Speights Gold Medal Ale

Speights Gold Medal Ale

SPEIGHT’S® Gold Medal Ale is a full strength bitter ale with a hint of “grassy” undertones that add to its complexity. The use of SPEIGHT’S® malts and hops produces the full flavour that has been synonymous with the Pride of the South since 1876.

5.0 Needs to be in Australia
4.1 A great beer. A working class beer cheap as chips but it doesn't dissipoint a very distinct aroma and taste always my go to beer if I'm out hunting or fishing with the boys as every true bloke drinks the stuff at a piss up you can always tell the true blue country boys from the wannabes from what bottle is in there hand so if you ever get the chance get a handle or a box it won't dissipoint
2.8 I grew up drinking this beer, and it always tastes better when drunk as a draught in Otago (brewed in the original brewery) Lion brews it in other breweries as well, and it is not quite the same, though very close. Still if you only have the choice of commercial brews it's not a bad choice.
2.0 On tap in Auckland airport. Pours golden amber, thin off white head. Aroma of pale bread, cracker malt, toast. Flavor is toasted malt, dough, hay, grass. Malty “beer”
2.6 330ml Flasche. Helle Kupferfarbe, flacher Schaum. Malzduft. Bitterer Antrunk. Etwas stumpf.
2.7 Beer with copper aspect, medium bitter, average carbonized, some foam in the top, (bought a 33cl bottle at FreshChoice supermarket, Te Anau, NZ #651)(#9 NZ).
2.4 Not a bad beer considering it is somewhat of a budget offering quenches the thirst and is a safe bet at a sports bar with limited options on tap.
4.5 Like the US, New Zealand has too many quality craft brews to sample in a three week visit. Unlike the US, New Zealand offers a lot of good, low alcohol beers, several of which are not pale ales. Speights was my favorite of these. Speights has been around for over a century, so it is not what most would call a craft brewery. It's Gold Medal Ale is refreshing, with a light malty flavor and little to no hop aroma. I would love to have a bottle of it in front of me now.
5.0 Speights reminds me of that kid who shows off at a party. When a 16 year old kid walks into the piss up, everyone automatically knows hes either a country boy or a wannabe country kid. Leaves a taste in my mouth thats so mouth watering it makes my legs quiver just thinking about it.
2.5 Bottle in Auckland. Backlog rating from bottle collection and historic scoring. No tasting notes kept, just rating.
1.7 330ml bottle Amber pour with OK head. Slight sulfury/ grainy aroma. Mild bitterness - some malt. Otherwise bland. Meh.
2.8 330ml bottle served cold. Not much aroma but more of a malty flavour than that would suggest. Quite thin on the palate which makes for a refreshing gulp. Easy drinking but not complex.
4.4 Easy drinking, would happily polish a 24 box and have room for more. Nice and golden in colour.
2.6 Bottle. Golden in colour. Malty; sweet malts, caramel. Fruity; although couldn’t identify a specific fruit. Hoppy; hint of grassy hops, low bitterness. Sweet fruity malty throughout. Dry in the finish. Relatively bland. (2009)
2.8 Bottle, shared by a friend just back from NZ. Clear caramel colour with a white head. Light, malty, a little biscuity, clean and balanced, not bad. Didn’t mind this actually, exactly what you ’d hope out of a light and accessible bitter.
1.4 Bottle at home from indepdent shop in Dublin. Was quite sad to try this and find it tasted pretty awful. I would never describe it as an ale, was more like a brown lager or something strange....had fond memories of drinking this in New Zealand so worth another shot down under.
3.1 F: huge, creamy, off-white. C: coppery, clear. A: malt, caramel, grassy, bread, floral. T: malt, caramel, grassy, toast, candy, very light bitterness, good balanced and not bad at all, medium body, medium carbonation, 440ml can from local supermarket in Nadi in Fiji.
1.5 The flavor makes me think of a bad malt liquor. Thin and tinny, this y very enjoyablr. Found in Fiji.
1.0 On tap. Orange color, white head. Tasted like Bavarian non alcoholic beer - only malt present in aroma. Bad.
2.0 Hardly the worst beer in existence and easy to see why many beer casuals enjoy it, but if you’re looking for a decent beer, New Zealand has many, many much nicer beers to offer.
1.8 On tap. Aroma is floral, biscuit, malt vinegar. Flavour is quite sweaty, perhaps some caramel and biscuit trying to fight through, but mostly a sweaty start and a malt vinegar finish. Bad.
2.5 1st beer on holiday. 330ml can into glass. Pours copper golden with solid white head. Lightly carbonated. Aroma of wet cardboard and pepper. Mild sweet taste, a touch of vegetables and tin mixed in with the malty finish. Cheap quaffer.
3.0 Thank you Fred for this bottle that we share together at le Petit-Lancy. The body is copper, typical for the ale. The carbonation is a bit low, regular ale for the taste, watery, small touch of bitterness, hop, malt, good pint in a pub to start a night.
2.8 Tap at the bungee bar in Singapore. Golden pour - a darker golden. Grains, low hop, kind of bland.
3.2 [8259-20160513] Tap. Mild leafy grains aroma. Slightly hazy, brown amber body with a medium-lasting foamy off-white head. Grainy toasted leaf flavour. Medium body. Average. (6/3/7/3/13) 3.2- (@ Forsyth Barr Stadium, Dunedin, NZ; watching the exciting and much-anticipated Highlanders vs. Crusaders rugby match)
3.0 2016-05-13. Crisp dark amber body, with a smallish head. Aroma is sweet and malty, toasty notes. Flavour is similarly malty and sweet, caramel with accents of toasty malt and just enough bitterness to keep from becoming cloying. Average bodied palate, good carbonation. 6/3/6/3/12-13 On tap at Forsyth Barr Stadium, Crusaders v Highlanders, Dunedin, NZ. "What kind of beer do you have?" "Speights!" "Uhh, I guess I’ll have two Speights then."
3.5 Pours a coppery gold with a firm lacy head. Unobtrusive malt on the nose, slightly biscuity with a low carbonation from the bottle. Quite sensionable and rates well. Not a bad drop at all
2.2 I wouldn’t say it’s a Bitter. It doesn’t taste like one for sure. It’s rather a bit poor quality golden ale with a touch of caramel, nothing like english Bitters. Poor taste, medium mouth feel. Not really worth to try.
2.4 Gold pour with a thin white head. Malty, grassy aroma. Taste is mostly just the malt, a little watery but easy drinking. Nothing spectacular but tastes alright
