Spearhead Hawaiian Style Pale Ale

Spearhead Hawaiian Style Pale Ale

Introducing the Hawaiian Style Pale Ale™

Aloha from Hawaii! As the name suggests, this bold, hoppy West Coast pale ale is brewed Hawaiian style—with pineapple. We stopped at nothing to create this perfectly "imbalanced" and supremely delicious pale ale. The Hawaiian Style Pale Ale is naturally carbonated, unfiltered and dry-hopped to provide a delicate carbonation and complex flavour and bouquet. Hints of caramel, honey and biscuit give way to notes of fresh citrus, zest and pine and a refreshingly tropical finish.

Serving Suggestion
The Hawaiian Style Pale Ale should be served cool (5-10°C) from a tulip style glass.

Food Pairings
Hawaiian Style Pale Ale’s citrusy, fresh character makes it a versatile beer for food pairings. Enjoy a glass with spicy Indian and South-East Asian dishes. Pair with hearty pub fare and allow its zesty hoppiness to refresh your palate. Indulge in rich, creamy cheeses, some decadent chocolate or a thick slice of cheesecake to bring out the beer’s caramel and tropical sweetness. On its own it is dry, refreshing and perfectly quenching.

2.7 This ipa poured a light amber colour with a creamy, off white head. Scents include must, oats and leather. Light lacing. First swig was malty with flavours of tea and light fruit. Finish was a little bitter with that musty tea flavour lingering.
3.9 Excellente Pale Ale. Petit goût de noisette, nez léger noix, bois. Col léger.
3.5 Pours deep amber with a thin white head. Aroma is malty and, as expected, full of pineapple. Taste is bitter with moderate sweetness underneath. There are notes of pineapple, nutty malt and grapefruit rind. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. It’s got plenty of depth but it’s a little disjointed.
3.9 Yup this is really good. Got the hint of pineapple seemed appropriate on this first real summer day. Very solid pale ale taken up a tick. Typically not a fan of flavoured beers. Buy this one it is real good.
3.6 Pours a very thick frothy and bubbly head that stays for a while and dissipates to a thin layer. Has a pretty cloudy golden amber appearance. Good lacing. Very strong floral and citrus hop aromas, of the cascade variety. Flavours are mainly citrus hops with lots of tangy orange and mild mango. Also a fair amount of floral hops and a bit of light spices. For a beer brewed with pineapple juice, it is very well blended as to being slightly faint. Notes of malted barley, pine, and toasty malts. Slight tingling and warming sensation. Medium bodied, dry hopped. Really good and has a nice bitterness to it.
1.3 Keg at Ottawa Winter Brewfest. Disclaimer: This event used plastic cups, which may have prevented my ability to fully appreciate this beer. Hazy dark amber, mid sized head. Cardboardy nose. Mid sweet with medium body and clean mouthfeel. Cardboard and... wet paper. Metallic finish. Eh.
3.2 At a tasting, thanks, small stable bubbly head, hazy orange color with yellow taints, aroma of fruit Popsicle and some citrus, flavor of melon with some herbal bitterness and a hint of soapiness. Nice and easy but not too complex.
3.1 Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks troubles. Hazy golden. Aroma of slightly stale citric hops. Flavor has a bit of sweetish malt, and bitter citric hops, a bit stale. Medium-bodied.
3.0 355ml bottle. Golden orange in colour with a good sized and long lasting white head, good lacing. Aroma is of light pineapple, lemons, some grains. The flavour is earthy, floral, light fruits and citrus. Lightly bitter mouthfeel, medium/light body, medium carbonation. Finishes lightly bitter, some hop. Just ok in my books, seems a bit fake.
3.5 0.5 draft. Delicately hazy, light brown color abd a small, off-white head. Aroma of hops, pines, flowers. Taste is rather hoppy, floral, a tad bready too. Medium body, slick texture, and a soft carbonation. Finish is sweeter, more balanced, seems more consummate. Overall not a bad beer but it did not strike me as particularly awesome.
3.6 Bottled. Nice beer! I don’t get why they had to add pineapple, as I’ve had other IPAs that are way more fruity than this. It has a mellow aroma but a sparkle of flavors. Not too full, but the finish grows on you!
4.1 The aroma is fruity but the flavour is much more robust, with juicy citrus and pineapple most pronounced. Bitter and summery at the same time. Nice.
4.3 Dark, brown, thick foamy head. Smells like pineapples and dry cascade hops but not too obviously fruity or bitter. The taste is bitter at first followed by citrus and then pineapple sweetness. A sessionable dark ale, easy to appreciate and enjoy.
3.2 Draught @ Stout Irish Pub, Toronto. Pours slightly hazy amber with small white head, Clear aroma of malt and hops, with fruity and estery touches and citric hints. Bitter, hoppy flavour with estery notes and touches of malt and fruit, possibly orange peel as well. Mild, estery and slightly fruity aftertaste. Low carbonation. Refreshing and agreeable but not top-notch.
