Southern Tier Jah-va Imperial Coffee Stout

Southern Tier Jah-va Imperial Coffee Stout

Three thousand feet above sea level in the misty mountains of Jamaica, some of the worlds finest Arabica beans are hand picked on their way to becoming Blue Mountain Coffee. Halfway around the world, plump spring barley grows to maturity in the loamy soil of North America while aromatic hops are cutivated to exacting standards. Here in our kettles, these three special ingredients are blended to create a heady mixture of sweet sugar, dark roast, and complex flavor. Please enjoy this brew in moderation.

3.6 Rated from notes taken 22 Jun 2011, Southern Tier Beer Tasting -- Great mix of Stout and Coffee. Coming from a guy that doesn’t much like coffee. (I need to try this beer again now that I drink coffee pretty regularly)
4.0 22 oz. bottle from notes. Pours dark brown to black in color with a khaki colored head. The aroma and flavor have roasted malts, coffee, chocolate with a more subdued sweetness than other ST beers like Creme Brulee and Choklat. I generally like all these in smaller amounts. Tasty enough, but not something I seek out often.
4.4 Backlog. Bottle @ Green Lion Inn 2011, aged for about 12 months in average conditions. Their dark beers always excite me, and this is truly fabulous.
4.1 Bomber from Tosa Wine and Spirits. Pours an opaque black with a tan head leaving some spots of lace. Aroma has heavy roast, chocolate and caramel. Taste is of sweet caramel, lactose, heavy espresso and bakers chocolate. Bitter and strong, with a bit of a chocolate chip cookies factor. Full bodied and lowly carbonated. Quite strong and rough. Finishes to the bitter side of bittersweet, with some alcohol presence. And rough. Very tasty and very full bodied - and very extreme espresso.
3.8 beige head disappears without lacing. coffee coloured. aroma reminds of peas, sweet, earthy, coffee, chocolate. taste like aroma, sweet aftertaste boozy, roasted malts, porto. quite dense mouthfeel, medium carbonation. bottle 65cl
Grado alcolico inafferrabile.
4.0 From memory. Had this before my RB days. Apparently thy don’t make it anymore. Similar profile to the other black water series. This one had a lot of coffe and was probably the best I the bunch. Unfortunately this and the mocha which are the two best were the ones discontinued.
3.3 22oz bottle (3/2012) pours near flat brown/black with a few bubbles. Nose is sweet chocolate and artfical roast coffee. Taste is tootsie roll, dusty cocoa, some dark coffee, hershey syrup, boozy. Finish is sweet syrupy hershey and chocolate, a little coffee. Not great at this stage.
4.2 Bomber, pitch black and thick. Nose is chocolatey and sweet. Taste is coffee and chocolate, pretty sweet and very smooth. Solid brew.
3.5 A very good imperial stout but it is way too sweet for my liking. Very sugary and heavily coffee flavored. Smells sweet and like coffee
3.0 DØE;light coffe aroma, black, brown foam, light sweetness, lightly bitter, medium body, creamy, soft carbonation, nice harmonic finish.
3.1 I was disappointed on this one. Not being made any more and I found some so I bought a couple bombers. Too sweet for a stout. Not much, if any, coffee taste.
3.2 Dark brown coloured with a light brown head, medium duration. Roasted aroma with notes of light chocolate. Light coffee too.
3.6 Pours a dark black. Smell is heavy on the alcohol and coffee beans. This is a very creamy beer. Mouthfeel is very thick. Taste is also heavy on the coffee beans. Alcohol hidden well. Not as much flavor as I was hoping for.
3.7 22 ounce bottle from Timfoolery, newsflash stout smells like chocolate and coffee. Sweet.
4.0 9/1/2010. From bottle. pours black with a beige head. Coffee aromas with dark roasted malt, chocolate, dried fruit, spice. Coffee flavors blended with bitter hops and a nice alcohol burn on the finish. Good stuff!
3.5 Not bad, but way too sweet. Could only drink a single glass of this beer. Thanks Tony.
