Sprecher Dopple Bock

Sprecher Dopple Bock

This strong, dark lager was originally brewed as a liquid bread to sustain Bavarian monks while fasting. Its complex malt character comes from brewing with many varieties of dark roasted caramel malt and long periods of cold storage.

3.5 Bottle at Dells location. Really a tasty and easy drinking dopplebock. Tons of sweeter caramel and molasses notes but not cloying. Well made.
4.2 bottle. clear brown with ruby highlights and almost no head. malty, plummy aroma. medium bodied, moderate to low carbonation, chewy, smooth, sticky palate. dark fruit (raisin, prune) flavors with toast and caramel. later notes of chocolate. a sessionable dopplebock to me.
3.5 Bottle. Reddish brown pour, fairly clear for the deep color. Smaller white head. Bold malt in this - slightly sweet caramel. A little roasty as well. This is a well made beer.
3.8 Strong, malty aroma has a robust overtone of caramel with just a hint of cloves. Pours a somewhat translucent sepia with an average light tan head. Hearty flavor has malty, caramel, clove, nutty and earthy notes. Smooth, firm texture has a decent fizz and leaves a malty, slightly sweet finish. Not ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ad at all.
4.1 This Dopple Bock pours a deep copper/amber and has a thin tan head which dissipates fairly quickly. The aroma is sweet with dark fruit and a bit of alcohol (not bad). Dark fruit continues into the flavor profile and is complimented nicely by a nutty sweetness. The beer finishes sweet and fast with dryness lingering on the back of the tongue. There is a slight alcohol warmth which goes great on a cold evening. If I ice-fished, this might be the beer I take along. Price was great @ $6.49/4
3.9 12 oz. Bottle. A powerfully potent Bock! Malt, molasses scent with caramel and grain. Dark brown pour, not much head, and I poured vigorously - a low point. Light/med body with a fizzy feel and a slightly crisp finish. Molasses fronted taste with a carmal malt middle and a brown-like finish, lots of dark roasty flavor.
3.0 (Bottle) Pours clear dark mahogany copper reddish brown with a pale brown/nougat coloured head. The aroma is very vinous with notes of dark fruits, cherries, raspberries and grapes alongside malty tones of fat and buttery caramel/toffee as well as dark bread. Whispers of hops, milk and chocolate. The flavour is light to medium sweet, light bitter and medium acidic with notes of vinegar and citrus up front. Undertones of caramel, toffee and bread alongside a hint of hops. The mouthfeel round, tart and unclean with a soft carbonation. Toffee, citrus, milk and vinegar. Medium bodied. A bad bottle from a fantastic brewery.
3.5 Bomber courtesy of Marsiblursi. Pours clear deep ruby reddish brown with a frothy goldenish brown head that slowly dissipates while leaving some thick lacing on the glass. Smell is sweet, sour, vinous and malty with dark grapes, wood, toffee, lemon zeat, vanilla fudge, dusty cocoa powder, dark bread, resin, hay and caramel. Taste is tiny sweet and sour with dark bread, grapes, lemon juice, wood, red wine vinegar, orange zest, lemon hard candy, leather, grass, dark plums, cherries, biscuits and hints of port wine. Mouthfeel is slightly dry, tiny tart and medium to full bodied. Finish is slightly sour and tiny tart with grapes, plums, cherries, wood, dark bread and hints of red wine vinegar. Good and very vinous but not sure it’s supposed to be this sour.
3.5 Pours a clear garnet and cola color with a decent tan head that stays, for the most part. Aroma is roasted malt and licorice. Taste is a rich blend of sweet roasted malt, pumpernickel bread, caramel and licorice. some minor alcohol warmth is also present. A top-notch doppel bock.
3.8 On tap at Sprecher Restaurant in Middleton, pours a clear dark brown with an off white head, aroma has a good amount of chocolate and roasted malts, the flavor is very roasty on the front end with the chocolate notes coming through in the finish, some bread is in there as well, another decent choice here in Middleton.
3.7 12 ounce bottle from Sam’s Quik Stop. Pours a clear dark brown color with a medium sized creamy brown head. Good head retention. Aroma of big raisin notes with spice, caramel and toffee. The taste is bready malts, toffee, anise, spice, herbal hops, nutty notes. . Full bodied, creamy texture, low bitterness, moderate carbonation. Nice beer.
3.5 Bottle poured into a footed Celebrator glass - Murky mahogany pour with a foamy light tan head. Toffee and hints of bourbon on the nose, thick, lightly toasted malt, and a faintly fruity yeast. Taste lands on the sweet side, with a touch of booziness that transitions into thick waves of booze-soaked dark bread, rich toasty malt, and sweet caramel. A touch of milkiness and metal. Full bodied with rich carbonation that is a bit too aggressive. Pretty nice dopplebock, but perhaps a touch too sweet for my tastes.
3.4 Originally reviewed: 4/23/10. Poured into a pilsner glass. Pours a cloudy mahogany with a thick luscious tan head capping it off. Great retention; left some sticky lace globs on the glass edge. Scents of raisins, prunes, tart grapes, and alcohol. Different. The body is creamy and smooth. Thicker than many of the Dopple’s I’ve had. I like that. Flavor profile starts out mimicking the scent with some tart fruitiness, raisins, and a light alcohol burn on the backend. But the finish is very full and bready. Some mild toasted bread crust and crackers. I like that finish! Decent beer. Probably my favorite of the style so far, and I will admit, this is not one of my favorite styles in general. Recommend.
