Southern Tier Oat

Southern Tier Oat

“brewed for the harvest”
This beer begins in spring when oat seeds are sown as soon as the
soil can be worked. Meanwhile, select types of barley are planted with
hopes that Mother Nature will be kind. Our brewers wait patiently until
the legumes are mature and ready for the scythe. Upon delivery to the
brewery, these ingredients are mixed together in the mash tun where
they steep, creating a rich molasses-like liquid. Spicy hops are boiled
with the thick brew, giving balance and complexity. Brewers yeast feasts
upon the rich sugars, concluding its transformation into oatmeal stout.
Pour Oat into a snifter, allow its thick tan head to slowly rise, releasing
unbridled aromas. The color of Oat is as dark as a moonless night. The
first sip reveals Oat’s thick and nourishing taste. Like a haversack to a
horse, a bottle of this stout is a meal in itself. Enjoy responsibly.

4.1 Drought. Inky black with small foamy brown head, sour cherry aroma, tastes like roasted malt and cherries, low carbonation, bit of a vanilla flavor, longish finish with alcohol aftertaste on palate.
4.3 Transfer from BA review on 10-22-12- Poured from bomber into snifter glass Appearance – The beer pours a deep-brown nearly black color with a tiny thin wisp of tan foam. The foam fades very fast to leave almost no lacing. Upon swirling the beer in the glass it is seen to be quite sticky with it slowly sliding down the sides of the glass back to the body of the beer. Smell – The aroma is lighter then would have been anticipated. It was largest of a sweeter caramel and roasted malt aroma. There are notes of oat and some chocolate and coffee mixed with in. A light alcohol aroma is present as well rounding out the smell. Taste – The taste begins rather sweet. It starts of caramel with a sweeter chocolate and roasted malt flavor. Toward the middle of the flavor, an oat flavor comes to the tongue with some darker fruit flavors of plum and raisin. It has a very nice flavor here and then transitions nicely to a very different, but equally pleasurable flavor blend. Bitter chocolate, coffee, and roasted malt come at the end with many of the sweeter flavors losing some strength. When combined with the oat flavor as well as a light alcohol flavor, it creates a roasted, dark, bitter, warming feel on the tongue. It is quite nice. Mouthfeel – The brew coats the mouth and smothers it in all its great flavors. The body of the beer is chewy and thick with a lower level of carbonation level. The feel is fantastic for the bitter and dark flavors of the beer, as well as the warming alcohol taste. Overall – Very nice. I love the smooth flavor transitions in this one. It starts out sweet and then moves to more roasty and bitter. The feel helps with both the great flavors as well as the transition of those flavors. Really a tasty and enjoyable beer to drink. Grab one, sit back and sip slowly.
3.5 The body has a very dark black color which I can’t even see through. On top of this opaque body sits a small tan head which fades quickly leaving just a ring of lace. Glass lacing is minimal and very slick. The aroma is over the top sweet and roasty. It’s heavy on roasted barely, burnt caramel and dark toast. I also pick up light notes of toffee and hard butterscotch candy. The flavor sweet sweet sweet!!! It has a full bodied hit of sticky sweet roasted malt that delivers notes of burnt caramel, burnt toast and burnt raisins. Molasses and chocolate also hit the sweet tooth and then everything hooks up with the boozy alcohol and rides slowly off into the finish. The palate is smooth creamy and sticky all at the same time and the carbonation offers little help in lifting this feeling.
4.0 Bottle. Nearly black pour with a thick mocha head. Creamy chocolate and raisin aroma. Lots of chocolate in the flavour, smooth oats, a touch of coffee and dark fruits. Full bodied and very flavourful, but perhaps a touch sweet. Nearly perfect.
3.7 Draft to taster. Looks good; a dark cola with foamy beige head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells of dark malt and chocolate with a touch of oats. Tastes like it smells, but with a bit more of an oatmeal presence. Nice and smooth on the palate. A good example of the style.
3.5 Black to dark brown. chocolate, espresso barley, roasted malts. Body is not very full and not very complex. Okay!
4.1 bomber pour..dark brownish black hue..nose is quite good..like an oatmeal cookie with chocolate chips..has plenty of barrel aging notes as well despite I believe not spending time in a barrel? taste is chocolatey smooth with the oat backbone..smooth slightly boozy..goes down pretty easily despite the high abv..very impressed with this offering
4.1 An excellent beer from Southern Tier. Pours deep black color. Strong aroma of dark chocolate and roasted malt. A mellow beer with a high ABV. Amingst the best oak stouts. Highly recommended.
3.9 Pours an opaque, very dark brown with a thick, rich, mocha colored head. Chocolate, spent coffee grounds, and date nose. Thick, chewy mouthfeel. Taste approximates the nose. Nice bitterness seamlessly transitions from and balances the sweetness.
4.3 Loads of oats and hops in the aroma. Pitch black. Incredibly drinkable for 11%. Fantastic balance. Very american! Awesome stuff
