3.2 50 cl bottle @ home. Pours clear dark amber with an off-white head. Aroma and flavour are caramel, subtle smoke, malt, and a hint of metal - with a dry finish.
3.9 Nice brown colour with a slightly off white head. Aroma of smoke, caramel. Taste is light smoke, caramel, mushroom. Smooth, medium carbonation. Good stuff.
4.0 On tap at Spezial. Deep orange lasting white head. Caramel, malty, some light sweetness, light bitterness in finish. Smoke is moderate. Smooth. Not too much smoke. Medium bodied.
3.0 Copenhagen 16/9 2020. 50 cl bottle from Mikkeller web-shop. The label is yellow-ish is made out to look like old paperwith the name in gothic letters. Pours unclear dark amber with a small white head. Settles as flimsy, thin remnants of foam unable to cover the surface of the beer. No lacing. Aroma is medium intense with a sweet, malty odor mingling with a prominent scent of smoke with a peaty touch. A bit of fruit. Sweet red apple. Light carbonation. Thin, watery, almost flat texture. Flavor is moderately intense followed by a light saltiness. Aftertaste is moderately bitter. Lingers for a bit. Semi-dry finish. Fine peaty nose but a bit thin.
3.9 Clear brown. Aroma is smoke caramel ham some roasted almond and deep melasses. Taste is sweet caramel with dense umami smoke and caramellized sugar. Also a decent amount of bitterness. Drinkable and rich. Maybe i like smokeds now?!
3.4 Tap@ brauerei Spezial Bamberg. Roodbruin van kleur. Ruikt en smaakt subtiel rokerig, moutig.
4.1 Drank on brewery Spezial in Bamberg, clear red-brown beer with very nice long stable light dark white head, smell and taste is here also smoke, not sweet and not bitter, good balanced beer and the smoke is dominated, not hoppy, avarage carbonation, medium body and texture, perfect,
4.0 Brown with a thin, frothy head. Campfire aroma, toffee, plums. Taste is bittersweet with the sweet malts very nicely offsetting a smokey, roasted bitterness. Medium bodied with enough chewiness to keep things interesting. Good!
4.0 Pours hazelnut brown with white top. Nose is wet wood and light campfire smoke. Taste is oak, bread, earth, smoke and rye. Smooth and easily drinkable.
3.6 Amber-Brown-Red indecipherable body. Small head. Very clean aroma and flavour. Nuts, smoke, caramel, silky smooth, short finish. Very drinkable rauchbier marzen.
3.7 Bottle 0.5l at home, Nivala. Thanks to snowcrash000! Color is clear brown with small white head. Aromas and flavours: Malts, some toffee? smoke, some tar and some sweetness. Easy with nice drinkability. Nice creamy malts!
3.9 At the source. Amber color (yes Caesar, "Helmut Bernstein, de bonkige spits von Würzberg") with an off-white head. Smell and taste malts, nice and smooth rauch, a bit sweet, malty base underneath. Full body, suitable carbonation. Good, very pleasant. 7-5-8-4-15.
3.8 08-07-19 // tap at Brauerei Spezial Clear amber brown. Caramel nutty with a smoky touch. Smooth. A bit lo low carbonated for me. Sweetish. Great.
4.8 [Bamberg 2018] Draft sample @ Brauerei Spezial. Caramel amber, massively creamy thick head. Nose is pure bacon, caramel, tea, gravy. Body is pure oil, tea, caramel, bacon oil. Taste is quite sweet with caramel, tea, huge bacon & tea oil. Amazing, super intense.
4.1 Bottle devoured at home. Dark amber with white head. Dude, I’ve got this, it’s a hollistic thing. It all connects. Sweet malts, soft caramel fudge, pigs grease, bacon, burnt toast, dairy cream butter, cozy fireplaces, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside bbq meat, favourite wooden furniture, resin of the beechwood, actual beechwood, with on top the exact right amount of honey, bonfires, fingers after rolling tobacco cigarettes, thinking you’re not in love while you already are, comfy and doable hungover lazy sundays in spicy smelling pyjamas not a single fuhuck to be given, finding yesterdays pizza leftovers in the fridge, opening a fresh bottle of tobasco sauce, in a house with a lot of plants, and amazing natural lighting, massive wood, very piney, cute baby animals at the petting zoo, feeling confident about the quality of potting soil, Nick Cave in the mid 90’s, the wind in the pussywillow, pumpkin with goatcheese out of the oven, McCauley Culkin’s face in Home Alone, Indiana Jones without the unnecessary sequels, deep sniffing the greasy fur of a generously friendly forest bear’s neck while slowdancing through a late summer meadow, being friends with the blacksmith in Lure of the Temptress, acting like it’s chill while forever stuck in a Jheronimous Bosch painting, shit working out better between Buscemi and Sevigny, ALIBALI and James Baxter being one and the same creature, chilling by the campfire besides a battling dwarf, amazone chick and barbarian, 16-bit 256 color palette pixelart boner in general, smelling the leather satchel with amber colored gems the natives gave ya, Crumb drawing strong chicks’ asses, Riefenstahl as a typographer, casual christmas tree, essence of natural habitat, opening a box of ice skates from the attic, pure essence of attic, fur coat fossilised in amber stone, first chestnuts of the season, in a fantasy world on the back of a giant and ancient seaturtle, with a lot of seapocks. Moderate sweet and bitter, umami the right way. Over medium body and soft carbonation. Greasy and good.
