Spencer Trappist Ale

Spencer Trappist Ale

Inspired by traditional refectory ales brewed by monks for the monks’ table, Spencer is a full-bodied, golden-hued Trappist ale with fruit accents, a dry finish and light hop bitterness. St. Joseph’s Abbey in Spencer, Massachusetts, is home to a community of Trappist monks and the first American Trappist brewery. Following the Benedictine tradition of ora et labor (prayer and work), the monks pursue a simple life of contemplative prayer, a manual labor and hospitality. The brewery helps support the monks and their charitable outreach.

4.4 Medium dark hazy golden hue with a thin white head. Subtle banana fruit aroma. Medium body with delicate fruit, spice, malt and hop flavor. Very nicely balanced with dry very mild hop finish. Pleasingly moderate high carbonation. Excellent overall…perhaps my new favorite Trappist single (Belgian or domestic)!
1.7 Bottle of 33cl, in a Trappist glass; from the fridge. Old note. Not a good beer? Not a trappist at all.
3.9 Orange gold with a thin white head. Mild fruity aroma with a banana note up front and some light spice on the finish. Drying. Very nice for an American Trappist ale.
3.4 Purvis Cellars bottle (11-Oct-21) Banana yeast aroma. Deep amber murky colour, ok head and suds lacing. Apricot banana flavour. Banana finish and spiced apricot banana aftertaste.
2.8 Malt caramel biscuit aroma. Amber colour with fair head and lacing. Malt chocolate caramel biscuit herbal flavour. Smooth lingering palate.
3.8 Riquísima. Pan, levadura, maltas ...
4.2 Bright gold pour. Sweet hop and spice flavor. Full flavor, not halfway made. Delicious and satisfying.
3.8 Pear, lemongrass, candi nose. Clear amber, medium head. Hay, stewed pear, fairly dry. Subtle hint of clove. Medium body, moderate carbonation. Very nicely balanced, well executed. Impressive!
3.6 33 cl bottle poured into a Trappist glass. Hazy golden amber colour with a lumpy white head. Fruity aroma with yeasts - pears, banana and a spiced note. A herbal bitterness. Taste is light sweet. Medium bodied. Drying fruity finish. Fine and well balanced American in Belgian style.

3.0 Amerikaans Trappistenbier.
3.4 Bottle at Red River 2.2.21 trailer tasting. Hazy amber color with fleeting ivory foam. Nice light fruit, apples, spicy, yeasty white bread aromas. Smooth slick mouthfeel with soft carbonation. Light fruit flavors with stale bread, spicy yeast — smooth finish ___ tasty
4.1 Belle surprise pour cette trappiste made in USA !
3.7 Gold and cream pour. Delicate floral and spice bouquet. Delicate spice and floral palate, with traditional flavours all there, malt, caramel, spices, hints of sultana and banana, but subtle. Quite a nice homage.
3.4 Hazy pale amber. Thin head with low retention. Aroma intensity 3.5/5. Spicy aroma, notes of pepper, malt and tomato. Medium bitter. Medium body
3.3 33 cl. bottle at home. Low but lasting flufy white head. Hazy darl amber body. Oranges lemon aroma with hints of alcohol. Smooth and pleasant fruity, oranges and lemon, flavor with caramel notes, little hops bitterness and a long sweet finish. The relatively high alcohol contents are nicely disguised by the sweetness of the beer. As a trappist beer it is, however, disappoing.
3.1 A reasonable facsimile of a Belgian abbey ale, but just not quite there. Straw, clove, stone fruit, and vanilla are present, along with a slight yeasty metallic tone and faint notes of wort and vegetation. Bananas, pennies, and mild floral hops come through on the finish. Just a little off, as is everything I've tried from this brewery so far.
3.8 Bottle tasted Hazy dark golden color with medium foamy white head. Pear and apricots to the nose. Fruity ( stonefruits and pears) bready and caramel malts with honey. Jasmine with a mild hoppyvbitterness. Medium body mellow on the palate with a medium carbonation finishes dry. Really sweet and refreshing trappist.
Sympathique
3.6 Draft at Finley's 5-23-15
3.8 Bottle. Pours lightly cloudy rich orange with a large, frothy white head, long retention. Medium-high bready sweet malt, light biscuit and caramel malt notes, light yeast spices and stone fruit esters, soft hop bitterness, and a dry finish. Medium-light body and mouth-filling carbonation.