3.2 Bottle: Super black pour, creamy khaki head that settles quickly to a chunky collar. Aroma is roasted coffee beans, mild ash, some brown sugar, & some extra residual sweetness. Taste is pretty sweet up front; lots of milky sweetness, cream, smooth chocolate notes. Coffee actually kind of takes a back seat, but it’s present mid-palate. Timid coffee beans, still with lots of creamy sweetness underneath. Finish of mostly sweet brown sugar. Overall, it has decent flavor, but is suffers a little from the old "Southern Tier sweetness" syndrome.
4.2 Yet another quality ST brew. This one is true to its name. Smells like coffee. Tastes like coffee. Coffee lingers. Bordering on a simpleton -- not much going on with the base stout -- this is nevertheless quite good. B+/A-
3.7 Pours jet black with very little tan head. Nice mocha aroma some yeast, alcohol. Chocolate taste upfront followed by roast coffee flavor. a little chalky . Creamy mouthfeel with slight carbonation. Will drink again.
3.5 Draft. Full frontal coffee beans, dark roast, fruity, peanut butter beans. CO2 and beans add bitterness, malts subdued. Lighter body given intense flavors. Not syrupy, dry finish. Bit of unfermentables, banana yeast. Well put together. Lets the coffee shine. Well put together,
3.7 Bottle from MGM Eagan, Great chocolate and coffee roast aroma, taste is very similar, like a choc covered coffee bean.
3.8 On tap at Ridgewood (Raleigh). Pours dark as a dark and stormy night. Coffee and malt dominate the aroma, ditto for the taste. Just what would be expected from a beer called "Jah-va". These flavors meld nicely with this beer.
4.3 Bomber stored for about a year - jet black pour with not much head and that even disappears pretty quickly. Has a strong mocha aroma and taste with some hints of brown sugar, milk chocolate and vanilla. The mouthfeel is slick and medium heavy. Has a light malty chocolate finish. Nice!
3.5 Pretty much black with a small brownish head. Aroma of milk, coffee, and roasted grain. The taste is mildly bitter, roasty, and slightly sweet. Pretty full bodied, almost no carbonation, slight dryness, and well hidden alcohol.
3.3 Big time coffee aroma. Fairly bitter and acidic. Bitterness lasts through the finish and sticks to the palate.
3.8 Southern tier tasting at coles. Dark dark brown black thick pour with a big healthy foamy light ashy brown head. Big coffee nose with some hop bitterness. Taste is sweet coffee up front with a bitter roasted finish. Pretty thick but not too heavy. Medium short finish.
4.2 22 ounce bottle into snifter, bottled on 3/6/2012. Pours pitch black color with a small dense tan head with good retention, that reduces to a thin lace cap that lingers. Light spotty lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big dark chocolate, coffee, roasted malt, cocoa, toast, light char, dark bread, caramel, toffee, floral, light vanilla, and roasted earthiness. Damn nice aromas with good balance and complexity of roasted malt and coffee notes; with good strength. Taste of big dark chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, milk chocolate, toast, light char, dark bread, caramel, toffee, floral, vanilla, and roasted earthiness. Light amount of coffee bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of dark/milk chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, toast, caramel, toffee, floral, dark bread, vanilla, and roasted earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Fantastic balance and complexity of big chocolate/roasted malt and coffee flavors; with zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and slightly chalky mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with hardly any warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent coffee stout!(even with the age). Great complexity and balance of roasted malt and coffee flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the gravity. A highly enjoyable offering.
4.3 Sweet chocolate, coffee, vanilla, roasted bean smell is strong, you can also smell the alcohol, coffee black look, the taste is sweet, chocolate/coffee, not very bitter, just enough bitterness to linger on your taste buds, a little warm on the swallow. This is one good stout! If you like coffee stouts this one is for you!
3.5 Very good and nice brew. NIce aroma and features in the whole. Fine taste and very crafty.
