Spanish Peaks Black Dog Ale

Spanish Peaks Black Dog Ale

An English style special amber ale. This ale’s full body imparts a distinctive malty, robust palate and fruity bouquet. Brewed from pale malted barley, Munich, crystal, carastan and a touch of chocolate malts, Pacific Northwest hops, water and ale yeast.

Editor’s Note: Production moved to Glacier Brewing in Polson, MT in 2005, continued together with Flying Dog in Colorado and then Flying Goose in Maryland, MD as well in 2006. Entire production moved to City Brwery in WI in the summer of 2007. In 2009 the production was moved to Olde Saratoga in NY, Butte Creek in CA and Weston, MO.

3.0 Bottle 355ml Pours cloudy brown/dark amber with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, grain, caramel and floral hops. Taste is light to medium sweet and light bitter. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.
2.8 12-oz. Pours a crystal clear ruddied medium amber. Loose whitish head. Biscuits and aluminum on the nose. Fairly light medium body, not quite watery but definitely not creamy either. Mild carb. Caramel, aluminum, and biscuit mid palate. Mild metallic finish.
2.9 Deep amber brown. Aroma and flavors of toffee, roasted malt, coffee, slight vanilla. Dry finish, very English feeling. Unremarkable, but not terrible.
3.3 Bottle. Weak aroma of chocolate. Tastes slightly dry, somewhat sweet with a light finish. Has light chocolate and orange zest flavors to it. Pretty easy to drink, nothing too nice but won’t knock it. 5.2% alcohol.
2.7 Pours dark ruby/brown, off white head. Aroma has notes of crystal malt, touch of metal, acidity, and some roast. Taste is some crystal, roast, touch of sweet caramel, but is offset by the weird metal and acid that comes through. Either infected a touch of just off flavors in the beer.
1.9 Bottle. Very dark amber color, slightly cloudy, with an off white head. Aroma is metallic and slightly sour. Some hops and malt come through as well. Taste is pretty offputting. Sweet, salty, and metallic, with something else I can’t quite figure out. Very bitter towards the end. Slick texture, light body. Not a big fan of this.
3.2 Pours copper with a fine beige collar lacing ornately. Caramel and milk choc dripped on pear aroma with some wood and vegetal nuttiness. Toffee and milk choc-coated raisin flavour with a sluice of pear, choc orange and berry fruit. Soapy alkalinity, coffee specks. Tasty, discreetly fruity, authentically English...erm, brown ale I’d say.
3.2 roasty, coffee hues in an amber visage...first taste is a bit fruity and very pleasing...the palate left a lot to be desired and in the end I was ready to move on to another beer, although decent not exceptional...
3.0 Bottle pours amber with an off-white head. Aroma is sweet with notes of caramel, bread, light florals, and possibly some berry. Flavor shows the same with a touch of earth. Overall body is moderate with a lightly bitter finish.
3.5 You gotta love a beer with a picture of a dog on the bottle. Dogs and beer, mans two best friends.
1.8 Damn! - this came out of the bottle looking pretty decent. A nice looking amber with a big frothy head. Aroma is ok. However, the flavor is very, very strange. One minute it is sickly sweet and malty and the next there’s a very bitter aftertaste. I am getting ready to pour this one! (Wisconsin bottle)
3.3 A strong flavor, very stout tasting. Bought after work one day, and I felt as though guiness was the choice that should have been made. seemed kind of sour, perhaps the six pack was older than expected??
2.8 Wild beer alert! Pours a clear reddish-brown with an ENORMOUS four-finger pillowy beige head that has moderate retention and solid windowpane lacing. Aroma is lightly floral, with hints of the various malts. Flavor brings a little metallic twang on a bed of crystal malt and not much else. Simple brew, simple flavors, not bad, but nothing too memorable. In tonight’s battle of dog-labeled brews, this is a distant DISTANT second to Ellie’s Brown.
2.6 Clear reddish amber, thick creamy beige head, foamy lacing. Floral aroma with hint of malt. Similar in taste with the scale tipped toward the hop side. Bitter aftertaste.
2.7 Serving: 12 oz. bottle from Total Wine Sterling. It pours a clear amber color with a foamy, off-white head. Lesser head retention. The nose is on the lighter side with notes of grain, sweet malt, florals, and caramel. The flavor is weak and follows the nose with the malt sweetness and caramel notes being a little more pronounced. Light to medium body with a short finish. Overall it’s rather on the tasteless side. Skip it.
3.1 07/2007: The color is a deep mahogany red with a nice pillowy head. Quite clear despite the depth of the color. It’s got a really reach clear look to it. Minimal lace. The smell is a bitter amber malt. Quite bitter in fact. Hops are but a mild accent; bitter, yet also a tad flowery and sweet. Decent, but not amazing. The taste is a bitter German amber malt. Sharp bitter malt flavor. Hops are really scarce here. Slight dark berry accent, but mostly dark, bitter malt. A bit roasted as well. Feels dry and ashy. Bitter at the end, leaving a thick film. It is a bitter red amber. Hard to have too many because of it’s thickness and bitterness. Decent, not the greatest. Serving type: bottle

2.7 Bottle. Poured an amber color with a little white head. Aroma was faint hops, some caramel, and malts. Flavor was thin and watery. Some caramel and sweetness. Aftertaste was some bitter. Not a whole lot to this beer.
3.5 (br-btl br-lbl rd-txt w/ field and dog, "Spanish Peaks Brewing Company in MT and CO", 5.2%) lct-ambr, roasty, sweet, floral-hops, balanced.
3.3 Tasted at Beer Dabbler event in St. Paul. Very nice aroma, malt and grain carries straight into the flavor. Easy drinking.
2.6 Not impressed with this one. Kinda weak and watery. Reminds me of a weaker terrapin india brown.
2.7 12oz bottle. clear ruby pour with a thin light tan head. aroma of dark fruits, caramel and honey. taste is the same with a light hop bitterness in the background. comes off a little watered down with a mineral aftertaste.
2.4 translucent caramel color, small off white head, lacy. chocalte ans sweet malt in the nose. flavor is chaocalte, sweet malt and metal. thin bodied, metalic after taste. not very interesting, fun or good. single bottle purchase from binny’s orland park.
3.2 Dark red-brown, light beige head. Big fruity aroma, toffee, some herbal hops. Taste is more fruit, apples, cherries, caramel, toffee, light herbal bitter finish.
3.1 Bottle. Pours an amber body with a white head. Sweet malty with a hint of floral hoppiness. Earthy nutty finish. Nice.
3.0 this was a nice beer, no hidden flavors or qualties, just a nice amber ale, almost a pale ale, but with too much nut/malt flavor to be a true pale. I’d do it again in the fall, seems to be a colder weather type beer.
3.5 Pours a very nice solid amber with ample white head. Flavor has a nice balance of non-agressive hops, subtle dark malts, slightly caramelized sugar, and positive energy. I liked this beer. Fun to drink.
3.4 12oz bottle. Pours a nice dark amber though not much head. Good malty caramel taste. Very drinkable.
3.1 Very much in the English-style pale category, the malt character on this beer is the real winner. Well balanced with a rise of bittering hops in the finish, the nose of this beer tells of grape, apricot and toffee. Nice bready with a hint of sweetness adds a layer of complexity that might have been otherwise squashed had the brewer chosen a more aggressive hop profile. nicely done!
2.9 TAP: clear amber pour, malt/bread aroma. A little caramel on taste, moderate hop profile, lighter body.
