2.9 While a beautiful looking beer, Sprecher’s Winter Brew is a disappoint that lacks complexity. This beer tastes of roasted malts with a sweet after-tone that has a borderline disgusting lager tinge too it. I’ll stick to the Black Bavarian.
3.4 DRAFT at Jerrys in Germantown WI...pours Brownish amber with minimal head...but that could beer the beer tender and not the beer. Sweet carmel nose and taste...nice body and earthy bock taste...almost makes winter worthwhile...tasty
3.7 bottle. nice ruby red to dark brown color, clear. malt-driven, nutty aroma. malt-driven flavor, bready and caramel. medium to full body. clean finish.
3.5 Pours a clear but deep amber with thin eggshell covered head. Aroma is malty with some spicy tones too. Nicely balanced. Flavor is just sweet, not much more complexity than that.
3.6 Local Belmont bottle. This was tasty and thankfully less than 6ABV because it was easy to drink it in copious amounts. Tasty, malty and sweet. Cool winter beer that did not focus on spices.
3.8 Not much aroma, but could be me. Wonderful malt flavor, heavy body. Pretty good ale.
3.2 Bottle from Riley’s in Madison. Pours a mildly thick broth. It did have some bulk to the mouthfeel, a tad sour rather than bitter, though hops shine at end of each sip. Initially tasty and then drinkability elapsed as I found it far from complex. Carbonation a tad aggressive.
3.7 Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Summit Pint glass. Appearance: Chocolate brew with thin off-white head - no lacing. Aroma: Malty aroma of doughy bread, toast and cherry countered by a light noble hop touch. Taste: Very full-flavored lager with elements of bread, chocolate and cherry. The noble hops make their presence known and provide a nice spicy kick that lasts long after each sip. However, after a while, the spiciness begins to detract slightly with too much pepper. Palate: Moderate carbonation, medium to full body for a lager, clean dry finish. Overall: Very nice bock overall, despite the hops becoming slightly distracting. Drinking it while eating (I had cheese) seems to improve the malts slightly and lower the spiciness somewhat.
3.3 @Tampa Wkly Gathering @TampaPourhouse 12oz bottle Thanks Oddefellow/Jason-pours a thin light tan hean and dark red color. Aroma is dark malt, dark fruit. Taste is dark malt-roasty, dark fruit, secondary earthy hops.
3.6 This lager has a full body with a long finish. It has a dark brown colow with a minimal head.
3.1 Pours a clean ruby brown with 1-2 fingers of creamy sandstone head. Nose is toasted and grainy with some wet paper and some malt. Flavor is pretty much the same, sweet toasted grain and an herbal hop character. Medium bodied with a good carbonation.
3.9 12 oz. Clear, deep chestnut color, with a large spongy head. Pleasant malty, toasted nut, prune and molasses aromas. Taste is not-too-sweet chocolate and molasses, with a little tart apple, fig and some grassy-dusty spiciness. Medium body is smoothly carbonated, tingly and well-balanced.
3.6 Source: 16 oz bottle from local retailer. Aroma: The overall odor isn’t particularly strong. When you get a bit closer you can smell a bit of sweetness and roasted malts. Appearance: Deep reddish brown color, unclouded, and topped off with a finger’s width of moderately dense tan head. Taste: Roasted malts and a bit of caramel are apparent when it first hits your mouth, but not overly powerful. The flavor is rounded out with a very mild spice and bit of fruity sweetness which seem to come through more prominently in the aftertaste. Palate: Smooth on the palate with relatively thin body to it. Overall: Rather pleasant to drink. I was expecting, given the name, something a bit spicier or sweeter. Turned out to be a fairly solid Dunkler Bock.
2.3 a little on the fizzy side. barnyard and roasted malt aroma, caramel. light sweetness. disappointing.
3.1 On tap, pours slightly hazy reddish brown, off white head. Aroma has notes of caramel, some spice, and biscuity bread. Taste is slightly spice, sweet caramel and some dark fruit, sweet finish. Not bad!
3.3 Bottle pours a dark brown body that has ruby highlights. Tall beige head falls into attractive sheet lacing. Lame aroma, just hints of toffee and spicy hops. Taste has lots of toasty and roasty malts with a balancing eathy hop bitterness. A hint of dark roast bitterness in the finish. Another good lager styling by Sprecher.
