Sprecher India Pale Ale

Sprecher India Pale Ale

This traditional ale was originally brewed in England for the British troops stationed in India. Double dry-hopped,it has intense hop flavors and aromas delicately balanced with a potent, yet delicious, malty sweetness.

Randy's Notes: "Our IPA is of the imperial or double style, therefore much stronger than the normal IPA's now found everywhere. It has a very balanced but different flavor than most US micro types focusing on more on malt and hop balance where CA IPA's emphasize massive hop aroma and bitterness."

Editor's Note: also known as IPA2 Double IPA.

2.1 Bottle @ home, picked up at Supermarket Liquor Fort Collins and shared with LeninCat. Pours a milky orange appearance with an off white head. Bubblegum, grapefruit, sweet citrus fruit aroma with a bit of booze. Bitter and boozy. Kind of chunky, chewy toasted malty flavor with bubblegum and some tropical fruit notes. This bottle is pretty old but the beer doesn’t show much promise.
2.9 Sprecher’s double IPA is big and bold, but it’s also a bit brash and unrefined. The hoppiness is a bit too abrasive to be truly enjoyable. It’s too bad, too. Sprecher has a record of creating excellent beers. This just isn’t quite up to that standard.
1.4 Bottle. A- Earthy, floral, spices, spruce. A- Copper color, cloudy liquid, white head. T- Very bitter, malty, earthy, leaves, floral. P- Full body, sharp texture, average carbonation, long bitter finish. O- Very abrasive bitter taste. Not as balanced as I thought it would be.
2.5 Cloudy, orange-amber with a short, thick, off-white head. Bread and pine aroma. Caramel, earthy bitter...old teal leaves and wood. Just hop bitter...no spark. Blaah.
2.9 From a bottle labeled IPA2. Hazy dark copper with a thin foamy white head. Aroma smells like earthy stale hop and a touch of light caramel. The hoppiness kinda reminds me of fart. Thankfully the flavor is more pleasant. Taste starts hoppy bitter with some pine and leafy earthy notes, blending into a dry and blunt earthy pale malt tone with just a kiss of dusty caramel. Full body but not very robust or complex. Not a big fan.
3.2 Bottle. Dark amber color, cloudy, white head. Very malty and full body. Lots of bitterness with a long finish. Overall pretty good.
2.8 Hazy red orange pour. Sweet caramel dominates the taste and aroma. Some earthy hops and tea come through in the the taste. Medium body. This is a new beer to my local store so if I’m reading the date code correctly this is probably past its prime and shouldn’t have been sent out.
4.0 Bottle - good size thick head, hazy dark orange color, piney and earthy hop aroma and flavor, but also very balanced with sweet malt - much more balanced than a typical double IPA, and still very good though
3.6 Had this on draft at the sprecher brewpub in lake Geneva, IL. Reddish orange pour. Tons of sticky head. hoppy and earthy taste and smell. Some malts. Not a bad IPA
3.0 Glowing orange amber. Medium, creamy off-white head, lasting with lace. Citrus hops balanced by quite a bit of caramel, maybe more than hops. Lighter medium body with a long bitter finish. Fairly creamy. Bitterness may be a little green, but the palate adjusts somewhat. Decent but I’d pick any of their traditional styles over this..
3.1 12 oz bottle pours a dark amber color with a nice white head. Aromas of citrus, sweet malt. Medium bodied, more about the balance between malt and hops. Not your typicall DIPA
3.0 12oz bottle with a twist-off cap, from Jungle Jim’s. Labeled "IPA2 Double India Pale Ale". ABV is 7.72% alcohol. Code on bottle is "00194 120301052". Served in my DFH IPA glass. Mostly hazy amber color. Lots of particles swirling about in the body. Thin off-white head. Leaves pretty respectable lace. Medium to bigger body. Smooth, kind of soft carbonation. Lightly dry in the finish. Lightly spicy hop, some orange creme. More malt forward flavor, big caramel malts. Sweeter, malty taste. Less bitter in the finish. As far as malt-forward IPAs go, this is alright... I just prefer my IPAs to be hop-forward. Not too easy to down, either
3.2 Pour is hazy orange, almost amber with a thin white head. Nose is sweet fruit and citrus with a slight hop floral/pine. Taste is actually maltier than expected. There is some decent hop notes sweet pine as well as some biscuit or bread yeast. Mouthfeel is medium. Not as oily as some double/imperial ipa's but good.
3.6 Very malt forward aroma and palate. Pretty run of the mill DIPA, good but, unremarkable
3.0 Bottle. Pours an orangey copper with an off-white head. Aroma has simple sugars with a heavy malt bill. Taste is of sweet caramel malts and a lot of sugar, with faint fruits. Not too IPAish, but then again ... not sure what else it would be.