4.2 Clear dark brown, thin head. Moderate malt aroma, bready. Oh my, assertive, complex malt flavor, chocolate hint. Medium body, light hop bitterness. Nicely done.
3.4 Tap at Max’s. Pours clear dark brown with a small, fizzy light tan head, short retention with light lacing. Aroma is cookie and caramel malt, nutty, earthy hops and dark fruity esters. Flavor is malt dominant with fruity esters, light hops and bitterness with a sweet finish. Full body, medium warmth and carbonation.
3.6 Pours dark brown with thin, light beige head; short retention and minimal lacing. Aroma is toasted and caramel malts, dark fruit, light earthy hops, and brown sugar. Flavor is malt dominate with faint hops and some fruit esters; sweet, malty finish. Medium body, carbonation, and warmth.
2.9 Dark brown, muddy. Smells sweet, stone fruit like crazy. Taste is sort of watery, with caramel and dates.
4.2 A good dark, malty beer. Not much head, pours a dark chocolate brown. Caramely, not as big of flavor as I expected, but extremely delicious. Will buy this again. Bottle/Snifter.
3.2 Bottle courtesy of BeerFMAndy. Served in a tulip. Pours a very dark brown color with a single-finger off-white head that fades quickly into a fairly-thick collar. The nose has a bit of caramel and dark fruits along with some bread and a fair amount of sweetness. The flavor is pretty sweet without much else accompanying that aspect. There’s some dark caramel and brown sugar plus a bit of fruit. Medium body with a slight alcohol burn in the finish. Decent example of the style. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 06-05-2011
3.8 Brown with red hues. Dark fruit, caramel malts, and a hint of roast. Decent malt presence. Flavor leans toward the darker, more roast side - but not overly. Good palate presence, but flavor feels a bit thin. Finishes somewhat dry. A good example of the darker spectrum of doppelbock.
3.8 Has a dark fruit malt base to it. Does not have the usual malt fire that other doppelbocks have but overall its a good, if subdued doppelbock that grows on you after a while.
3.3 Poured a clear dark brown color with a thin off-white head. The fruity aroma had notes of dark fruits and caramel. Somewhat sweet. The flavor was sweet, fruity, and malty with a medium body.
3.1 As I always note, Sprecher has a great bottle, but #@(! that stupid twist-off. Good label, medium cola brown beer, beady light tan head. Cereal, dark fruit, syrupy aroma. Twangy, raisiny, metallic - what I would think of as a typical bock flavor profile. Medium body, bitter and bitter cocoa aftertaste. A decent representation of something that ain’t my favorite style. New Leaf Market.
3.2 Bottle from the brewery. Pours a cola color with a reddish tint, slightly foamy. Aroma is sweet caramel, sour fruit and vanilla. Taste is lemon, raisins, caramel and a faint whisky-ness. A bit thin and dry. Somewhat sour finish. I swear it has had bread dough thickness in the past, but I am not getting that depth here.
3.8 Bottle courtesy blutt59. Clear reddish color with a dark brown touch. Bubbly white ring of head. Aroma is heavy spice, caramel malt and dark chocolate. Flavor is sweet chocolate, tingly caramel and a touch of alcohol. Very tasty and well done.
4.0 Bottle, purchased a little over 2 years ago at Pizza Port Carlsbad bottle shop. Nose is slightly (pleasantly oxidized) with tinges of smoke, dark fruits and caramel. Flavor is deep, rich and malty with a perfect sweetness level and balancing bitterness - notes of caramel, plum, raisins, licorice, wood, earthy hops and bread. A multi-layered flavor sensation. NIce mouthfeel, plenty of creamy heft with moderlate carbonation yet very drinkable. One of the best dopplebocks that I have ever had. Great stuff.
3.1 Poured a dark reddish brown with a thin head that faded quickly. Aroma was of sweet malt and the taste was similar with a roasted-coffee hue and light to moderate hop finish. Palate was very good. Overall, a decent dopple bock.
3.6 Bottle. Pours dark mahogany with a medium tan head and some nice lacing. Aroma of sweet caramel malt, lots of toffee, some chocolate. Flavor is of sweet caramel, some nuts and licorice, even more toffee and chocolate, and there’s a soy sauce flavor that creeps in as well, particularly as it warms. Can smell and taste the alcohol. Very good doppelbock, but not my favorite.
3.7 Pours a rich brown with a medium tan head. Aroma is malty with some caramel and sweet fruits. Flavor is also quite sweet with fruit, sugar, syrup, molasses, nuts, malt, caramel, and some noticeable alcohol presence. Very smooth, medium bodied, and medium to low carbonation. Very well done.
4.0 Awesome American version of the German classic. Dark dark orange-brown, swirling head, with a vague low-lying lacing. Candy apple, dried apricot and plums in the nose. Syrupy thick sugary palate, but with a bit of a warm feel. Plenty of depth and balance in the palate. Really nice and enjoyable. I’ll need to pick up a couple more of these!
