other heavy hitters, but this is a fine addition indeed.
(Rating #3148)
3.7 The beer pours a hazy straw color with a white head. Looks just like any other hefeweizen. The aroma is strong wheat and bananas, but I don’t get much, if any, clove notes in the smell. The flavor is bananas, wheat, alcohol, some cloves and some other spices. You can definitely notice the alcohol in the beer. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
3.0 On tap at Lounge 62. Clear gold pour with a thin white head. Aroma of banana, malt and clove. Flavor is sweet malt and some caramel with a huge banana finish.
4.1 Pours a three finger white head that fades slowly to a thin layer leaving a good lace. Slight haze pale amber color. Medium carbonation and medium bodied. Lemon and yeast nose. Flavor is sweet lemon and yeast, better than a normal wheat. Higher ABV is hidden. $5.99 for a 22oz bottle from Beverage Warehouse Winooski, VT.
3.5 Bottle/22oz - Pours a darkish golden amber in color with a small white head that faded to a thin covering over the beer, Aroma is quite sweet with the distinctive clove/banana of a classic hefe, which it is not. Also some spices with apple/pear and a faint hint of floral hops. Flavor is also quite sweet and with the clove/banana, you might mistake this for a hefe, but that thought quickly disappears as the alcohol becomes more apparent. Although they say that this is an unfiltered beer, it is bright and . clear. A bit of hop bitterness at the end. Very interesting and pretty good!
4.4 Poured surprisingly clear golden yellow from a 22 oz. bottle. It claims to be unfiltered, but the appearance is a little deceiving. White head was rather small - but did not disappear. Banana, pear - some mild spice in the aroma. The cloves become more present in the taste -- incredible by the way -- with some banana-like sweetness and a hint of alcohol. Finish is clean and carbonation is perfect. This is one of the best I have had in this category of brews!
3.5 22 oz. bottle from Jungle Jim’s. Pours clear gold with almost no head, but what head there is is white. Notes of bananas, wheat, clove, yeast, spices, pale malts, lemon citrus, honey, and floral hops. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a wheaty mouthfeel. Some stickiness on the finish. Lots of banana flavor lingers. Nice ’imperial’ wheat ale.
3.4 Grain and hop aroma. Pretty mild for an 8% ABV brew. Nice head and plenty of lacing. It goes down like a slightly heftier weizen (thus the name, I guess). A fair amount of light hop bitterness and a dash of malt liquor in the flavor. A good wheat-based brew.
