Southern Tier Nu Skool IPA

Southern Tier Nu Skool IPA

We spent over a year prototyping R&D versions of Nu Skool. This final version is one special beer. It is an IPA with a slight malty sweetness, but overall balanced & brimming with tropical, fruity, spicy, piney & citrus character. To contrast our IPA, which most closely resembles a traditional English IPA in malt & hop bills, we wanted to brew an India Pale Ale in a new way. West Coast brewers have been brewing lighter, more "Americanized" yet still full of hop character & our brewers wanted to try their hand by brewing their take.

HOP PROCESS: We used 3.5 lbs. of "new school" varieties of hops per barrel of beer. We load our hopback to the brim with Mosaic hops for a big tropical fruit character. A nice whirlpool dose of experimental hop #07270 gives the beer a flavorful, resinous character. We then dry hop this beer on two separate days with a large amount of Mosaic hops in our hop cannon & Simcoe + Equinox two days later.

3.7 My last rate from the 5 rate mix 15 pack. Slightly cloudy deep gold. Nose is tropical fruit and pine. Taste of pineapple, gooseberry, pine, florals and grass. Light bitters slightly malty. Some resin and residual sugar on finish.
3.6 Bit of orange and pineapple in the body where the juiciness complements the piney hops.
3.9 Can. Bright tropical fruit aroma with notes of grapefruit hop citrus, pine resin hops and caramel malt. Pours clear golden colored with a large tan head that has excellent retention and some lacing. Starts with bright tropical fruit and grapefruit hop citrus flavors. Finishes dry, but still quite smooth with caramel malt and some pine resiny hop bitterness. Pretty good ipa.
3.3 Nice beer. I got some NZ hops in there. A bit too much carb for me. The aroma was Lite, taste was bitter, too much early hops maybe.
3.5 Can @ The Mansfield, NYC. Pours golden with a white head. Aroma of malt, grass, citrus, light grapefruit, pine. Flavor is light bitter, malt, fruity hops, citrus, pine. Medium body, average carbonation, light bitter finish. 230418
3.1 Just a run of the mill IPA. Clean and hoppy, but there's nothing to distinguish it.
3.6 On tap at lucky dog brew in Charlotte. Hoppy with good balance and easy drinking.
3.4 12floz bottle, BOD: 11.02.2018, $1.75 unit cost, pint glass. Golden IPA with a tangerine and apricot aroma. Earthy and citrus rind bitterness takes preeminence in a palate that is medium in body. Decent.
3.2 Pours clear bright yellow with a thick porcelain head that hangs around for a while and even pillows a bit. Shy aroma presents resiny hops and a mix of citrus and tropical fruit. Bolder flavor delivers all of the above, while tossing in a little hop bitterness and some zesty fresh malt. Mouthfeel features typical body and jazzy fizz. Old Skool, Nu Skool, it's all good.
3.2 bottled - clear to cloudy yellow color. Citrus, pine, hop aroma. Pine and hop flavor that could use some sweetness to balance it out.
3.6 Can from Total Wine. Can filled June 27th, 2017. So clearly Total Wine continues their disregard for fresh beer, turning this nu skool ipa into an aged. Pours saffron gold. Thin skin of foam across the golden. Nice angular & tropical ipa. Bitterness is subdued & the hops are bright & expressive. Can only imagine if this was fresh. Good stuff!
4.1 Bright golden color, big bird on Sesame Street. Just as friendly and unassuming going down. Mr. Snuffaluffafus is this beers best friend. Grassy hops mixed with tropical hops, a perfect partner for curry shrimp or jerk chicken.
3.9 Hoppy and slightly bitter, lots of citrus zest, pine, and resin. Balanced and not too over the top.
3.3 Bottle->SA. Brite clear gold with moderate white head. A: citrus and floral hops, grass, fern, mild citrus peel, caramel hops. T: citrus hops, watery, with some mild pine, forest, rhododendron. Mild caramel malt. Thin, touch too bitter for the body. Eh.