3.8 Pours a clear, deep dark amber, almost mahagony coloration with a medium, frothy head. Smells of bready, caramel malt with a mild smoky note. Taste follows the nose, being dominated by sweet, bready, caramel and slightly grainy malt with a pretty mild smokiness and light herbal note. Finishes with a light bitterness, some sweetness and some grains and very little smoke lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a light/medium body and medium carbonation. Found this slightly disappointing compared to Schlenkerla Märzen. Much milder smokiness, slighty lighter body and less balanced, lacking some hop bitterness to balance out the sweetness. Whereas Schlenkerla tastes of campfire smoked bacon, this is more reminiscent of honey barbecue. This also has a notably lighter body and mouthfeel to it, which, combined with the lighter smokiness, makes it a bit more easy-drinking by comparison.
4.2 Fantastic Rauchbier with dark brown, transparent body, aroma of Wood, smoke, and hints of red berries (seems odd, but great). Taste is more Classic märzen, followed by a smoky aftertaste with lite bitterness. Great stuff
4.0 Bottle from SinH4, many thanks Stefan! Dark chestnut brown, with slightly off white head. Smoked wood, some charcuteries, hay. Smooth, rounded with a nutty character. Lovely!
4.0 Vom fass @ Sternla. Egyik kedvenc bambergóc főzdémmé nőtte ki magát a speciál.
3.9 Bottle care on TimE. Dark chestnut brown, clarity, white head. Nose is smoky beechwood, smoked ham, fruity, toasted grains. Taste is fruity, smoked beechwood, smoked ham, dry yeast.
4.0 Smoked bacon, malty, dry, a touch of chocolate and smoked cheese. Smooth and rounded. Doesn’t deliver the level of complexity as Schlenkerla from the cask but world class nonetheless
3.5 500 ml bottle. Clear brown reddish, very small head. Malt, caramel, smoke, some bacon and dried ham, breadcrumbs, brown sugar, dry citrus notes. Light sweetness, some bitterness. Light bodied, watery texture, light dry and smoky finish, soft carbonated. Similar to their Lager, but maltier. Good overall.
3.9 500 ml bottle shared at JL, thanks! Reddish brown with off white head. Bready malt, lots of smoke, oak, smooth and balanced despite the big smoke notes.
3.2 Cola brown. Aroma is smoked ham. Taste is mostly malt with some notes of charcoal-grilled meat. Sweet aftertaste.
4.0 herbs, floral, earthy, bread, roasty, pale, amber, red, brown, minimal head, white foam, frothy, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium sourness, soft carbonation, average carbonation, medium body,
3.8 Bottled on November 13, 2017. As a blind tasting. Clear reddish brown color, off-white head. Malty, slight smoked, mellow scent. Malty, very lightly smoked taste. It is not over the top in your face kind of smoked beer, it has a delicate and nice balance to it. One of the best smoked beers out there, albeit far from the smokiest one. Great stuff. Medium mouthfeel, medium to medium low bitterness. 8/4/8/3/15=3.8
4.0 Bottle. Clear dark brown. Smoky sausage, some bread and a little black pepper aroma. Slightly bitter, very smoky, some hickory. Full body, soft fizz, mild smoly finish.
4.4 500 mL draft serving at the restaurant. This was one of the most exciting beers for me to drink fresh. I've only had Spezial a couple times before and it was old and somehow light-struck, which is beyond me. Having it how it's supposed to be is absolutely amazing. It's still a crystalline amber with a frothy head. But the aroma is delightful with hearty, meaty smoke and a biscuity, caramelly malt backbone. Palate is medium full. Great smoke flavor throughout with a satisfying malt balance. Hops are barely there, but add appropriate bitterness. It was seemingly less smoky than Schlenkerla, but still had more true smoked aroma and flavor than many non-German breweries are willing to employ. Fantastic.
