Southern Tier IPA

Southern Tier IPA

IPA stands for India Pale Ale and ours is an American version of the classic style. IPA’s namesake lies in its colonial roots. British soldiers on their way to India dark a lot of beer, but found it would go stale on the long voyages. Meanwhile, brewers knew that by adding more hops, the beer would stay fresh. Voila! A new style was born and it is one we are proud to brew. Southern Tier IPA is a triple-hopped on its journey to your glass for a fully aromatic experience.

3.7 ABV 7.0. Southern NY. Overall good ipa. Not too strong in the way of hops and not too much citrus. Aroma is lacking. But that’s all that’s negative about this beer. Ian
4.0 Overall a very nice IPA. Good hoppy flavor. Dry palate. Very nice.
3.9 Bottle.Pours a clear gold with an off-white head. Nice combination of hoppiness and malt sweetness in the taste and aroma.
3.9 From May 2008 I got this in a trade with Wasatch. Thanks John! It pours a clear(turns hazy with second pour) yellow gold with a huge head of foam that keeps trying to overflow in my glass so naturally, I had to make a save. The foam tastes nice. Awesome head retention and the lacing is heavy duty for the style. I get some bready notes in the smell as well as some hop bitterness. More of a floral hop bitterness than any citrus/grass/pine but again, it's nice. The first sip and I see this a well balanced IPA. Plenty of bready malt to go with a slightly bitter lemon hop presence. After taking a few more sips, the hops become more citrusy and I think I'm tasting some tangerine but don't quote me on that but they don't overpower the malt at all. Very well balanced and very smooth and easy drinking. A little high in alcohol to be a real session brew but what the hell...it's pretty sessionable for me. The mouthfeel is medium, the carbonation is on the light side, and it finishes with a semi sweet semi bitter flavour that kind of reminds me of Bridgeport IPA which...I like! Bottom line: A very tasty, well balanced American IPA that I can recommend. Another nice brew from Southern Tier.
3.4 Draft at the Big Hunt 5-26-17
4.1 Bottle obtained in variety 12-case of IPAs on road trip through NY. Great tasting IPA. Balanced taste of malt sweetness and hoppiness. Worthy of a second glass or more
3.4 pours golden amber with white fluffy head that last. the aroma is resin, grapefruit, pine, and earthy, with some citrus. the flavor is citrus with small amount of grapefruit, and alot of resin and pine. Some lighter caramel through. the palate leaves bitterness at the end and some lingering flavors. overall well balanced and quite refreshing at 7.3% hidden well.
3.1 Too sweet and not hoppy or bitter enough...hard to reach minimum character length with beers you don’t like...
3.5 I’ve had the southern tier 2xipa’s and thought they were great tasting.... Gotta watch because they will sneak up on you. The regular southern tier is a little less hoppy but very tasty....loved it!
4.0 Bottle from MGM (sorry, small business owners). Consumed in a beautiful Bent Paddle glass. Attractive golden orange hue. Nice white attractive head. Nose is a blend of pine and citrus rind. Definitely makes you excited for a high quality IPA. Taste is a well balanced with a stronger malt presence than others in the style. Pleasant hop overtone without bringing much bitterness to the table. Resiny mouthfeel. Very drinkable with a little alcohol presence that hits home towards the end. Great brewery.
3.1 Pours an amber from a bottle. Aroma is of vomit and tropical fruit. Thankfully, only the fruit and a big bitterness is conveyed in the mouth. Good beer.
4.3 golden, clear, sparkling, frothy, white foam, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium body, full body, average carbonation, bitter,
3.9 Draft at Buffalo Marriott. Very little aroma. Amber color with white head that lingers nicely, good lacing. Nice malt balance, smooth hoppiness, a little citrus flavor. Not a hop bomb. Med to full mouthfeel, smooth. Overall, a very drinkable IPA, more in the style of a British IPA. I like it!
4.5 Bottle. A good representative of the current crop of strong hoppy IPAs with minimal sweetness and strong, lingering bitter flavor. Hop:malt aroma and flavors, ratio ~ 70:30. Malt undertones smooth out an otherwise strongly hoppy IPA, although with fundamentally strong bitterness. Appropriately bitter finish. Overall, very smooth and satisfying.