3.5 12 ounce can purchased at Total Wine Pembroke Pines, FL from variety pack @ $19.99/15-pack. Very good.
3.2 Light yellow color, nose of tropical fruits. Slight bittet taste with an almost pale character. Slight bitter picks up on finish. Smooth and easy drinking.
4.7 Incredible, one of the better IPA's i've had, hence the score. Aromatic , great odor, delicious crisp taste. Growler from Hopsy.
3.0 Hop hop hop away. Good tasting, more than welcomed aroma. Enjoyable on a nice chill night; or when getting a buzz lightyear.
3.2 bottle @ Party Town / Florence KY --- Hazy light amber color, , white head that drops to a frothy cover, lace bands. Typical IPA with light malt, combination citrus/pine hops on the swallow, then malt slowly returning in a long finish.
3.6 Tap @ BOT. Clear golden coloured. Citric, grapefruits, bit of caramel.. Classic ipa.
4.0 Very nice IPA in a 12oz canned variety pack. The beer poured a light golden color with a fluffy, white head. The head left some sticky lacing around the glass. The nose, as well as the flavors, were very woody and spicy. The finish left a bit of spiky, hop-resin-like flavor with notes of pine and grapefruit.
3.8 12oz bottle from Wegman's, West Seneca. A slightly hazy amber pour with a thin white head; fresh tropical fruit aroma; sweet fruity taste that fills the mouth with pineapple and mango and has a nicely offset bitterness; followed by a sweet fruity malt finish. Rather good.
4.2 Very bright spicy tropical aroma. Soft juiciness and a bit of light pepper and some nice fruitiness with a bit of zest and some grapefruit and kiwi. There's almost a noble quality on the back. Has a bit of stone fruit and some light grassiness. Really bright, pleasant beer.
3.2 Tap at brewz, j'ville. Pours clear gold with a thin white head. Light, fruity aroma - passion fruit, orange. Medium body, medium carb. Light caramel, pine, lemon, some tanniny bitterness. Basic, but drinkable.
4.0 COD 11/27/17 (?) Pours a hazy gold with a touch of amber. Very good head volume, outstanding lacing and retention. Very good nose of blended hops. Tropicals are the most prevalent (pineapple and mango). Light citrus notes of lemon and orange plus a fair dose of tangerine. Underneath is a soft biscuit sweetness that falls short of cracker. The only thing keeping this from scoring outstanding is intensity. Heavy light body that has a nice slightly oily texture. Outstanding carbonation / body balance. The middle is nicely effervescent while the finish is prickly. The flavor profile is outstanding with a kicker but falls just short of quite outstanding. The big surprise is the amount and nature of the bitterness. The nose was deceptive. This IPA tastes like an IPA and has a moderate bitterness that is spruce, pine and sweet zest (not grapefruit)...NICE. Like the nose, hop flavors are blended but if you search, you can find all noted in the nose. The middle rises to a soft nice sweetness where the tropical hops rule, while the sharper hops appeared in the beginning. The sweetness slowly fades away while the robustly flavored bitterness takes center stage. The finish is a slow fade of sweet with bitter lasting into a classic IPA linger. I had to guess on the month of bottling, I just couldn't read it clearly.
3.7 Draught at Lexington Hop Cat. Clean orange color. Very bright. Crisp and hoppy with citrus finish. Low malt. Nice.
3.4 bottle, rated in June 2017 - Gold pour. Aroma is mainly citrusy hops. The flavor has lots of crisp, bitter, citrus rich hops. It's medium bodied and while not great, is a solid IPA.
3.8 pours a clear rich gold with a thick bubbly white head. Citrus and sweet floral aroma. Tropical fruits and citrus flavor. Really good. Oily on the lips. moderately bitter finish and linger. Good beer.
2.9 Light golden in color with good lacing on glass. Reminds me of a “light” IPA with very a very fruity profile.
3.6 can. golden with one finger head. light to medium body, tropical, citrus and pine. solid IPA with good bitterness.
