Southern Tier Porter

Southern Tier Porter

Hearty malts meld with a subtle balance of hops to create a dark and nurturing ale of comfort and complexity. Hints of bittersweet chocolate and espresso fill the tongue, finishing with just a touch of smoke. Not too sweet or filling, this versatile dark ale dissuades the notion that a darker beer is a stronger beer. Five varieties of roasted malts are the source of Porter’s dark color and rich taste, while two varieties of hops bring a mellow bite to this deep toasty ale.

FOOD PAIRINGS: Particularly tasty with slow-cooked meats, grilled cheese, smoked sausage. Pairs well with chocolate desserts, pumpkin pie, cheesecake.

3.8 DATE: March 29, 2016... OCCASION: watching Gone Girl with Shan on a Spring Break Tuesday... GLASSWARE: Kisatsky’s Tavern pint... APPEARANCE: midnight black, cola-clinging bubbles adorn the glass... off-white head forms at a staunch, quarter-inch... coral fingers stretch as the glass drains... AROMA: malty, chocolaty suggestions early, with toasted cereal grains... not much hops to speak of, but not the point of th porter... PALATE: creamy, with a coffeeish body that adds texture at the throat... lactic milk smoothness .pervades the experience...TASTE: peat, coffee, some vegetable, and lactic suggestions... a strong, smoky flavor lingers at its end... OVERALL: not as memorable as the majority of the Southern Tier offerings, but this is sufficient for what is needed from a porter...
3.7 Deep brown appearance with an average size beige head and modest lacing. Aroma of roasted coffee, dark chocolate and caramel malts. Earthy, dusky, bitter flavor amid some smoke. Aftertaste is like a rich, chewy brownie. Medium bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel; lingering finish.
3.2 Aroma is light, roasted malt, coffee, some chocolate. Appearance is dark brown, light tan head. Taste is super light, a light roasted malt, light chocolate, coffee, nothing. Mouthfeel is thin, light to medium body with light carbonation, aftertaste fades quickly. Overall, this is about par for a porter.
3.7 Bottle from Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a clear dark reddish brown with a thin broken light tan head. The aroma is big chocolate, light smoked malt. The flavour is moderate sweet light bitter with a light, slightly watery liqourice malt, dry coffee, light chocolate palate. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.
3.4 Bottle into tulip glass, opaque dark brown color, some reddish hue, with tan head. Aroma notes of heavy roasted malt, light coffee and chocolate and a tad smoke. Taste adds more coffee/chocolate, ash and light earthy bitterness. Light-medium body, moderate carbonation, lively, tad astringent with short earthy roast finish. Solid porter but nothing really stands out, which is nice sometimes.
4.0 Dark mahogany pour with thin off-white top and minimal lacing. Rich aromas of malt, roast. Flavors are malty with just a bit of smokiness. A bit too carbonated and thin to really get a good rich mouthfeel though. Not bad, but there are better close by on the shelf.
3.4 This poured a darker brown with a beige head. Aroma was of lightly ashy roasted malt and some caramel. Flavor similar, a bit watery and disjointed.
3.7 Bottle in pint glass from Downtown Discount Beverage in Dover, NH. Aroma is light bready malt with hint of grassy hops. Appearance is very dark mahogany--almost opaque, with surprisingly robust sparkle and 1 finger-width foamy head and nice minimal lacing. Taste is more lightly sweet than lightly bitter with a lingering pleasant long bitter finish. Palate is medium bodied with thin texture, average carbonation. Overall, I’ve come to expect a lot from this brewer and thought they’d knock this out of the park. It is OK but there are a lot of better porters out there.
3.4 Bottle. Dark brown color, medium off white head. Aroma of dark coffee, cocoa. Taste is roasty, fairly light body. Not bad.
3.1 330ml bottle from Gonzo Beer, Coventry. Aroma is toasted malt and spice. There is also a touch of smoke. Taste starts sweet with a smoky bitter finish.