4.0 If I had to, and I mean really had to like I was being strong armed and backed into a corner I could probably declare a favorite personal beer style. Though chances of that scenario playing out are slim to none thanks to the NSA having my back 365. Oatmeal Stouts, they are what’s up. I said it. Look at all the highest ratings… See a trend? You can do so much with a stout that you are unable to do with any other beer style period. Oatmeal Stout+ Southern Tier= Ungodly Fruit. Brew pours an oily abyss. Light brown copper where the liquid meets the glass. Decent khaki head that dissipates rapidly. Intense chocolate and raison on the aroma. Oatmeal is present on the pallet but accompanied by toasty malts and raison. This is a thick and hearty beer, it should be respected at 10.5 percent. The velvety smooth finish and texture work wonders hiding the otherwise austere alcohol percent. Again another example of an Oatmeal Stout that does work.
4.5 650ml Flasche.
Eccezionale!
4.3 Bottle from Bottle Shop, Canterbury [080114] Pitch black, no light through, dark tan head dissipates, some lacing Aroma - soft roast, rich dark malts, very slight alcohol Taste - Rich dark malts, mellow soft roast, chocolate, alcohol very well hidden, slight soy, yummy dark sweet malts, so mellow for the abv, soft bitter hops, yum yum malts Palate - soft carb, full rich body, quite sweet but not too much. Finish very smooth, rich deep dark malts, chocolate, mellow roast, superb soft chocolate caramel malts Overall - Fantastic impy, very smooth, booze well hidden...I’m liking it more than the Choklat
3.7 Dark black, thick pour... Aroma of roasted malts, dark chocolate, oats, coffee... Flavor is fairly sweet throughout, oats, chocolate, roasted malts... Lots of residual sugars, burnt malt notes... Solid
3.7 Agradable olor a café, cacao, vainilla. Sabe a café fuerte y chocolate amargo, ligeramente a madera, muy negra, cremosa, da gusto beberla, va bien con muchas cosas
4.3 Beautiful thick black pour. Aroma is fairly sweet and chocolatey. Taste is very smooth, chocolate, roasted malt, with some light bitterness in the finish. Very nice.
4.0 Bottled 12OCT11 Black with mahogany edges and only a rim of tan foam. Licorice, molasses and dark fruits on the nose with a lower dose of sweetness in the nose than say, choklat or creme brulee. Flavor is of oats and molasses and dark malts with some nice soily character. The beer is chewy and resonant in finish with a moderate carb and has the potential to fill a belly. The 10.8% ABV doesn’t even shine whatsoever. Serving type: bottle 03-29-2012
4.1 The aroma combines hints of raisins, chocolate, booze, and caramel malts, and the appearance is an opaque black color with a small tan ring on top of the liquid. The taste fuses a mild sweetness, slight bitterness, and quite a bit of umami; however, the palate is very indulgent as it combines a medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, and a long malty finish
3.3 Good stout. Not great. A little on the sweet side. I have found that all of the southern tier stouts I've hade are that way. I liked it better than jahva.
4.0 I had this at Global Brew. Pours black with tan head. Taste chocolate, oats, I thought this was good. I could drink this again.
3.9 beige head that disappears with some lacing. coffee colour. aroma of oat, butter, sweet, alcohol. taste like aroma with a sweet finish. medium body and carbonation, quite dense mouthfeel. bottle 65 cl
4.2 22oz bottle, deep black color, with a beige head, with a mild roasted, chocolate, black malt, mochaish, faint espresso nose, with a fruity, oat, oat chocolate chip cookie dough, vanilla, milk chocolate accent, with some spicy licorice, semi-sweet chocolate baking bar, light dark dried fruit notes in the aroma follows thorugh on -full-bodied palate with a sweet, smooth toasted, black, chocolate, roasted, caramel malt, mocha, oatmeal chocolate cake, light fudgy, burnt fruitcake, chocolate icecream character, with some boozy chocolate liqueur, chocolate chip cookie dough, faint licorice, cocoa, coffee flavours, leading towards a chocolatey, fudgy, coffee, brownie, lingering roasty bitterness finish.
4.0 Aroma is dark malts, oats/grains and vinous notes. The flavor is dark malts, coffee, strong caramel/toffee, oily and a big acidic/tart finish.
4.1 A: Dark Brown Hue, Passes No Light, Off White Head Ring, Some Lacing S: Oatmeal, Mild Coffee, Mild Chocolate Malts T: Chocolate Malts, Oatmeal, Mild Coffee M: Decent Carbonation, Medium to Full Bodied, Mild Drying, Mild Bitter Overall, a nice oatmeal stout with good flavors and well balanced.
3.9 Definitely has a strong aroma and taste of oats. There is a mild alcohol taste but it’s not overwhelming.
2.6 I love oatmeal stouts and was excited for this beer. Pour appears disappointingly thin bodied but I certainly approve of the impenetrable black color and brown creamy head that is quick to dissipate. Smells like raisins and alcohol, reminds me of the crème brule stout minus the sugary flavors. My afraid based off the smell that the alcohol wont be well hidden it is 10.8%. Not so bad, does taste mostly like raisins with a bitter caramel malt. Alcohol taste is moderate, carbonation is kind of heavy, some complexity. A little to strong and sweet for my taste getting through the 22 will be a project
4.0 Nice thick creaminess. Alcohol hidden as if its not there. One from the brewery I like the best.
4.2 Dark, thick pour from a bomber bottle with about an inch and a half of tan head. Mainly oats, as the name suggests, on the nose. As it warms it loses bitterness and develops bold vanilla middle and raisin finish. Can taste a little alcohol on the finish. Solid, solid oat stout and my first oatmeal imperial stout.
4.1 Black opaque pour from bomber bottle, tan foam that persists, although slight. Dark fruit aroma, vanilla middle. Taste of raisin, vanilla, oats at the end. Bitterness disappears as it warms.
