3.6 16 oz twist off bottle. It pours a deep, dark brown/black. The head is tall and foamy and light tan. It recedes moderately quickly with some decent lacing. The smell is pure cocoa. It has that powdered cocoa scent with a hint of plastic and soap which is odd. There is a little bit of raspberry. The flavor is a classic american porter with a subtle tangy raspberry flavor. It is pretty good, and an upgrade form the smell. It is smooth and velvety. A nice effort. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 12-22-2010 04:46:53
4.4 I did not enjoy this brew at first, it has a raspberry flavor added to it, and that was not expected, or appreciated. I drank a few more glasses since that initial taste, and I have quickly grown to enjoy it. My new favorite beer from Sprecher, but only until the Irish Stout is released I presume.
3.6 Sampled at the SLC Holiday Tasting. Near black pour with a ring of head. Aroma of roasted malt, ripe fruit and chocolate. Flavor is the same, but less. Still, a pretty nice brew.
3.1 This kind of caught me by surprise since I did not read the dark fine print. I was expecting a regular Porter, but this seemed kind of sour at 1st until I read it was flavored with Raspberries. Aroma of chocolate and light berries. Hazy dark brown with a medium glass-lacing tan head. Flavor has lots of tart raspberries and chocolate. Kind of a chocolate/raspberry fruit/herb (cocoa) beer!
3.9 Brown pour with tan head and lace. Chocolate and light sour raspberry. Chocolate raspberry, sour malt with no bitter.Thin watery but very nice drink.
3.6 Purchased at Breeze-Thru in Milwaukee, WI; consumed on a Monday night after a terrible Bears NFC Championship loss. This is OK, kinda weird with the raspberries. Appearance is a very very dark brown with a thin off white head. Aroma of chocolate, toffee, cocoa, and a hint of raspberries. Taste of raspberries and chocolate, somewhat smooth, definitely decadent. It’s good but wouldn’t go out of my way to enjoy again.
3.9 Shared at the Nashville Beer Summit. I’m surprised at how my scores are so at odds with the Ratebeer scores. Sweet smoky malt, sweet and sour, quite weird. It’s hard to wrap my tongue around, but it’s a nice interesting marriage between roasted malt and sour ale.
3.3 Shared at Nashville Beer Summit 1.0. Pours brown black with a light brown head. Aroma of dark malts and berry. Lighter side of medium bodied, with average carbonation. Flavor of dark roasted malts, berry, and smoke. Green apple notes on the finish. Somewhat odd, and sort of misses the delicate balance between dark roast and fruit.
3.5 16 oz. bottle from grownfool- thanks again, Brian! Pours a deep, dark, basically opaque brown color with a finger-thick tan head that settles into an uneven film. Says ’1985-2005’ with a big 20 in between on the label- is this really from 2005? I guess I believe it, as the nose is a little oxidized, along with notes of roasted malts, smoke, raspberries, chocolate, light coffee, and toast. Flavor of raspberries, roasted malts, smoke, pepper, mustard, and barbecued meats. Really odd, mixed up flavor. It sure is pretty interesting, though. Light-medium bodied, with medium carbonation and a dry, roasty, muddled mouthfeel. Interesting porter.
3.6 Deep mahogany - almost, but not quite black. Smells like a raspberry truffle with a cup of coffee sitting next to it. Flavor is chocolate covered raspberry, again, with a coffee in the background. A bit of tartness, as well. Pretty good stuff overall.
3.1 The appearance on this is a black color with a beige head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, and licorice. The flavor has some odd annoying sour citrus tone to it along with more chocolate and coffee. The finish is bitter and sour as well. Overall this beer would be ok minus the sourness from the raspberries, but with it not good!
3.5 Deep black opaque pour that produces a quickly falling tan head. Rich roast malt aroma. Slight roast malt bitterness in the flavor that’s accompanied by a slight sourness that detracts a bit.
3.7 Dark pour. Big fluffy tan head. Aroma of lactose, raspberry jam and chocolate. Flavor is much the same. Nice lactose flavor some light roast.
3.5 Dark brown color with a thin tan rim. Decent lacing with a strong raspberry aroma with hints of chocolate. Raspberry-chocolate flavor with a touch of caramel. Quite sweet and fruity. Better than expected.
3.2 Sample at the brewery. Pours a dark brown with little head. Aroma was a weak chocolate and another odor that I could not identify - a slight fruitiness, but not in a pleasant way. Taste was a weak raspberry chocolate, some roasted malt. Not unpleasant to drink despite the confusing aroma, although thinner than I would like from a porter.