3.2 bottle. ipa2. 7.72%. hazy gold with yeast chunks under a medium, creamy white head. earthy, sprucy aroma. minty, sprucy hop flavors, but also some floral german varieties. a big, thick, malt backing with some crystal malt i think. full bodied with light carbonation. don’t expect a zesty, refreshing ipa.
3.1 Bottle. Pours hazy orange amber with a ton of floaties and a medium white head that slowly dissipates with nice lacing. Aroma is caramel and biscuit, plus a bit of pine. Flavor is about the same, medium sweet and light bitter strengthening to medium in the far finish. Pretty damn unexciting, but actually not bad if you don’t think of it as an IPA.
3.5 The beer looked clear in the mug, with light copper colored body, and a head that was a little thicker than the width of one finger. The smell was very mild for the style with a herbal-spicy hop smell followed by carbonation smell. The initial taste was quite spicy and resinous with notes of chill pepper, ginger, and cinnamon, but it also suffered from a metallic tinge. This was followed by a honey like sweetness, and the finish was a little floral. The mouthfeel was harsher than I like, and the alcohol was weirdly hot for a beer that was under 8% ABV. Overall misses the mark for me.
3.2 Pours a cloudy, dark copper color with a bubbly head of foam that last for a while leaving a thin layer of foam for the first sip. Scent is strong with malts and bitter hops. The taste is unusual for a double IPA. There is a hoppy taste to it but not in a good way. The dryness just kind of lingers around and is rather bland. There’s slight hints of bitter lemon, burnt malts, and wheat. Certainly drinkable but not one of Sprecher’s better beers.
3.8 12oz bottle - pours dark orange with offwhite head and great lacing. Nose is grapefruit, caramel, and more citrus hops. Flavor adds... Power just went out; glad I just rated the appearance because these two measly candles don’t cut it... Flavor adds an overwhelming amount of hops. I expected more malts based on the smell, but the balance is not quite there. Medium body with a long bitter finish. Resin aftertaste. 7/4/8/4/15 3.8.
2.9 Tasted on tap at Sprecher’s Restaurant & Pub. It was listed as IPA2 which it is also known as. Was able to feel the hops on my tongue, but it left me wanting. Not much nose at all (and I can tell!)
3.0 Thanks to Sean. Resiny-pine hops. Spicy finish. Full maltiness. Serving: Bottle
3.0 Somewhat clear but chunky yeast medium orange color. strong planty/grassy with strong sweet carmel. You can just tell its going to be malty sweet and grassy. Very potent not really in a great way exactly, just really grassy and one dimentional. Taste is planty/grassy hops and very bockish malty with sweetcarmel not quite cloying because of the grassy. Strong grassy (grapefruit/piney?) bitter. Thats about it. Its malty strong bitter but lacks good flavor-taste.
2.9 What? It’s a little deceptive that Sprecher’s double IPA is the same as their regular IPA. I guess it’s not actually a regular ipa. Just pick a label and run with it. I got it when it was labeled as a dipa, and even with my expectations of an emboldened flavor, I still thought it was unusually piney. The aroma was grassy hops, the appearance was yellow, the mouthfeel was medium bodied with carbonation, and the flavor was hopped pine and cellulose.
3.8 I had this poured from a bottle under the Sprecher IPA2 label, Imperial style. Very floral and sparkly on the nose, obviously hop forward with a tight effervescent white head. I’m not particularly attracted to IPA’s but the Imperial styles bring a boozier quality to offset the intense hops that I enjoy. Essentially, a big hoppy, quality IPA with a richer mouthfeel. Quite good.
1.1 What is this? Just awful. No balance, barely any discernable taste. Just poorly done all around. I don’t know what else to say. Drain pour.
1.8 Soapy hops overpower anything else that might be in this beer. Even for a double IPA this tastes like some kind of stunt.
1.0 I like hops, but this is on a whole new level. The hoppiness just overwhelms any taste.
3.3 12oz bottle that say IPA squared. Interesting brew, well balanced… brown pour, 1in off brown head, not as hoppy aroma as I thought it would be. The flavor wasn’t overly hoppy as I was hoping for either. It definitely has that “imperial” flavor to it, long bitter and alcohol finish. I didn’t get that massive” hop flavor. Overall, decent brew,…thanks to “cheap” for this one. I owe you buddy!
3.2 Bottle at chicago best...labeled as sprecher double ipa... Not much of a double but still good ber.. Would do again