3.5 bottled - nice amber/orange color. A good IPA overall. Decent hop flavor and aroma.
3.8 355ml bottle. Enjoyed a bottle on my recent trip to Toronto. Pours a minimal size head and has a pale copper appearance. Huge citrus aromas, very hoppy. Light malts. Flavours are of bitter hops, cascade variety, inoffensive just lots of it, very citrusy. Very light roasted malts. Hint of Grapefruit on the finish. Nice dirty lacing. Creamy mouthfeel. Some bitterness on the palate. Pretty good.
3.6 Pours a light copper with a thin white head that leaves lacing down the glass. Aroma is dominated by pine, with some floral and herbal notes in the background. Moderate sweetness up front with a hint of caramel, followed by a solid, but very well balanced bitterness. Piney, citrus and floral hop flavors. Lightly carbonated with a smooth mouthfeel. A sweeter, but balanced IPA that is quite drinkable.
3.4 Flight #2 at Southern Tier with koleminer20. Aroma is pine, grass, slight tropical fruit, resin, some dankness. Appearance is golden amber, off white head, clear. Taste is pine, malt bitterness, grass, floral, not much tropical fruit. Mouthfeel is light to medium body, light carbonation, bitter malt and pine aftertaste. Overall, meh. A wee bit too much malt.
4.9 A nice bitter, hoppy, drier version of IPA. One of the best. Only drawback is high alcohol.
3.1 Bottle - Very typical IPA style beer. Balanced hops and malt. Dry on the palate. I get citrus and grass flavors. Nothing very unique but a solid drinkable IPA.
3.4 Golden with a thin head. Faint grassy aroma. Grassy taste with a dry finish. Decent IPA.
5.0 Good hoppy/sweet aroma. Light colored with a huge white head that leaves a lot of lacing. Tastes great. Just enough hop bitterness, and that comes through at the very end of each taste. The palate is thick for the style - not watery, very well done
3.7 Average appearance.. very bubbly, not much head to speak of. Aroma is very nice.. clean, floral, sweet hoppy aroma. Taste is clean, citrus floral hops.. a hint of sweet malt. Palate is above average for an IPA. Good quality IPA.
3.4 Bottled. Decent IPA. Pale body, big white head. The aroma is fruity, the taste has some sourness, rhubarb and raspberry.
3.6 Poured from the bottle. Hazy orange amber. Mixed bubble head holds up a bit. Nose is citrus piney hop. Sticky lipped first taste. Honey grapefruit pine cone...even a little tart sap...grows on you.
4.2 Aroma: citrus, pine, floral, bread Appearance: clear golden with an off-white head Taste: medium sweetness, medium bitterness, Palate: medium body, sticky, average carbonation, long finish, Delicious
3.3 Bottle@home, from Constantino’s, Cleveland, USA. Medium bit sweet parfymic/artificial aroma of overaged mango. Golden color with medium/small white head and clear liquid. Medium slightly sweet’n’sour taste of overaged mango and malts, some citrus. Unbalanced. Medium taste spectrum and long hoppy bitter aftertaste. Medium/light body with medium carbonation. Overall, fresh with basic, even bit organic American nuances. Frighteningly good for drinking, but not so good for tasting.
3.4 Poured into a perfect pint. 3.5 A: Mildly hazed orange brown color. Two fingers of frothy beige head. Retention is good and one finger of interrupted lacing is left. 3.5 S: Piney, floral, and citrusy hops. Candied oranges, papaya, and mango. A touch of breadiness and caramel malt sweetness. Pleasant, but fairly mellow compared to more recent releases. 3.75 T: Like the nose, this isn’t an in your face hop bomb. Rather, it’s just a finely crafted IPA of yesteryear. Again a big floral hit with piney undertones. Citrus fruits mentioned above. Bready yeastiness, caramel malts with a pleasant toastiness. Very nice. 3.75 M: Heavier medium body. It’s not quite chewy, but the yeastiness adds something to the body. Good moderate carbonation. Moderately creamy and super smooth. 3.75 D: Good beer, easy to drink. I will always remember this fondly as I believe my first purchase of a case of craft beer was the ST mixed case. ★ 949 characters DavoleBomb, Sep 10, 2015
3.9 Good aroma but mild. Taste is very interesting. You can tell it has been brewed with several makes. Hop flavor comes through. Grassy taste but in a good way. Little boozy. Good solid ipa
2.4 I’m not particularly compelled to go back and try it again, but my experience was that it was very bitter and didn’t have much to it outside of its hop profile, which was strong for the sake of being strong.