3.9 Pours a pale amber with a foamy white head, very pleasing to the eye. Some pine, citrus, and pineapple on the nose. Very light bodied ale, very refreshing. Taste is very interesing, nice amount of bitterness from the hops to play alongside the tropical pineapple flavor. Made me think it was summer for a moment!
4.1 355ml bottle from the LCBO. Hazy gold body which is subtlety tinted brown. Pineapple, pine, grapefruit on the nose. It is also malty with some caramel coming through a little bit. A nice dryness on the palate, however it doesn’t take away from the overall sessionable quality of this beer. Quite hoppy, medium to elevated perceived bitterness that finishes long with some grapefruit zest, predominantly. Some floral qualities as well.
3.4 My Bottom Line: Silky tropical fruit dominate this smooth New World Pale Ale, ending up in earthy hop resins and their just bitterness. Further Personal Perceptions: -A sheet of foam tops the misty amber. -Malts offer but light caramel, without much definition. -Drinkability is quite high. -This is well-made, but it lacks depth and subtleties. On tap at The Black Tomato.
3.3 Poured a hazy amber with fun yeasty swirls floating around and had a big frothy off white head, very good lacing on this brew. Aroma was of pineapple, tropical hops and pine. Tastes of sugar, pine, and the pineapple hits you at the end. Had a light body with a refreshing amount of bitterness at the end.
3.3 Quite an enjoyable lil affair to down. A mellow, hazy copper with a frothy head that left a lace legacy behind. Light pine, citrus and caramel comprised the enjoyable aromatics. Sweeter than expected, a white grapefruit flavour was prominent here, a low bitterness trailing. The mouthfeel was softer than expected but a bittersweet aftertaste made this a solid serious session sip.
3.5 Poured from 12 oz. bottle. Slightly hazy, orange-amber with a 3-finger off-white head that leaves random blotches of lacing. Aroma of citrus, caramel, pineapple and a touch of floral hops. Taste of citrus, pineapple, caramel, tropical fruit, pine resin and a touch of floral hops. Medium body and medium carbonation.
4.3 Orange with a thin white lacy head. Smells of tropical fruit, juicy melon, honey, and caramel. Tastes more citrus with pineapple and a sharp peppery finish with a lingering sweetness. A bit our sourness in the finish is a bit off. I want to drink it. Delicious
0.8 Glass, 4-ounce, draught, during the Mondial de la bière, savoured on June 13 2014; eye: caramel with an orangey hue, lightly hazy, tiny ring of tan head, no lacing; nose: sour, infected; mouth: sour, infected; overall: why serve infected beer?
(1176-070814)
3.7 On tap at the Ottawa Beerfest. Hawaiian Style Pale Ale served in my 5$ Spearhead tasting snifter. Their flagship beer pours an opaque copper-orange. The nose is a burst of  piney orange citrus hops. Not sure what they mean by Hawaiian but this is quite good. It has a crisp mouthfeel of palate cleansing bitterness, It’s  a clean bitter hoppy pale ale with a solid malt backbone.
3.6 Pours avhazy golden red colour with a small long lasting white head. Nose of citrus hop. Mainly grapefruit. Not overly hoppy finish it has the nose of a ipa but no lingering hop. Sweet medium mouthfeel. Very good!
3.9 Pours a rich gold with clean white head, fizzy and slightly creamy. This beer has a lot going on. Nose is tropical fruit, citrus, and most notably and unsurprisingly, pineapple. Oddly, though, pineapple is not a predominant taste. Fairly high carbonation, the first sip is sweet citrus, grapefruit, tropical fruit, and a subtle hint of pineapple. Finish is very dry with sweet citrus, rind, tropical fruit and a nice piney bitterness. The hop profile is really, really nice, but it lacked a bit of malt character/backbone, for my liking. Great beer for hopheads, and extremely sessionable, but for me it was just shy of exceptional. Great summer beer, and it comes in a really neat bottle, sort of reminiscent of old-school soda pop.
3.6 Pours deep orange with a thin white cap. Ok, let’s face it: this isn’t my first swing at this brew. I’ve probably had it more often than Rob Ford fumbles a media scrum. Pours is brisk, hoppy & a little like a juicy soda pop. I like drifting into one or three of these at the end of a session, but it does serve pretty well for my 3 part investigation/study (aka excuse to drink more than I should on a Tuesday night). Pretty good in this summer heat but maybe a little too sugary. Bonus mark for having a tiki on the label.
3.3 355ml bottle. Cloudy orange with a frothy white head with some sediments. Flavors are juicy pineapple, pine resin, bread, lemon, alcohol and toasted malts. Light to medium body, moderate carbonation, oily texture.