3.3 bottle. Deep brown with one finger head. Chocolate malt with light roast. Not as bitter as a lot of porters. Pretty average.
3.2 Bottle. Pours black with a small tan head. Smells of coffee, metal, fish. Taste is coffee and creamy chocolate.
2.9 355ml Flasche. Schwarz und klar. Grosse, schöne Schaumkrone. Leichtes Karamellaroma. Süsser Nachgeschmack.
2.9 Opaque black with a mid sized head. Good retention. Aroma containing notes of roast, malt, and dark chocolate. Relatively light bodied for a porter. Dark chocolate, malt, and roast coalesce with a mildly hoppy and dry finish. Average.
3.5 12 oz bottle. Dark brown pour with a small light tan head that leaves a fair amount of lacing. Aroma of dark chocolate, dark coffee, and toasted malts. Taste is pretty much the same as aroma except a slight bitterness at the end. Quick finish of cocoa and malt. Medium body, slightly chewy texture, average carbonation. Definitely more robust than most porters with a heavier, almost imperial stout like taste. Very nice!
3.5 Bottle @ NYC Craft Beer Festival. Dark inky brown with small off-white head, caramel aroma, low carbonation, roasted malt - caramel taste, long bitter finish. Good but the roasted bitterness was too predominant.
4.0 Pours black with a light khaki head. Aromas of coffee and some malt sweetness. Taste of coffee, malt sweetness and a little smokiness. Thin mouth feel with nice lacing in the glass. Overall very nice example of an American style porter.
2.7 12oz bottle, fridge temp. dark brown, almost no head. smells like a lager with roasted malts addd. Very weak body, weak taste, lager yeast for some reason. not sure what else to add. just not a fan of this one.
4.4 Aroma: Roasted coffee, cocoa, and toasted malts. Appearance: Black with a tan head that dissipates quickly. Taste: Light sweetness with a medium sourness. Palate: Medium body, dry texture, soft carbonation, dry finish. Overall: A bit too dry, but still very rich and complex. I enjoyed this one a lot.
2.9 Smooth and balanced. Somewhat malty but no other dominating characteristics. Easy drinking, good-to-style porter.
3.5 On tap. Black color with one finger off white head. Chocolate and coffee aroma. Lighter coffee taste, not over powering.
3.9 A nice beer all around. Nice dark rich pour with a full light khaki head. Nose is roasted malts and some dark fruits. A little plums and maybe raspberry. Flavor has a little sweetness added to the roast. Some lighter sweetness, like candy sugar and molasses. Smooth finish with a nice medium body. I dig it.
3.7 Dark brown with thin tan head and lacing. Big roasted malts in the nose, along with chocolate and coffee. Nice slightly bitter flavor along with aforementioned scents. Decent.
3.7 12 oz bottle. Poured a deep brown color with a small tan head. Aroma is roasted grains and malts, light chocolate notes. Light coffee, some bitter cocoa, light brown sugar. Pretty tasty and a solid porter.
4.8 Pours deep, rich black, nice toasty flavor. Great representation of the style. Most craft brewers seem fixated on adding a twist to classic styles to make them stand out, often the embellishment is more of a distraction than anything else. This is just a good, classic porter.
3.7 Black pour from 12oz bottle to Maudite glass at home. Roasty, coffee, and malty aroma. Has a sweet and milky taste. Mild hints of cocoa and coffee, slight fruit ending. Toasty and pretty tasty too.
3.7 Draught at Craft Beer Co, Clerkenwell on 19 Jun 2012. Poured a really deep ruby, near black, with a dense beige head. Aroma was fairly light, considering, with some dark malt, roasted nuts and mild smoke. Roasted malt flavours, with some coffee and brown sugar. Finish was espresso, dark chocolate and ash.
3.6 sampled on tap at olbaren and bottled from beergeek. dark brown with a purple tinge and light head; aroma of chocolate crackles, hints of ribena and smoke; roasty flavour - instant coffee, burnt toast. pretty decent
3.4 Tasted half a bottle with Con. Nice roasted malt and full body. Definitely looking forward to having my own bottle shortly.