3.3 On tap @ Sprecher. Nice dark appearence with a decent head that faded to a thick lace. Aroma of malts with some very light sweetness and roasted character. Taste of mainly of barley malt with hints of chocolate and very light fruit. Mouthfeel was nice. Overall, a decent brew that will be worth re-visiting at a later date.
4.0 Pours an opaque black with a very large creamy tan head. Nose is mostly raspberry. Very creamy on the palate. Taste is defintely of a dessert beer - raspberry, chocolate and malt. Mild and slighty sweet on the finish. A standalone beverage or try serving it with raspberries or other fruit.
3.6 In the bottle from Beertopia. Pours black with red hues and a thin ecru colored head. This has a huge raspberry aroma. Smells like a raspberry cheesecake in a glass. Chocolate flavor. Thin in body, but it works quite well for this beer. Raspberry up front followed by chocolate flavors. Even without the raspberry, this would be a good porter.
3.7 Cola color. I snagged the last tablespoon at the SOB January tasting. Aroma seems like milk chocolate, hazelnut and raspberry cream. Very tasty beer, I think it should be the over-21 Easter basket treat of choice. Tastes like chocolate and raspberry creme. Yum!!
2.8 Bottled at Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Black color. Strong raspberry aroma, sweet and dessert wine like. The flavors of chocolate and raspberry. Tastes very much like raspberry juice and too little porter.
3.3 Bottle. Pours a black body with a tan head. Abundant raspberry notes escape while pouring the bottle. Chocolate covered raspberries, it has a decadent aroma. Creamy raspberry start with some minerals chocolate and a metallic y note, not a roasted malt but metallic, dam i thought this was gonna blow my mind based on the aroma. Finishes quick but im just left with some copper tones in my mouth dam.
3.0 Cold 34.92oz Swing-Top Bottle: Pours an opaque dark chocolate color, with a small medium tan colored frothy head that quickly dissolves. Aroma is of raspberry and rich, dark malts, with some sour notes. Taste is of rich, dark malts and tangy hops, with a burst of raspberry. Ending is of cocoa and sour notes into raspberry tartness. Smooth and full bodied, with light carbonation.
2.9 Dark brown with good, creamy tan head / Sweet, candied berry and roast barley nose / Medium body, watery, with fair finish / Flavors of fresh raspberries and bittersweet chocolate / Weak body gives this one a soda pop character.
3.6 Bottle from Beer Geek. Pours opaque brown/black. Half-finger tan head that left quickly. Aroma of ancient raspberries. Medium body with frothy carbonation. Flavor is very raspberry, accompanied by chocolate. As time goes by, it actually tastes much like a raspberry chocolate truffle - though bitter, not sweet. Finishes in a good way that I can’t begin to describe. Sort of vinous, a bit sour. Ok. I can begin. Wow, if this is 4 years old. Or if it isn’t! Buy one before they go away.
3.7 Bottled at Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm. Black, small beige head. Lightly roasty. Thecocoa and raspberry shows up early. Medium bodied withclean, rounded mouthfeel. Juicy raspberry meets coffee. Dry, slightly citric notes of berries. Fairly low bitterness. A well balanced yet unusual beer staying wel outside of the mainstream (no bourbon barel in sight here!). After the initial confusion I start to really like this!
3.4 16 oz. bottle picked up in single cooler at discount liquors in milwaukee, Pours dark brown almost on the verge of black and red around the edges with thick tall tann head lots of lacing that drys to walls of glass at first aroma all you get is raspberries followed by chocolates taste is like a piece of raspberries chocolate truffel candy overall not a bad porter
3.4 Bottle at Monks Café, Wallingatan. Black coloured with a samll beige head. Fruity aroma of raspberries with roasted notes and notes of chocolate. Roasted flavour of raspberries, chocolate and cocoa powder. Roasted and berryish finish. The raspberries are too dominating.
3.0 Pours deep brown. Aroma of wine. Very light on flavor with an initial hint of raspberry followed by burnt chocolate. Bitterness, but not from hops. Sour aftertaste.
2.9 Dark brown with ruby highlights with a large three finger tan head slowly fading away leaving some splotchy lace. Aroma of a raspberry fruit filled donut, chocolate and malt. If only it tasted like it’s smelled. Mild raspberry at first with some light chocolate and malt and finished up with some raspberry sweet/tartness. Creamy yet thin, oily, dry and astringent with a touch of bitterness. Typical Sprecher, I guess – the king champion of mediocrity.
3.0 Sampled at MuckFest 09! Poured a dark brown with chocolate and berry nose.Flavor was unusal. It first came in chocolately then ended with some tartness.