3.2 Tallahassee, Fl - New Leaf Market - 16 oz bottle. Dark cola pour, slight off-white head clings to the side of the glass. Faint aroma with some molasses notes, a touch of prunes. Flavor is solid, but not overpowering. Pick up some caramel traces, a brief mention of unsweetened chocolate, some date-like fruitiness. Mouthfeel is thick enough, Decent.
3.5 I took this pint a little on the cold side, I would think that it might score slightly better if it were a bit warmer. Biscuit-crust aroma, doesn’t really smell like a dark brew. Good embossed Sprecher potato-masher bottle, except that it’s a twistoff. The pour looks all in the world like a root beer. Lightly roasty, mostly dry, toasted bitterness, not very fruity but there are some esters and light floral notes. Body was a little on the light side. A slightly tangy roast finish. Overall, very drinkable and a good choice with a heavy roast beef dinner. This would probably make an excellent gravy, marinade or glaze. New Leaf Market.
3.5 Nice beer. I was pleasantly surprised with this brew. Really good for the price. Not exactly "Samuel Smith" quality, but good nonetheless.
3.3 Dark red, thin beige head. Smells like coffee with a little bit of cinnamon, which is better than it sounds. Nice mix of flavors, as well - a little woodsy, a little spicy. Body seems a little on the heavy side, though.
3.6 Nice dark pour, tan head. Aroma is a nice malt bomb! Molasses, figs, some raisin, and toffee. Flavor is loaded with caramel, molasses, light toasted malt, good stuff!
3.8 So, I poured glass of Asahi. Knocked over the glass. Broke the glass (one of two New Glarus glasses). Spilled the beer. Got to drink one mouthful, it was bad. Poured a glass (more than a glass actually) of Specher Winter Brew. It all works out in the end.
3.0 Got as part of a beer of the month selection or maybe variety pack at World Market. Not bad at all but someone it was disappointing. Serving: Bottle
3.3 Bottle. Clear dark brown-red pour with minimal head. Aroma and taste are mild raisin, caramel, malt, and brown sugar. Decent.
3.2 16oz. Bottle: Slight aroma of malt, slight fig, slight raisin, slight caramel, light nuts maple syrup, and some general sweetness. Poured deep amber/mahogany in color with a small, tan head that lasted throughout as a film on top of the beer and around the edges. Clear. Slightly sparkling. A few tiny particles throughout. Flavor is medium sweet. Tastes of nuts, malt, slight fig, slight wood, light caramel, light raisin, slight maple syrup, and slight toffee. Medium body. Average texture. Average carbonation. Malt, raisin, slight caramel, and slight wood finish is a tad dry and light to medium sweet.
4.2 Winter Brew Lager--Fire Roasted--2009 12 oz. Bottle. 5.75% ABV. 21 IBU’s. (4.25 / 5.0) Winter Bock . Malt of the Earth Beer of the Month Club Selection November, 2009. Rich dense thick tan head. Clear pretty bright rich dark bronze color. Mild hop rich roasted Winter spice burnt dark fruit front. Smooth mellow sweet creamy roasted toffee spice dark carmelized brown sugar rich Winter Lager body. Smooth dry crusty lingering malt mild hop spice hint end. Rich, very nice, roasted Winter Lager. Sampled 4/26/2010.
2.9 4/17/10. 12oz bottle courtesy Cavie. The aroma is sweet caramel malt (reminds of boiling wort) and a touch of ketchup. The flavor is sweet malt, some roasty dust, and again some tomato.
3.2 Bottled. Darker brown with thinner but lasting creamy tan head. Aroma is prunes, chocolate, lighter caramel, and spice. Flavor is bread-like, chocolate, and then lightly dry finish. Bubbly brew for such a dark color
3.0 Aroma - heavy roasted malt, caramel; Appearance - extremely dark brown, opaque, thin head, poor lacing; Taste - sweet malt front, faint fruit, slightly bitter back, dry finish; Palate - very crisp, decent body; Overall - good in most areas though not great, harshly crisp profile masks a large portion of the flavor.
3.6 Deep copper/amber pour with off white head and lace. Sweet malt and a bit of peat. Dried fruit, roasted malt, with a medium bitter. Medium bodied with good carbonation.
